The Notebook is covering Tiff with an on-going correspondence between critics Kelley Dong and Daniel Kasman.RomaDear Kelley,I’m excited to be here in Toronto again with you, though admittedly with melancholy feelings, for I must note with broken heart that our comrade Fernando F. Croce, who has been covering the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) with me for the last six years, had to cancel his trip last minute. But I very much look forward to you and I continuing the festival correspondence we began together with Fern last year, for this year’s event looks very promising indeed. It’s been an unexpectedly quiet international festival season so far in 2018, with Berlin, Cannes, and Locarno offering softer-than-normal premieres, many of which are now headed to North America. At Tiff from Berlin, we have written on and recommend: Transit (with a director interview), An Elephant Sitting Still. MollywoodThe film’s first look poster was launched recently by Dulquer Salmaan on his Facebook page.Digital NativeDigital NativeIn the recent past, we have seen several music directors turning into successful heroes. Gv Prakash Kumar and Vijay Anthony are successful music composers who managed to capture the hearts of their fans with their acting skills. Joining this bandwagon now is Gopi Sunder. An accomplished music director, Gopi came up with fine tunes for films such as Big B, Ustad Hotel, Mumbai Police, Abcd and Pulimurugan. The composer is all geared up to play the lead role in the Malayalam film Toll Gate. The film is scripted and directed by Hari Krishnan. The film’s first look poster was launched recently by Dulquer Salmaan on his Facebook page, confirming that Gopi was indeed making his acting debut. It may be mentioned here that Gopi has appeared in small roles in films like Mr Fraud and Salala Mobiles, but this is the first time that he will be playing the hero. According to reports doing the rounds, Gopi will also be composing the tunes for Toll Gate besides playing the lead. Gopi made his debut as music director in the Malayalam film industry with the 2006 release Notebook and his Bollywood debut happened the very next year with Dhol. His first film in Tamil was Poi Solla Porom in 2008. He went on to win the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for the first time for the Malayalam film Anwar. He also bagged the National Film Award for Best Background Score for the film 1983 that was released in 2014 and he has a host of other awards to his credit too. Though he has inked a deal to star as hero, Gopi has a number of films in Malayalam and Telugu that needs his attention for music composition. His current Malayalam projects include Kayamkulam Kochunni and Abrahaminte Santhathikal, while in Telugu he has Geetha Govindam. Mubi is exclusively showing Juliana Antunes' Baronesa (2017) as part of a collaboration with the Film Society of Lincoln Center for their Art of the Real showcase of innovative voices in nonfiction and hybrid filmmaking. The film is playing May 8 - June 7, 2018 in the United States and May 24 - June 23, 2018 in most other countries in the world.Juliana Antunes is still doing a road tour with her debut feature, Baronesa, which has played at film festivals from Tiradentes, Brazil, to FIDMarseille and Art of the Real at Lincoln Center, to name a few, and won for best film at FICValdivia, the Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano in Havana, and at the Festival of Mar del Plata. This string of successes didn’t necessarily make the road to a second film easy, as the situation of indie filmmakers in Brazil, and in Latin America in general, continues to be fragile.

more than everythingFor those who love their live music to be risk-taking and cutting-edge, the Big Ears Festival, a 4-day event each March in Knoxville, Tennessee, is the place to be. For those who like their cinema of similar boldness and eclecticism, Big Ears is becoming a destination for that, too. Focusing on experimental work and inspired retrospectives, the film section of Big Ears is now in its third year, programmed by critic Darren Hughes (who writes regularly for the Notebook) and filmmaker Paul Harrill (Something, Anything), who together run The Public Cinema, a non-profit screening series shown at the Knoxville Museum of Art that operates year-long. Big Ears' film program is an exciting extension and expansion of The Public Cinema's initiative, which brings international art cinema like Hong Sang-soo's On the Beach Alone at Night and Valeska Grisebach's Western, as well as American independent cinema like Frederick Wiseman...

One of the most exciting things about Dallas Season 1 was that Jr, who Hagman began playing in 1978, was still Jr and Hagman was clearly having a blast stirring the pot with Jr’s devilish ways.
Doing press for the show was just as thrilling and meeting Hagman, as well as other original cast members Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray, was a marvel because the actor was so full of life, cracking jokes and fist bumping every journalist in the press...

This week’s Jim’s Notebook gets emptied out with a glance ahead to November, when so many great shows are either premiering or returning with new episodes.

Pretty Little Liars: The annual Halloween episode that aired earlier this week kicked some butt in the ratings but also deepened the mystery of the show, thanks to the expert storytelling of Executive Producer Joseph Dougherty. We definitely had some chilling moments: the lives of both Aria and Spencer were threatened; Mona continued her dastardly ways; someone definitely died and Adam Lambert rocked the Ghost Train.

When we quiet and polite Canadians first began planning our non-violent take-over of Pajiba I breezily volunteered to do a Famous Canadians list. How difficult could it be to pick 10 Canadians who were famous for being more than just incredibly polite motherfuckers? Seventeen hours and eleventy billion Google hits later it became apparent that it was much more difficult than you bitches think. We've managed to smuggle, I mean introduce, a helluva lot of Canadians into the Us over the years and while some of them stick out like wearing a toque on a hot summer day, others have managed to blend in so well even I was surprised to discover they were one of us. So, in order to whittle my list down to 10 I decided to only include people who were universally recognized as Canadians.
And yeah, I realize there are famous Canadians out there other than actors (hello Frank Gehry!
