You could say that this was an inevitability given the amount of remakes, reboots and reimaginings that have graced the big-screen over the last decade or so. Indeed with more and more television adaptations working with cinema audiences, it’s no real surprise to hear that cult television series Charlie’s Angels is getting a second outing (via THR / The Tracking Board).
Sony has announced that a new version of the show is set for a reboot after the project had originally had two big-screen versions in 2000 and 2003 respectively. With the likes of Baywatch (read our review here), 21/22 Jump Street, CHiPS and others taking to the big-screen with mixed results (Baywatch opens in the Us tomorrow), it’s now seemingly the time to revisit the series.
Already attached to direct the film is Elizabeth Banks, who made her directorial debut on 2015’s Pitch Perfect 2 with Angels marking her sophomore effort.

In news that is both great, and carved directly from common sense, Elizabeth Banks is forging ahead with her blossoming directing career, by apparently entering negotiations for the director’s chair of a Charlie’s Angels reboot for Sony. She would also produce the film. With the big screen update of the TV show 21 Jump Street having been incredibly successful – creating a franchise for Columbia and MGM in the process – it seems Sony would like to try its hand at doing the same for the popular female-led action adventure tale, breathing new life into a movie franchise that stalled over a decade ago.
The original Charlie’s Angels series ran from 1976 to 1981, and starred Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett – although Fawcett was replaced by Cheryl Ladd after the first season. The lead actresses played skilled private detectives working for an elusive, unseen supervisor called Charlie, with the assistance...

Despite a fantastic Christmas at the box office, 81 million people didn’t buy movie tickets this year. Not only were this year’s domestic admissions of 1.259 billion off 6% from 2013’s 1.34B, but the number of tickets sold hit their lowest level since 1995 when 1.211B people went to the cinema. Calculations are based on this year’s 3Q ticket price average of $8.12 from the National Association of Theater Owners, just a penny off from 2013’s $8.13. The upside is that thanks to Christmas, 2014 crossed $10 billion with a current estimated running cume for January 1-December 28 of $10.22B per Rentrak Theatrical. Some of the major studios are still on holiday with final figures set to be released on January 5. Here at Deadline we’re weighing 2014 according to the fiscal year of January 1-December 31, and we’ll be providing updates about the year along the way (studios tend to include the first weekend of January...

News broke over the weekend that Emilia Clarke, one of the stars of HBO’s Game of Thrones, would be assuming the role of Sarah Connor in the upcoming reboot of the Terminator films. The role was originated by Linda Hamilton, who played Connor in The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Most recently, Clarke’s Thrones co-star, Lena Headey, played the character on the short-lived TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Clarke had been rumored to be a front-runner for the role for several weeks, up against Brie Larson (21 Jump Street). She is the first official cast member to come onboard the production outside of Arnold Schwarzenegger- who has a deal to reprise his role as the T-800 cyborg sent from the future to protect Connor. Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) is said to be in final talks to play her son, John. It’s been reported that...

All of the week's hot casting news in one fell swoop ...
• Ellen Page will be starring in "Into the Forest," the story of two teenage sisters living in rural Northern California as society seems to decay and collapse around them. As if that should alarm the girl who saw buildings fold in on themselves and stuff in "Inception." [The Playlist]
• Another thesp is packing his bags for "Sin City." Josh Brolin, who appeared in director Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror," will be playing the central role of Dwight (played by Clive Owen in the original film) in "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For." Now how about some casting news on the film's femme fatale, Ava Lord, already? [MovieWeb]
• After a four-year hiatus from the big screen (save for some voice work in "Happy Feet Two"), Robin Williams is back and heading down Dito Montiel's "Boulevard." Williams will play a devoted husband...

It is very hard to quantify a film viewing experience. Just because a film is well made, it doesn’t mean it is as entertaining as another, and vice versa. Just because a story is gripping, doesn’t mean it has better acting than a rival motion picture. Judgment and ‘ranking’ is cruel and unfair. Emotion and frame of mind are chaotic factors. Watching something at the wrong time can have a major impact on one’s opinion of the movie. But I’m a glutton for punishment, so…with nothing but the Olympics on everyone’s mind it seems fitting to start ‘ranking’ some of the year’s films of note.
Never one to think in black and white, I felt that simply having a list of 5 best and 5 worst would be cheap. So what sits below are six…you heard me, six separate categories. The tabling works, as always,...

Channing Tatum is a shirtless hit in Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, which grossed nearly $20m on opening day. Magic Mike opened better than Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve, and Ocean's Thirteen, despite an ensemble cast that included George Clooney, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Casey Affleck, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bernie Mac, Al Pacino, Scott Caan, and Andy Garcia. The film is the third Tatum hit this year, following The Vow, with Rachel McAdams, and 21 Jump Street, with Jonah Hill. His only flop in 2012 has been Haywire. Also in the Magic MIke cast: Alex Pettyfer, Olivia Munn, Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, James Martin Kelly, Reid Carolin , Cody Horn, Avery Camp, Adam Rodriguez, Kevin Nash, and Gabriel Iglesias. Magic Mike trailed only one movie on Friday: the Seth MacFarlane / Mark Wahlberg / Mila Kunis comedy Ted.

(Markus Schleinzer) Michael Fuith, David Rauchenberger, Gisella Salcher. 96 mins
The daily routine of an Austrian paedophile who keeps a young boy locked in his cellar was hardly something anyone was queuing up to see, but this challenges us, and itself, to take a look. At the same time, it thankfully averts its gaze from scenes of actual abuse. There are keen observations on parenting, privacy, power relations and more, but the flat, factual approach verges on dull, and the absence of empathy ultimately just leaves you feeling grubby. So get in line for the grimmest movie of the year!
This Means War (12A)
(McG, 2012, Us) Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Reese Witherspoon. 98 mins
Two suspiciously close CIA buddies fall out when they discover they're dating the same woman – cue the misuse of government equipment and their own combat skills for one-upmanship. The romcom high concept is novel for a good reason: it's completely ridiculous.

Here we are, a brand-new year full of brand-new movies (or brand-new versions of old movies). 2011 is behind us and we’ve got a clean slate, and new adventures to go on. Now comes the time where we make a list of all the films we’re looking forward to, right? Wrong.
If I were to write out a list compiling everything I’m excited for this year, not only would it be long but it probably wouldn’t vary much from every other list that’s already out there, placement aside. And personally, I almost find it more interesting to hear about what someone isn’t looking forward to. No, what someone is loathing, the films that make them physically sick just by thinking about them, the cinematic abominations that they pray will fail miserably and destroy the careers of everyone involved in it. You know, the stinky ones.

“Before you can be Sean Penn, you have to be Spicoli. Before you can be Johnny Depp, you have to do 21 Jump Street.” This is how McG explains away any fanboy outrage about his directing of Terminator Salvation. Is he being overly defensive? Maybe, maybe not. This is a guy who’s been the focus of message board rage since it was announced he was bringing back the Terminator franchise to the big screen. “I hate that fuc*ing guy McG,” he jokes at the Warner Brothers panel at New York Comic-Con. Moments after the presentation of a kick-ass (and very, very loud) specially edited trailer, I find myself tucked away with McG and a few fellow online journalists in a bland, cozy meeting room. McG is among the friendliest interview subjects I’ve ever seen. Within three minutes he’s confided that he still suffers a tremendous fear of flying,...
