One Major Mistborn & Game Of Thrones Difference Reveals A Unique Strategy For Adapting Brandon Sanderson's Books
Image
There's one major difference between Mistborn and Game of Thrones, pointed out by Brandon Sanderson, that could indicate something about how his books should be adapted. George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire novels are some of the most prolific fantasy books ever written, and given the popularity of the HBO adaptation, they're a common comparison point for any series hoping to be made into a film or television show. Brandon Sanderson has long discussed the possibility of a Mistborn movie adaptation, and there's much to theorize about regarding how that would look.

In a Reddit thread from 2016, Sanderson was prompted by a fan, questioning if he would consider finishing A Song of Ice & Fire if Martin doesn't. The question was asked in praise of Sanderson as an author and also due to the fact that he famously finished Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time...

At its core, Foundation is a story about faith versus science. Yes, the same age-old question that has been twisting humankind into knots since its inception is very much at the center of Asimov's story.

Apple Inks Multi-Film Deal With Acclaimed Indie Studio A24
Apple has taken its first concrete step into the original film space. The tech giant has announced a deal with A24, the independent studio behind acclaimed features like Moonlight, Lady Bird, and Ex Machina.

The pair’s partnership will see A24 produce multiple films for Apple. There aren’t many more details available, and there’s no word on how they will be distributed. Though The Hollywood Reporter points out that A24 already operates a deal with DirecTV that gives the service provider the rights to offer its films on demand.

Films resulting from the Apple/A24 partnership will be Apple’s first movies -- but, make no mistake, it’s been splashing out quite a bit of cash on original content development before now. After its first series, Planet of the Apps, was widely panned, it pivoted — and reportedly spent more than $1 billion -- on a slate of shows,...

Apple Adds Former BBC Films Exec To Content Team, As It Readies International Slate
Apple has tapped a BBC veteran to help spearhead its video efforts internationally.

Joe Oppenheimer, who formerly served as chief of BBC Films, has joined Apple as a creative executive on its international development team, Deadline reports. Oppenheimer marks the tech giant’s second hire in the U.K. following Jay Hunt -- to whom he will report. Hunt, who formerly served as the chief creative officer of British broadcaster Channel 4, was named Apple’s creative director, Europe, in January. Hunt, who reports to Apple content chiefs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, has spent the last six months meeting top producers in the U.K., per Deadline, and “is on the verge of announcing her first commissions.”

In addition to its growing stateside slate, Apple made its first international purchase last month, tendering a straight-to-series order of Calls -- an English adaptation of the French short-form series, which...

Foundation TV Series Adds to Cast
Mike Cecchini Dec 4, 2019

More cast members have joined leads Jared Harris and Lee Pace on the Apple TV+ adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation.

Well, they're trying to adapt Isaac Asimov's Foundation series for TV again. Foundation was headed for HBO back in 2014 with Jonathan Nolan at the helm, but that version vanished into space. But now David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles) are tackling the extraordinarily dense and cerebral series for Skydance Television. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross, and Robyn Asimov will serve as executive producers.

Asimov's core three Foundation novels, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation are all worth your time. There's a secondary group of sequels, too, but really, these are the big three you should be concerned with. Any one of these books contains enough character and world building to fill multiple seasons of TV, so hopefully,...

David Goyer to adapt Isaac Asimov's Foundation into TV series
Isaac Asimov's seminal Foundation book series is one of those white whales, like Rendezvous With Rama, that seems like it would never see the light of day. Not only is it a sprawling, multi-character, and complexly political work, but also many of its best ideas have already been cannibalized by things like Star Wars (a similar problem John Carter faced). So the challenge to adapting... Read More...

Skydance Trying Asimov’s ‘Foundation’ As TV Series; David Goyer, Josh Friedman To Adapt
Jared Harris, Lou Llobell, Lee Pace, Laura Birn, and Leah Harvey in Foundation (2021)
Exclusive: The Isaac Asimov science fiction trilogy Foundation heavily informed Star Wars and many other sci-fi films and TV series, but for decades it has confounded Hollywood attempts at a straight adaptation. I'm hearing that Skydance, David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman are going to try to crack it. Skydance Television is closing a deal with the Asimov estate to try turning Foundation into a sprawling TV series. Originally published as a short story series in Astounding…...

Bob Ingersoll: Captain Marvel Fails At Being Civil
The Law Is A Ass Installment # 401

Despite Marvel’s claims about Captain Marvel being a human-Kree hybrid, she must really be an X-Man… because she certainly x-acerbated the whole Ulysses Cain problem.

Civil War II is a series about said the Inhuman Ulysses Cain and the problems he caused for the Marvel Universe. Ulysses, you see, was a seer; able to predict the future. He used mathematics to, “determine, to within a fraction of a percent, the probability that certain events are going to take place.” Kind of like Isaac Asimov’s psychohistory, only more refined. In Dr. Asimov’s Foundation series, Hari Seldon used psychohistory – a discipline that combined history, sociology, and statistical analysis – to make general projections about the future acts of very large groups of people. Ulysses’s brand of mathe-magic let him make specific projections about the future acts of specific people.

And why am I...

