David's Grandfather is called Joseph Brodsky. Early on in the movie, looking at old photographs, he says: "memory is no substitute for love". His namesake, the 1987 Nobel laureate poet Joseph Brodsky, is quoted as writing: "If there is any substitute for love, it is memory."
