It's a good time to be an R.L. Stine fan. After adapting his "Cheerleaders" trilogy in 2021, Netflix is back to adapt another "Fear Street" novel, this time as a standalone movie. Stine himself announced the news on X/Twitter yesterday:
"A new 'Fear Street' movie is about to go into production for Netflix. It's based on my 'Fear Street' book, 'The Prom Queen.' Good news!"
The 1992 novel takes place once again in the appropriately-named town of Shadyside. The town's high school has prom coming up, and there are five potential Prom Queen candidates in the running. But somebody starts killing the girls one by one, and it's up to main character Lizzie McVay to get to the bottom of things before she herself is murdered. In 2022 it was reported that Chloe Okuno (director of "Watcher" and "Slut") had closed a deal to direct the next "Fear Street" movie,...

One way you can be fairly sure a film didn’t work for you is, when you’ve finished watching it and discover it won an award at a film festival you never heard of, that you then check if the festival is real, or if the director of the movie is the organizer of it. Yes, and no, to those two questions, so I’m really puzzled.
Peter (Erik Fellows) is a sleazy lawyer – we know because he forgot his beautiful girlfriend’s birthday – and he represents the Smith crime family, led by Lin Shaye, who either owed someone a favour or filmed all her scenes in a day. By now Eleven is on her way to becoming a TV pop culture icon, much like the beloved 90’s character Buffy Summers. A brilliant fan-made “Stranger Things” and “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” mashup video, created by YouTube user Tony Harley, envisions Millie Bobby Brown as the slayer and defender of fictional town Hawkins in a “Buffy”-style credits sequence – and it’s as if these two hit series were meant to be!
Since its debut, the Duffer Brother’s Netflix series became an instant sensation, garnering a strong following among viewers of all ages. Well on its way to leave a mark in TV history, the show has been praised for its homage to the ‘80s, as well as for its talented cast.

Sometimes things truly seemed destined to happen, an example being this haunting, dare I say moving, mashup of the “Stranger Things” and “Twin Peaks” theme songs from Seattle’s Prom Queen. The aptly titled “Stranger Peaks” proves once again that too much synth is never enough.

“I fell in love with ‘Stranger Things’ the first time I heard the theme song,” said Prom Queen, “and ‘Laura’s Theme’ is my favorite thing to play on any synthesizer. It’s so beautiful.”
Similarities abound between the two shows, as it’s no secret that “Stranger Things,” a Netflix summer sensation and supernatural hometown thriller from brothers/directors Matt and Ross Duffer, finds its roots in ’80s sci-ci and horror flicks from the likes of Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter — and of course, from David Lynch’s TV masterpiece. In my estimation, Stranger Things and Twin Peaks are...nothing alike. They both take place in small towns and feature spooky goings-on, and that's about it! But I quite like this mashup of the series' respective theme songs, which gives us a synth-y version of Angelo Badalamenti's classic tune, expertly woven with Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein's already-beloved opening music for Netflix's blockbuster summer hit. I would be remiss not to mention the Soundcloud user who uploaded the track calls him or herself "Prom Queen," which I'll just pretend is a tribute to Laura Palmer and call it a day. Earlier this summer Blade star Wesley Snipes made some headlines when he mentioned having "really productive" meetings with Marvel about a project he wouldn't name. Naturally everyone made the leap that Snipes must be talking about starring in a new Blade movie, or perhaps the character making an appearance in one of the approximately 10,000 Marvel TV shows currently in the works. And now a rumor has emerged that would back that up, but with a bit of a twist. According to Bleeding Cool, Marvel Comics was going to launch a new print series that would focus on Blade's daughter. Here's their description of the comic. Fallon Grey is a sixteen year old girl from rural Oregon. Nominated for Prom Queen, Captain of the debate team, most popular girl in her class...