Jonathan Nolan reveals original Interstellar ending: 'It was simpler'
Jonathan Nolan in Person of Interest (2011)
Jonathan Nolan has revealed that sci-fi blockbuster Interstellar could have had a very different ending.

The 38-year-old, who co-wrote the script with his director brother Christopher Nolan, told an audience of scientists at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Lab that his original ending was "much more straightforward".

When asked what actually happened at the end of the film, Jonathan joked: "You've got the wrong brother."

According to Nerdist, the writer did go on to explain how he had intended the film to end, saying: "The Einstien-Rosen bridge (would) collapse when Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) tries to send the data back."

This would mean that there would have been no way for Cooper to return home or find Brand (Anne Hathaway), and he would have fallen into a black hole.

The film's real ending sees Cooper launch himself into the black hole Gargantua in the aim of sending data back to Earth.

He survives...

HBO Orders Westworld to Series for 2015 Debut; Watch the First Brief Teaser
Jonathan Nolan officially has another show on the air. HBO announced today (via Twitter, obviously) that is has ordered to series Nolan’s adaptation of writer/director Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi film Westworld, which revolved around a malfunctioning Wild West robot at a futuristic adult amusement park. The official, cryptic logline for this HBO series is as follows: Westworld is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin. Nolan, of course, is the brother of Christopher Nolan and has co-written the screenplays for films like The Dark Knight and Interstellar, but he also acts as the creator/executive producer of the CBS series Person of Interest and is developing another potential HBO show in the form of an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s sci-fi series Foundation. Hit the jump for more on the Westworld TV show and to watch the first brief teaser trailer for the series,...

Jonathan Nolan Developing Asimov's Foundation for HBO
I love science fiction movies and TV shows, but I'm not very well versed in much science fiction literature. While I'm familiar with author Isaac Asimov, I haven't read the Foundation book trilogy. Sources have told The Wrap that Jonathan Nolan has quietly been developing Foundation for HBO and Warner Bros. In a recent interview, he coincidentally talked about Foundation.

Nolan via Indiewire:

"Well, I fucking love the ‘Foundation’ novels by Isaac Asimov. They're certainly not [unknown], but that's a set of books I think everyone would benefit from reading. That's a set of books where the influence they have is just fucking massive. They have many imitators and many have been inspired by them, but go back and read those, and there are some ideas in those that'll set your fucking hair on fire.”

It sounds like I better read that book series. Nolan has proven himself to be a solid writer and producer,...

At the head of the project is Interstellar screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, who will write and produce the series, as reported by TheWrap. It should be noted that Jonathan Nolan has had some experience in the art of adapting science fiction novels to television, as he has recently adapted Michael Chrichton’s Westworld which was also for HBO and Warner Bros. TV but in collaboration with, J.J. Abrams production company, Bad Robot.

Jonathan Nolan expressed his interest and excitement to work on the adaption of the trilogy in a recent interview with Indiewire.

Nolan Adapts Asmiov's "Foundation" For HBO
"Memento" and "Interstellar" scribe and "Person of Interest" creator Jonathan Nolan is set to write and produce "Foundation," an HBO and Warner Bros. TV series adaptation of Isaac Asimov's original novel trilogy of the same name.

Asimov penned the books back in the early 1950s, though followed it up with four more books in the 1980s. The original trilogy follows mathematician Hari Seldon, a man who has dedicated his life to developing psychohistory - a concept that is able to predict the future on a large scale.

When he foresees the imminent fall of the Galactic Empire and a dark age that will last thirty millenia, he sets out to create a foundation of talented artisans and engineers to preserve and expand on humanity's collective knowledge with the hope of establishing a new empire.

Sony Pictures acquired the rights several years ago to the property with Roland Emmerich attached to direct and produce.

Christopher Nolan’s Brother to Adapt Isaac Asimov’s Foundation for HBO
Jonathan Nolan in Person of Interest (2011)
After spending years on the screenplay to his brother's Interstellar, Jonathan Nolan is going back into space: The Wrap reports that the younger Nolan is working with HBO on an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. It's Nolan's second project with the network after J.J. Abrams's planned Westworld adaptation and his third TV show overall. (He previously created Person of Interest.) Asimov's seven-book series concerns the rise and fall of new galactic empires; Nolan previously told IndieWire the books contain "ideas ... that'll set your fucking hair on fire." If the Foundation show takes off, Jonathan Nolan will finally be "Christopher Nolan's brother" no more. At least in the career sense. In the fraternal sense, they will likely remain bonded.

Interstellar Scribe Jonah Nolan Developing Sci-Fi Series Foundation For HBO
The man behind the man behind Interstellar, Jonathan Nolan, is developing a new sci-fi series for HBO and Wbtv called Foundation. Based on the trilogy of futuristic novels by decorated genre author Isaac Asimov, Nolan’s adaptation will be his second collaboration with HBO following his current work on Westworld.

Foundation was originally set up over at Sony with Roland Emmerich lined up to direct. After they let the rights slip, HBO forked out a small fortune to acquire them and have now got Nolan, an unabashed fan of the novels, on board to write and produce.

The first in the series, Foundation “follows mathematician Hari Seldon, who has dedicated his life to developing psychohistory, a concept that uses the laws of mass action to predict the future on a large scale. When he foresees the imminent fall of the Galactic Empire and a dark age that will 30,000 years, he...
