Happy Friday, everybody, and it's a pleasantly surprising one for me. Due to some scheduling complications with our video team, I thought there wouldn't be an Ask Alan ready for today. But it turns out the one I recorded earlier this week got completed before life got busy for the video guys. That said, there's a good chance that this will be the last Ask Alan for a couple of weeks, and hopefully not longer than that. In this one, I was asked to identify my favorite shows-within-shows — excluding ones where they were the whole point of the series, like Tgs on 30 Rock, Fyi on Murphy Brown, Sports Night on Sports Night, etc. — to talk about shows I wound up enjoying less because I was reviewing them weekly, and to identify other cliffhanger resolutions that were as unsurprising as what Game of Thrones did this week. As always, you can...

Filmmaker was in post production on comedy Aquatic Effect.
Icelandic-French filmmaker Solveig Anspach died on Friday (Aug 7), aged 54, after a battle with cancer.
The Iceland born writer-director was a graduate of La Femis in Paris.

Her 2012 film, Queen of Montreuil, won the Lina Mangiacapre Award in Venice Days and the audience award at the Reykjavik International Film Festival.

It’s been less than three weeks since Ke$ha bravely checked herself into rehab for an eating disorder, and it sounds like she’s already feeling better! The ‘Timber’ singer took time out to thank her fans for their support in an emotional message her friend posted to Ke$ha’s Twitter account. How sweet!
Ke$ha, who checked into a Chicago-area rehab center on Jan. 3 to seek treatment for an eating disorder, doesn’t have access to social media in the facility but that didn’t stop her from releasing a long and uplifting message to her fans on Jan. 21. “I’m overwhelmed to tears” by all the support, Ke$ha said via her friend.

'Playing Fagin was one of the happiest times of my life. I loved the boys' mischievous minds – I wanted to make them laugh'
Mark Lester, actor (Oliver Twist)
The auditions had narrowed down to two other boys and me. We were put in a room in a London hotel and Carol Reed, the director, ordered the dismayed hotel barber to cut our hair badly to resemble a workhouse style. Then he just looked and looked at us, and we were sent home with this awful hair. When I heard I'd got the part, my reaction was that it was a chance to miss a lot of school. Actually, I spent most of the time in my dressing room reading Sherlock Holmes.
Ron Moody, who played Fagin, was very jolly and used to play cards with us boys between shoots. But we were all terrified of Oliver Reed. He was one...

HollywoodNews.com: Kanye West always seems ready to stir things up and leave people wondering, and that is no different when it comes to his Twitter. West recently deleted all his tweets and then wrote the message, "Be Back Soon," states UsMagazine.com. West currently has 8.6 million followers on Twitter. West has most recently been tweeting about his romance with Kim Kardashian as he posted pictures of her that she had apparently sent to him. What do you think he is up to? Looks like Kanye West is looking for a fresh start.
In true Yeezy fashion (i.e., puzzling and overly-dramatic), the 35-year-old rapper cleaned house on Twitter by deleting every one of his tweets on Thursday, save for one that reads "Be Back Soon."
Related: How to Use Kanye's 'Festivalize' In a Sentence
Gone forever are the gems: "I just threw some kazoo on this b***h," "Sometimes I get emotional over fonts," "Classical music is tight yo" and (the classic) "What do I have to do to get a simple persian rug with cherub imagery uuuuugh."
Girlfriend Kim Kardashian's tweets since ("Dolls, don't forget to shop!") lend little explanation to the sudden hiatus.

Well, at least we still have Nicki Minaj to provide some Twitter excitement. Rapper and at times notable tweeter Kanye West has opted to abandon Twitter, at least for a little while. Although maintaining over eight million followers (and, of course, following just one special person—his lady Kim Kardashian), Yeezy's tweets have either been deleted or hidden. Well, except for one, that is. "Be Back Soon," he wrote, in shouty capitals. But where is he going? That question remains unanswered for now.

"If I don't say something in a rap or on Twitter, it's not true," Kanye West told Us Weekly back in April, thus giving his Twitter musings an added stamp of credibility.
So when West tweets, we listen up. And the "Watch the Throne" rapper invariably has a lot on his mind.
Sometimes, he's reminiscing about accompanying his mom to discount fur stores as a child. Sometimes, he's voicing his sartorial pet peeves, such as "button up shirts with hoodies," "khaki trench coats with jeans and off brand work out sneakers" and "big ass striped scarves." Sometimes, he reflects on the nature of profanity. And sometimes, he shares photos flaunting his girlfriend Kim Kardashian's enviable curves.
Needless to say, we were greatly disappointed to discover that West has deleted all of the aforementioned gems from his account, cryptically commenting, "Be Back Soon" (and prompting the question, back from where?...

