An outcast New York City cop is charged with bringing down Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas, whose real life inspired this partly biographical film.
Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts were on-set consultants to director Ridley Scott and the crew throughout filming. Roberts was said to have stated, "Lucas is having too much fun, and I want to arrest him again!"
When Richie Roberts parks his car just before the scene where Frank visits Nicky in the club, a Ford Crown Victoria and a Lincoln Town Car can be seen at the end on the streets on an avenue. Those specific models didn't existed until 1998. It repeats when Frank gets caught just right out of the church at the end of the film.
At the end of the closing credits, Frank Lucas approaches the camera and fires one shot from a pistol directly at the audience.
The 175 min.-unrated extended version includes approx. 19 minutes of additional footage not seen in the theatrical release. Among the highlights are:
