Say goodbye to those New Year greetings and memes, because February is almost here. Time to really sink our teeth into 2025 and how it’ll look, and of course that means beefing up your watchlist. As always the libraries of Hulu and Disney+ (and multiple available bundles) are here to help, with new shows and movies (both family friendly and… a little unfriendly) available to stream.
Along with ongoing episodes of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” Disney+ will debut all of “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” Season 2 and plenty of other great titles for young viewers. “The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl” special will recapture the magic of a live performance, and “Harlem Ice” follows a girls’ figure skating team through their competitive season.

This article contains major spoilers for "Squid Game" season 2.
The first season of Hwang Dong-hyuk's smash hit series "Squid Game" ended with a winner. Player 456, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), was the last man standing, winning 45.6 billion won and changing his life permanently. At the end of "Squid Game" season 2, not only was Gi-hun back in the games, but after seven episodes, the games were still ongoing. Players split themselves into two factions — those who want to keep playing, and those who want to go home while they still can — with Gi-hun leading a riot against the guards that unfortunately failed almost as quickly as it began. This shocking cliffhanger will certainly keep audiences hooked until season 3 arrives sometime in the summer of 2025, but for those who were wise enough to stay around after the credits rolled, there's an even bigger mystery hanging over the games.

This is our final round-up before the end of 2024, and it’s a good one. There are plenty of gift ideas lurking here––some choices to enjoy during time off, too. Note also that The Film Stage Holiday Gift Guide includes a list of my favorite cinema books from the last 12 months. One of those picks kicks off this column, and it is written by none other than the great Al Pacino.
Sonny Boy by Al Pacino (Penguin Press)
Al Pacino’s memoir, Sonny Boy, is easily one of the most eagerly awaited books of 2024. And for me, this look at the actor’s life and career more than lives up to the hype. Many highlights have already earned some social-media chatter––most notably young Al’s penis trauma (!), a near-death experience after a recent bout with Covid, and the reasons behind his decision to do Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill.

In Dennis Dugan's widely maligned 2011 comedy film "Jack and Jill," Adam Sandler played Jack, an advertising executive who was desperate to close a valuable account with Dunkin' Donuts. Jack million-dollar idea for the campaign is to secure the services of Al Pacino, as his name sorta-rhymes with the bakery's new coffee product, the Dunkaccino. Pacino plays himself in "Jack and Jill," and Jack repeatedly tries to get the actor's attention in public, as to make an impromptu ad pitch. Jack only becomes successful after Pacino expresses romantic interest in his twin sister Jill (also Sandler).
Audiences are then "treated" to the complete version of Jack's Dunkin' Donuts commercial, and it has become the stuff of cinematic infamy. Pacino raps awkwardly about the Dunkaccino, making references to his own filmography. Sample lyrics: "Attica, hoohah, latte lite/This whole trial is out of sight/They pulled me back in with hazelnut,...

Ben Stiller went uncredited on the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore, where he had a small role as Hal L., a nursing home orderly who torments the elderly people in his care, dropping lines like, “You can trouble me for a warm glass of shut-the-hell-up!” Nearly thirty years later, Stiller is bringing Hal L. back to life, as he has been spotted on the set of the currently-filming Happy Gilmore 2!

In Jack and Jill, Adam Sandler hilariously embraced the challenge of playing both twins who can’t stand each other. The comedy follows their chaotic antics as Jack desperately tries to convince Al Pacino, yes, the legendary actor himself is in the movie, (quite possibly the wirdiest detour he ever took) to star in an ad for him. The catch? Jack has to tolerate his sister Jill, because, surprise! Pacino has a crush on her!

Despite the film being one of the most roasted in his career, Sandler threw himself into both roles like a champ, especially when it came to the fabulously over-the-top Jill.

In his comedy career, Adam Sandler has truly done it all, even donning a dress and playing a woman, and let’s be honest, he did it with his whole heart and soul!

"Jack and Jill" is Al Pacino's lowest-rated film, sitting at a measly 3% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Tomatometer consensus reads "impossible to recommend on any level whatsoever." Jennie Punter of Globe and Mail calls the movie "cruel and creepy, not funny." Mary F. Pols from Time magazine wrote, "More than 24 hours has passed since I watched the new Adam Sandler movie 'Jack and Jill' and I am still dead inside." The movie's only achievement is winning all 12 of its Razzie nominations, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor, Worst Actress (with Adam Sandler winning for both), and Worst Screenplay.

Al Pacino is opening up about going broke a little over ten years ago.
The 84-year-old actor shared in his new memoir, “Sonny Boy,” that he had a corrupt account and lost millions of dollars. That account eventually went to prison for their crimes.

In his book, the Oscar winner shared in 2011, he started “to get warnings that my accountant at the time, a guy who had lots of celebrity clients, was not to be trusted.”
After the accountant’s mismanagement of his finances and over spending, Al says he “went broke.”
“In this business, when you make $10 million dollars for a film, it’s not $10 million. Because after the lawyers, and the agents, and the publicist, and the government, it’s not $10 million, it’s four and half in your pocket,” he wrote. “But you’re living above that because you’re high on the hog.

Al Pacino has opened up about having to make drastic career changes at one point in his life after losing all his money in a Ponzi scheme.
The veteran actor shared in his recently published memoir Sonny Boy that he “had $50 million, and then I had nothing” due to a corrupt accountant, who eventually served time in prison for the scheme. Pacino said in 2011, he started “to get warnings that my accountant at the time, a guy who had lots of celebrity clients, was not to be trusted.”
Following the scheme, the Oscar-winning actor said he “was broke” after overspending and the accountant’s mismanaging of his finances.

Finally, it seems we have an explanation as to why Al Pacino starred in Adam Sandler’s “Jack and Jill.”
The Al Dunkaccino rap has lived rent free in many a cinephile’s minds since the infamously maligned film came out in 2011. Now, Pacino is claiming that he only took on the role because he lost all of his finances as part of Ponzi scheme.

Pacino said that he “had property, but I didn’t have any money” due to his over-spending. Perhaps he shouldn’t have turned down “Star Wars”….

Despite his acclaim as a Hollywood star, Al Pacino has revealed that his spending habits have continually placed him in severe financial trouble.
In his new memoir Sonny Boy, Pacino revealed, “When I finished making The Godfather, I was broke, not that I ever had any money, but now I owed money…my manager and agents got their cuts of my salary while I had to live on support from [ex-girlfriend] Jill Clayburgh.”
Pacino made $35,000 for his role as Michael Corleone in the first installment of The Godfather and he reprised the 1972 role in 1974 due to his money struggles.

While it may have looked like Al Pacino may have cynically made movies just for a paycheck at a certain point in the 2000s era, the Academy Award-winning star admits that it is what it seems. However, it was also out of desperation. You may be seeing Pacino making the promotional rounds lately. This is because the iconic Godfather and Scarface star is releasing an autobiography titled Sonny Boy (which is named after the nickname his mother would call him). In Sonny Boy, Pacino would be candid about falling prey to a crooked accountant who had lost all of his money in a Ponzi scheme, then eventually went to prison.

Al Pacino writes in his recently-published memoir “Sonny Boy” that he was forced to make dramatic career changes after losing all of his money due to a corrupt accountant who eventually served seven and a half years in prison for running a Ponzi scheme. The accountant mismanaged the Oscar winner’s funds, bringing Pacino’s savings from a staggering $50 million to zero dollars.
According to Pacino, it was in 2011 when he started “to get warnings that my accountant at the time, a guy who had lots of celebrity clients, was not to be trusted.” The actor was already paying “a ridiculous amount of money to rent some big fancy house in Beverly Hills,” and then he took his entire family on a trip to Europe where he flew various guests overseas “on a gorgeous Gulfstream 550” and “rented out a whole floor of the Dorchester hotel in London.”

