Netflix’s latest series will feature two award-winning actors in the lead. Dan Levy, best known for portraying David Rose on the hit series Schitt’s Creek, and Laurie Metcalf, who played Jackie Harris in Roseanne and its sequel series The Conners, will lead a new crime comedy series on the streamer, per Entertainment Weekly.

Both Levy and Metcalf are four-time Emmy winners, and Metcalf was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Greta Gerwig’s 2017 film Lady Bird. The yet-untitled series is described as a family crime comedy and was announced at Netflix’s recent upfront presentation.

Bradley Cooper’s Searchlight film “Is This Thing On?,” starring Will Arnett, Laura Dern, Cooper himself, Andra Day and Sean Hayes, wrapped production on Wednesday.

Amy Sedaris, Chloe Radcliffe, Scott Icenogle, Jordan Jensen, NFL quarterback Peyton Manning and Reggie Conquest are joining the cast of the film, which is also rounded out by James Tom, Gabe Fazio, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, Blake Kane, Calvin Knegten, Derek Gaines and Matt Richards.

“Is This Thing On?” is penned by Cooper, Arnett and Mark Chappell (“See How They Run”). Cooper, who also directed, serves as a producer alongside Weston Middleton under their Lea Pictures banner, with Arnett and Kris Thykier.

HBO has greenlit the limited series “Dtf St. Louis” with Jason Bateman and David Harbour set for two of the lead roles, Variety has learned.

HBO has given the series a seven-episode order. The show was originally announced as being in development back in 2022 with Harbour and Pedro Pascal attached to star and executive produce. The project was originally inspired by the James Lasdun New Yorker article “My Dentist’s Murder Trial: Adultery, False Identities, and a Lethal Sedation.”

However, according to an individual with knowledge of the project, the creative direction of the series evolved over time and is now based on a wholly original idea with no connection to the original article. In addition, Pascal is no longer attached in any capacity. He remains in business with HBO, though, with the second season of “The Last of Us” set to debut in 2025.

The WGA has written a new role for Niecy Nash-Betts: host of its strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards in Los Angeles next month.

The announcement comes as Hollywood streamers and broadcasters continue to assess the impact left by the work stoppages due to the months-long WGA and SAG-Aftra strikes. Sources say Netflix’s decision to cancel stemmed from various reasons including performance and impact from the strike — as the industry evaluates production schedules, scheduling shifts, etc.

As Netflix has said about previous cancellations, the streamer continues to look at viewing versus cost as it evaluates shows. In the case of series like “Agent Elvis,” “Glamorous,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall,” each show only ran for one season before its cancellation. One season's going to be it for the supernatural detective series Lockwood & Co., as the show has been officially canceled. Variety reports that Netflix has pulled the plug on Lockwood & Co. with no plans to develop a second season. The first season, which debuted on the streaming platform in January, will now serve as the only season for the show. In the era of streaming, there's no shortage of animated, multi-genre, high-concept shows like Inside Job. This may be surprising to some viewers because Inside Job was unique in its own right. Wanda Sykes is getting into business with Warner Bros. TV.

Push It Productions, the company founded by Sykes and Page Hurwitz, has signed a first-look deal with the studio. Push It has also hired former Wbtv executive Rachel Davis as vp development. Under the two-year deal, the trio will develop both scripted and unscripted projects for Warner Bros.; sitcom and variety projects are already in development.

“Wbtv makes some of the best comedy shows out there today and we can’t wait to create their next great series,” Sykes and Hurwitz said in a statement. “We are excited about this partnership.”

Push It Productions is behind The Upshaws, the Netflix comedy series that stars Sykes, Mike Epps and Kim Fields and has been renewed for a third season. The company also produced Stand Out, a comedy special that features LGBTQ+ comics conceived, co-written and co-directed by Hurwitz, and an accompanying documentary.

Award-winning comedian Wanda Sykes will return to Netflix with a new hourlong comedy special premiering globally May 23.

The special, titled “I’m an Entertainer,” is directed by Linda Mendoza and was filmed in early February at the Miller Theater in Philadelphia.

Dan Levy has spoken about ending his beloved comedy Schitt’s Creek, revealing how he knew it was “right” to bring it to a close after its six-season run.

The Emmy-winning sitcom – which Levy co-created with and starred in alongside his real-life father Eugene Levy – follows the trials and tribulations of a once-wealthy family whose sudden bankruptcy forces them to move to a dilapidated town.

Speaking to Dua Lipa on the latest episode of her iHeartMeadia podcast, At Your Service, the 39-year-old multi-hyphenate recalled the decision to end the fan-favourite series as being “such a gut instinct”.

“I believe in the legacy of something. And I think in order to create legacy, you have to leave people wanting more,” Levy explained.

“I think the minute you overstay your welcome, or the minute you push it too far, people don’t return.”

