this is a really good TV series about a young vampire who doesn't really want to be a vampire, his closest friend is a breather (human), it is aimed at children and teenagers but due to its layered story lines it can also appeal to adults, the BBC have however stopped making the series and have left series 2 on a huge cliffhanger, if you agree that there should be a series 3 sign the petition the link is at the end of this comment there are already over 3500 people who have signed, i really hope they make a 3rd series and that we get to find out what happens with Vlad there is an endless number of possibilities on how they could end that series. http://www.petitiononline.com/yds30108/

    *SPOILERS FOR ALL SEASONS*

Season 1: There's not much to say about the first season. When I was younger, I enjoyed it immensely and would constantly watch repeats. Obviously, as I watch it now, I don't enjoy it as much as I do the other seasons because it is more aimed at young children rather than teens. I'd say that, if you were to watch this, you should skip season one altogether but would leave you heavily confused whilst watching season two. So, if you can, power through it. There's some humour there that still grabs a laugh out of me and might do with you, as well.

Season 2: This is where it gets more interesting, especially near the end. The show becomes less kid-like whilst growing up with the viewers. It's still safe for younger children but suitable for older ones, as well.

Season 3: And, like I said before, this season is interesting but far more exciting than the last one. It's not just about Vlad (Gerran Howell) wanting to be a Breather and eat cornflakes. It's about him facing his fears, his blood-mirror self, his destiny as The Chosen One. There is also a love interest called Erin (Sydney Rae White) who doesn't just sit around and follow Vlad. The Van Helsings are back, sadly, without Eric (Terence Maynard). Gerran Howell gives off a more convincing performance that clicks in perfectly with the admirable act from Keith Lee Castle (The Count) and the passionate determination of Ingrid, played by Claire Lucy Thomas.

Season 4: This season is my favourite. It is chock-full of different ideas and story lines that grasp your attention and leave you wanting more. It introduces a new character, Malik (Richard Southgate) who is just as convincing the rest of the cast and Sydney Rae White gives a brilliant showing when given Erin's new character development, going from sweet and kind to evil and manipulative. Although exciting, the show also gives off a flurry of different mood settings. It doesn't try and try and try with these scenes. They are subtle and well-done in so many ways. But, episode 11, The Breather Farm, surprised me. It was a good episode, much like the rest but its horror-movie-likeness was baffling. It shocked me that a, as called by the cast and producers of the show, 'kids show' would actually produce this. It didn't bother me as much as it would younger ones but, I have to say, I found it confusing as Claire Lucy Thomas' said on her Tumblr that they decided not to make the blood they drink too life-like, as it might be 'too scary' for audiences.

Season 5: This... This is where the show flops. After 3 fantastic seasons, this happens. A lot of character traits are crushed. For example, Ingrid, throughout the entire show, is fighting against the forces of Vampiric sexism but is unable to get what she wants. You expect a major breakthrough in this last season with her winning and changing Vampiric Law and actually getting what she wants. Instead, she doesn't. Not at all. She gets to co-own Garside (with the help of a man) but that's it. She doesn't really accomplish anything. What a waste of five seasons of complaining.

The Count becomes a wimp. Not slightly, like he was in all the previous seasons. He was scary, threatening, bold and prideful. Sure, like I said, he was wimpish at times but was almost always accepting to go into battle. In season five, this vanishes. He just becomes full-on-wimp and it's sad to see his character end like that.

Now we come to Vlad. When I heard S5 was coming out, I expected Vlad to have fulfilled his destiny in becoming the all-powerful Chosen One. I expected him to be a fearsome warrior who has gained all his powers and helps lead Vampires and Slayers into peace. Instead, he became some sort of 'zen master' and this was painfully disappointing to see. I did not expect his personality to morph into this and thought it was stupid that they had taken this route. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Last but not least, let's talk about the plots. The half-Breather, half-Vampire idea was great. I'll admit, I'd always had a sneaky suspicion that that was going to be the outcome and was pleased to see it turn that way. But, a lot of the other stuff doesn't seem to last. In the beginning of the episode, you'd have something come up, the characters panic and try to figure out how to solve it and by the time the episode ends, they overcome the situation and forget all about it. Ingrid plotting to kill Vlad became very old, considering that she had been doing it for four seasons and showed compassion to her Brother at the end of season four. The Count being cruel to his Daughter was also getting old and I wish those two debacles didn't exist in the final season. Tabitha was just there as a love interest and hardly contributed to the programme. And the 'final boss', if you want to call it that, are the Sons of Ramanga, which I also found weak and bit repetitive. In my opinion, they should've saved Sethius for the very end of this show. His plan for anarchy would've been good as a finale and to experience something so action-packed would've been amazing.