Maybe Kanye West is trying to create buzz for a new project, like that rumored Cruel Winter album. Maybe he wanted to cede the virtual spotlight to Kim Kardashian, who could really use more attention. Maybe he just realized he could never top “I specifically ordered persian rugs with cherub imagery!!! What do I have to do to get a simple persian rug with cherub imagery uuuuugh.”
Whatever the reason, West has officially deleted every single one of his brilliant, ridiculous tweets — minus an ominous message that simply reads “Be Back Soon.”
It’s not right, but it’s okay.

Whether it was the 99 cent bargain bin VHS tapes at Superstore, or the annual TBS marathon, I have been a huge fan of the James Bond franchise since I was of a young age. Needless to say, when Skyfall was announced I was beyond excited. Daniel Craig is back for round 3, officially having him surpass Timothy Dalton, and eclipse George Lazenby in the 007 mythology.
While Casino Royale breathed new life into the franchise, Quantum of Solace seemed to take it away. With that being said, Skyfall doesn’t seem to be getting the press that I, and many fellow Bond fans, feel it deserves. Finding any news requires a lot of Google searches, and cross referencing (yes a bit of an exaggeration).
With that long winded description out of the way, consider this your one stop shop for all things Skyfall. As news and releases become available, we will be posting them.

Whilst I was asleep last night, the second trailer for The Dark Knight Rises leaked onto the web and was taken down by most sites before I woke up and even knew it was there. So I’ve gone all morning not really knowing about the leaked trailer until I stumbled across my inbox and found a link to it from a reader telling me to watch it immediately before it was gone. He did admit the quality was poor, but that it was a great tease until I could see it for real tomorrow, we think attached to prints of at least Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
I have decided to decline his offer of watching the bad quality trailer, what with us being so close to it actually being available in theatres (and probably online in full HQ quality by Monday) but I imagine a lot of...

Maurizio Cattelan: All Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Through January 22, 2012
The ironic thing about blasphemy is that, in order for there to be any cathartic meaning for the blasphemer, he must first believe in the subject or object he is debasing. Like, really believe in it. De Sade’s endless accounts of nun rapes and shooting loads into the Eucharist would hold little interest, in their own right, if we were not so intrigued by how devout a believer he truly was. Maurizio Cattelan intrigues us for similar reasons, but to lesser effect. For all his posturing, à la Marcel Duchamp, he constantly returns to themes of a religious nature that belie his crueler intentions. His draped, marble figures suggest both Lazarus and Beuys’s I Like America and America Likes Me (1974). A horse hangs below a hand-lettered sign that reads “Inri” (Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm), a donkey carries a TV set,...

Mark Bessenger Hey horror fans. Remember how we've all been complaining about an array of lifeless horror film remakes and bland horror film concepts? So when something comes along that tries to give us something different, something edgy, we should be out there supporting it, right? ....Well Bite Marks starring Windham Beacham, Benjamin Lutz, David Alanson and Stephen Geoffreys, is that film! Bite Marks deals with a truck driver and a gay couple who must fight off a pack of blood thirsty vampires after their truck breaks down in the middle of a lumber yard and it turns out their cargo is a coffin carrying vamps. What makes Bite Marks different is its humor, the way that its characters develop, the merger of horror/comedy/gay indie film, etc. You're probably saying to yourself though "but that's the gay vampire film?". Gay, straight, black, white, low budget, big budget -...

It seems like a week doesn’t go by now without a big-budget animated film or two arriving at our cinemas, more often than not pimped out in state-of-the-art 3D. A cynic might begin to ask whether studios are crossing the line of artistic expression and simply exploiting our children’s proclivity towards bright visuals and cute characters, while perhaps forsaking important tenets such as a strong story, as is true of two recent outings, live-action-cgi calamity Hop and the shallow Rio. All it has taken to remedy this glut, however, is Winnie the Pooh, a traditional, 2D animation – with a slight CG garnish - that, in the vein of Disney’s solid The Princess and the Frog, virulently rejects much of contemporary animation in favour of something simpler and more refreshing.

Troubled American actor Charlie Sheen was Thursday reveling in the fact that his new Twitter account had attracted some 1.3 million followers in just two days."In all sincerity... Thank you Twitter community for the warm reception & the followers that helped get me to 1M in 24 hours!!!" he said in a tweet posted late Wednesday.By Thursday though the number of his followers had swelled to 1.3 million, who had to be satisfied with a mere 21 tweets, accompanied by a couple of pictures, posted by Sheen on the micro-blogging social network. Most of his messages were not too coherent, although he did ask: "Pardon my absence.... My first concern is my kids... Back soon..!"Sheen, 45, said on Wednesday that police had taken his twin two-year-old sons, Max and Bob, away overnight after his estranged wife expressed concern for their welfare. But Sheen has disputed allegations that his wild lifestyle,...

