Happy Gilmore director Dennis Dugan is returning in front of the camera for the Adam Sandler-led Netflix sequel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Dugan, who is an executive producer on Happy Gilmore 2, will reprise his role of pro golf tour commissioner Doug Thompson that he originated in the 1996 comedy. Kyle Newacheck is helming the new film that is currently in production and has not yet announced a release date.
Sandler is back as lead character Happy Gilmore, introduced in the original as an unsuccessful hockey player who becomes an unlikely golf sensation, due to his mammoth drives. Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen and Ben Stiller are among the returning faces from the first movie, while new additions to the cast include Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley and Scott Mescudi, along with cameos from Travis Kelce and golfer John Daly.

Ben Stiller went uncredited on the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore, where he had a small role as Hal L., a nursing home orderly who torments the elderly people in his care, dropping lines like, “You can trouble me for a warm glass of shut-the-hell-up!” Nearly thirty years later, Stiller is bringing Hal L. back to life, as he has been spotted on the set of the currently-filming Happy Gilmore 2!
Here’s what Stiller’s Hal L. is looking like these days:

Kevin James is not exactly a name that comes to mind when one thinks of the phrase "movie star." People of a certain age probably picture the lovable everyman Doug Heffernan from his long-running sitcom "The King of Queens," but a great many others will probably think of two words: Paul Blart. Be it solely for the memes or because you're one of the many moviegoers who genuinely enjoys the film, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" was a bonafide hit that started a franchise and, though it may not be how we generally think of him, asserted James as a butts-in-seats movie star.

It seemed like he'd be with us forever, but the iconic game show presented and primetime TV mainstay Bob Barker has died at the age of 99. Barker was best known as the long-running host of "The Price is Right" revival, which premiered on CBS in 1972. Barker told contestants to "Come on down!" and ushered them through the fabulous Showcase Showdown innumerable times during his tenure as host through 2007. But even before those three-plus decades of television excellence, Barker had already hosted the popular game show "Truth or Consequences" for 21 years, between 1956 and 1975.
Barker is perhaps the most prolific game show presenter in American broadcast history, but his eminence extended beyond daytime TV. His trademark combination of unflappable reliability, chivalrous old-school charm, and slight underbelly of mischievous caddishness lent itself to a remarkable ability to send up his own persona in cameo roles in films and scripted television series. Jessica Biel rose to stardom in the early 2000s-era of movies, starring in films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Stealth, Blade: Trinity, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, not to mention her time on hit series 7th Heaven. Now, the actress returns to that Y2K nostalgia as an executive producer of Freeform’s Cruel Summer, now in its second season.
“It just brought me back to my youth,” Biel told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s season two Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday night. “It brought me back to being a young woman in Hollywood and a young woman trying to work through this business and the world at this time when technology was changing so much — fashion and music and everything. I think at the time, we didn’t realize how cool it was. But looking back now, I miss it so much.”

A series premiere, a long-awaited season return and a bevy of great movies are new on HBO and HBO Max this month. May 1 marks the series debut of “White House Plumbers,” the new limited series from “Veep” showrunner David Mandel that chronicles the Watergate break-in and fallout. That show airs on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. Then on May 4, the comedy “The Other Two” returns for its third season on HBO Max.
The sixth season of the animated series “Rick and Morty” will be available to stream on HBO Max starting on May 11, and in terms of library titles the “Men in Black” trilogy, the comedies “Step Brothers” and “Some Like It Hot” and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut “Mid90s” all come to HBO and HBO Max this month.

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.
Check out the “White House Plumbers” trailer:
The platform will head to the pitch on May 16 with a three-part soccer docuseries “Angel City.” The series goes behind the scenes with the groundbreaking Los Angeles-based professional women’s soccer team, Angel City Football Club. Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.
The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.
Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.
We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

Paramount Pictures has announced that Tracy Flick Can’t Win — a sequel to Alexander Payne’s cult classic 1999 comedy Election — is being made for Paramount+. Payne is returning as director, with the original film’s lead Reese Witherspoon to produce and reprise her starring role.
Based on Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name, Election watches as the high school teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) finds himself on a collision course with the over-achieving student politician, Tracy Flick (Witherspoon). The satire drawing parallels between the worlds of high school and politics was Payne’s second feature on the heels of 1996’s Citizen Ruth and proved to be his breakthrough project, netting him and his collaborators three Independent Spirit Awards, a WGA Award and an Oscar nomination, with Witherspoon landing her first Golden Globe nomination.
The Election sequel is based on a follow-up novel by Perrotta, which was published by Scribner in June.

