Stephanie McMahon, the daughter of former WWE founder Vince McMahon and now the company’s Co-CEO, began the company’s second-quarter earnings call with a tribute to her father as a “true founder and entrepreneur.”
Earlier this summer, she and Nick Khan were named Co-CEOs of the company as a board-initiated investigation into Vince McMahon’s conduct began. After the probe verified claims from numerous women of sexual harassment, retaliation and payoffs, McMahon resigned in July. Along with its financial results, the company reported earlier this morning that the investigation is now “substantially complete.”
McMahon and his wife, Linda “poured their heart and soul into building this business and taking WWE from a regional wrestling promotion in the 1980s to the global entertainment enterprise we are today,” Stephanie McMahon said. “He built the foundation we stand on and prepared us for the future.”

[Editor’s Note: The following review of “The Brave” Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot,” contains spoilers.]
“The Brave” may chronicle the actions of courageous men and women, but, as a series, it’s anything but. The pilot is a paint-by-numbers kidnap-and-rescue story with an unrealistically happy ending, and the military drama only approaches any kind of haunting authenticity with an ending as dark and terrifying as it is likely not to come true.
Beginning in Syria, the first episode picks up Dr. Kimberly Welles (Alix Wilton Regan) as she’s getting a ride home from her posting with Doctors Without Borders. But when her driver takes an alternate route and then abandons the car, gunmen descend on the car and take Kimberly by force.

To explain the genesis of NBC’s upcoming military drama The Brave, series creator Dean Georgaris invokes not the strategic genius of Sgt. Major Jonas Blane or the war-is-hell mentality of Capt. Benjamin “Hawkeye” Pierce, but the poor choices made by one Walter White.
“I don’t come from a military family. I don’t have a political axe to grind. I don’t have a particular fascination with death, but I am fascinated with human resiliency and human ingenuity,” Georgaris (Life of Pi) tells TVLine. After watching documentaries about American Special Forces teams, “I was continually impressed with their ingenuity.

Featuring arguably the most beloved zombie ever put to film, George A. Romero's Day of the Dead is a seminal standout in the horror genre that has grown a diehard fanbase in the thirty-plus years since its release. New takes on Romero's groundbreaking 1985 film were featured in 2005's Day of the Dead 2: Contagium and 2008's Day of the Dead, and now Saban Films has acquired the Us rights to Millennium Media's new Day of the Dead reimagining, with a release expected late this year:

For the broadcast networks this fall, women need not apply. With a few notable exceptions — Kyra Sedgwick (ABC’s “Ten Days in the Valley”), Edie Falco (NBC’s “Law & Order: True Crime – The Menendez Murders”), and Anne Heche (NBC’s “The Brave”) — female leads are few and far between.
Networks announced fewer new shows this year, practicing a little restraint rather than buying too many that wind up as late-season castoffs. However, women-led shows were hit hardest: Of approximately 36 new series, just 11 have a first-billed female. Last year there were 41 new shows, of which 20 had a female lead.
Blame might go to a handful of trends on this year’s schedules: More military-themed dramas led by tough guys, a rise in male-dominated sci-fi and comic book shows, and a TV trend that IndieWire has dubbed “Dude-Life Crisis.”

It’s official: NBC is only launching three new shows this fall, and one of them isn’t technically new — it’s the return of “Will & Grace,” the full trailer for which will premiere on Monday morning. But with the reveal of its fall schedule, NBC also debuted trailers for its two other new originals, which we’ve reviewed and ranked below.
“The Brave”
One of those unfortunate upfronts trailers that spells out the entire plot of the pilot episode, twist by twist (right down to the happy ending). But given that the premise of the series formally known as “For God and Country” hinges on a more procedural approach — every week, theoretically, there will be another victim in a dangerous part of the world for this elite military unit to save — that’s not too grievous an offense. And what this trailer does do well is establish some of the team’s quirks,...

There ought to be a place on a screen for every kind of film story. True, old movies fronted a mostly false consensus picture of the world, claiming that there was a ‘normal’ baseline for our lives. The reality of most social issues was ignored in favor of pleasant fairy tales where all conflicts could be solved on a personal level. Sometimes it seems like I spend a disproportionate amount of my life talking with actors about the differences between single-cam and multi-cam comedies. Here's another of those interviews. TBS and Sony Pictures TV's "Your Family or Mine" returns star Kyle Howard to the network and studio behind "My Boys," which had a well-regarded four-season run (but somehow aired only 49 episodes, which surprised me a little) ending in 2010. In November, I sat down with Howard on the "Your Family or Mine" set to talk about whether he feels any continuity between his earlier sitcom and the new one -- this was before a new creative administration took over at TBS -- and how the difference between single-cam and multi-cam comedies impact him. Howard agreed with co-star Kat Foster that the two leads have a very good chemistry and that that kind of chemistry is both rare and lucky. He also explains...

Moments later the viewer discovers what might have been troubling him as a police convoy raids a nearby building, smashing an illegal betting operation in the process. Even though a large part of my job is guiding people to TV shows they might find interesting, I rarely find it easy to point my own kids to things I think they should watch — or, better, to things we can watch together. There's too much good adult TV for me to keep track of these days, so I'm virtually lost when it comes to children's programming. Every now and then I'll stumble into something current and fun, like "Phineas & Ferb," or I'll pick out a vintage show that seems kid-safe(*), but they often want to watch the things their friends are watching, or just rewatch the same episode or even scene a thousand times in a row. (I can't swear to it, but I'm pretty sure the two kids spent a week at home where the only words they said to each other were, "Is mayonnaise an instrument?") And...

