A remake of the 1951 classic science fiction film about an alien visitor and his giant robot counterpart who visit Earth.
In the original 1951 film, the earth's electricity was only disabled for 30 minutes as a demonstration. In this film, the world's electricity is shut off permanently when the sphere deactivates the nanite swarm, per Klaatu's warning that there will be a price to the modern human way of life.

Klaatu: There's another side to you. I feel it now.
Helen Benson: Is that how it ends?
Helen Benson: You can't stop it?
Klaatu: I don't know. It would come at a price, to you and your way of life.
Helen Benson: But we can change, you know that now. Please, please, just...
When the mother ship lands in the park, the shadows of approaching people shrink. One would expect they should lengthen, since the light is descending. However, if the light is coming from within the sphere, and it is approaching people not from directly above, but horizontally, shadows would appear to shrink.
