  • 'KID CANNABIS': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

Crime drama/comedy flick about a high school dropout who becomes a multimillion-dollar drug lord when he and his friend start trafficking marijuana, from Canada into Idaho. It's based on the true story of Nate Norman, played in the film by Jonathan Daniel Brown (of 'PROJECT X' fame). It costars Kenny Wormald, Aaron Yoo, Amanda Tapping, Ron Perlman and John C. McGinley. The movie was written and directed by John Stockwell and it's based on articles by Mark Binelli and Kevin Taylor. I was surprised to find out the film is not a joke; it actually takes the subject matter seriously and depicts it in a, somewhat, realistic way. It's also funny at times.

Nate Norman (Brown) was an overweight 18-year-old high school dropout, who lived in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho with his mother (Tapping) and kid brother (Mark Hills). He delivered pizzas, not only to support him but his family as well, and loved getting high with his 27-year-old friend Topher (Wormald). One day, while delivering pizzas, he comes up with the idea of smuggling drugs from Canada; by running them through the woods across the border. He asks Topher to partner with him, on his plan, and when the two start making a lot of money, he enlists the help of their other friends as well. Things go really well for the guys until greed and rival drug dealers become a huge problem.

The movie is marketed as a teen sex comedy flick (with a lot of drug use as well). It definitely has a lot of sex, nudity and drug use but it's not a slapstick comedy in any way. There's humor frequently but for the most part it's a pretty serious attempt to depict what life was like for these two, very young, drug dealers. It's raunchy but also brutally violent and suspenseful at times. I found it involving and informative and I like how they didn't make Nate or Topher out to be heroes. Sure they're likable guys, who meant well and didn't really do anything wrong, but they were also greedy and selfish too. The performances are all good and Stockwell does a decent job writing and directing (he's directed other cool B movies like 'BLUE CRUSH' and 'IN THE BLOOD'). I enjoyed this movie and think it's definitely worth a watch.

  • First of all this movie has a bad title which makes you think it is a stupid mindless comedy which it is not, it is actually based on true events. The reason I rated it 7 is because it has some truly realistic elements about it starting off with Jonathan Daniel Brown portraying the leading role, not your common type cast for a main character especially in American movies, also other cast members and events were realistic in a way that reminded me of Jessie Pinkman's friends and their Shenanigans in "Breaking Bad". However after the first hour of the movie I just kind of lost interest in the very boring and predicted turn of events and continued watching till the end while playing with my phone….

Final note: Kenny Wormald (talking about bad names…) portraying Topher has a real star quality about him, I wouldn't be surprised seeing him star in something big in the future, maybe there's a good reason why guy's like that get to play the main characters and guy's like Jonathan Daniel Brown usually settle for the side-kick's part.

I had never heard of this movie until I stumbled across it on Sky Movies, I had a quick look at the trailer, thought it looked interesting enough so I gave it a watch. As the opening credits roll we are told that it is based on a true story, I am not sure how loosely this is but there were definitely some parts of Kid Cannabis which I found very unrealistic and bizarre.

The story follows two teenage, high school dropout stoners with no hope of ever making a decent living with a standard job. They spend most of their time getting high, trying to fit in at parties and score drugs. Before long they realise that they have an opportunity to get rich quick by becoming drug smugglers, smuggling marijuana over the boarder of Canada to America. One will run, across country through the woods with a backpack full of Marijuana while the other drives across the borders security in an empty car and meets him on the other side. This is where the story starts to get a little too unbelievable for my liking.

On their first trip to Canada they dig a boat out of a lake and sell it for $1800, they then get ripped off for their money by a dealer who sells them cheap drugs. Then on their second trip to Canada they bump into a girl at a petrol station who is smoking, she just so happens to be the daughter of a massive drug supplier who runs a marijuana farm. They are introduced and within 5 minutes they have their Canadian supplier, and it's that easy. Secondly, They then go back to America to try and find a contact to which they can sell the weed to in bulk. Again, within 5 minutes, they have a deal in place with a well-known drug kingpin, apparently it's that easy. The lads then unknowingly move next door to their local drug dealing rival and one of the lad's mothers has no problem that her son is snuggling millions of dollars of drugs over the border.

