‘White With Fear’ Documentary Sets June On-Demand Release Date (Exclusive)
Image
Director Andrew Goldberg’s political documentary “White With Fear,” featuring interviews with Hillary Clinton, Steve Bannon and more has set an on-demand release date of June 3, Variety can exclusively reveal.

Providing rare first-person access to notable figures like Clinton and former Fox News reporter Carl Cameron, the documentary explores the decades-long strategy employed by conservative politicians “to amplify racial divisions and white victimization narratives for power and profit,” according to an official synopsis. The documentary also explores how these tactics aim to hurt immigrants and spread Islamophobia around the world.

Additional interviews feature former Trump campaign strategist Rick Gates, former Trump campaign CEO and chief strategist Bannon, The Lincoln Project co-founder Stuart Stevens, New York Times opinion writer Jean Guerrero, “Dog Whistle Politics” author Ian Haney López and former Jeb Bush campaign communications director Tim Miller. Lizzy Caplan A24 Crisis PR Drama Series Lands at Netflix
Image
Lizzy Caplan and A24’s new crisis PR drama series has landed at Netflix, TheWrap has learned.

After a competitive bidding situation, Netflix has acquired the rights to the untitled project, and the series is currently in development at the streamer, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.

Based on the viral New York Magazine article “Get Me Risa Heller!” the new series will star Caplan as New York’s premiere crisis PR fixer, who “helps high-profile clients navigate the worst days of their lives while striving to maintain her own image as a happily married mother of three without any crises of her own to hide,” per the official synopsis.

Halley Feiffer, who most recently served as showrunner for “American Horror Story: Delicate,” will write and showrun for the series, which is produced by A24. In “AHS: Delicate,” Kim Kardashian starred as PR maven Siobhan Corbyn, who carefully curated the...

15 Best Movies Like The Big Short
Image
As the United States inches closer and closer toward a tipping point into class warfare, we can't help but think back to "The Big Short." Based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Michael Lewis, Adam McKay's irreverent spin on the events leading up to the 2008 financial crisis was already a much-needed wake up call for the culture when it premiered at AFI Fest in 2015. Now, nearly a decade later, it remains an incisive interrogation of the corporate corruption we see screwing over average consumers every day. Though finance bio-dramas are far from novel, McKay's film stands out as fuel to a fire of postmodern disillusionment that many films have since tried replicating without precisely duplicating.

In commemoration of its upcoming 10th anniversary, here are 15 more films that will help deepen your appreciation for McKay's darkly comic cautionary tale, from further investigations into the 2008 recession to...

The Best Movie About Wall Street, According To IMDb
Image
A sudden, severe global stock market crash shook the world of finance on October 19, 1987. Dubbed Black Monday, the crash caused widespread anxiety due to fears of unmitigable economic instability, even among those not well-versed with the nitty-gritties of finance. Soon after, "Wall Street" made its way into theaters and enlightened us regarding the lure of the stock market, along with the risks that lurked beneath its glamorous facade. This fictional depiction of 1980s Wall Street, right after the real-world crisis that frightened and baffled many, led to the inception of a fresh new genre. The finance film, which usually explores various facets of Wall Street culture, was born.

Many finance films managed to make a mark over the years, including 2015's "The Big Short" (which attempts to shed light on the early days of the 2008 financial crisis) and 2010's scathing documentary film, "Inside Job." If we aren't being too rigid...

Animation Guild Faces Discontent on Artificial Intelligence Terms in New Contract
Image
The Animation Guild has unveiled the full terms of its new contract with the major studios, along with a candid explanation as to why it could not do more to protect against artificial intelligence.

The union, which represents about 5,000 animators, technicians and writers, reached a tentative agreement on Nov. 23, after three months of bargaining. The deal includes certain guardrails around AI, but does not allow animators to opt out of using it if their job requires it, nor can they prevent their work from being used to “train” AI models.

After the memorandum of agreement was published Tuesday night, some members expressed discontent with the deal. Shion Takeuchi, creator of the Netflix show “Inside Job,” argued there are “no substantive protections” against AI.

“In this Moa there is nothing to stop the studios from gutting the staff,” she said via text. “We are chattel to them.”

The agreement also does...

The 15 Best Female Characters in The Boys, Ranked
Image
The Boys reached its fourth season with an ever-growing fan base. According to Forbes, the show's viewership is up 21% at the moment. This makes it the second-biggest returning season on Amazon Prime after Reacher Season 2. Although very promising characters like Sage and Firecracker were introduced in Season 4, other female protagonists have been being developed since Season 1 and are consequently better written so far.

