To kick off 2025, Netflix has added a new slate of films to its streaming library, highlighted by Dune: Part Two. Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi blockbuster, which Consequence named the fourth best film of 2024, is streaming on the service as of January 1st.

Dune: Part Two, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and more, remains available to stream on Max. The first Dune movie can also be streamed on both Netflix and Max. Additionally, both films are available to purchase together in 4K Uhd.

Other new titles available to stream on Netflix as of January 1st include Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire; Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga; Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 1; The Watchers; Inception; Meet the Parents and its sequels Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers; Apollo 13; Love Actually; Schindler’s List; the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy; Rush Hour franchise; and Bruce Almighty.

The SAG-AFTRA President will star opposite Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, The Creator, Odessa A’zion, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary a.k.a Mr. Wonderful and Abel Ferrara.

The original screenplay written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein is based loosely on Marty Reisman’s life, set in the world of 1950s Ping Pong culture. Reisman was known to be unconventional in the sport, yet won two U.S. Men’s Singles Championships in 1958 and 1960 and more than 20 international and national titles. He became famous for mastering the hardbat style, a traditional style of table tennis that uses a racket without a sponge layer to emphasize control and spin over speed and power. His mastery of the sport earned him a reputation as one of table tennis’ last greats of that era.

“The Nanny” star and SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher has joined the cast of Josh Safdie’s table tennis movie “Marty Supreme.” She will play the mother of Timothée Chalamet’s character.

Starring alongside Chalamet and Drescher are Gwyneth Paltrow (in her first on-screen movie role since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”) and Tyler, the Creator (in his film debut). Odessa A’zion also stars alongside magician Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller), investor and “Shark Tank” personality Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful) and “Bad Lieutenant” filmmaker Abel Ferrara.

From A24, “Marty Supreme” follows Chalamet as a young ping pong pro. Plot details are scant, but the studio is touting the film as a “fictional work set in the world of 1950s ping pong culture.” Variety broke news of the project, which is currently in production, in July.

And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.

In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. One of the two upcoming Halloween games will be developed by pixel platformer specialists WayForward. The studio’s also working on an Ash Vs Evil Dead title.

It was announced on the 12th August that Boss Team Games is busy making two new videogames based on John Carpenter’s Halloween slasher franchise. We’ve since learned that one of those will be a 16-bit style platformer developed by WayForward.

As first reported by Eurogamer, WayForward is also working on a similarly early 90s-themed action game based on Ash Vs Evil Dead. Both games are part of Boss Team’s RetroRealms series, which implies we might be in for more sprite-filled titles based on classic film properties in the near future.

Hundreds of members of the Animation Guild, along with fellow IATSE members joining in solidarity, gathered at the IATSE 80 headquarters in Burbank on Saturday ahead of Monday’s start of contract negotiations.

The crowd was over twice that of the Guild’s previous rally in 2022. Animation writer and negotiating committee member Joey Clift told TheWrap that the union had over 2,000 RSVPs as of Friday, doubling the number of the 2022 event. He estimated that nearly 2,500 people attended in the near 90-degree heat.

Mike Rianda, animator known for his work on “Gravity Falls,” emceed the festivities Saturday afternoon. Rianda kicked off the rally by bringing up six “animation avengers” to the stage to rally the crowd, including “Steven Universe” creator Rebecca Sugar, “Hotel Transylvania” and “Samurai Jack” creator Genndy Tartakovsky and legendary Disney and DreamWorks animator James Baxter.

Fixed is back on the prowl following Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to drop the completed film.

The animated movie from director and co-writer Genndy Tartakovsky is no longer getting a release from Wbd, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. A co-production between Sony Pictures Animation and New Line, the feature was set up by the AT&T-owned WarnerMedia before the 2022 merger that led to David Zaslav running Wbd. Fixed was initially planned for release on the streaming service that was then known as HBO Max.

Wbd worked with Fixed’s team to cover production costs and enable the filmmakers to find an alternate buyer. Rights for Fixed have reverted to producer Sony, which is shopping the project.

While WB is known for shelving projects fans want to see, the decision to scrap Tartakovsky’s Fixed is baffling. Tartakovsky is by many measures one of Cartoon Network’s premiere contributors, with hits like Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, and Primal to his name. Warner Bros./New Line is no longer releasing Sony Pictures Animation’s “Fixed,” an adult animated comedy from writer/director Genndy Tartakovsky, Variety has learned. The distribution rights are back with Sony Pictures Animation, which is looking at a new distribution plan for the film.

Warner Bros. Discovery dropping a Tartakovsky animated title is shocking, as he is probably the biggest star to come from the company’s Cartoon Network system and was integral in its early and long-term success, having created “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Samurai Jack,” “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” and “Primal.” He also produced “The Powerpuff Girls.” In 2022, Tartakovsky signed an exclusive, multi-year, cross-studio overall deal with Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.

He has also been a significant figure for Sony. The first three “Hotel Transylvania” films, all directed by Tartakovsky and produced by the company, have grossed $1.38 billion globally.

Warner Bros has reportedly handed Fixed, an animated comedy from the director of Hotel Transylvania, back to Sony Pictures Animation.

In the wake of Warner Bros Discovery announcing its startling $10bn quarterly loss, a report has emerged that the company has decided not to release Fixed, an adult animated comedy from Hotel Transylvania filmmaker Genndy Tartakovsky.

Under its original deal, Warner Bros Pictures was distributor for Fixed, with the film itself being a joint venture between production companies New Line Cinema and Sony Pictures Animation. Work on Fixed was completed in September 2023 and it was even submitted to the MPAA (which gave it an R rating) but little had been heard from the production in the months since.

Hannah Minghella is exiting her post at Bad Robot to head feature animation and live-action at Netflix.

Minghella will report to new film head Dan Lin, who recently reorganized the division to place more of an emphasis on genre. Along with Minghella, Sharon Taylor is returning to Netflix to head up production on feature animation based out of Vancouver.

Karen Toliver, who was tapped to lead film animation in 2022, and feature animation president Traci Balthazor will be leaving Netflix after launching films like Leo and Nimona.

As previously reported, the new structure will see Ori Marmur oversee action, fantasy, horror and sci-fi titles, while Kira Goldberg will handle thrillers, dramas and family films. Niija Kuykendall will oversee faith-based, young adult and holiday offerings, while Jason Young will handle comedies and rom-coms.

Minghella most recently served as film president of JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot shingle, where she worked for four years.

Veteran studio executive and producer Hannah Minghella has joined Netflix as head of feature animation and live-action family film, Variety can exclusively report.

Minghella joins the tech giant from Bad Robot, where she worked across live action, animation and documentary features. She’ll now report to Dan Lin, the recently installed chariman of Netflix’s film operation. In addition to Minghella, Sharon Taylor will return to Netflix to lead production at the unit. Based in Vancouver, Taylor was previously the CEO of Animal Logic studios.

“Hannah brings her unique skill set and experience to this role, along with strong relationships with top filmmakers. As a studio executive and producer, Hannah has overseen many franchise films across animation and live-action. Netflix has announced tonight that the Hotel Transylvania franchise will return with “Motel Transylvania,” a brand new animated series set to premiere sometime in 2025.

Netflix previews, “Motel Transylvania is a new series that follows Drac & Mavis as they head to California and try to set up a brand new resort for humans and monsters!”

The animated series comes in the wake of four animated movies released between 2012 and 2022. Hotel Transylvania: Transformania was advertised as being the series’ final film.
