Several months ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to write and direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Gyllenhaal has assembled a strong cast for the film that includes Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, and Julianne Hough, with Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster. Now Deadline reports that John Magaro (Past Lives) and Jeannie Berlin (You Hurt My Feelings) are also in the cast, but no details have been revealed about the characters they’re playing.

From Freddy Krueger to Annie Wilkes, iconic villains with memorable backstories are a hallmark of popular horror media, but there’s more than one way to terrify audiences. For example, some horror flicks task viewers with unmasking the mysterious antagonist alongside our main characters in scare-centric whodunit mashups.
And with the continued success of the Scream franchise proving that audiences are hungry for more mystery alongside the traditional blood and guts, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six lesser-known whodunit horror flicks for your viewing pleasure.
Since this list is meant to highlight underseen scary movies, we won’t be including more popular whodunits like the original Friday the 13th, Happy Death Day or any of the aforementioned Scream films. However, feel free to comment below with your own favorite whodunit horror flicks if you think we missed a particularly underrated one.

There are few names as synonymous with horror as Wes Craven's. This is the man who gifted us "A Nightmare on Elm Street," which gave us one of horror's all-time slasher villains in the form of Freddy Kreuger. He's also the man who, when it was all but dead, saved the slasher genre in remarkable fashion with the meta "Scream" in 1996. For as much as "Elm Street" was his calling card, it's easy to argue now that "Scream" is his greatest legacy. To that end, it's perhaps fitting that Craven's final movie (even if that wasn't the plan) was 2011's "Scream 4."

Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.
HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

Like many children growing up in the 1960s, Kenneth Hall loved monsters. Ever since he was a toddler, his mother — who was an especially big fan of Vincent Price — took him and his brother to see films like The Brides Of Dracula, Curse Of The Werewolf, and The Pit And The Pendulum. And that was all it took. At age 10, Hall discovered Famous Monsters of Filmland, and with the help of the trusty TV Guide, he and his brother made a point to watch as many of the films they read about as they could, even if it meant sneaking out of bed and staying up late to catch a showing of The Deadly Mantis. Like many Monster Kids of his time, there was a now-or-never mentality that came with a lack of home video, but growing up in Jacksonville, Fl did give Hall an extra advantage. It was the...

Usually when someone famous passes away, I write a little thing on Twitter and Facebook, giving a little insight as to why they meant something to me. Be it a film that connected with me, a song that helped me through something tough, a book that I devoured multiple times and a piece or artwork that I could look at until the end of time, always seeing something new. But when it comes to someone like Wes Craven passing away, it feels as if I’m in an awful nightmare and there’s no Dream Warriors to save me and Freddy Krueger isn’t the wisecracking asshole but instead just death himself.
Wes Craven was one of the first filmmakers that I connected with at a young age. Of course, Freddy Krueger was the 80’s and being a child of the 80’s, I connected with slasher movies. Yes, I was...

The three-year run of Hannibal, one of the most visually and narratively innovative series ever to air on television, broadcast or cable, came to a breathtaking conclusion Saturday night. I have already confessed to a bit of selfish melancholy that there will be no more surprises, no more opportunities to get lost in the show’s radical approach to reimagining Thomas Harris’s well-known and well-trodden scenarios, and no more sweet, agonized anticipation over what form the show, probably the most envelope-pushing of any network show ever aired, might take in its own becoming. But I must also confess that I couldn’t be more satisfied with the way Hannibal, all three seasons now fully unveiled, was orchestrated to a beautifully modulated finish that illustrated the truly expressive and even transcendent (of the limitations of a more audience-friendly, more comfortingly linear structure and tone) achievement of Bryan Fuller’s series.

It was hard to see writer/director Wes Craven, who died yesterday at the age of 76 after a battle with brain cancer, in person without experiencing a sense of cognitive dissonance. A dignified man with an academic air, kind eyes, and an easy smile, Craven defied the expectations created by his films, which sent character after character to their deaths, usually in imaginative — and always brutal — ways. Could the man expanding on the cultural roots of horror be the same man who turned Johnny Depp into geyser of blood in A Nightmare on Elm Street?...

I don’t often get time to read a lot of books these days, but I knew that Joseph Maddrey had a couple of genre-related titles coming out and I needed to make the time. A few years ago, Maddrey teamed up with iconic actor Lance Henriksen for the wonderfully engaging Not Bad for a Human, and Maddrey’s latest literary efforts- Beyond Fear and A Strange Idea of Entertainment-are both equally informative and compelling reads for any horror fan.
Beyond Fear: Reflections on Stephen King, Wes Craven and George Romero’s Living Dead focuses on Maddrey’s analysis and reflections on three of our genre’s most influential storytellers and how their visions uniquely shaped the landscape of horror entertainment over the last several decades. Considering we live in a world where we seem to have a documentary about practically every possible subject out there now, there’s actually...

