As of 2013, the house has been renamed "The Inn at Rodanthe" and completely refurbished to more closely resemble the interior movie scenes which were filmed elsewhere in North Carolina. Sun Realty manages the property and has extensive photographs of the interior, particularly the blue bedroom in which Richard Gere's character stays while visiting. The unique shutter doors into the kitchen have also been re-created as have the various shutters, porches, and exterior details.

The house in which the movie is set is a vacation rental property, not a bed and breakfast, and is named "Serendipity".

Diane Lane and Richard Gere appeared in Unfaithful (2002) and The Cotton Club (1984).

The original house was built too close to the beach, with an insufficient foundation. After the film crew left, the house was declared a public nuisance and condemned. Later, it was purchased, moved to a new location, and renovated to more closely match the house featured in the film. (The new owners were big fans.)

At only one hour and thirty-seven minutes, this is the shortest film based on a Nicholas Sparks novel to date.

The rental home Serendipity was damaged and condemned after a Noreaster in November 2009.

This is the fourth film adapted from a Nicholas Sparks novel.

According to Nicholas Sparks (who wrote the book on which this movie was based), the two lead characters were, in part, created after real-life happenings about the way he and his wife Cathy met and started their relationship in a small coastal town.

By January 2010, shoreline erosion had left the Serendipity house completely in the surf. New owners hired one of the companies that moved the Cape Hatteras lighthouse to move Serendipity to a somewhat less spectacular, but somewhat safer nearby lot in Rodanthe. Only the house's exterior appears in the film - the interiors existed only in a studio. The owners reportedly plan to remodel the house, re-creating the studio interiors, to enhance its value as a vacation rental.

This is the second movie where the female lead chooses Richard Gere's character over Christopher Meloni's character. It also happens in Runaway Bride (1999).

Three of this movies actors and actresses have appeared in the long running NBC drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999). Christopher Meloni as Detective Elliot Stabler, Pablo Schreiber as William Lewis, and Mae Whitman as Cassidy Cornell.

Three of the cast members of this film have appeared in the DC Extended Universe. Diane Lane as Martha Kent in Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2017), Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy in Man of Steel (2013), and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad (2016).

Viola Davis is also a Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999) alumnus. She played Donna Emmett from 2003 to 2008.