All in all, I give this 8/10. I highly recommend this programme and think it's one of CBBC's best.
  • This is a really wild and wacky, OK its on kids TV but it is brill. I got around to watching it when I was ill but now I just have to record it each week. The cast is all really good from the kid actors to the adults, definitely including the 600 year old Count (who is pretty damn yummy). But the whole thing is just so great to watch …and its funny. Really nice characterisation by the actors all in all it's more or less perfect, apart from when they show it…Thursdays at 5pm

BBC is putting out some good stuff at the moment and some absolute dross but why the heck doesn't this sort of quality get some sort of push into the schedule or at least some mention have they ever heard of cult following?

This show is a great example of a low-budget success. It has great writing and the delivery of lines by the actors is priceless. The story revolves around the son of Count Dracula. His name is Vlad. He has a sister(Ingrid) and they must integrate into human society with Vlad and Ingrid going to a regular school. Van Helsing is a teacher at the school and tries to expose the Count at all costs. Vlad does not want to become a vampire but his sister is deeply into her family heritage. Unfortunately for her tradition dictates Vlad will take over the family one day. Count Dracula is one of the main reasons to watch this show. To see him in his naturally evil surroundings and trying to raise his kids is brilliant. Not to mention parent/teacher meetings. This show is great fun and it goes to show you don't need a massive budget to pull off great television viewing.

    Seasons 1 & 5

I added this comment because I was surprised no one else has mentioned this yet on IMDb -- or maybe I missed it.

I really enjoyed seasons 2, 3 & 4. Season 1 was too "kiddie" and season 5 was really disappointing. The writers had clearly run out of ideas after the good ending to season 4.

In the last season, they kept coming up with more and more over-the-top problems and issues that were inconsistent with the canon established earlier in the show.

I was most annoyed by two things: the improbable plot points and the lame way they portrayed the Count as the show progressed. He went from being a sometimes humorous, yet powerful, figure to a cowardly oaf on par with Renfield. I just don't get how the the importance of that character was dismissed over time, even if the show's focus was on Vlad.

Same thing with Ingrid. The opportunity to slowly develop her character in interesting ways was squandered. They regularly referenced sexism but never really addressed it. She *kinda* gets what she wants at the end but still at the behest of a man, and not even a vampire. That was ridiculous.

In so many instances Vlad's development simply didn't make sense.

The main characters were performed very well by the actors. Keith-Lee Castle was exceptional as the Count (even though his comedic talents were severely abused), Simon Ludders was excellent as Renfield. He managed to make sense of a character who wasn't very clear in the show. (e.g. How is he a complete idiot and a exceptional genius at everything?) The younger actors, Gerran Howell and Clare Thomas were great and really grew into their roles despite the inconsistencies in the writing.

If you haven't watched the show yet, I'd recommend "powering through"season one (if you're older, it's fine for kids) and watch to the end of season 4. *Skip the last season.* You'll just get frustrated. They jump so many sharks, they should re-title it: "Young Seaworld."

I'd love to see the series get another pass though. This might be one of the *few* instances where an American remake my do it some good but only if it's on par with say, the US remake of House of Cards. We need some good young vamp stories on screen.

(And yes, despite the deep flaws, still better than Twilight. lol)
  • The first three seasons are a campy and fun family-friendly comedy similar to American TV series' The Munsters and The Addams Family. The show is enjoyable if it is not taken seriously. There are silly plots and odd camera angles.

After a short hiatus, the show returned in season four with a much darker and serious approach. The cast of supporting characters got much more intriguing in the final two seasons. Which approach is better depends on one's personal preference, but both are well done.

One thing all five seasons have in common is the unfortunate sexist approach to female characters, especially Clare Thomas's Ingrid. She is constantly denigrated specifically for being "a girl." This might have started off as a running joke, but it became a primary theme of the show.

This has nothing to do with Bram Stokers novel. Dracula. But nonetheless it is brilliantly devised.

Vlad is the son of Dracula and until his sixteenth birthday he will remain in human form until he called up to become a Vampire. But Vlad has other plans he wishes to remain human....or turn into a good Vampire.

The show itself is brilliant written for a children TV show and I found myself laughing to some of the brilliant one liners and the hilarious adventures of the Van Helsings. The actors are all perfect in their chosen roles, Keith Lee Castle who plays Dracula is captivating as Dracula, he plays the Prince of Darkness with flamboyance and menace.....

Better then any other show the BBC has created.