Sarah argues that MTV's Scream TV pilot could be a great addition to the franchise...
There are lots of reasons to be pessimistic about the proposed Scream TV show. You could see the idea as a cynical cash grab, an attempt to wring the last few dollars out of the franchise after Scream 4 failed to do as well as its predecessors at the box office. You might wonder why you’d bother taking a recognisable brand name and applying it to what sounds like a completely different property anyway. And you might well look at some of Wes Craven’s non-Scream projects over the last decade and wonder if he’s in touch with what a modern horror audience even wants.
But where’s the fun in that? If you’re a horror fan, you’re probably well acquainted with the thrill...

Wes Cravens My Soul to Take was just released three years ago but Im convinced its a story worthy of rebooting inside the next decade or so. Youre probably entirely right in saying whoa Matt youre jumping to some seriously premature conclusions here. You could be right. Im not a stranger to prematurity. However theres reason to give this film a second chance.

Review by Andrew MacArthur of Cinehouse
We should know better than to get excited when a once great horror director makes a back to basics comeback. It’s happened with John Carpenter (The Ward), George A. Romero (Survival of the Dead), Wes Craven (My Soul to Take), and Dario Argento (Dracula 3D), and now it is the turn of Japan’s own Hideo Nakata – the man behind Dark Water and Ringu. In a miraculous feat Nakata has managed to make a film worse than all those aforementioned combined.
The Complex follows a young nursing student (Maeda) who moves with her family into a derelict apartment block, which her friends claim is haunted. After being disturbed by eerie noises coming from her neighbour’s apartment it seems these claims may have some truth.

You won't see our review until tonight when the film premieres, but "Bluebird," the debut feature from first-time filmmaker Lance Edmands is a strikingly good drama and an auspicious beginning for writer/director Lance Edmands. Starring Amy Morton (George Clooney's older sister in "Up In The Air"), "Mad Men" actor John Slattery, Louisa Krause (the bitchy, scene-stealing hotel clerk in "Young Adult"), Emily Meade ("Fringe," "My Soul to Take,") plus co-starring Adam Driver ("Girls") and Margo Martindale, "Bluebird" is a wintry, stark and yet deeply penetrating and mature examination of interconnected lives between two sets of mothers and families. Here's the official synopsis: On a freezing January evening, school bus driver Lesley (Amy Morton) completes her route, but her final inspection abruptly ends when a bluebird comes into view. What happens next shakes her small Maine logging town, proving that even the slightest actions have enormous consequences....

House at the End of the Street has arrived on Blu-ray and DVD Combo pack from 20th Century Fox. I missed the film in theaters, so this was my first viewing. I must say that I am truly glad I saw this film at home. This is one of the most generic horror movies I have seen as of late, and that is saying something. I feel as though I had seen this story before, oh wait I have seen something called The Last House on the Left. Ah, the soundtrack to Wes Craven’s Shocker - truly the B-Sides gift that keeps on giving. It wouldn’t be the most metal 80’s horror movie soundtrack without a hard rockin’ hair band power ballad. Every rose has its thorn; just like every sword had its stone; or something like that.
I can’t say I’m too familiar with the band Bonfire. All these long-haired hard rock bands from the mid-to-late 1980’s blend together after a while. “Sword and Stone” was originally recorded by Kiss for their Crazy Nights album but didn’t make the final cut and now can only be heard as an unreleased demo. The song then got passed on to Bonfire, and having heard both versions, I’d say the Bonfire version is vastly superior.
This power ballad covers Shocker’s romantic aspect. You remember how Peter Berg’s girlfriend gets murdered by Horace...

A key character in the "Hannibal" universe has been cast, and as has been the case with several other roles in the upcoming show, it's being played by yet another alumnus of a previous Bryan Fuller series. Read on for the details.
Per TVLine, Broadway vet Raul Esparza (My Soul to Take) will appear in at least two episodes of NBC’s contemporary Hannibal Lecter series in the key role of Dr. Chilton. The character was originated on the big screen by actor Benjamin Hendrickson in 1986′s Manhunter, and Anthony Heald took over the role of Lecter’s infamous jailer in The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon.
Like the previously announced Caroline Dhavernas, Molly Shannon, Chelan Simons, Ellen Greene, and Gina Torres, Esparza previously worked with exec producer Fuller: He played traveling salesman Alfredo Aldarisio in Fuller’s "Pushing Daisies."