Kid Cannabis did entertain me but the fact it stated to be a true story and had so many unbelievable aspects made it hard for me to really get immersed into the movie.

Worth a watch if you have nothing else to do, it is an easy watching film but has many flaws in my opinion

    6/10

This is a great stoner movie to vibe with. It's not exactly a comedy though, toward the end the story transforms into multiple dark sub plots all at once and can feel like a bit much. The beginning and middle are an amazing ride!

For a topic such as illegal drug smuggling, the producers dealt with it in a very intricate and almost educational way. It was very well put together. It of course contains the elements you would expect from such a movie. These being partying, drugs (and lots of it) and sex, but when it gets to the more serious topics at hand such as how this kind of behavior and greed can take hold and get the better of people and just how serious the consequences can be, you begin so realize that it's not just a stupid comedy and that is actually has some depth to it. Movies that are based on true events always get my attention and instantly seem to make it worth watching even more. It was nice to see Kenny Wormald play a completely different character. The last time I saw him, he was in the new Footloose. Completely different style but he pulled both off really well. All in all, Kid Cannabis kept me interested and entertained for the most part, the acting was very believable and I recommend you give a watch. It's not for everyone but I'm sure you'll find some aspect of it you like.
  • I originally played this movie late at night so that I could fall asleep to it. However, once the beginning credits started to play, I could not keep my eyes off the screen as my attention was caught early and stayed strong all the way through. It shows the meteoric rise of a 18 year old high school drop out to a massive drug hauling king pin.

I realize that some people will be quick to pass up this movie as some 'stoner flick' not worth watching but there is so much more to this movie than meets the eye. The film has a little bit of everything including strong dialogue, relatable characters, and quite a few laughs in between. The characters are believable and likable and all parts are played satisfactorily. The ending wrapped everything up nicely and answered all questions that have been in viewers' minds while watching.

Overall, solid movie indeed. It may not have the most depth in terms of story, but nonetheless it was a very entertaining movie. 7/10

I didn't expect much from this film, but I was surprised. It was funny and the story was good for a drug run film based on a true story. I liked the lead actors lethargic style, it suited the character. It's not up with the best "drug runner" films but it's more comedic and that it's based on a true story is even more hilarious. There are a lot worse movies out there. This is a good yarn and funny. You will not be bored and it's well directed.

    Spoiler Alert:

I like that he's a stand up guy.

Quote I love best from the movie: "It's only Pot".
  • Here is your average stoner movie Mixed in with a little bit of what not to do if you sell drugs,

the movie has some if not all scenes where drug use is exhibited. The start as usual is slow, however once the user gets into the movie it's like a really good book that you can't keep away from. Based on away true story the movie has its high and low moments along with a lot of comedy and nudity involved. Worth the hour and forty minutes of anyone's time. Mixing a bit of the wolf of wall Street and project X this movie makes the perfect stoner party ready for all. New actors play suitable roles, hopefully going onto better brighter things, Just like pain in gain this movie takes a serious real life situation and brings comedy and makes a good Hollywood blockbuster out of it

not as bad as i though very entertaining in some aspects, tits, and adventure its seems a very unreal for a based on a true story because those kids were stupid!

i like the idea of the guy hiding some cash for the future that was a great idea but why everyone that is making money has to spend it like idiots..?

the movie if its based on a true events its kind of unreal, and seemed to easy for those guy to smuggle, just like oh! let me just go to Canada and get some pot, well go on the woods and cross it home and that's all, super easy right, then from no reason change of cars, house, money and no one notices!??

even the weird mom doesn't say much like oh were did u get it? i don't care!??

    WTF!???
  • Warning: Spoilers
Based on a true story? The whole story lacks of realism.

The story starts with getting a low amount of startup money from a wrecked boat which is pulled out of the sea and is sold to a guy. Some kingpin moneymaker gives a huge amount of money in advance and threatens the family of the guy who is a nerd type in case he rips him off.

Nobody would give 600k money and all the leverage is a fat guy, his younger brother and his mother.

