A lonely boy discovers a mysterious egg that hatches a sea creature of Scottish legend.
Originally, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) was supposed to be released in Christmas 2007, but when The Water Horse was announced to have that release date, Narnia was pushed back six months.

Old Angus: Oh, it's fake alright.
Male Tourist: Of course it's fake. Everyone knows that.

In the workshop, Angus has a toy ship which is clearly seen and is the SS America - this ship was only launched 1940 and would have been relatively unknown in Europe.
No Sea Monsters were harmed during the making of this film.