Even though Al Pacino is easily one of the most legendary actors of the past 50 years, that doesn’t mean everything he touched turned to gold. There are some real stinkers in his filmography. And one of those films is Adam Sandler’s “Jack and Jill.” While, at the time, there were people confused as to why Pacino would take on such a role, he’s coming clean now about the real reasons.

Oscar-winner Al Pacino is one of the iconic actors of his generation, boasting a resume that includes Dog Day Afternoon, Heat and The Godfather. The 84-year-old Pacino is prolific in other ways as well, with a son, Roman, who’s only a year old. Since the kid is way too young for, say, Serpico, what’s the first Pacino movie that Al wants to share with his boy? “I think,” he told The New York Times, “he should start off with Adam Sandler’s.”
Hoo hah. The only Sandler movie featuring Pacino is Jack and Jill, one of the absolute worst comedies of the Sandman’s career by any measure. It’s currently rocking a 3 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, despite “an inexplicably committed performance from Al Pacino.” Jack and Jill did clean up at the Razzies, winning (or losing) in the categories of Worst Actor (Sandler), Actress (Sandler), Prequel, Picture,...

A few days ago, it was announced that Happy Gilmore would be getting a new 4K Blu-ray release from the Kino Lorber video label. The ultra-high-definition transfer of the Adam Sandler comedy is due to hit retailers sometime early next year, presumably to coincide with the release of the Netflix sequel. It has now been announced, per Blu-ray.com, that Sandler’s previous breakout film, Billy Madison, will also be getting a 4K release from Kino Lorber that is scheduled to become available to consumers also early next year.
Billy Madison stars Adam Sandler, Darren McGavin, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Bradley Whitford, and Josh Mostel. The description reads, “Man-child Billy Madison has been a spoiled rich kid all his life, and spends his days drinking and partying. When his father, hotel magnate Brian, becomes fed up with his son’s irresponsible ways, he issues an ultimatum. Since Billy passed all his schooling...

The cast and director of the haunting thriller “Went Up the Hill” say the film helped them overcome their own “personal ghost” on set, and that hopeful journey to healing is what ultimately made them sign on to be part of the project.
“When I received the script, I was mourning someone who died. I was very much living with a ghost — it felt like living with a ghost,” actress Vicky Krieps told TheWrap’s Steve Pond at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design. “I didn’t know how to get rid of it [or] move past it. I received the script, not only was it challenging to think that we could play three people as two actors, but also the ghost component as the way I read it, in a modern psychological sense.”

Writer-director Samuel Van Grinsven says that his new film “Went Up the Hill” was inspired by a single image of two people in a room, a coffin between them, both equally mourning the person inside, but knowing next to nothing about one another.
His film, which debuts this week at the Toronto International Film Festival, sees a young man, Jack (Dacre Montgomery), travel to a remote part of New Zealand to attend the funeral of his estranged mother. There he meets her grieving widow, Jill (Vicky Krieps). But his mother’s spirit returns, inhabiting both of their bodies to speak to the other one and instigating a threatening three-way nocturnal dance.
The film is financed with principal production investment from the New Zealand Film Commission and Screen Australia with support from Screen CanterburyNZ, Create Nsw, Spectrum Films, Stage 23, Rm Sound, Head Gear Films, Fulcrum Media Finance and the New Zealand Government’s Screen Production Grant.

In Adam Sandler’s newest Netflix stand-up special Love You, the Uncut Gems and Jack and Jill star’s Safdie-Sandler era struggles under the massive weight of his many dick jokes.
Sandler’s first collaboration with the elite indie filmmaker Josh Safdie proved to be one of the most important projects of his career. When Uncut Gems premiered in 2019, it had been 17 years since Punch-Drunk Love last proved that The Sandman could pull off a more nuanced role than “man-child who yells a lot” in a film that’s more artistically ambitious than the average Dunkin’ Donuts commercial. The success of Uncut Gems led to a renaissance in Sandler’s non-family-film career as he went on to produce and star in more challenging projects in his pursuit of an Oscar nomination that continues to this day.

