Word of mouth could not be stronger for The Dressmaker, judging by its superb second weekend takings in Australian cinemas.
However Wayne Hope.s comedy Now Add Honey misfired, perhaps illustrating the gulf in sensibility between TV and cinema.
Jocelyn Moorhouse.s The Dressmaker scored $3.6 million at 289 locations, a drop of just 3 per cent, which hoists its earnings to $8.26 million.
With that kind of stamina, the dramedy based on the Rosalie Han novel, starring Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth and Hugo Weaving, could be headed for $20 million.
The Universal release was a cut above the rest as none of the newcomers made an impression and nationwide receipts dropped by 7 per cent to $9.9 million, according to Rentrak.s estimate.
Ridley Scott.s The Martian advanced to $25.3 million after earning $1.4 million in its sixth orbit (off just 10 per cent), while Steven Spielberg.s Bridge of Spies took $973,000 in its third weekend (down 25 per cent), reaching $5.6 million.

One would never imagine Santa Claus as…..a private eye.
From the mind of television/video game writer Jeremy Bernstein, he wrote a comic book series about a supernatural Santa Claus moonlighting as a detective in this film noir-inspired series.
Here’s the synopsis:
A modern day noir, in which a down-and-out Saint Nick spends the Other 364 days of the year holding his own in the lonely city, just another average jake trying to make ends meet. He’s traded the red and white suit for a trenchcoat and fedora, traded the North Pole for back alleys and rain-slicked streets. Instead of days filled with jolly elves and hand-made toys, it’s long, dark nights filled with gangster, guns, and femme fatales… and the nicer they look, the naughtier they are.
When the wealthy, widowed Julia Barton hires Nick to find out who murdered her husband, it could be the...

Directing his first feature film, Now Add Honey, Wayne Hope staged a scene in Melbourne on Tuesday in which a character played by his wife Robyn Butler gets so angry she smashes a windscreen.
100 Bloody Acres actor Angus Sampson was on the other side of the windscreen. The glass duly shattered, nobody got hurt and Hope got the shots he wanted.
Asked if anyone was concerned about how his wife would handle the scene, Hope told If, .I wasn.t worried, but other people were.. That.s the kind of easy rapport you would expect between the husband and wife who collaborated on the ABC-tv series The Librarians and Very Small Business.
Butler wrote the screenplay for Now Add Honey, which stars Lucy Fry (who.ll be seen in the upcoming Hollywood film Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters), Portia de Rossi, Hamish Blake, Sampson, Ben Lawson and Lucy Durack.

Even though Matchbox Pictures. award-winning project was an eight-part TV series, sound designer Craig Carter treated it like a full-blown feature film.

Whereas in cinema, we start to move into the more traditional role of what music does, which is try and describe the emotional state somebody is in and take up the storytelling, and that.s what we were trying to do with The Slap and I think we got there..
That emotional storytelling was the key to the success of the series which was based on Christos Tsiolkas. best-selling novel.

Gpy&R Melbourne has launched a new campaign for Heinz Beanz.
The campaign, which carries the tagline ‘Bust out the Beanz’, is a call for Australians to rediscover the famous food that is often left in the cupboard.
The TV ad is voiced by comedian Kim Gyngell, known for his work on Full Frontal and The Librarians.
Tom Ward, head of strategy and insights at Gpy&R, said: “We didn’t need to convince people to buy baked beans, or even Heinz Beanz. Every day Heinz Beanz move off the supermarket shelf, into the trolly and into the cupboard. The problem is that all too often that is where they stay, to the point that people will sometimes end up with two or three cans tucked away.”
The campaign breaks on Sunday, and runs until the end of the year.

The third series of The Librarians is bigger than its predecessors. Miguel Gonzalez visited the Melbourne set of the cult ABC comedy.
Most of the time, the Melbourne Showgrounds are an exhibition and functions venue, but occasionally, they are also the home of the Middleton Interactive Learning Centre and her manager, head librarian Frances O’Brien. ABC TV’s comedy The Librarians – launched in 2007 – was originally shot at an old car dealership in Melbourne, but people kept trying to come in thinking it was a real library.
