Wes Anderson’s latest endeavor Asteroid City is making its crash-landing into theaters this Friday, June 23rd, and it has a fitting soundtrack to match. As a preview, Jarvis Cocker has shared one of his contributions to the film called “Dear Alien (Who Art In Heaven),” a single he wrote with Anderson and his former Pulp bandmate Richard Hawley. The song also features Seu Jorge, who was prominently featured on the soundtrack for Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
Considering Asteroid City takes place in a desert town in 1955, the soundtrack comes chock-full of period-setting tunes like classic bluegrass and country as well as mid-century pop. Along with a couple of originals from Cocker are songs by Bing Crosby, The Springfields (featuring a young Dusty Springfield), Burl Ives, Tex Ritter, and many more, as well as a score by Alexandre Desplat.

It’s a great time for Chinese cinema with homegrown productions dominating the local box office.
Action thriller “Operation Mekong” won the box office charts with $77 million in sales during the national weeklong holiday, according to the film industry-consulting firm Artisan Gateway.
In the second spot was Yibai Zhang’s romantic comedy “I Belonged to You”. Stop motion film “L.O.R.D.: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties” by Jingming Guo placed Number 3 in the box office. Jing Wong’s action comedy “Mission Milano” followed in fourth place. “The Wild Life” is the only non-Chinese movie that made the top five.
Operation Mekong conquered all these films thanks to its nationalistic theme and its action guru director Dante Lam of “Beast Stalker” and “That Demon Within” fame.
La Times praised the filmmaker saying “(Dante) Lam packs the movie with white-knuckle action sequences, set in eye-catching locations, teeming with extras.”

Director Feng Xiaogang (The Banquet, Assembly, Back To 1942) steps in front of the cameras to play the lead role in Guan Hu's Mr. Six, which has been selected as the official closing film of this year's VeniceInternational Film Festival. I'd love to tell you more about The Great Wall, but right now we just don't have the information on what it will be about. The only description we have so far is this: "Zhang Yimou is directing the story of an elite force making a last stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure." That's a pretty basic plot description, but we Do know who will be starring in the film, thanks to a press release that dropped early this morning. Check it out:

BEIJING -- Director Feng Xiaogang unveiled his modern civil war film Assembly on Tuesday in the 10,000-seat Beijing Olympic boxing venue to an audience of students, dating yuppies and star-gazing middle-class Chinese overflowing into the aisles.
The film's Chinese premiere came during one of the government-imposed blackouts that bar Hollywood blockbusters from competing with domestic movies. Last week, Hong Kong director Peter Chan's The Warlords enjoyed the same shelter at the boxoffice and earned $1.6 million in its first day in China.
Four Hollywood blockbuster films, led by Transformers, have dominated China's boxoffice this year, each earning more than 100 million yuan ($13.5 million) and well outearning domestic films.
Zhang Mei, a recent university graduate, did not think the ban so bad. "It's OK, because every year there are so many Hollywood films that come to China. So in December, we get to see only our movies. We get to focus on these special movies," she said.
The Assembly premiere stretched to four hours, beginning at 7 p.m.

BEIJING -- Director Feng Xiaogang will unveil his civil war film "Assembly" on Dec. 18 in the 10,000-seat Olympic boxing venue, Huayi Brothers Pictures said Monday.
The film's Chinese premiere will stretch to three hours and include a celebration beginning at 7 p.m. featuring the film's stars -- Zhang Hanyu, Deng Chao, Yuen Wenkang and Tang Yan -- along with such celebrities as Zhang Ziyi, mainland China's most famous comic actor Ge You, Hong Kong director Stephen Chow and composer Tan Dun.
Beijing's Workers Arena will host the event, a warm-up for its turn next year as the site for boxing events during the 2008 Olympic Games.
The film's premiere marks the 10-year anniversary of China's so-called genre of New Year films. In China, where many cannot afford movie tickets, viewers long have been in the habit of going to the cinema only once per year.
Starting with "Dream Factory" in 1997, Feng has been the unrivaled king of the New Year film at the boxoffice, earning record-breaking sums from late December through the Lunar New Year in late January and early February.

BUSAN, South Korea -- Jiang Wen and Ge You, two of China's biggest actors, will star in director Feng Xiaogang' next movie, The Nobles, a comedy poking fun at the growing ranks of China's overnight millionaires.
"Jiang will play the nouveau riche guy and Ge You the con artist who scams him for his money," Feng told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, on the eve of the premiere of his anti-war film Assembly which opens the 12th Pusan International Film Festival.
Feng said he had delivered them a treatment of the script he wrote himself and hopes to start and finish it in time for release in 2008 around Christmas, a period that in years past has boosted Feng to become China's most bankable director at the boxoffice.
Feng hopes to shoot The Nobles in Beijing for about $5 million with Huayi Brother Pictures producing, but he said it might be inconvenient to do so because of the madness that will arrive in the Chinese capital with the Summer Olympics.

Chinese director Feng Xiaogang, whose Assembly will play to more than 5,000 people at the Thursday opening of the 12th annual Pusan International Film Festival, said he hopes the film will remind the audience of the real terror of war.
Feng, who served in China's army from 1978-84 during a period of conflict with Vietnam, said he was inspired by the rawness of Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gate and the Korean Taeguki, (Brotherhood), whose crew helped him shoot battle scenes near China's border with North Korea last winter.
"In the past, Chinese war film heroes were unafraid," Feng said, sitting under a tree, chain smoking under the brim of his trademark baseball cap. "This film should remind the world of the horrors of the regular soldier. No sacrifice should be forgotten, no matter what side you're on."
The film, about the struggle of a communist captain (Zhang Hanyu) to commemorate his fallen colleagues after a series of bloody battles in 1948-49, was drawn from a Yang Jingyuan short story and co-produced by Huayi Brothers Pictures of Beijing, Media Asia Films of Hong Kong and MK Pictures of Seoul.