Matt Rogers’ debut comedy special “Have You Heard of Christmas?” will premiere on Showtime on Dec. 2.

Based on his live show of the same name, the special features an original set of holiday pop music and stand-up comedy as Rogers seeks to win approval as the next “Pop Prince of Christmas.” The special was taped with a live audience at Joe’s Pub within the Public Theater in New York, and will feature performances and short comedic bits from guest stars Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”) and comedy duo Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson (“Fucking Identical Twins”).

Rogers is known for co-hosting the podcast “Las Culturistas” with Yang, and recently starred in “I Love That For You” on Showtime and the Searchlight and Hulu film “Fire Island.” He has also written for HBO Max’s “The Other Two” and Netflix’s “Q-Force” along with co-creating the Quibi series “Gayme Show.

Netflix has recruited HBO Max’s Billy Wee and Disney’s Maggie Malone while also promoting one internal exec as the streaming giant has expanded its animation ranks in the wake of Mike Moon’s exit.

Wee, who had served as senior vp comedy and animation at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed HBO Max, will serve as director of adult animation comedy series. Jermaine Turner, who joined Netflix in 2020, has been promoted to director of adult animation action series. Together, Wee and Turner will oversee all adult animated comedy series and action series, respectively. Both will be based in L.A. and report to John Derderian, vp animation series. Together, they will fill the void created by Moon on the TV side.

Abbott Elementary, The White Lotus and Yellowjackets were among the top winners at the Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics’ Dorians TV Awards, which were announced Wednesday. The shows took home the awards for best TV comedy, miniseries and drama, respectively.

Bob’s Burgers, Heartstopper, Squid Game and The Other Two were also among the winners. Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey won best TV performance, while The White Lotus‘ Jennifer Coolidge won best supporting TV performance and the Wilde Wit award.

Galeca’s inaugural TV Icon honor (streamlined from its original name, The “You Deserve An Award!” Award), came out a tie. The Good Fight and The Gilded Age star Christine Baranski shares the title with comic actress Cassandra Peterson, known best as her alter ego Elvira.

Netflix has officially confirmed the cancellation of the animated series “Q-Force,” a queer comedy following an undervalued group of LGBTQ+ superspies as they go on personal and professional adventures.

Prominent figures in comedy such as Sean Hayes, Wanda Sykes, Patti Harrison, Matt Rogers of the popular “Las Culturistas” podcast, actors David Harbour, Gary Cole and actress Laurie Metcalf rounded out the main voice cast for the series.

Rogers first revealed news of the show’s cancellation in May during a guest host appearance on the “Attitudes!” podcast, also sharing that he recorded his lines in a closet during the Covid-19 lockdowns. And while the show didn’t attract rave reviews from critics, Rogers praised its cult fanbase and spoke briefly on the show’s legacy during the same podcast.

“The people that loved it really loved it, and the good news is that it will always be on Netflix,” Rogers said.

Q-Force‘s mission has ended early at Netflix. The animated comedy will not return for a second season, TVLine has confirmed.

News of Q-Force‘s cancellation was first spoken aloud in May when writer/cast member Matt Rogers guest-hosted an episode of the Attitudes! podcast.

Both Pascal and Harbour will executive produce in addition to starring. Steve Conrad will write and executive produce in addition to directing the pilot. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists will also executive produce along with Bruce Terris, Molly Allen, James Lasdun, and MGM Television. Taylor Latham of Escape Artists will co-executive produce.

Applications for The Disruptors, the annual fellowship for emerging television writers of color who identify as either trans, gender nonbinary, undocumented / formerly undocumented, or disabled, are now open for the 2022 program season.

Taking place from August – November this year, The Disruptors will offer mentorship, compensation, community, and a virtual and in-person space, when it is safe to do so, for fellows to create the materials they need to enter the industry.

According to the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at the University of Southern California, 91 percent of television show creators are white, and 81 percent are men. The Disruptors began in 2020 to shift this landscape to include creatives of color from different backgrounds and to normalize narratives that have historically been underrepresented in television, starting with investing in these screenwriters from the very beginning of their careers.

“Dope Queens,” a new indie film celebrating San Francisco’s famed Tenderloin neighborhood, has set its lead cast.

Alexandra Grey, Pierson Fodé and Trace Lysette (“Hustlers”) will star in the project from writer-director Grafton Doyle.

Described as a romantic thriller, the film will follow three friends — Goldie (Grey), Blake (Fodé), and Angel (Lysette) — over the course of a wild night on the famously gritty streets of the Tenderloin. The area is regarded as the world’s first legally recognized transgender district. Supporting cast includes “RuPaul’s Drag Race” stars Kylie Sonique Love and Krystal Thomas.

A semi-autobiographical tale, the film is produced by Julio Lopez Velazquez (“Buck Run”) and John Reyes Doyle (“On Our Way”) via Tomorrowland Productions. Co-producing are Eugene Koh (“Feeling Through”) and Giulianno Lopez.

