  • If you liked the movie Barnyard like i did, you are not gonna like the series better. the series is basically a diversion of the movie, and is basically about the barn animals' efforts to cope with their barn lives. this is not one of nick's best shows. it's no much compared to the earlier shows on nickelodeon like fairly odd parents and spongebob squarepants.

Back at the barnyard is an okay show, it's not gonna stand out like the other shows did and it might be canceled after a couple of more seasons, but since it's intended for 6-10 year olds, it'll be somewhat amusing to them.

Some of the reviews, down here, are totally retarded. I didn't know that stupid people have the right to write reviews on this site.

Anyway, if any of you, smart guys, start to watch this cartoon, you will find out, eventually, that this TV series is very interesting, promising and adorable at some point. Personally, i watched it all in my language, and i loved it. It has great humour, smart plot, and amazing lines.

However, I gave a 7 out of 10, for 3 reasons, and it surprises me that no one mentioned them.

    1. It passes some feminist messages: They make the female characters look stronger and way smarter than male characters. Watch Abby and Bessy for example. Otis looks like a stupid, weak, and helpless little cow in contrast with them. Also, Abby can lift weight, but the pig can't. WTF? Who wrote the script? A woman?

    2. Bessy insults everyone for no reason, and especially the male characters, and acts like she doesn't give a fk. That's what a man would do, and it's completely disgusting and inappropriate if a woman does that. IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT! Once again, did a woman write the script?

    3. Vegeterian crap. In an episode, they make Freddy admit to be vegan, even though he really isn't. He admits he doesn't want to eat his best friend, Peck the chicken, even though he tried many times to eat him in a lot of episodes. The animals are not dumb like human beings. They eat their prays, and they don't go against the food chain, like humans. If they are carnivorous, like humans, they eat meat. If they are vegetarians, they don't. They can't be both, and they can't change their way of life and nature. So, it's twisted and weird, by nature, to watch a carnivores animal go vegan like in this show. Once again, animals are not dumb like humans.

I have to say, though, that this cartoon is made mostly for young ages, even though most of their lines and plot are appropriate for all ages, cause they are funny, smart, and amazing, if you leave Bessy and Abby (in some cases) aside, of course.

There's not much to say about it other than it's very meh. The movie it was based on was meh and the same can be said about this show. Both weren't award worthy but they were entertaining nonetheless. Personally I like it because it's not the greatest cartoon but the animation is passable and some of the jokes do hit.

The show's basically about the misadventures of Otis and friends have on a daily basis. One thing that's strange is that Otis' a male yet has an udder. As for Abby (who's a new character voiced by Leigh-Allyn Baker) it's never explained why or how she came at all.

Only a handful of the cast from the film return. Probably the best example was Kevin James' absence. Otis' instead voiced by Chris Hardwick whom I think does a good job portraying the party animal. Wanda Sykes, Rob Paulson, Tino Insana, Jeff Garcia and a few others reprise their roles. The episodes don't break new ground but it's still funny to see the gags and the jokes they tell. There's a little bit of gross out humor which may be off putting to some.

The show only had 2 seasons and it's not hard to see why. The animation's not bad but it's not great. Some of the textures look off which makes some of the characters look hideous. I notice in the second season there're a few changes in the characters: There're more pop culture references in many of the episodes starting with the title, some of the characters such as Duke are less visible and their personality's reduced. Duke for example originally wanted to succeed Otis as the leader of the barn animals in the first season but this was completely removed, Bessie's shown more of an emotional side than the previous season and in some cases gets her share of punishment by the other characters. Unlike the first season where most of the setting took place on and around the barn, season 2 expands their adventures to the city and even the mountains they live near in one episode where they were visiting Bigfoot.

