  • When her greedy employers discover that Alice Howell's legacy is arriving in a parcel, they fete her. When it turns out to be a wooden leg, they throw her (and it) out. By the time they discover the legacy is in the wooden leg, she's moved on to be the slavey at a poorly run school.

Alice was sometimes billed as 'The Female Chaplin". However, while Chaplin was a bum with the remnants of gentility, Alice was a lower-class working girl, usually a maid or hash slinger, kicking people who bothered her. She's in fine form here, with a gormless expression, a right hook and an ability to take 108 falls like the pro she was.

There's a good-sized cast in this Emerald Comedy directed by her husband, Dick Smith. Only a few of them have been identified.