The Netflix animated series Q-Force is extraordinary for any number of reasons, including its similarities to Archer, one of the most popular adult animated comedies currently on television. It is also notable for not only putting LGBTQ+ characters at the center of its story but also for using those characters to explore issues of interest to this community.

The members of this elite group of spies struggle to gain the appreciation of the higher-ups in the organization known as the American Intelligence Agency, even as they also have to contend with the group’s sinister history when it comes to its LGBTQ+ members. Q-Force is also like Archer in that it has some great and very funny characters, which makes fans wonder who is the best of such a diverse and fascinating cast of animated characters.

Fall has officially begun and with it comes the arrival of pumpkin spice, changing leaves and Fall TV. If quality were measured in good intentions, “Q-Force” might be the show of the year.

Netflix’s new animated series sets out to tell a James Bond-style espionage tale about a gay man, Steve Maryweather (Sean Hayes), who’s been marginalized from a fictionalized version of the CIA — here called the Aia — due to his sexuality. After years of isolation in the West Hollywood station thanks to a homophobic agency chief (Gary Cole), Steve gets vouched for by a mentor (Laurie Metcalf) and ends up taking his group of queer spies around the world. He fights both to protect the planet from evildoers and to make room in the tradecraft complex for queer people.

The show, created by prolific TV writer Gabe Liedman, toggles back and forth between heightened and grounded sensibilities. It attempts both to dazzle with self-consciously over-the-top spyjinks and to comment on the power of queer communities.

Fall is almost here, which makes it the perfect time to cozy up on the couch with a blanket, pumpkin spice latte and some Netflix. Luckily, the streaming service just released its list of everything coming to the platform this September. Fans will be excited to see some of their favorite shows on the lineup. From reality competitions like Nailed It! and The Circle to dramedies like Sex Education and Dear White People, there are a number of programs returning with new seasons. And if viewers are feeling nostalgic for the '90s, they can binge-watch the original Saved by the Bell. Of course, there are several new shows coming to Netflix, too—like Q-Force and The Chestnut Man. And don't forget...

Here’s some news that might just make you blue — in a good way! Nickelodeon is bringing back The Smurfs in a new CG-animated series, premiering Friday, Sept. 10 at 7:30/6:30c.

The show — which marks the beloved characters’ return to TV for the first time in nearly 40 years — “follows Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Hefty, Clumsy and the other inhabitants of Smurf Village on all-new adventures, packed with humor, heart and high-stakes action,” reads the official synopsis. In the first episode, Smurfette rescues Brainy from a giant snake, and the other Smurfs ask her to teach them Smurf-Fu.

Ah, progress. The fight for LGBTQ+ rights has led to same sex marriage, anti-discrimination laws, the repeal of the trans military ban, and finally — gay superheroes. Now we can rest easy knowing queer people have their very own animated Netflix series. Created by Gabe Liedman, writer on “Pen15” and Jenny Slate’s former comedy partner, “Q-Force” follows a group of misfit intelligence agents who take matters into their own hands when the higher ups try to bury their gays. The first teaser for the animated comedy inspired major side-eye from queer social media users, and now Netflix is throwing a full official trailer to the wolves.

Here’s the official synopsis, per Netflix:

“Steve Maryweather, Aka Agent Mary, was once the Golden Boy of the American Intelligence Agency (Aia), until he came out as gay. Unable to fire him, the Agency sent him off to West Hollywood to disappear into obscurity.

Netflix released a trailer for “Q-Force,” an animated series starring Sean Hayes, Gary Cole, David Harbour, Patti Harrison, Laurie Metcalf, Matt Rogers, Wanda Sykes and Gabe Liedman that launches Sept. 2.

“Q-Force” follows Steve Mayweather, Aka Agent Mary (voiced by Hayes), who was once the leader of the American Intelligence Agency (Aia) until he came out as gay. The Agency was not able to fire him on the basis of his sexual orientation, so they sent him to West Hollywood to disappear into obscurity. Instead, Steve put together a rag-tag group of LGBTQ geniuses, joining forces with the expert mechanic Deb (Sykes), master of drag and disguise Twink Rogers), and hacker Stat (Harrison), making the “Q-Force” squad.

“Q-Force” is created by Liedman, who executive produces alongside Hayes, Todd Milliner, Ben Heins, Mike Schur and David Miner.

Showtime has renewed “Couples Therapy” for a two-part third season next year. The docuseries from Josh Kriegman, Elyse Steinberg and Eli Despres follows psychoanalyst Dr. Orna Guralnik as she helps real-life couples in real-life therapy sessions. There will be fresh sets of couples in each installment of Season 3.

“Couples Therapy” is produced by Edgeline Films for Showtime. Kriegman, Steinberg and Despres executive produce, while Carly Hugo and Matt Parker serve as producers. Season 2 just wrapped on Showtime.