There’s been much ado about a potential return of Blade on the big screen over the last several months. During July’s San Diego Comic Con, Blade himself, Wesley Snipes, said that he was in talks with Marvel about a new movie. Snipes played the character in three “Blade” movies, the last of which “Blade: Trinity” was released eleven-years ago in 2004. Bleeding Cool (via Coming Soon) now reports that Marvel Studios is actively crafting the blueprint for a new “Blade” film utilizing the framework of a new comic that focuses on the vampire superhero and his newly-created daughter. The comic was planned as part of the “All-New, All-Different Marvel,” relaunch and was set for release this October. It has since been pushed back, and Bleeding Cool contends that the decision was made by the Marvel higher-ups who are looking to craft a cinematic return for the character based on the comic’s storyline.

Talk of a new Blade movie stirred up again when Marvel regained the rights to their iconic daywalker. While no hard and fast plans have been put in motion, it’s not out of the question for the comic studio behemoth to have renewed interest in the franchise. The huge success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe twinned with the Sony deal reintroducing Spider-Man into that world is proof enough. Marvel Studios knows how to do its own material justice – and Wesley Snipes has even batted the idea around in several interviews.
According to a source over at Bleeding Cool, the studio is well aware of the comics’ popularity and plans to reboot it for the big screen. Except, with one significant change. Instead of following the exploits of Blade himself, he’d get backburnered in favor of his own daughter. Fallon Grey assumes the Blade mantle in Marvel’s rebooted universe,...

Sean Connery's last appearance as James Bond, and the last 'unofficial' 007 movie. We revisit Never Say Never Again...
So does this count? Never Say Never Again stirs many arguments by shaking up the official order, splitting fans on the issue of its legitimacy. Ruins pub quiz questions such as ‘How many actors have played M?’ due to the inevitable argument whether Edward Fox should be numbered. Put such issues aside and enjoy what remains: a sly, witty semi-pastiche that doesn’t attempt to recapture past glories but can easily hold its own alongside Diamonds Are Forever and Octopussy. And with much less swimming than Thunderball.
The Villain: Ignore Emilo: Maximillian Largo is his own maniac. Short, tubby, lanky blond hair receding, Largo is Draco Malfoy gone to seed. Easily visualised shuffling around Comic Con, accompanied by Mr Kidd and the reformed Jaws. Yet Largo is one of the film’s strengths.

The first time Michael Keaton hosted Saturday Night Live back in 1982, the New Joe Jackson Band served as the episode's musical guest (the next time he hosted, ten whole years later, Morrissey was on deck to provide the jams). The New Joe Jackson band may no longer exist, but Keaton happens to be in the midst of a major career resurgence (note to Joe Jackson: hey, maybe now it's time for that comeback tour), and a return to the SNL stage feels like a necessary, if not still amusing stop...

We here at This is Our Design have never been to Colombia, but we still strongly question their fashion senses with it comes to neck ties. If watching Hannibal has taught us anything, it’s certainly to love what we wear (and eat and listen to and…). There’s just something…oh, we don’t know…tongue-not-in-cheek…about the Colombian accessory.
Wow, we’ll even admit how terrible that one was. Let’s move on…
It’s another in-depth podcast that you have in front of you, but if you were expecting anything else at this point, you are literally insane. We recommend a Dr. Lecter. We also recommend you take into careful consideration what co-hosts Sean Colletti and Kate Kulzick have to say, because special guest Sarah D. Bunting from Tomato Nation brought out the best in them. Tune in for discussions of the seen and unseen, Freddie Lounds...

Netflix is looking to bolster its operation overseas, and in order to further that goal, it has hired an experienced digital executive. According to a report by Variety, Larry Tanz, who previously served as the CEO of Vuguru, has joined Netflix as its VP of content acquisition for Europe. As CEO, Tanz led Vuguru's efforts to produce both digital content across multiple formats. Initially, it was best known for short-form series like Little Women, Big Cars and Prom Queen. Recently, it expanded its reach to include more long-form content, including several feature films. In the past six months, Vuguru has distributed two films on Hulu: Play Nice, starring Mary Lynn Rajskub, and Feels So Good, a teen comedy. Before recruiting Tanz, Netflix had already formed a relationship with Tornante, Vuguru's parent company. The Michael Eisner-owned firm helped create BoJack Horseman, an animated series that debuted on Netflix earlier this year.