He succeeds to make millions and has no protection. Another dude hires 2 killers but he himself has no protection at all...

After everything gets even more worse all the companions testify against the leader and are charged a maximum of 20 months. That is the most unrealistic part of the story.

I expected a funny but cruel story comparable to Project X... I cannot recommend this movie.
  • 8.25 of 10. This is a reality based version of How to Make Money Selling Drugs (2012). It also takes a different approach in the lessons embedded in the story by providing many examples of exactly what not to do. Neither are documentaries, but at the same time contain a great deal of surprising truths.

Besides learning by counter-example and having lots of amusing, stranger than fiction scenes, the film throws in the one thing that is exactly what you'd expect with young people with lots of money stuck in Idaho: lots of partying, pursuit of the beautiful, and sex. The filming and perspectives also capture, at least with the women, parts and views that rarely get done well in film or TV. There's an actual appreciation and understanding of women's bodies by the director and camera crew.

Despite the fun, sex, and young cast, the film as a whole is a well-acted tragedy with a deep impact.
  • Theme about the youngsters are always soaring with high commercial elements with lots of comedy that hardly brings any smile on us. This was one of the teen movie based on the true story of the two friends which is mostly uninspiring, but a well told story.

The young actor from one of my favorite teen movie 'Project X' was incredibly good. He's really showing some characters that he may become a valuable property in the Hollywood in the near future. He also reminds me a crossover outcome of Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill.

Well the story was about two school dropouts who decide to do business on marijuana import-export. Since it is not illegal in the nearby place to their's across the border, they draw a master plan to execute and succeeds and what comes later is you've to see. Actually, one of a better movie told from the negative side of the social welfare. So good to enjoy the film, but not to follow it.
  • It'd be nice if someone could make some stoner films that aren't filled with clichés/rip offs/stereotypes.

Someone wrote in a review that it was like the wolf of wall street but for bud... they're right. But it's not a good thing, you can see what they have imitated very clearly. The weird cop who stops them is a rip off from Super Troopers (he says meow before he walks back to his car for no reason - the game in super troopers). They also casually enforce really bad stoner stereotypes which are the source of the stigma behind smoking cannabis. I could go on.

The characters don't feel real. None of them have charisma and I feel like I'm hearing a story from the one kid at school who lies and exaggerates to sound cool and I can't wait for it to be over. I know it's based on true events but it's clearly heavily dramatized and badly written.

The only redeeming feature of this film is a couple of famous names I didn't expect to see in such a shocker and some technical knowledge. Emphasis on some.

    Top ten worst stoner movies.

Nate Norman (Jonathan Daniel Brown) is a drop out pizza delivery boy in northern Idaho. He helps out his single mom who struggles as a waitress. As an avid reader of High Times, he knows he can score great pot in Canada and utilize the easy walk across the border to transport it into Idaho. He manages to get a financial backer (Ron Perlman) and assembles a team of his high school buds...pun intended.

Unfortunately Nate is an amateur at the game. He steps on the toes of his competitor, flaunts his wealth, and has an inner circle with no loyalty.

The film is based on a true story, one without a financial backer. Norman claims he simply expanded the business with the profits from the previous crossing. The movie has the look and feel of a teen sex romp with all the women in northern Idaho being tens.

Other than being based on a true story, there is really nothing to separate it from the pack.

    Okay s a rental.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, nudity including male frontal.

A well told story that is produced incredibly well for a small budget movie (though you can tell where some of the financing must have come from) delivered by a solid cast who are really not messing around. I am glad to see a movie this good telling a story that most people have a connection to some where. I walked into this movie completely blinded to anything beyond the title, and am thankful of it, but if you want to hear some reason that would make you pick this movie over something else then I would tell you that I really found myself lost in this movie as it was being told, and I know those are mixed metaphors. This mostly young or youthful cast give an almost Goodfellas level performance with the excellent narration work by Jonathan Daniel Brown pulling the story along really fluidly and very naturally. There is no old establishment type stereotypical bunch of munchie seeking dude nonsense. What you are given is a very adult story from a great bunch of professionals of all ages, and from a completely open to new things standpoint. I Enjoyed the fullness of the entire movie, and the delivery from the actors, and so I recommend this to people that are open to the new things that are happening, and some history some people who found their own loop holes.