The trailer just dropped for Mr. Throwback, a new mockumentary series starring Happy Endings’ Adam Pally, Saturday Night Live’s Ego Nwodim and… The Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry?
Produced by David Wain, Mr. Throwback actually looks pretty funny for a show starring an NBA point guard in a prominent role. Come to think of it, there have been more than a few solid comedies featuring pro basketball players, such as…

When we think of White Men Can’t Jump, we tend to think of Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, and of course, Jeopardy! champion Rosie Perez.
But it also features former NBA player Marques Johnson as Raymond, an aggrieved victim of Billy and Syd’s hustle. Johnson later revealed that the character was based on real-life basketball player Reggie Harding, who died tragically in 1972.

Who do you think would die first in a four-way battle royale between Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler? Who do you think has had the least inspiring film career between those four? Are both answers the same?
Look, anyone who has ever written and starred in a mid-budget comedy produced by a major studio is doing pretty okay from a career standpoint, so it would be ludicrous to suggest that any of the men mentioned above is somehow a failure, despite what their biggest haters may say. But speaking of haters, only one of those four funnymen has a large and devoted anti-stan movement on Twitter that relishes in taking every opportunity to snarkily reply to a picture of him lighting a giant fake bong at a Hollywood Bowl show and tell him, “We get it man.”

Al Pacino is considered to be one of the greatest names ever to be working in front of the camera. He is often considered to be one of the most prestigious names; after all, he has an extensive collection of films that have been smash-hit blockbusters across his stellar career. From The Godfather to House of Gucci, Pacino has several iconic roles.

However, none of the movie connoisseurs had imagined in their wildest dreams that the Scent of a Woman actor could give a flop in his career. That thought became a reality in 2011, when he decided to collaborate with Adam Sandler on probably the weirdest film of his career.
Without a shadow of a doubt, everyone’s perspective on the actor changed, as they thought that he was nearing the end of his Hollywood stardom after 55 years.

Hailed as one of the most prestigious actors of the 20th century, Al Pacino has done copious blockbuster films throughout his career spanning over five decades. But who would’ve thought we’d get to see him go from playing chilling gangster roles to a comical coffee connoisseur? That’s right, nobody could’ve foreseen that plot twist.

Even industry juggernauts like The Godfather star aren’t immune to a few bad days at the cinemas (that’s code for flops), and his movie with Adam Sandler was one such out-of-the-pan-and-into-the-fire kind of collaboration. Save for the epic commercial that perhaps echos one of the greatest moments in cinema history.

Adam Sandler might be a comedic genius but Jack and Jill certainly didn’t make it to the list of ‘most hilarious movies of all time.

With a career that has lasted over 50 years, it’s expected that Al Pacino would have some stinkers. But nothing is worse on the resume of Pacino than 2011’s Jack and Jill – hey, at least Gigli streamed on the Criterion Channel. For his performance as himself, he earned the Worst Supporting Actor Razzie…but also gave us one of the best ads in history.
In Jack and Jill, Al Pacino is recruited by Adam Sandler’s Jack to do a commercial for the Dunkaccino, a coffee/hot chocolate blend that Dunkin’ Donuts actually discontinued last year. Although he doesn’t have a credit, much of that scene came about because of Robert Smigel, who came onboard before Pacino was even cast. Loving Adam Sandler means making your peace with the actor's wildly inconsistent output. It's not like The Sandman has ever been a critical darling; even during his rise to superstardom in the '90s, "Happy Gilmore" and "The Wedding Singer" were the only movies of his that you could reasonably call well-reviewed (and that's coming from an ardent "Billy Madison" defender). But the films that he's churned out under his Happy Madison Productions, which was founded in 1999, have been all over the place quality-wise. Even most die-hard Sandlites probably wouldn't go to the mattresses over stinkers like "Jack and Jill" and "Grown Ups 2."
That's only become doubly true since Sandler entered his alliance with Netflix in the 2010s. Sometimes, you end up with little more than "content" for viewers to stream and immediately forget, but you can also get remarkably good stuff like "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected...

