A timid easterner and his wife arrive in Medicine Bow looking for a job as a teacher. Two escaped convicts come through Medicine Bow taking the new teacher, his wife, and students hostage while The Virginian is the temporary sheriff.
The episode title, "The Brazen Bell," is taken from the Oscar Wilde poem that Lilley reads to the convicts.
Arthur Lilly:
This is not a public house?
Judge Henry Garth:
This is not. It is, or was until you came in, a very private one.
Arthur Lilly:
Sarah, I feel we are the victims of a practical joke.
Judge Henry Garth:
Just, just a minute. Who sent you?
Sarah Lilly:
One of the hooligans in town.
Arthur Lilly:
A deputy sheriff, judging from his badge....