The characters are funny and likable though they're also stupid. Otis' the leader of the group and he's not good at his job. To be fair he does keep the animals from being seen by humans such as their paranoid nosy neighbor Mrs. Beady who's dedicated to exposing their existence but a lot of his antics and selfishness lead to several close calls. His best friend is a feisty mexican mouse named Pip who has a crush on Bessie who's feelings she doesn't reciprocate. His other friends are the nice but gluttonous and dimwitted Pig, the paranoid, unstable ferret who's a vegetarian named Freddie, a smart yet meek, unlucky rooster named Peck and the new cow Abby, a tomboy with a southern accent whom he has his crush on though neither's willing to admit their true feelings for each other. Secondary characters are the farmers dog named Duke who's obsessed with being the new leader of the barn, the Jersey Cows obsessed with pulling pranks on people and the Farmer himself named Buyer who's a feeble old man oblivious to what really goes on his farm.

As far as stories go, they're pretty good. Not great but they held my attention and I laughed a few times at the jokes they threw. I also noticed in the second season that there's a lot more cutaway gags. The chemistry between the characters are pretty good and lead to some funny jokes. A good example's when in one episode where Otis, Duke, and the gang rush to stop his sister's wedding due to her marrying his rival Baxter who's a conman. In one scene where they throw a party to lure Baxter into a trap by installing a couch in hopes of him chewing it up to ruin his reputation only for Duke to chew it up instead while Pip snaps photos of him. The next day when they're looking at the photos Pip tries to make light of it by saying "At least I got his good side". An annoyed Otis responds by sarcastically saying that he's not helping.

Overall it's not a bad show, it's just meh. There's a few jokes that're funny and it's not all bad. I will say this, the way they fought back against Nick and the Network was hilarious. If you want something stupid to watch or have little kids you'll get it here.
  • I have an 8 yr old son whose TV viewing I monitor closely. I had never seen the movie version of "Back at the Barnyard", but having grown up on a Dairy Farm in WI, I thought the premise was cute and could see no harm in watching an episode with him, figuring it would be fine for him to watch.

I agree that the subject matter tends to be fine and the cartoon is harmless for him to watch, but I can't get past the fact that Otis has a male voice and female parts!!!!! Does nobody realize or care that steers &/or bulls (boys) DO NOT have udders?!!!!!! Cows (girls) have udders.

I realize that as a cartoon for kids this doesn't matter much, but it just irks me that we have become such a lazy viewing audience that we don't hold the creators of this cartoon to a little higher standards. Are we teaching our kids to be sloppy by not requiring minor things like the difference between boys and girls to be portrayed correctly?

I loved "Barnyard: The Original Party Animals" when it first came out. It was a funny and cute movie with action and a lesson for kids who were too selfish to be responsible, "A strong man stands up for himself, a stronger man stands up for others." That obviously meant for you to look out for your friends instead of thinking of yourself. When you turn such a great movie into a television show, what could possibly go wrong? "Back at the Barnyard" is your pitiful answer.

This show is so insipid and dumb, it makes Homer Simpson look smart. There is hardly any mention of Otis' lost father or Daisy and her calf, Ben. Most of the episodes consist, (I have seen a few), of the animals being stupid and messing around with the humans. We saw that once in the original film, Nickelodeon, why would you wanna make us see it again? One of the characters, Nora Beady, is a big example of "Back at the Barnyard's" cheesy and pointless jokes. I will admit that she was funny in "The Original Party Animals," but in this cartoon, she is so obsessed with trying to prove that Otis and his friends aren't normal, that it's just plain ridiculous.

And, might I point out, what is the purpose of Abby's character? She was never in the film, so why did they replace Daisy with her? It's completely useless and deserves an explanation.

Overall, "Back at the Barnyard" is a worthless cartoon that does nothing, but become terrible in every way possible. In my mind, there is only one "Barnyard," and that's the movie. All I have to say about this poor excuse for a cartoon is, thank goodness it is now gone.
  • Back at the Barnyard is an amazing anime that has changed my life. The characters, stories, and plot are all amazing. I especially liked the arc of Pip's back story.