In 2014, Glenn Howerton took part in an Ask Me Anything (Ama) session on Reddit, mostly answering questions about "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." One of the questions from user cujoman2004 was, "If you could have anyone make a guest appearance on 'Always Sunny,' who would it be and for what purpose would you want this person to do?" Howerton responded:
"Al Pacino. Just to have him like, scream at me for five straight minutes. And then wander out of the bar after realizing he was screaming at the wrong person."
While there have been many fabulous guest stars on "Always Sunny," including Bryan Cranston, Guillermo del Toro, and Josh Groban, having an actor of Al Pacino's stature would be truly unforgettable, especially in a show that is so off-the-wall. But Pacino is not afraid to go wild and weird. He's flourished in many comedies, from the lighthearted, family-friendly affair "Author!

For a time, it seemed like an auteur war was about to break out over Adam Sandler, with some of America’s most revered directors vying to find the right role for the comedian. It was rumored, but never confirmed, that Quentin Tarantino imagined him a key role while writing Inglourious Basterds, although this might have been wishful thinking from critics who saw the talented Sandler heading in the same direction as John Travolta until Pulp Fiction saved him from a lifetime of Look Who’s Talking movies. In the end, Paul Thomas Anderson got there first, with Punch Drunk Love (2002), although the glow of a bona fide arthouse hit didn’t last long, and Jack and Jill still happened less than ten years later.
Nevertheless, though he returned to the fanbase, Sandler has always been good in serious supporting roles, even in films that don’t broadly work, like...

It’s a fairly packed month on Hulu this February thanks to the addition of some interesting TV shows from FX and ABC. While the streamer’s own original content is somewhat limited – Life + Beth is returning for season 2 – you can also catch the new series of Feud this month. The new installment in Ryan Murphy’s juicy anthology show is based on the bestseller Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer, and tells the story of Truman Capote’s betrayal and fall-out with New York’s most glamorous socialites. The cast is absolutely stacked, with Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny and Calista Flockhart all swearing delicious revenge on Tom Hollander’s Capote.

There’s a war going on inside many Adam Sandler movies and the loser is frequently the audience. Sandler may be an innately lovable performer, but his sense of humor is also abrasive and immature. So for every great Sandler comedy like “Happy Gilmore” or the overlooked “Hubie Halloween” — films that strike a satisfying balance between charm and adolescent weirdness — there are also films like “That’s My Boy” and “Jack and Jill,” where our affection for Sandler can’t quite compensate for an overwhelming cavalcade of mean-spirited “jokes” that confuse bullying with whimsy.
But when Sandler delves into the world of family-friendly animation he usually sets aside his vicious streak, so his childish humor and uncomplicated moralizing can shine through. You won’t find much of his immaturity in the “Hotel Transylvania” movies or in his new animated Netflix film “Leo” — which he co-wrote with Robert Smigel and Paul Sado...

After a Sundance screening in 2002, Lucky McKee’s cult classic horror film May (watch it Here) earned a wider release in 2003 – and to mark the twentieth anniversary of that release, Second Sight Films is giving the film a special edition Blu-ray release in the UK that is packed with hours of bonus features! The release date is July 24th and the Blu-ray can be pre-ordered at This Link – but keep in mind that the Blu-ray is locked to Region B.
Written and directed by McKee, May has the following synopsis: Young misfit May endured a difficult childhood because of her lazy eye. And though contact lenses have helped May adjust as a young adult, her deep-seated awkwardness remains a problem. Adam, a young man obsessed with fixing wrecked cars, takes a shine to May’s oddball ways. But May’s strangeness ultimately drives him away, leaving her open to the advances of her co-worker Polly.
