When a magician makes Arte disappear, Jim must travel to another dimension to find him. What his journey back in time reveals is a plot to change the outcome of the Civil War.
While the notion of time as a dimension or property of space (space-time) had not yet emerged, a literary tradition of time travel was already well established, going back almost 2,500 years. The earliest known depiction of a mechanism for voluntary time travel was the 1887 novel 'El Anacronópete' by Enrique Gaspar y Rimbau.
Jim West:
The Colonel is a rather unique travel agent.
Artemus Gordon:
And a most unusual magician, too.
When West, Gordon, and Col. Vautrain go through the portal, the only one who changes significantly (i.e., gets younger) is Col. Vautrain.