This is without a doubt the best anime I have ever watched. It has cured my stage IV crippling depression and has also brought hope and meaning to my life. A must anime for everyone!
  • This was one of the most poorly written cartoons of all time

    The plot made no sense

The soundtrack from that cartoon was stupid

    The Theme Song was Loud

    The voice acting is Terrible

The episodes are lame (there almost like a bad episode of Family Guy or like a bad episode of space goofs)

The characters are dumb and annoying and stupid

And the most annoying character ever was Ottis's sidekick or Friend All Heros and Villains needs sidekicks There a bit useless but smart, cute, amusing and funny, But for pip hes not cute not funny not amusing, hes so stupid And annoying

Freddy and Peck is a lame Rip-Off of Timon&Pumba

Well All the Farm Animals from Back at the Barnyard are a Complete Disgrace to the Animal Kingdom

Eugene "Snotty Boy" Beady is a rip-off of nelson from the Simpson's (i hate that boy,i hate his voice, i hate his laugh and i hate his hair) Hes Worse than Shelby the Turtle from Mickey Mouse Works&House of Mouse

The references from movies and TV shows are useless

This show was terrible,Disgusting, Boring, Not funny at all, and one of the of the worst shows of all time Even Lilo&Stitch the Series is a Better Animated Show based on a Movie than this

and if you Liked that show, then i Respect your Opinion.
  • As with Jimmy Neutron and his many specials, Steve Oedekerk shows true and under-appreciated comic genius. There are few as good as Oedekerk and company for satire in a cartoon vein, from The Right Stuff to Ocean's Eleven and everything in between, it's spot on farce. The characters are likable and truly individual. I would like to see more live action ensemble comedies as good as this, but I don't think the talent is out there (at least, not since Caddyshack.) Watch this. It's good for you, and it's good for your kids. Laughter is the best medicine. The most hilarious aspect are the comments of KillerKlownFromUranus above. He sounds exactly like Snotty Boy from the show, almost as if that repulsive, fat, oily, greasy, ignorant, loud mouthed, cowardly, ugly little pus head actually existed in real life. Life does imitate art, sometimes, doesn't it? If you don't like it, don't watch it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I just noticed the simplest of things in this animated series that there is not one bull or oxen included, so this situation really annoys me and whenever i catch my little brother watching this show it just frustrates me.You are ignoring the simple biology here man ! So Basically we have male and female cows which doesn't even sound right. When i watched the movie for the first time i ignored it but when i caught my brother watching this series it amazed me that no single person thought about it and its just common sense.I mean cows need a bull to reproduce and this whole show seems that a gay person is directing it.
  • My name is Craig Tucker and you should know it. I am making a review on this show which the street name or in which people call it "Back at the Barnyard" to share my deep thoughts and feeling on this show I am reviewing. Obviously you should have known that but since your reading this I guess you didn't so shame on you! I just had to explain that to you and I wasted my time and characters of this review on explaining that to you that so thanks a lot! But anyways now that I wasted my time I guess I can explain why I actually wanted to review this show. So basically what happened was. Anyways that's the end of my review.
  • There are 8 letters to describe this show, H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E. It is not at all funny, and is just stupid. It seems like farm animals and 8 year olds made up this show, because it's really stupid and terrible. It's about animals on a farm that like to party and goof off when the farmer isn't around. Not a good concept, which is why I think an 8 year old is the director. I never, ever laugh at this show, unless I'm laughing for not good reasons because the show is so stupid and boring. You do not want to watch this show, trust me, unless you are stuck with one channel on your TV and this is what's on, and even then I'd just find something to do by myself.

