During the early years of Nazi occupation of France in World War II, romance blooms between Lucile Angellier (Michelle Williams), a French villager, and Bruno von Falk (Matthias Schoenaerts), a German soldier.
Initially, Matthias Schoenaerts didn't want to accept the role of a Nazi officer because he had moral issues with the character, but he changed his mind after he read the book in which the film is based on and thought, "if the writer loves the character so much, then I have to allow myself to love him as well".
Be careful... with your life.
Lieutenant Bruno von Falk: Is it precious to you?
Lucile Angellier: Yes. It is precious to me.
When the Viscount is shot at close range sitting in a chair, he merely slumps. A dozen rounds would have knocked him clean over at the very least.
The final credits initially play over what appears to be the original hand-written manuscript of the novel.