The Boys Season 3 brought some interesting developments from Seasons 1 and 2, including a mind-blowing flashback focused on one of the best female characters in the show. Grace Mallory's encounter with Soldier Boy's Payback Team in Nicaragua added depth to her heroic persona. Ranking the best-written female characters in the show from the least to the most compelling, even characters that don't have a lot of screen time stand out for often stealing the scene and impacting the narrative as a whole. For example, Cherie has a strong...

The Best Movie About Wall Street Is Not, in Fact, 'Wall Street'
Image
As with many aspects of reality, Wall Street has been fundamentally romanticized in how it has been depicted on screen in Hollywood productions. Films like The Wolf of Wall Street and American Psycho may attempt to be more critical in their analysis of the insidious ways in which capitalism takes advantage of vulnerable people, but Hollywood is still guilty of depicting a version of Wall Street that is much more fantastical than the hard truths seem to suggest. Many of these more innocent depictions of Wall Street have felt even less relevant in the wake of the 2008 financial crash, in which evidence pointed to years of fraud and corruption on the part of stockbrokers. Although there have been many attempts to cope with these revelations in fictional films, the Academy Award-winning documentary Inside Job offered a comprehensive look at the origin of the 2008 financial collapse.

Fans React to Kaos Cancellation and Predict Grim Future for Netflix Shows - Main Image

It’s barely been a month since the release of Kaos on Netflix, but word is already going around that the show has been cancelled just after one season.

With some fans hoping that the series would have been given time to find its audience, reactions are now coming out online for Netflix—and honestly, every streaming platform—canceling projects before they’re given any time to grow.

Netflix Cancellations Galore

Following the announcement that Kaos has been canceled, Twitter has been filled with all of these comments about Netflix’s recent practice of canceling shows when they don’t meet the level of hype that’s expected of properties like Stranger Things and Squid Game.

10 Best Animated Sci-Fi Comedy TV Shows
Image
Animation has always been a great medium to explore the boundless potential of sci-fi stories, and there are plenty of comedy shows which seize the freedom of animation. Animation and sci-fi go hand-in-hand, since both are interested in that which can't be ordinarily depicted using Earthly means. Animated sci-fi comedies have the opportunity of using the entire universe as their setting.

Ever since The Jetsons premiered in the 1960s, there have been animated sci-fi comedies, although most of these were targeted toward children. The arrival of Futurama in 1999 was a massive game-changer. After The Simpsons ushered in a new dawn for adult-oriented animated comedy, Futurama set the tone for sci-fi comedies. Since then, the 21st century has seen a boom in animated sci-fi comedies, with new classics such as Rick and Morty pushing the genre forward.

2025 Oscar Predictions: Best Documentary Feature
Image
Predicting the winner of the Best Documentary Feature Oscar becomes a lot easier on December 17 when the academy announces the 15 films that make the shortlist. Those semi-finalists will be culled from the more than 100 titles that qualified this year for consideration. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Documentary Feature.)

To winnow those down to a manageable number, the academy adds newly eligible documentary feature to a virtual screening room available to all 500-plus members of the documentary branch. While all members are encouraged to watch as many of these as they can, one-fifth of the voters are assigned each title. Each branch member will submit a preferential ballot listing their top 15 choices.

All of these ballots are collated to determine the 15 semi-finalists. Branch members are then encouraged to watch films on that list which they haven’t seen yet before casting another preferential ballot with their top five choices.

The Kid In All of Us: Demand for Adult Animation Is On a Roll
Image
If you thought you left cartoons behind with your childhood, most major streaming platforms might have a thing or two to say about that.

Quietly, deliberately, one animated series after another is becoming the next big offering, whether it’s Netflix’s Castlevania and Arcane series or Prime’s The Legend of Vox Machina.

From a distance, Bojack Horseman seems like a bizarre Indie cartoon straight out of left field.

(Courtesy of Netflix)

However, it has remained above 90% throughout the six seasons in critical and audience reviews. How’s that for a horse that walks on two legs and carries on conversations?

As it turns out, high-quality, well-written animated shows are a boon for streaming platforms. This is especially true, considering 60% of adults between 18 and 49 watch them.

Not bad. With the increase in video game adaptations, some of which are becoming animated narratives, the kid in you has every reason to celebrate.

Clive Owen Says David Bowie ‘Has More to Do With Me Being an Actor’ Than Anyone Else: ‘He Showed Me You Can Create Worlds’
Image
Clive Owen has not forgotten his roots. Growing up in a working-class family in Coventry in the 1970s U.K., he yearned to explore different roles in life — and the youth wing of the city’s civic Belgrade Theatre gave him that opportunity.

More than four decades later, Owen — who most recently appeared in “Monsieur Spade” as an aging Sam Spade drawn back into the game to solve a post-World War II murder mystery in the south of France — credits that experience as the foundation for his career.

