As a long time De Palma fan I have to state that this is the least De Palmaesque film that he has ever made. This is by no means a criticism of De Palma but applauding his bravery in making possibly his least commercial movie in a guerrilla style in order to do justice to a very sensitive subject matter. Using a mixture of fictional soldiers' video diaries, faux French documentary, (fictionalisaed) news footage and internet blogs and movies, he has attempted to construct the events leading to and the after effects of a true incident in which a 15 year old Iraqi girl was raped and killed by members of a US troop serving in Samara, Iraq. In telling this story, De Palma pulls no punches whatsoever which makes for quite uncomfortable viewing at times. One can not say that he has been wholly successful in his attempt. The last image of the movie, which is bound to cause controversy, will stay in the memory for a long time.