    Warning: Spoilers
First, Nate (fat nerdy kid) decides to get into drug trafficking. Does so with remarkable ease by finding the best grade of weed from a secret supplier in Canada by just driving into a gas station and smoking some grass with a hot girl he and his friend Christopher just met.

Then, a big time hustler, who apparently would do business with my cousin's 6 year old son, hands same fat nerdy kid over half a million dollars whose only security deposit is a kid brother and a mother who really couldn't care less that her son was an overnight millionaire.

The story may have been a great one, but Jonathan Daniel Brown has to be the worst example of a leading actor (especially in this kind of role) coupled with the sometimes ludicrously poor character executions possible.

Had hope, but it wasn't worth it.
  • Now when I say "teenage 'Blow (2001)'" I don't mean as it's juvenile and adults won't find anything of value here, quite the opposite actually.

The movie feels very adult, plenty of swearwords and nudity and such and a typical Scorcese like voice-over (without ever feeling cheesy or unnatural) and a good story and competent acting.

Jonathan Daniel Brown is very good in the lead but my favorite performance comes from Aaron Yoo as a menacing rival of his.

The only 'bad thing' I can say is that, it could have dug deeper into the characters; the female characters are all pretty empty and most are only there for eye-candy and the movie is low budget and it shows and feels like it was shot in a couple weeks at the most.

Comparing it to 'Blow (2001)' might get your hopes a little too high I know realise, it doesn't have the feeling of a epic trials and tribulations of a drug kingpin which that had but I mean it's definitely above average when it comes to these sorts of movies.

And it most definitely entertains from start to finish with plenty of humor to go with the based on a true story.

    7.5/10, a stellar recommendation.
  • Written and directed by John Stockwell (who played the friendly jock in Christine), the film stars that chubby dweeb from Project X and tells the supposed true story about an 18-year-old pizza delivery boy who becomes a marijuana trafficker in Canada with his better looking friend (played by the guy who starred in that Footloose remake) for profit.

If I had one word to describe the movie, it would be 'insufferable'. What I hated the most about the film is the portrayal of women. Now I don't mean to come off as a soyboy, but almost every female in this is literally portrayed as an object; they're either there for a male character to sleep with or there simply for the male viewers to drool over. What I'm trying to say is that not one written female has a character arc; it's almost as if the script was written by an incel.

Lastly, a lot of filmmakers still think that having an actor drop an F-bomb in a comedy every five seconds automatically makes said comedy funny; news flash, it doesn't.

Furthermore, the direction of the film is hit or miss, the acting is hardly on point, and the jokes are, there I say, dead on arrival. I am absolutely baffled by the high rating and praise this movie's gotten. Unless you are a sexually frustrated adult (or a teenager who is still in high school), do not waist your time on this tripe.

Didn't have too high of expectations going in to this one, but seeing Ron Pearlman from SOA got me in my seat. A true story about a kid from Idaho who turns his nothing life into something we all wanted at one time or another growing up, Money & Power. Nate Norman narrates us through his rise and fall as the leader of Idaho's most unassuming team of drug mules.

If I didn't know going in that it was a true story, I would have in no way believed it. From the moment Nate and his best friend Topher hatch their plan, I was hooked. You get a first hand look at how money, power and drugs turn best friends into adversaries who eventually end up only looking out for #1, selling anyone and everyone out to be able to stay out of prison blues.

It's a pretty interesting window to be able to look through, watching their "crack team" of mules go from small time to big time overnight. Eventually doing the exact opposite of what John C. McGinley and his sage Canadian weed grower wisdom advised them against before their first trip across the border. The bragging to friends, throwing raging parties and buying all the toys money can buy, it was that excess and greed that eventually end it all. While it was never my life, I can't lie, the first three-quarters of the movie looked like a pretty fun ride. Basically it's the Wolf of Wall Street for stoners, trading Wall Street for Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and stocks for weed.
  • The acting was horrible, if you look at production dates and the gross revenue it is evident no publisher liked this movie, and no one payed to watch it, people have only watched it through Netflix.

