A young woman suffering from Parkinson's befriends a drug rep working for Pfizer in 1990s Pittsburgh.
In preparation for their respective roles, Jake Gyllenhaal spent time with Jamie Reidy, the author of the book the film is based on, while Anne Hathaway spent time with Lucy Roucis, an actress stricken with Parkinson's disease, who has a role in the film.

Jamie and Maggie are in Chicago. In the scene where they walk across the street after the unConvention, the street sign clearly shows "Seventh Avenue." There is no Seventh Avenue in Chicago.