Kari Lizer is back at CBS. Two years after the cancellation of her CBS comedy The New Adventures Of Old Christine, the network has given a put pilot commitment to a new multi-camera comedy project from the writer-producer. It marks a departure for Lizer as it is her first show that doesn’t have a female lead. The untitled sitcom centers on a guy who finally meets the woman of his dreams but she happens to be his cousin’s fiancée. Warner Bros. TV, where Lizer is based, is producing with her Kari’s Logo Here banner. For the two development cycles after the May 2010 cancellation of Old Christine, which came down to the wire and didn’t allow Lizer to give the five-year comedy a proper ending, she opted to take her projects elsewhere. She pitched CBS, which had been courting her for while, earlier this week. In a great meeting,...

The unoriginality in Hollywood is well-documented, even expected at this point. 2011 set an all-time record for sequels, accounting for a fifth of the year’s wide releases, and there seems to be no end in sight to the prequels, sequels, remakes, and reboots as studios continue to invest in stale ideas. Unfortunately, it’s spreading. A trend shows the movie industry’s lobotomized, risk-averse decision-making is infecting TV now more than ever.
Previously: “Zombieland” and “The Punisher” TV Series in the Works at Fox
Creative, original, scripted shows already compete for attention with “unscripted” reality programming on thousands of channels, or network remakes of old TV series (like NBC’s upcoming “Munsters” or ABC’s failed “Charlie’s Angels”). Now, TV remakes of popular film titles could crowd the channels until, like the box office, there’s only a fraction of “new” left.

New Adventures Of Old Christine creator Kari Lizer has emerged as an early star of the broadcast pilot season with 2 orders. On the heels of NBC greenlighting her female buddy comedy Friday evening, ABC just picked up her other project. I can’t think of another case of a comedy writer-producer who has gotten 2 pilots picked up by mid-January when the broadcast networks are barely starting to order their dramas. Lizer’s untitled multi-camera comedy, from Warner Bros. TV, centers on Hilary Pfeiffer-Dunne, a high-powered executive who, having dominated the corporate America for years, now faces the biggest challenge of her life when she finds herself unemployed and acting as a full-time mom to her two teenagers. Both of Lizer’s pitches this season sold with put pilot commitments in September. The green light at ABC extends Lizer’s impressive streak of having all of her scripts to date picked...

In what could be the last comedy pilot pickup at NBC this season, the network has given a cast-contingent order to a multi-camera comedy from The New Adventures of Old Christine creator Kari Lizer. The project, produced by Warner Bros. TV where Lizer is under an overall deal, is a workplace comedy about a relationship-challenged woman who, with the help of her co-workers, guides people through unexpected career transitions and downsizings. The comedy sparked a bidding war when it hit the marketplace in October, eventually landing at NBC with a production commitment. It brings Lizer back to NBC where she worked on Will & Grace for 4 years before segueing to developing. The pickup at NBC means that all of Lizer's projects so far have gone to pilot. She previously developed during the 2004-05 season when she sold Christine to CBS and True to the WB. Both were ordered to pilot and...

We're looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competitive field.
Previously: 78, 79, 81, 82, 83, 85, 87, 88, 90 and 95
Twenty years after her first nomination for The Deer Hunter (1978) Meryl Streep replaced Bette Davis as runner up to Katharine Hepburn's Oscar throne with her cancer victim in One True Thing. For a very short time period (i.e. twelve months) the three legends had a 10-11-12 Oscar nomination spread. Streep would soon leave both Hepburn and Davis in the dust. But we'll get to her #1 status when it rolls around.
1998 the nominees were
Cate Blanchett, ElizabethFernanda Montenegro, Central Station *Nathaniel's vote*
Gwyneth Paltrow, Shakespeare in LoveMeryl Streep, One True ThingEmily Watson, Hilary & Jackie
The Blanchett vs. Paltrow contest has arguably been the most discussed in modern Oscar Actress history with the possible exception of Swank vs. Bening (both rounds). People still get hot under their ruffs about this one a full dozen years later.

NBC ... Smart As A Peacock!
It's no secret that NBC has not been our favorite TV network lately. Between the Southland debacle and the dangling of, then taking away of the Tyler Briggs carrot, it's not been a good time for gay visibility from the network that brought us Will & Grace.

Is "Party Down" nearing its end?
Not if co-creators and executive producers Rob Thomas ("Veronica Mars"), John Enbom and Dan Etheridge have anything to say about it.
Talk of the upcoming season, the theoretical future, new additions and potential departures of cast members were discussed at Wednesday night's panel moderated by THR's Andrew Wallenstein at Beverly Hills' Paley Center for Media.
With Season 2 premiering Friday on Starz, viewers will notice one distinct change: Jane Lynch, who played an integral role on the catering crew in the half-hour comedy's first season, is no longer a regular thanks to the success of her other gig, a little show called "Glee."
"We knew going in that Jane was already signed up to do 'Glee' and we were just waiting for when that would happen," Enbom said. "We were very lucky to get eight [episodes in Season 1] out of the deal instead of three or four.

Opens: 2010
Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington
Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.
Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

"The New Adventures of Old Christine" creator Kari Lizer has inked a rich new overall deal with the show's producer, Warner Bros. Television.
Under the three-year pact, said to be in the high seven figures, Lizer will focus on developing projects for the studio.
Additionally, she will continue as executive producer/showrunner on "Christine" should the comedy series starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus be picked up for a sixth season.
For the past two seasons, "Christine," which was assigned the tough job of opening a second comedy night for CBS on Wednesday, was on the bubble at the Eye but ultimately given last-minute renewals.
Both years, ABC had offered to step in and pick up the series, which earned Louis-Dreyfus an Emmy for playing harried divorced mom Christine Campbell.
Following its most recent renewal by CBS in May, "Christine" hit a milestone, with broadcast and cable syndication sales to Lifetime and a number of station groups,...