The Sandman is certainly keeping himself busy these days, and he doesn't show any signs of slowing down anytime soon. Adam Sandler starred in the basketball drama "Hustle" for Netflix earlier this summer, which came only a few months after announcing he was reuniting with The Safdie Brothers, the team behind his Oscar-snubbed performance in "Uncut Gems." Over the years, Sandler has proven he is more than capable of delivering serious, dramatic performances in films like "Punch Drunk Love," "The Meyerowitz Stories," and "Reign Over Me." But to a lot of folks, Sandler will forever be associated with slapstick comedies from the 1990s and groan-inducing films of the 2010s. Sandler is a bit of an enigma, but he's also someone who specifically works on projects because he wants to, not because he feels like it's expected of him.

Adam Sandler is a comedy genius of this time. He is well known for his hilarious roles in Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, Grown Ups, and Murder Mystery.
Adam and His Movies
Although critics say that Adam Sandler makes a bad movie even worse, we have to disagree. Mr. Sandler knows exactly how to draw attention to the screen and is probably the only thing making these bad movies some money because even though it is terrible, you cannot stop watching them.
Adam Sandler’s Netflix Movies – Ranked Hustle
Adam Sandler spent most of his time recently working on the movie “Hustle” which Netflix released on June 8. The movie is about a down on his luck basketball scout (Sandler) who catches a lucky break when he discovers a new young talent (Bo Cruz). He decides to bring the new talent back without the approval of his team, causing quite a stir between teammates.

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21.
Amazon Prime Video’s epic The Lord of the Rings series won’t arrive until 2022. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for November 2021, Amazon has a pretty major fantasy adaptation to hold us over.
The Wheel of Time is set to premiere on Nov. 19 and will bring Robert Jordan’s massive fantasy universe to life. Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world…or destroy it.

Adam Sandler and Kevin James seem to be joined at the hip, and you rarely see one of them without the other following close behind. Sandler gave James his first role in a live-action movie when the latter was handed the glamorous part of Factory Worker in 2004’s 50 First Dates, back when he was still best known as the star of sitcom The King of Queens, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.
Over the last fifteen years, Sandler and James have co-starred in the three entries in the Hotel Transylvania franchise, two Grown Ups movies, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Zookeeper, Pixels and Sandy Wexler, while James showed up as himself for an uncredited cameo in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.

Hippie Hippie Shake
Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.
Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence...

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

The Martin Luther King Jr. weekend is proving bountiful for at least one shopping-mall misfit.
Sony's PG-rated comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" -- starring Kevin James ("I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry") as a hapless security guard-turned-hero -- rung up an impressive $33.8 million in estimated opening grosses through Sunday. That put the Happy Madison production firmly atop the domestic boxoffice headed into the Monday holiday.
"It's a huge number, there's no doubt about it," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said.
Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" from Warner Bros. was pacing second over its second weekend of wide release, following several sessions in limited distribution. Pumping another $22.2 million it its tank this weekend, "Torino" now hauls a $73.2 million cume.
The frame's three other wide openers also loaded up on three-day coin.
Lionsgate's 3-D horror film "My Bloody Valentine" registered $21.9 million in third from a mix of extra-dimensional and conventional playdates.

Lohan & Murphy Lead Razzie Nominations
Lindsay Lohan and Eddie Murphy both scored multiple nominations for the 2008 Golden Raspberry Awards - honoring the worst movies and performances of the past year. The annual ceremony - known as the Razzies - is a spoof of the Oscars, with the honors handed out a day before the famed Academy Awards. Lohan's 2007 movie I Know Who Killed Me received a staggering nine nods in the nominations, which were announced on Monday - a day before the Oscar nominees are revealed. The film is tipped in several categories including Worst Picture, Worst Director for Chris Sivertson and Worst Actress for Lohan. The Mean Girls star is nominated in this category twice as she played two different parts in the film. Golden Raspberry founder John Wilson insists Lohan's thriller deserves to lead the way at the 2008 ceremony. He says, "Lohan's movie played like a cross between the torture tale Hostel and The Patty Duke Show. For worst actress, Lohan polled more heavily than any actor since Sofia Coppola in The Godfather Part III. I Know Who Killed Me is the most fabulously brainless movie since Showgirls, which Razzie voters picked as the worst movie of the 1990s. By the end of it, you still don't know what happened. Can I please have my hour and 50 minutes back?" Eddie Murphy's 2007 comedy Norbit received eight nominations, including two for Murphy himself for Worst Actor and Worst Actress - as he also played the wife of the main character in the film. Wilson adds about Murphy's performance, "We decided that each of his characters was so offensive that he deserved individual nominations." The other Worst Picture nominees were Bratz, Daddy Day Camp with Cuba Gooding Jr. and I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry, which starred Adam Sandler.