We're three episodes in to How To Get Away With Murder and three episodes is where I draw the line if a show isn't working for me. Time is too precious: one season of a network series is time enough for ten or eleven movies, you know? You could basically catch up with the entire Best Picture lineup from 1939 in that time, something surely all of America is eager to do if someone would only suggest it to them as an alternative to watching another season of CSI: Wherever*. For love of Viola Davis I'm giving this series one more episode to win me over instead. Also because ABC has promised that my jaw will drop with "the last nine words" from Viola's mouth on episode 4. If their prophesy is true, we'll see. But I shall state it simply: after three episodes I can safely say that I think the show is bad.

I Tumblr For You; The Kids Aren’t Alright in Reitman’s Latest
Parents and their burgeoning teenagers battle their insecurities and repressed sexuality amidst ever present technology in an otherwise hushed community in a tightly woven all-American town. Sound familiar? On the surface, Jason Reitman’s latest effort Men, Women & Children is trying so very much to be American Beauty. There’s the hyper-sexualized cheerleaders, the stifled paternal figures and their mentally or morally absent partners, who all crash into their own devastating denouements. Unfortunately, despite his effort to create a modified updated retelling of Sam Mendes’ masterpiece for the plugged-in age, Reitman’s film is ersatz, and instantly forgotten.
Via Emma Thompson’s voiceover (which was used to far better effect in the underrated Stranger than Fiction), the audience is introduced to the close-knit residents of a Texan town. There’s the sexually frustrated married couple Don (Adam Sandler...

You can say what you’d like about the never-ending stream of Als Ice Bucket videos clogging your social media feeds, but when you look at the numbers, a current donation total of $22.9 million can’t be argued with. With only $1.9 million donated during the exact same time period last year and no reported cases of pneumonia yet, I’d say the Ice Bucket Challenge is quite the smashing success whether you drenched yourself in freezing water, donated some dough, or did both!
With that said, the real challenge now is finding new and inventive ways to douse yourself in the name of Als. I’ve recently had a construction buddy of mine get an entire bulldozer full of icy water dumped on him, Paul Bissonnette took a load of actual glacier water from a helicopter, but leave it to the most awesome man on the face of the Earth...

First comes a warning.
Some Spoilers For ‘Twin Peaks’ & ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’ Contained
Everyone has their white whale; that elusive treasure or goal that they fetishise and dare to find and covet. For some it was the lost footage from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. For others it was the mythical buried reels of The Wicker Man, which rather ludicrously had been rumoured for years to be buried in the concrete foundations of an English motorway. For me it was always the deleted scenes of David Lynch’s much maligned Twin Peaks prequel Fire Walk with Me. Even in a pre-internet, pre-dvd extras age, I obsessed over this rumoured material and what possible insights it may offer into Lynch’s labyrinthian mystery. And now, thanks to the Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery Blu-ray set, they are finally here. So how do they stack up? What do they tell us?...

It was supposed to have been a night of glamour and celebration for the students at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Conn. Instead, friends decked out in their prom best made their way to a nearby beach to mourn the death of classmate Maren Sanchez, 16, who was stabbed to death earlier in the day inside their high school. Police are investigating whether the junior had been killed for rejecting a fellow student's prom invitation to be his date, and authorities confirmed that a 16-year-old boy had been taken into custody. Easy Peasy: Stein Returns to High School Hallways for Sweet Hearted Message Movie
Five years before Mean Girls brought the monstrous high heeled bitch posse back to the forefront of PG-13 blockbuster entertainment, director Darren Stein’s 1999 film Jawbreaker explored the morbid universe of a trio of black hearted murderous maidens in the delightful R tradition of Heathers. In his first feature since then, Stein goes back to the hallways of high school with G.B.F., once again revisiting the formula of the popular female triumvirate, only this time aligning himself with the spirit of John Hughes. Many aspects of high school life may seemingly never change, but Stein’s latest rendering, while extolling a message that seems deliriously obvious to the adult world, cheerfully proposes that even this rigid, socially conditioned environment has had opportunity to grapple with progressive notions of equality.