    1/10
  • The Second Steve Oedekerk animated series, 9/10, Otis had an udder

This is a good animated show, It's about the animals on the farm doing stuff when the farmer isn't there, WE KNOW WHAT IT IS

    But it's really good.
  • My original review was mean. Yeah, this show is stupid. The farm animals do stuff when the farmer isn't looking. If you want something that might make you smile, watch the movie. The show has is moments. It has progressed with humor, but still cliché. Personally, I don't like the show or the movie much, but this is something you can watch if there really is "nothing on". Nothing special, that's why it doesn't play much. This isn't a show trying to be nominated for an Oscar, so just sit back and watch. Let loose and enjoy yourself. If you laughed, admit it. Just because the majority of the show may not make you laugh, don't be so negative. Think positve. If you laugh, at least say you did.
  • This cartoon series is one of the zaniest and enjoyable out there. Most shows based on movies tend to be pale imitations, but the writers behind "Back at the Barnyard" series give it a silly yet entertaining life beyond the silver screen. There's lots of pop references (ranging from "The Dark Knight" to "Survivor" to "Star Trek" and humor that the grown-ups can enjoy, and enough oddball fun and jokes that the younger set can laugh at as well. Like a sophisticated sitcom, this show relies heavily on a strong ensemble effort, so it's carried by all major and minor characters. Not every episode is a laugh riot gem, but enough are that it'll grow on you.

My kids and I miss seeing this show but are hoping they'll release all the episodes on DVD soon.
  • AWFUL...

People often diss this show, and I just can't understand what's wrong with it. I'm not going to spend time arguing every point made, I'll just praise it: My little brother watches Nickelodeon, and as far as I can tell it just went down the toilet since the nineties. I used to love Spongebob and the newer episodes I've watched are godawful. So it does my heart good to actually laugh out loud at a new show. Though it's not as thoughtful as older shows, as I've grown my sense of humor has become more immature, and I can understand why people enjoy stupid stuff. My favorite comedy show now is probably Robot Chicken, which goes under fire for the fact that it's dumb. But what did people expect? But I'm not reviewing that. I'm reviewing Barnyard. Barnyard is ridiculous in plot, has mastered the art of "random humor," but still manages to have a decent storyline. It's like if Robot Chicken kept a plot as opposed to brief clips, but for children and not fart jokes (thank god, by the way. I actually hate fart jokes even though I like Robot Chicken, and am sick of all the fart jokes in kid shows). All in all, it hasn't disappointed me yet and I look forward to watching it in the future.
  • gonelunch121 October 2008
OK, this isn't Robot Chicken, but it is well written with spot-on pop references and nicely developed characters. Yes, Otis has an udder. No, I don't know why the "totally vegan" farmer keeps a farmyard full of animals (but it's nice to know my little animated friends are safe). The story lines actually keep me guessing, and the CGI is surprisingly sophisticated, especially for a TV show. Watching this show is a little like going to a Bowling for Soup concert - don't go into it expecting a deeply intellectual experience, just prepare for a terrific party!

Nick's new cartoons have been a mixed bag lately, with some uninspired entries (Tak and the Power of Juju) and some terrible ones (The Mighty B). This show is a welcome reminder of just how good Nick can be.
  • samuelshawel-3848523 December 2020
Compared to the film it was based on, it was a major improvement. Very hilarious moments, such as Pig abruptly interrupting each episode to break the fourth wall in a humorous and charming way. Otis' relationship with Abby the cow is very interesting to watch. Plenty of likable characters, such as the main animals: Otis, Abby, Bessy, Pip, Pig, Freddy, Peck and Duke. The theme song is very catchy. Some endings are either really good or very funny. Very intimidating main antagonists, such as Snotty Boy and Mrs. Beady. Original and creative stories and plots, such as Otis, Freddy and Pig dressing up as girls and ending up dating Snotty Boy and his friends in the episode "Some like it Snotty". Talented voice acting, especially from Wanda Sykes, Tino Insana, Cam Clarke and Rob Paulsen. Great jokes. Intelligent and clever writing.
  • Just last night, I was replying to a thread on the Rockos Modern Life boards about Best and Worst shows on Nickelodean. And I was shocked when there were those who picked this as one of the worst, though not as shocked at how many people picked Avatar:The Last Airbender as one of the worst. Look, Back at the Barnyard is not Nickelodean's best not even close, I would pick Rocko's Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy, Doug and The Angry Beavers over this, but it sure the hell beats ChalkZone, Zoey101 and Rocket Power, and I truly think the gem that was once Spongebob has jumped the shark.