“That is where it all started for me — joining the youth theater was a life changer for me,” he tells Variety at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where he receives the President’s Award Saturday night. “The city is still a very tough one, and places like the youth theater are a lifeline for kids like me to...

“In any other city there’s no guest list as big as the one that we have when we’re in Seattle,” Vedder said in introducing the song. “To be honest, I wish it were longer. 15 Most Shocking TV Show Cancellations In 2023 (& Why)
Image
Successful TV shows like Gossip Girl reboot and Shadow and Bone were canceled due to financial reasons and declining viewership, leaving fans confused and disappointed. Lockwood & Co and Inside Job garnered good ratings and critical acclaim, but were canceled due to viewership numbers and decision reversals by Netflix. Big Mouth and Sex Education had natural conclusions and ended on their own terms, with the creators feeling satisfied with the stories and characters they had developed over the course of the show.

2023 has been a year that has featured some amazing TV shows and, unfortunately, shocking cancelations, too. Some beloved TV shows have been left behind despite their popularity with viewers or the critical acclaim they have amassed. Production companies are often under fire when a beloved TV show is canceled for what might seem like unfair reasons. However, production companies are after all a business, and if a show...

The Canceled Netflix Series Fans Desperately Tried To Save
Image
In a world replete with quick-spreading disinformation and the subsequent, dangerous proliferation of kooky conspiracy theories, the 2021 animated series "Inside Job" — created by Shion Takeuchi (a writer on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment") — was perfectly timed. "Inside Job" posited that every single conspiracy theory you've ever heard — whether it be Reptilians, JFK, the Mandela effect, the flat Earth, or the faked moon landing — were all 100 percent real. Clones were out there, severed heads were being kept alive in labs, and aliens regularly visited Earth. Just like in "The X-Files," ordinary citizens weren't allowed access to this knowledge.

Earth's conspiracies were overseen by a mysterious underground organization called Cognito, Inc., one of six major shadow governments secretly in charge of the world. The other five were the Catholic Church, the Illuminati, Atlantis, the Reptoids, and the Juggalos (tee hee). The central joke of "Inside Job" was that Cognito, Inc. was staffed by flawed,...

‘Shadow & Bone,’ ‘Glamorous,’ ‘Agent Elvis’ Among 5 Shows Canceled at Netflix
Image
“Shadow and Bone” and “Glamorous,” along with adult animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall” will not be returning for new seasons at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.

The announcement comes as Hollywood streamers and broadcasters continue to assess the impact left by the work stoppages due to the months-long WGA and SAG-Aftra strikes. Sources say Netflix’s decision to cancel stemmed from various reasons including performance and impact from the strike — as the industry evaluates production schedules, scheduling shifts, etc.

As Netflix has said about previous cancellations, the streamer continues to look at viewing versus cost as it evaluates shows. In the case of series like “Agent Elvis,” “Glamorous,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall,” each show only ran for one season before its cancellation. While “Shadow and Bone” received a cancellation after running its second season, which arrived on the streamer in March.

Based on the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo’s,...

5 Netflix Animated TV Shows Canceled Way Too Early
Image
Netflix's cancelation of animated TV shows, such as The Midnight Gospel and Q-Force, highlights the reality that even successful shows may be axed after only one or two seasons, leaving important stories and representation incomplete. The portrayal of adult friendships, anxiety, and universal struggles in shows like Tuca & Bertie resonates with many viewers, and the abrupt cancelation of this show indicates that Netflix may have let go of an important lesson too soon. Inside Job provides an entertaining exploration of human thought and conflict through its focus on conspiracy theories, and the cancelation of a second season means that the unresolved plot points and potential for personal growth in a cynical environment will not be explored further.

Although Netflix's canceled shows range in genre, the animated TV shows seem to see the boot increasingly more frequently, some earlier than they should. After a 200,000 subscriber drop in 2022, Netflix tightened its purse strings,...

Why Netflix Cancels So Many Animated TV Shows (& Why It's A Problem)
Image
Netflix cancels many animated shows due to poor ratings and financial concerns, which is problematic for fans who want to see the story continue. The cancelation of animated shows limits creativity and removes the freedom that animation offers as an art form, hindering future storytelling potential. Other successful animated shows, like Steven Universe, demonstrate how Netflix is missing the opportunity to build fandoms and potential franchises by not giving shows enough time to resonate with audiences.

Netflix cancels a lot of shows in general, but the reason why so many of the streamer's animated series get canceled is worth exploring since it's actually a problematic trend. Poor ratings or financially taxing projects can often lead to cancelations, whether it's after one season on Netflix or before the show has even premiered. Animation seems to get the ax more often, though, and there's a specific reason for that.

Although Netflix has a hefty catalog for viewers,...