David Chase, creator of The Sopranos and seven-time Emmy winner, makes his directorial debut this year with Not Fade Away, the 1960s-set drama starring the rising young John Magaro (Liberal Arts, My Soul to Take) and Chase’s Sopranos lead, the ever-brilliant James Gandolfini.
The film is the centrepiece of this year’s Nyff, and is set to arrive in theatres this December, which could see it flying under the radar for the coming awards season, and now the first trailer has been released over at Apple.
“It’s 1964. The Rolling Stones appear on television, and three best friends from the suburbs of New Jersey decide to form a rock band.”
Chase is directing from his own script, with Jack Huston, Will Brill, Bella Heathcote, Brad Garrett, and Christopher McDonald supporting alongside Magaro and Gandolfini.
Not Fade Away will be released on 21st December in the Us. No word yet...

Director: Mark Tonderai. Review: Stan Glick. As in business, it’s sometimes the case in the horror/thriller genre that it’s all about “location, location, location.” There’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984, remade in 2010), “Last House on the Left” (2009), and probably others that I can’t think of off-hand. Now joining them is “House at the End of the Street,” a psychological horror/thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence (“Winter’s Bone” and “The Hunger Games,” – as if you had to be told) and Elizabeth Shue (the original 1984 version of “The Karate Kid” and “Leaving Las Vegas”). Both have been Oscar nominees. Lawrence plays Elissa, the high school-aged daughter of divorced mother Sarah (Shue). The two have just moved from Chicago to a beautiful, huge house adjacent to a state park in Pennsylvania. Sarah, who has a job at the local hospital, can afford to rent it because a tragedy...

Max Thieriot is not even 24 years old but has already worked with notable directors like Doug Liman, Atom Egoyan, Wes Craven and Nick Cassavetes. Thieriot made his big-screen debut in 2004's "Catch That Kid" opposite Kristen Stewart, with whom he remains close friends. You might recognize him as the younger version of Hayden Christensen's character in "Jumper" and for roles in movies like the horror film "My Soul to Take" and the psychosexual drama "Chloe."
In the thriller "House at the End of the Street," Thieriot plays a young man, Ryan, who lives in said house where both of his parents were brutally murdered. This has rendered him an outcast in the small community, but that doesn’t seem to bother Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence), who's moved in down the street with her overprotective mother (Elisabeth Shue) and who feels connected to Ryan. Is he really a nice guy who...

Jennifer Lawrence returns to the big screen in House at the End of the Street this Friday, a nice pre-Halloween horror/thriller to prep us for the coming fright fest next month.
Her next feature, Silver Linings Playbook, took the People’s Choice Award at Tiff at the weekend, marking yet another brilliant role from the increasingly rising and diverse star.
We got a look inside the special effects of the film earlier in the month, and now three new clips from the film have debuted online, including one of Lawrence singing from Yahoo Movies, giving us a little taste of the thrills we have in store.

A small slice of news we missed last week concerning Bates Motel - A&E's Psycho prequel television series - is that Max Thieriot was cast to co-star as Norman Bates' brother, Dylan, a character we exclusively talked about in our 10 Things We Know About Bates Motel piece.
Thieriot, who previously starred in Wes Craven's My Soul To Take, is currently making the press rounds discussing this Friday's release, House at the End of the Street.
Regarding Bates Motel, he told the press during a junket today, "It kind of came up quick and out of the blue, but it's exciting. I'm leaving for Vancouver on the 24th to start that. There are a lot of great people attached to that."

An interesting new promo vid has been revealed by Relativity Media ahead of this Friday's theatrical release of Mark Tonderai's new thriller 'The House at the End of the Street'. It seemingly appears in a music video style with sexy star Jennifer Lawrence -below ('The Hunger Games', 'X-Men: First Class') singing 'All You've Got to Do is Fall in Love' whilst strumming her instrument. It then soon notches up a gear and into a more recognisable horror/thriller styled trailer with the echoes of Lawrence's tones still reverberating throughout. Elisabeth Shue ('Piranha 3-D'), Max Thieriot ('My Soul to Take'), Nolan Gerard Funk, Gil Bellows, Krista Bridges, Allie MacDonald and James Thomas all co-star in the flick hitting cinemas on Friday....
