  • This isn't a favorite episode of mine, but I had fun with it all the same. This is one bizarre film not just for it being a sleaze fest but for how low to no budget it truly is.

From certain edits, acting that's not going to win any academy awards though plenty of razzies if that's your thing, but also the fact despite called Spider Island there are few to no spiders. Well ok, there is one big spider which bites one guy, and he transforms into a Were Spider I think though acts like a werewolf as he doesn't do anything that has to do with spiders. The make up job I'll admit is decent as the face of him is kind of creepy and sort of makes him look perverted which ironically fits the film along with the hands, though are the only things about him transformed as the rest of his body isn't covered probably didn't have enough bucks to complete the make-up job.

Anyway, the MST gang are as usual funny, there are plenty of memorable riffs and scenes.

From the beginning where the film, starts with one of the weirdest theme songs ever as it's the kind of old sleaze theme you'd hear from an old porn film probably, which ironically fits this film as it's a sleaze fest.

Like once scene where one character is walking out near a cliff and looking out at a sunset, Crow says some sad funny line "I'm not just wondering if there's a point to the movie now, I'm wondering if there's a point to anything?! "Yeah, Crow that's how I feel whenever I watch a bad TV season what's the damn point.

Another is the plane crash scene which is one of the most unconvincing scenes ever as it's just an edit of some old plane footage as we see their plane has caught on fire for no reason whatsoever and then it makes this weird cut to one or two of the nameless females screaming in a dark room which we're suppose to assume is the interior of the plane. Really like the riffs everyone make one thing Tom says after the plane crashes, "Oww." I know one word, but it was just how he used it that made it funny.

Or even in the final half with two male characters have a fist fight as one character is a total drunk blowhole (obviously another painted target for the slasher) whom is another Don Juan wanabe (join the club) and we see one of the worst fight scenes ever as the choreography is off and then both characters suddenly just laugh and become friends again for no reason. Really like the riffs on each of the punches as well as the beginning and end of the fight.

Another is with the females and only male still living doing a torch chase scene against the Were Spider. It's funny when Crow states this is one of his dreams he has, yeah if it was Cobra uniformed henchwoman that would be a dream for me too. But anyway, enough of the weird dreams, there are just a lot of other memorable riffs in it like Servo making a reference joke to "Field of Dreams".

Even like some of the host segments, one I like is when their parodying on that plane crash scene, we see the cuts from them in their prop plane controls to all three in a black room screaming and then the plane crashes and suddenly all three turn into females for no apparent reason.

With the MST crew this is one island worth visiting.

    Rating: 3 stars.
  • "Horrors of Spider Island" is one of the most unintentionally hilarious movies I've ever seen. MST3k parodied plenty of really, really rotten flicks, movies you couldn't watch without their riffs, but on occasion they would choose a movie like "Horrors of Spider Island" which are amazingly easy targets. I don't know if I like these episodes less for how easy the jokes come, but I do know that watching "Horrors of Spider Island" without Mike and the Bots is just as funny if not funnier than it is with their commentary.

A movie called "Horrors of Spider Island" should be expected to provide plenty of cheesy spider action, but really the title is severely misguiding. This movie is more focused on providing non-nude 50's era soft porn than anything involving spiders. I've heard people compare this to Russ Meyer films, but really it's more deserving of comparison to awful sexploitation than Meyer's generally well-made and tongue-in-cheek offering.

This movie is fun. Yes, it's completely inept, ridiculous, and retarded but it also so creatively and so frequently finds bizarre reasons for these German 'babes' to strip, scream, run, dance, and lose bits and pieces of their clothing. It's sort of brilliant really.

Some would argue that no film that entertains you can be truly bad. I offer "Horrors of Spider Island" as an argument to the contrary; this is an abysmal movie on every level imaginable with the sound effects taking the prize for most hysterically ludicrous.

Watch it on MST3k, the riffs are fun. Watch it without and you'll have a new favorite.

    2/10 (8/10 MST3k, 10/10 entertainment value without MST3k)
  • Let me just start off by saying that this is one of the funniest episodes of MST3K ever (second to Hobgoblins) and the host segments are the most hilarious. Again, if you can ignore the fact that the film is terrible, you will love any episode of the show. Horrors of Spider Island is in my opinion one of the worst films Mike and the Bots have riffed, and I don't think I could have survived without the madcap jokes. Some of my favorite lines: "(moaning) We've got spirit, yes we do. We've got spirit, how 'bout... ugh." "Where do you want the silverware? Well in the kitchen where it always goes!" ""Wow, television shows DID air last night!" How can you go wrong with those kinds of lines? You can't? I thought so.