10 Sitcoms That Deserved a Proper Finale
Image
Sitcoms are the heart of television. These lighthearted, relatable, and iconic series usually become people's comfort shows and general cultural staples. However, as great as sitcoms tend to be, it's always hard to give them a proper conclusion, as audiences always have big expectations for these finales.

While some sitcoms have the perfect finales, such as Friends or The Office, others don't manage to conclude their stories in such a graceful manner. This often happens when networks extend their shows past their natural conclusions, the series gets canceled, or writers simply think too out of the box.

Inside Job Was Left on a Cliffhanger 2021-2022, 2 Seasons, 18 Episodes

One of the many Netflix cancelations, Inside Job's unfinished story particularly outraged the fans as it was left on a cliffhanger. The show follows Reagan as she works in the shady corporation, Cognito, Inc., in a world where most famous conspiracy theories are real.

TV’s Most Popular Adult Animated Shows Premiered at Least 10 Years Ago | Charts
Image
“Rick and Morty.” “Futurama.” “South Park.” ”Bob’s Burgers.” “Archer.” “The Simpsons.” “Family Guy.” “American Dad!”

What do these shows have in common? For one thing, they’re the Top 8 most popular adult animated comedies, according to a Ranker list that’s been voted on by 50,000 TV fans. But the shows also all premiered at least 10 years ago — and as of the writing of this article, they’re all still on the air. (“Archer” will officially conclude with a special finale event in December.)

The story of adult animated comedy arguably begins with the runaway success of “The Simpsons,” which premiered back in 1989. Since then, each successive decade has brought with it a crop of new and seemingly inexhaustible cartoon series, from “The Simpsons” and “South Park” in the 1990s, to “Family Guy” and “Futurama” in the 2000s, to “Bob’s Burgers” and “Rick and Morty” in the 2010s. But the last...

10 TV Shows Canceled Just As They Got Good
Image
TV shows canceled just as they got good are casualties of the often unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry. Poor ratings, excessive budgets, and misguided studio execs aren't the only reasons why shows that were just getting good suddenly got canceled. Sometimes, series creators, writers, directors, and actors play their part in untimely cancelations as well.

Indeed, shows that were canceled before their time are all too common in broadcasting and streaming history. It's just the nature of the business - plenty of factors need to align for a show to even get produced. When one or two of those factors get derailed, it becomes very difficult to keep a show going, even when the stories or characters were just about to get much more interesting. Here are 10 TV shows that got canceled just as they got good.

HBO's Watchmen served as a compelling sequel to the beloved DC comic book series.

Disenchantment: What Needs to Happen in the Final Season
Image
It almost feels surreal to think that Disenchantment is coming to a close. Debuting in 2018, Disenchantment was, at one point, an exciting Netflix original powered by the likes of Matt Groening and former Simpsons showrunners Josh Weinstein and Bill Oakley. But as the years have gone by, this fantastical animated series has seemingly come and went with every new season, maintaining a small, if not devoted, fan base. While this would normally be a death sentence for a Netflix show, especially after the premature cancelation of Inside Job, September 1 will see the story of Bean, Elfo, and Luci finally come to a definitive end instead of being shoveled off into oblivion.

But on the opposite side, Disenchantment's final season has some lofty shoes to fill. Being a serialized story, Disenchantment's pacing has left much to be desired, frequently introducing new concepts and ideas but never capitalizing on them.

Why Can’t Documentaries Get Respect at Cannes?
Image
Every year, the Cannes Film Festival program yields its riches. And every year, documentaries are kept to the selection sidebars, with the exception of just three over the years, two of which won the Palme d’Or: “The Silent World,” co-directed by Jacques Cousteau and Louis Malle in 1956, and Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11” in 2004.

This year, out of 16 documentaries in the Official Selection, two are in the Competition, the first time nonfiction titles have joined that storied roster since Moore’s inclusion.

This is progress, but a quick glance at the latest Palme d’Or predictions reveals that Wang Bing’s “Youth” (marking the first 3.5-hours of an eventual 10-hour triptych) and “Olfa’s Daughters” from Kaouther Ben Hania are not high on the list of likely winners. Both are recognized by critics as boundary-pushing examples of the form but seem unlikely to become consensus award picks from Ruben Östlund’s eclectic Competition jury.

The masterpiece of series creator Shion Takeuchi, Inside Job imagines almost every existing conspiracy theory coming to life, with a focus on the shadowy elites that actually control the world. First streamed on Netflix in 2021, Inside Job had a total of 18 episodes - released in two parts - before it was canceled completely in 2023.

Despite Netflix initially renewing the show for a second season with 20 more episodes, the final verdict is that Inside Job has been canceled. Considering how well Inside Job was received by both audiences and critics - and how the demand for a second season remains high - it was a strange decision for Netflix.