USA buys rights to 11 Uni films
USA Network has snapped up cable rights to Universal Pictures' The Bourne Ultimatum and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry as part of an 11-picture deal with NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution.
The deal also includes the theatrical titles The Hitcher, Alpha Dog, Smokin' Aces, Children of Men, The Good Shepherd, Breach, Ali G Indahouse, The Interpreter and Man of the Year.
Bourne, starring Matt Damon, was released Friday and made $69.3 million during the weekend. Chuck, which stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James, has made $91.8 million at the domestic boxoffice since its July 20 bow.
Sources said USA -- which, like the distributor and film studio, is owned by NBC Universal -- paid about $60 million for the package, with Bourne and Chuck accounting for $35 million-$40 million of that total. The network and distributor declined comment on the financial and other terms of the deal.
It's believed that the deals for Bourne and Chuck are 4 and 1/2-year agreements, with NBC Universal allowed to carve out broadcast windows for both titles. In addition, the distributor will be allowed to carve out second cable windows, though USA has exclusive rights to both titles for the first two years of the deals, according to sources.

Warner's new release, the romantic comedy No Reservations, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart, managed to squeeze into the fifth slot with an estimated $4 million.
Roaring out of the gate Friday, 20th Century Fox's The Simpsons Movie bounded ahead of even the most optimistic expectations to take in an estimated $29.1 million in 3,922 theaters. The animated film appears headed for an opening weekend that should definitely top $70 million and could head into $80 million territory.

$34.8 million boxoffice smooch for Sandler
Wedding bells rang out for I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry during the weekend at the North American boxoffice. In a frame that saw the top three films fairly evenly matched, moviegoers also danced to the tune of the new musical Hairspray, while Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix fended off competition from the final Harry Potter novel.
Strong showings at the top of the pack were reflected in an upbeat comparison with the same weekend a year ago, when Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest dominated the boxoffice for the third weekend in a row. This weekend's top 10 amassed $144.7 million, up 5% from last year, according to Nielsen EDI.
Universal Pictures' PG-13 "Chuck & Larry," starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James as two straight firefighters who pose as gay in order to collect domestic-partnership benefits, led the weekend list by pulling in $34.8 million in 3,495 theaters for a per-theater average of $9,949. Directed by Dennis Dugan (Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy), it was far from Sandler's biggest opening -- that honor belongs to The Longest Yard, which bowed to a three-day gross of $47.6 million and a four-day number of $58.6 million during Memorial Day weekend in 2005 -- but it still marked Sandler's eighth comedy to open at more than $30 million.
Although Sandler is generally considered a guy's guy comedian, the relationship comedy of "Chuck & Larry" actually managed to attract slightly more females (52%) than males. It also spoke to a younger crowd -- 54% were under 25. The movie earned a B-plus in CinemaScore polling.
"It played really broadly", Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said. "It's just another indication of how popular Adam Sandler is, and women know that, too. It's going to become another $100 million movie for Adam."
In third place overall, New Line Cinema's Hairspray, built around a teen dance show in Baltimore in the early 1960s, tilted heavily female in its opening weekend; 68% of its audience was female, and 63% of attendees were over 25. Director \Adam Shankman's adaptation of the 2002 Broadway musical, which in turn was an adaptation of the 1998 John Waters film, hummed along with $27.8 million in 3,121 theaters for a per-theater average of $8,907.
Movie musicals have had a hit-or-miss track record in recent years, but with a cast that ranged from newcomer Nikki Blonksy as the plus-size heroine to such song-and-dance pros as John Travolta and Queen Latifah, Hairspray appeared well on its way to re-energizing the genre.