This week: Who’s really the most powerful gay guy in the world? Is Mark “Money for Nothing” Knopfler homophobic?
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!
Q: Recently, I've been reading about the movie Role/Play starring real-life boyfriends Matthew Montgomery and Steve Callahan and it got me thinking about gay-themed movies in which the gay leads, romantic or otherwise, are portrayed by openly gay actors. So far I've come up with seven other movies: Adam & Steve, Back Soon, Eating Out 3, A Four Letter Word, Long Term Relationship, Save Me, and Shortbus. Are there any others out there? -- Aaron, Chicago
A: There are surprisingly few.
Generally speaking, the lower the budget, the more likely the actors are to be gay and out. Why? Well, not to be unkind to some very talented indie actors,...

Greetings, Fred followers. My name is Jason Lenzi, and I do lots of stuff.
“You’re who and you do what?”, I hear you asking already. “And where’s the review of ‘Letters to Juliet’ I was looking for?”. Well, it just so happens, that I was invited to be here, by none other than Ken Plume. And I happen to think that’s pretty, pretty cool. So, ya know, um, leave me alone.
Let me back up a bit, and explain everything. I make my living doing all sorts of things, some of which I can’t go into here for tax reasons. But mainly I work in the entertainment world, as a freelance producer/writer/what-have-you for television. And I work as a voice over artist, narrating shows, doing radio commercials, some animation, etc. It’s nice work, if you can get it, and finally...

There’s really something of a holiday movie curse, isn’t there? Hundreds of Christmas movies have been made over the years, but most are terrible. You can count the number of decent ones on one hand.
I’d love to be able to say that Make the Yuletide Gay, the latest film from gay indie writer-director Rob Williams (Long-Term Relationship, Back Soon), breaks the holiday movie curse.
It doesn’t.
I feel like I have a lump of coal in my heart writing a negative review of this sweet, simple gay-themed holiday comedy. But it’s just not a very good movie.
Gunn, a young gay college student who is totally out on campus, still hasn’t come out to his parents. On the way home for the Christmas holidays, he stops at a public restroom to “de-gay” himself, changing his clothes and messing up his hair (but disappointing...

Q: I´ve been reading the Kathy Griffin book and while it was much less fun than I was hoping for, there was something that really annoyed me -- besides the fact that in her world "the gays" is a synonym for hair dresser or shopping buddy. Kinda makes me wish she´d actually let me at her hair to change that attitude. Anyway, in the book she says that Andy Dick got punched in the face by Wesley Snipes for using (and I quote) "the n-word" in a club. Later there is another Dick story about one of his stand-up appearances where he called the audience repeatedly (and I quote again) "faggots.” So why isn´t it "the n-word" and "the f-word" Or "nigger" and "faggot"? -- Thomas,...

If his career keeps moving in the same direction, Matthew Montgomery may end up being the gay Parker Posey. Having played leads in at least seven independent features in just five years, plus another handful of supporting roles, he has established his indie street cred at a time when gay cinema seems to be exploding. Fans of gay cinema will probably remember Montgomery from Gone, But Not Forgotten, Long-term Relationship and the supernatural-tinged Back Soon.
Getting his start in Reign Of The Dead, a living dead short lensed in and around “Zombie Ground Zero,” Pittsburgh, he’s made his way up the indie food chain and appeared in other genre films, including Socket (which I wrote and directed, natch), Fear House and the upcoming Pornography.
But Montgomery isn’t just an actor in horror and sci-fi flicks; he’s a fan of them as well. A professed sci-fi nerd, Montogmery...

Rome -- "Parque Via," a drama from Mexican director Enrique Rivero, won the top prize at the 61st Locarno Film Festival, where threatening weather over much of the 11 days prevented the event from surpassing last year's attendance record.
Organizers said the festival attracted a total of 180,000 visitors, a 3% drop compared with last year's levels, mostly because of a 5% drop in attendance at the festival's picturesque outdoor venue the Piazza Grande, where only four of 11 screenings took place under clear skies.
The festival did report record-breaking business for its industry office, where five of 18 in-competition films signed international distribution deals.
"Parque Via," one of only four non-world premieres in the lineup, has been a success in every festival it has screened; the film previously won two awards in February at the Mexico City Film Festival. It is the first Mexican film to win Locarno's prestigious Golden Leopard Award.
It capped a noteworthy festival for Latin American film, which was the focus of Locarno's Open Doors sidebar.
Locarno's jury prize went to "33 Scenes From Life," a Germany-Poland co-production from Malgoska Szumowska. Denis Cote won the best director prize for "Elle veut le chaos." Tayanc Ayaydin ("The Market -- A Tale of Trade") and Illaria Occhini ("Mar Nero") won the best actor and actress awards, respectively.
