Although it is never stated in the film; the play takes place in 1924 and supposedly film is set in the late 20's. But in the beginning of the movie, you can clearly see that the newspaper Mr. Whittaker's reading is dated as Tuesday, October 10, 1930. Also, 10th of October in the year 1930 was on Friday.