This show is about Vlad, the son of Dracula. According to it's plot Count D lived on and had two children, Vlad and Ingrid. CD prefers Vlad due to the inheritance system and so encourages him in vampiric ways, but Vlad doesn't want to be weird, he wants to be normal. This is only made worse when Vlad and the family move to a castle- yes, a castle- overlooking an English town and Vlad attends school. Not a bad job, this show, but the vampire jokes do tire a bit after a while. The nemesis of the Draculas are the Van Helsings, vampire slayers. The many possibilities and plots that stem from this situation are used. It is quite an enjoyable show, and one good point is the humour, which is really quite funny. If you added a laughter track it would be a comedy show. The English town is used effectively as a nice backdrop, and isn't overly used to further the irony of the Draculas location away from Transylvania, instead relying on their character. A good show, but those stakes that look like ice cream cones ain't gonna kill nobody.
  • started watching this program because my 10 year old daughter put it on,now its me that watches it and she just ignores it,they are showing repeats on BBC,the new series 4 should start in the autumn.Keith lee castle who plays the count is a really good actor and a dish/eye candy for the mums, and the children in it are excellent,a very good cast and story line.we have been past the locations were it was filmed in series 3 unfortunately not while they were there.hoping they will be showing more locations in series 4 as indicated on you tube.really hoping they will be putting the other 3 series on DVD really soon.i think the show would appeal to a mixed age group.

"Hello, my dear vampires, now I don't care what you want, you will do anything I'll say." "Have you ever heard of free will?" "Die! I AM the chosen one."

"Excuse me, you keep telling about the peace between vampires and people but all you actually do is killing vampires. I have to agree that the world without vampires are some peaceful place for people. But do you remember you are vampires' leader?" "Die! I AM the chosen one."

"I must say I'm sick and tired of leading characters who are not normal but unique: sons of an emperor, semi-gods and especially chosen ones. I mean there are a zillions of them. Boring and cliche. But anyway. So, you are a cruel mad paranoid silly selfish leader. Are you sure you are a protagonist of a tv-show for kids, a tv-show about a brother and a sister who are friends no matter what, who are vampires just to get more watchers to screens?" "Die! I AM the chosen one."

Don't get me wrong, I'm not telling "young Dracula" is a bad tv show. I'm just asking you: is that really the very protagonist you need???

I found this gem on Amazon Prime. I am so happy that I stumbled across it and that Amazon Prime has such interesting cross referencing of people, directors and shows.

Season 1 was good. Good characters, funny lines, great actors and hilarious camera angles. Kids would love this show. My son and I watched the first few episodes. He lost interest and I devoured the rest of the seasons.

Season 2 was great. The actors really came into their own. I knew going in that there were 5 seasons. I think that if I had found this show (and was able to access it in America) in 2006-7 I would have been very sadden for such a long hiatus.

Season 3 does not appoint. Although I got to go from Season 2 finale to Season 3 opener in 2 seconds flat, Season 3 is by far my favorite. Bad Vlad is amazing. It had me laughing the entire time. I know that it wasn't really meant to be so comedic but knowing where they were and seeing Vlad so disturbing was needed in the show.

Season 4 is great and my second favorite. Malik is a fun addition.

Season 5 is a waste of opportunities. The weakness of Vlad and the buffoonery that encompasses the Count is irritating to say the least. When Renfield is your favorite character of the season, you know something went wrong in the writing room. I am glad that everything was tied up in a nice little bow so I don't have to be sad not knowing what happened to the characters.
  • This is on of the only shows I watched as a child which I still rewatch to this day. It's funny, gothic, and campy in a similar way to the Addams family.

One of my early alternative style influences, I'm now 23 and it's one of my favourite vampire shows/films. I have bonded with so many people over the nostalgia of this series.

Great to show to a young alternative/ gothic person. Also a great introduction to the many versions of Dracula as it is so child friendly yet uses characters and names from the bram stokers Dracula .

Highly recommend to anyone young and old. It will be a great show to one day watch with my future children.

a nice comedy series about a too old subject. smart, amusing, reflecting cultural references and using the long tradition about the exotic stranger who looks be the ordinary citizen, it is a pretty entertainment and that virtue is not small. because, in a society who transforms the vampires in a cool trend, this children series represents a kind of oasis , for the fine irony, for the alternative story and for the reflection of the needs and expectations of young Dracula in middle of his strange family. a film adapted to young public with humor and the spirit of old good comedy spirit. and that fact is the good point. short, a real good series.for entire family, about a classic theme in new terms, with a clever script and good acting.
