A drama about one of New York's most prestigious ad agencies at the beginning of the 1960s, focusing on one of the firm's most mysterious but extremely talented ad executives, Donald Draper.
Matthew Weiner wrote the pilot of Mad Men in 1999 while working on the Ted Danson sitcom Becker (1998). In 2002, Weiner sent the pilot as a writing sample to David Chase, who created The Sopranos (1999).

Office doors and office locations are different in the pilot than in later episodes. Most of the offices in the pilot do not even have names on the outside yet.