And I will be honest, I think this show is better than the movie. I didn't like the movie really, but despite some predictable moments and some parts where the humour went over my head, Back at the Barnyard isn't bad at all. The animation is colourful and better-modelled this time around, while the music is good too. The writing and humour are random but it is funny, and while the stories have their predictabilities they are at least interesting. The characters are much more likable this time too, and the voice acting I had little problem with either.

Overall, this isn't really a bad show. Not outstanding, but better than people make it out to be. 8/10 Bethany Cox
  • No doubt - as far as I'm concerned this series is in Top 10 of the best cartoon series I have ever seen, it is so funny and the plot is excellent, the characters tear from laughter to tears. It's such a shame that it ended with only 52 episodes, in my opinion it had huge potential. Maybe it's just for me, but the kind of humor in the series is exactly my kind of humor, so I became very attached to it. There is no doubt that today in 2017 I can say that she is even nostalgic, compared to the film I saw and he was nice but no more in relation to the series. Otis, Abby, Peck, Freddy pig,Dukas-they're all just great characters and they tearing from laughter to tears. We want more, so bad that the series ended in chapter 52 only. rate - 9
  • Warning: Spoilers
For one, I don't get why people hate this show. I mean, it's average at the least and fantastic at the most. Just, what is so bad about this show? Because the show does a lot of things right.

For one, let me talk about the animation. It's very nice CGI that doesn't feel like a cheap downgrade from the movie. The characters are always moving, the settings are nicely detailed, I can actually believe this to be a TRUE Nickelodeon universe, unlike the OTHER shows I mentioned.

The characters are also pretty good. Otis, the main character, is very curious, crazy, sometimes selfish, and very likable. One nitpick I have with Otis is that his personality seems to fluctuate throughout the show. In certain episodes, Otis is dumb, blind, selfish, and crazily fun. Yet in others, he's fun, smart, energetic, and clever. It's just jarring...

Pip is a nice character also. He has the right amount of energy, the right amount of intelligence, and the perfect voice to match!

Pig is Patrick Star. The only difference is that Pig is more caring, smart, and dirty compared to Patrick. Personally, I'd say he's either gonna really make you laugh, or will tick you off.

Freddy and Peck are the usual, One-Friend-Wants-To-Eat-The- Other scenario. Although it's actually justified because Freddy is a carnivore, and at times he tries to resist eating Peck, but gives into his cravings. Peck is the smart, talkative one, who always gets abused. Although, unlike Squidward, Peck's abuse is funny. For example, in certain episodes, a random meteorite crushes Peck for no reason. And in others, people call him out for being too smart. Freddy is hilarious, yet disturbing in CERTAIN episodes... Anyways, I love these two, they are a comical duo done right.

A new character was added to the show called Abby, most likely to replace Daisy from the movie. She's basically Sandy Cheeks, although a bit more wilder and brave. In one episode, (paired with Anchor Cow) Abby was shown simply beating up all the males and they were acting like prissies. Personally, I hate episodes like that. I know about the whole female empowerment thing. But most times, they screw it up by making females stronger than ALL males, rather than gender equality. Anyways, back to Abby. She's a pretty fun character that has motivations for what she does, and sometimes feels left out by all the males. Her voice is the only thing I can't tolerate. It's just too high pitched! But at least it fits her character.