No. 1 gift-wrapped for Universal's 'Chuck'
Moviegoers flocked to the guy nuptials of Universal Pictures' I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry as it opened nationwide in 3,495 theaters Friday.
The PG-13 comedy, starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James as straight firefighters who pose as gay to take advantage of domestic partnership benefits, led the day's domestic boxoffice listings with an estimated $12.4 million.
Debuting as a strong No. 2, New Line Cinema's musical Hairspray, in which John Travolta does a turn in drag, also found favor with moviegoers as it bowed to $10.8 million in 3,121 theaters.
Warner Bros. Pictures' Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, last weekend's chart topper, checked in at No. 3 with an estimated $10.2 million, bringing its domestic cume to more than $185 million.
Phoenix could still rise to the second spot in the weekend rankings if it's buoyed by strong matinee showings, though its fate this weekend also could be affected by the publication of the final volume.

Sandler & James Take New Movie to Gay Groups
Funnymen Adam Sandler and Kevin James took their new movie to the leaders of U.S. gay rights groups - to make sure the release wouldn't be rocked by protests. The two stars play fire fighters who pretend to be a gay couple so they can receive domestic partner benefits in I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry. And James reveals the pair was so concerned the comedy would upset gay groups, they screened it for them well ahead of the film's release date in an effort to make sure they wouldn't be offending anyone. The actor says, "We screened it for (gay rights group) GLAAD because we certainly didn't want to offend anybody in any way. The main reason of this movie is really just to make people laugh and that's all we wanted to do. When you pick a subject like this, you're honestly gonna have to walk that line and you want to show what it's like out there. These guys are idiots in a way. They learn tolerance, what it's about, and what happens when they have to pretend to be this way. That's basically it, but we're certainly not trying to tell people how to live their lives in any way, shape, or form. We are just basically hoping people will go and laugh and have a good time with it without making light of the subject itself."...

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry
I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry is a "gay" comedy created by straights who want to have it both ways: Hit the audience with a barrage of homophobia and gay jokes yet wind up with an ecumenical, politically correct embrace of all points of sexual orientation. It's the equivalent of that old Jerry Seinfeld bit where he mentions someone is gay but quickly adds, "Not that there's anything wrong with that." We even get the film's star, Adam Sandler, summing up what he has learned from his experiences pretending to be gay: Don't use the word "faggot," he lectures. It's hurtful.
"Chuck & Larry" won't be hurtful at the boxoffice, where Sandler is a highly commercial comedy brand. Straights pretending to be gay can always provoke easy laughs, especially when the movie takes place in a tame, AIDS-free universe where homosexuality simply means an aggressive fashion style. Universal Pictures can anticipate a strong domestic boxoffice; overseas, however, its extremely broad approach to situation comedy might meet resistance.
Sandler and Kevin James (CBS' The King of Queens) play thoroughly hetero Brooklyn firemen who through a convoluted and unconvincing quirk in civic red tape must pretend to be domestic partners in order for James, a widower, to list his two kids as his life insurance beneficiaries.
Never mind that everyone in their lives knows their sexual orientation, which includes Sandler's infamous bachelor pad that runs hot and hotter babes on a daily basis. No, everyone instantly believes the charade. OK, not everyone: Their chief, played with cut-the-crap bluster by Dan Aykroyd, never buys the act for a minute.
So the pretense commences. The city sends a prissy fraud inspector in Steve Buscemi to inspect their honeymoon pad and rifle through garbage to determine whether it's gay enough. Fellow firefighters quake at the prospect of showering with the two "partners"; and the mailman now feels free to come on to James With a slew of postal service double entendres involving special deliveries and handling big packages.
Predictably, Sandler falls in love with the partners' glamorous attorney, Jessica Biel. Yet he can only enjoy a "girls' day" with her -- you know, shopping, trying on clothes and Sandler groping her breasts to determine that they are real.
The curious thing here is that Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor rewrote this long-in-development screenplay. Yet the authors of such smart comedies as Sideways, About Schmidt and Citizen Ruth can't move the film away from the world of easy laughs and sitcom jokes into a realm where sexual prejudices and presumptions get examined in a whimsical yet insightful manner.
One longs for something like Paul Rudnick's script for "In & Out," which was very funny yet delved into the trauma of coming out and the perplexing issue of homophobia in society.
Under the direction of Dennis Dugan, the film seemingly will try anything for a laugh. This includes having James' loutish maid Mary Pat Gleason) wake up in bed with the two men one morning. How logically did she get there?
Some actors -- notably James, Ving Rhames and young Cole Morgan as James' small son who prefers musical comedy to baseball -- appear game for a more challenging comedy. But Sandler, whose own company was one of the producers, prefers to swim in safe, shallow waters rather than plunge into the deeper issues the film so cheerfully ignores.
Production values are strong, though the film lacks visual panache.