The movie is inaccurate in the fact that 300lbs Is only worth about 480000 street. I don't know how much they legitimately bought and sold in real life but the pricing was definitely inaccurate in the movie. Also a trafficker would not be paid such a huge percentage. There was also maybe 10lbs of weed in the suppliers grow room.

This movie was not comedic, I had no emotion when they were being robbed, this whole production seems as if a few kids came together made a movie with their friends and asked two of the lowest budget pro actors to give them three minutes of footage. The whole experience was a major waste of time, and I'm disgusted by the fact that I wasted these few hours of my life.

The soundtrack was also horrible white kids rapping.
  • I have to give this movie a B- just because the ending really made me uncomfortable and angry. The film has a nice pace and if you have ever done anything that you knew was dodgy and were nervous about getting caught, the beginning of the film really brought back that same feeling of dread and excitement that I had. The acting is excellent and if anything this movie is too realistic which is why the inevitable ending is pretty excruciating to watch. However the movie is fun and makes you wistful at the end of it because they really could have had it all if they were not so (cussing) greedy. It really is sickening that you can get life in prison for selling pot to me. All of the violence and tax evasion that are associated with weed are totally unnecessary. How many houses and boats and personal property has the government stolen from its citizens? I am sure Budweiser and Dupont and all of the pharm companies are lobbying like crazy as we speak buying our elected officials golf trips to Scotland and letting them borrow their ferraris and vacation homes.

    Blow
Kid Cannabis is loosely based on the true tale of Nate Norman (Jonathan Daniel Brown) as a chubby high school dropout and pizza delivery boy who with his best stoner buddy Topher (Kenny Wormald) and gang of potheads started a marijuana smuggling operation from Canada, cock a snook to an arrogant rival and soon build a multi million dollar business which leads to debauchery and partying too hard.

Like an even more nerdy version of Blow with ineptness such as the boys getting searched each time they try to get into Canada or getting lost as they try to trek through the woods to get back over the border with their illicit goods.

Things get darker as the excesses take their toll, the police home in on them and the loyalties of the gang are tested.

This is a low budget film which works better as a dark comedy with notable supporting performances by Ron Perlman and John C McGinley. It is just too convenient that they find an extraordinary weed grower in Canada and a special buyer in the USA.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Friday evening and chilling at home with Netflix on.I just wanted to watch some Seth Rogen or Jonah Hill movies and typed their names in and this movie was one on the list and upon reading the synopsis I decided to give it a go. I was hit with none big name actors and I kind of had a glimpse of where this film might end up but oh man was it totally what I was not expecting.

First 30min of the movie I just thought that I would be introduced to the typical dorm kids buying dope and selling them in campus but this was much grander than that. Two kids sick of their $4.50/hr jobs decides to go on a quest to Canada to buy stacks of pot and sell them in the US. As the movie progresses they end up with bigger cash flows, higher risk of security and the actions they have to take to secure their wealth and business.

This movie shows the amazing life of high end drug dealer and the dark side of their life they have to face in order to protect it. It shows that the business gets built upon trust with friendship and how quickly these can turn around when big dollar figures are involved. The depiction shown by all the actors are spot on. I'm quite surprised these actors don't get more roles in bigger movies. Hope to see them advance in their future acting career because the acting was spot on imo.

    Great movie!

    Awful
Quite possibly one of the worst films I've seen in a while. The script is terrible, acting is boring and not to mention the bad cinematography and editing. To top it all off we have the objectification of all the women in this film who's only value are their naked bodies.

    Don't watch this garbage
  • I gave the Movie an extra high rating because it is based on a true story and has scenes that take place IRL in a store in Nelson, BC, Called Holy Smoke Culture Shop that I was part owner of back in the day. The movie stays pretty true to the actual facts as I understand them. The origiinal story appeared in Rolling Stone Magazine. Even tho the shop in the movie is shot at a real pot shop in Victoria run by real-life activist Ted Smith it captures the feel of Holy Smoke just the same. I enjoyed the movie overall.