Bessie is the typical, 'Black-Woman-is-Ghetto' character. And am I the only person sick and tired of people assuming all Blacks are ghetto and only like rap. Because it's not true! Bessie... I like her. Despite her being the stereotypical Black woman, it fits her character. She's very sassy and intelligent and loves to insult people. In fact, in one episode (can't recall), there is a montage of her insulting people, and ending with a funny as heck line! So basically, Bessie is a very good character with funny lines.

The TRUE antagonist of the show is Mrs. Nora Beady. Frankly, I don't get her motivations for trying to expose the talking animals. It's probably revealed in Barnyard, but I can't remember. Anyways, I like this character a lot. Her voice is perfect, her plans are for the most part logical (something rare these days), and she has very funny moments that makes her fun to watch. One of my favorite Nickelodeon villains. Up there with Plankton, Technus, Vlad, Professor C., and Crocker!

If I had to pick 10 episodes I'd recommend you watch first, here they are (not a top 10): 1. Escape from the Barnyard 2. Saving Mrs. Beady 3. The Farmer Takes a Wife 4. Fowl Play 5. Dummy and Dummier 6. Cowman: The Uddered Avenger 7. Happy Animal Fun Time 8. Kids in the City 9. Barnyards and Broomsticks 10. Treasure Hunt

The humor isn't centered around toilets and butts, unlike those OTHER shows! It's more natural humor, like something you'd find in SpongeBob. For example, one joke in Mission: Saving Bigfoot, has Otis stuffing Pip into Pig's armpit to keep him warm from the subzero temperatures, as Pip was about to freeze to death. The only thing Pig says is, "That tickles." No disgusting close-ups of his armpit, or Pip saying it smells bad and making gagging noises. The joke continues on throughout the rest of the episode, but it's brief and is not disgusting as say, 'Fart Baby' from Sanjay and Death. If you want a laugh, then this is a good show. Most episodes are parodies such as Fowl Play being a parody of Child's Play. They usually get the parody right and that's basically the structure of the show.

While not as good as say Kenan & Kel, Fairly Oddparents (pre-2007), and SpongeBob, Back at the Barnyard is a fun show for kids. THIS is a show your kids should be watching. Not simple toilet humor. Not twerking poorly-animated ducks. THIS!

At the same time I would've wanted the show to continue, I'm glad it ended. I wanted a third season, and was saddened when the series finale aired. But as of the network now, I'm happy. Because Nickelodeon may have simply put nothing but premature jokes and toilet humor into the show, or would've canceled it/move it to online like they did Korra. So Back at the Barnyard, I'm sorry that you ended, but it was for the better. Be glad you don't have to suffer the same fate as the new shows on Nickelodeon.

I used to watch this show when I was little and just like Invader Zim, I loved this show. Looking back on it the show is still pretty good. The only criticism I can give is Otis and the other male cows having an udder. Aside from that, I love this show.
  • If you know anything about Nickelodeon, you should know how much they love SpongeBob, cancelling other show before they even give them a chance. They were good shows, but there was one show that was PHENOMENAL. It was called, "Back at the barnyard".

This show's origin goes back to 2006. There was this movie called barnyard. The movie had the characters from the show fighting off coyotes that killed the leader of the barnyard. The movie was a bomb, but it managed to spawn a show, this show was in a different tone than the movie, fancying slapstick humor over a coming-of-age story. On paper, this shouldn't have worked, but I'm so glad it did.

The show follows the adventures of Otis the bull and his friends. These adventures range from building a sphinx and babysitting a clam to shooting milk at aliens and throwing a birthday for their farmer. What My favorite part is about this series is that you'll never know what's going to happen next. One moment could be having the characters making a bucket of glue, the next they're getting that glue back so it doesn't explode all over the place. We need more shows like that with random humor!

Back at the barnyard is A MASTERPIECE! I'm so sad it only got two seasons, but that's probably a good thing because it wouldn't go into seasonal rot, unlike *cough* SpongeBob *cough*
