And these characters weren’t written to play just bad, they were born to mess you up in a good way. Sure, you must have definitely paused a Tarantino movie to say, “Wait, did they really just do that?” If yes, then welcome to the club.

Now, with his infamous “10 movies and I’m out” retirement plan looming like a final chapter, fans are doing the math: how much has the man actually earned from his iconic (and often insane) filmography? Spoiler alert, it’s a lot more than just royalties and Red Apple cigarette profits. Let’s break it down.

Image
Who is the moat badass actor according to Quentin Tarantino? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Quentin Tarantino, the guy known for turning everyday actors into pop-culture icons went old-school with his pick, and the answer was peak Tarantino.

During a candid sit-down on the El Rey Network, Tarantino answered a question from fellow filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. The Oscar-winning Pulp Fiction mastermind had plenty of choices, but his response was instant:

“There’s a lot of guys you can say, but I have to say right now, I’m, in particular, the last few years, I’ve been on a real Lee Van Cleef kick,” he said. “I mean, I really wish I could have worked with Lee Van Cleef in that ’69, ’70 time period. I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed this, but Lee Van Cleef is a dead ringer for Snoop Dogg. They look exactly alike. Like as if...

Quentin Tarantino Nearly Took Steve Buscemi’s Iconic Reservoir Dogs Role Until One Audition Changed Everything!
Image
Did Steve Buscemi almost take the Iconic Reservoir Dogs Role? (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)

Quentin Tarantino nearly stepped into a very different pair of shoes in Reservoir Dogs and had it not been for one absolutely killer audition, the entire film might have looked a little different.

Now, Tarantino isn’t just any director, he’s Hollywood’s mad genius, the mind behind Pulp Fiction, the Kill Bill saga, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and a whole blood-soaked parade of cult classics.

If you consider yourself a true Tarantino fan, you would probably know by now that there’s one thing he loves almost as much as crafting razor-sharp dialogue and unforgettable violence – that’s sneaking himself into the frame. He’s done it in Inglourious Basterds, Death Proof, and, of course, Reservoir Dogs, where he played the ill-fated Mr. Brown.

‘Grindhouse’ Apparel from Gutter Garbs Includes ‘Planet Terror’ & ‘Death Proof’ Designs
Image
One of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century, Grindhouse spawned several spin-off movies in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies in its wake.

Now the 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has received a new collection of apparel form Gutter Garbs.

Sam Coyne created appropriately retro-style designs for both Robert Rodriguez‘s Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino‘s Death Proof.

The line also includes three other designs: Dr. Dakota Block from Planet Terror, the Death Proof key art, and Stuntman Mike’s emblem from Death Proof.

T-shirts start at $32 with Comfort Colors tees for $34. A “Double Feature” 24×18 poster featuring a mash-up of Coyne’s designs is also avaialble for $40.

Pre-orders are open through Thursday, March 13, and will ship the week of March 30.

Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodriguez, Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, Josh Brolin, and Marley Shelton star in Planet Terror.

Why Kurt Russell Channeled John Wayne For A Beloved Cult Classic
Image
John Carpenter's 1986 action-comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is a pretty strange movie that has earned a special place in the hearts of fans as a cult classic. In it, truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) becomes entangled in a battle against ancient evil with his friend and pseudo-sidekick, Wang Chi (Dennis Dun). Instead of being an all-out action hero, however, Jack is actually really kind of Wang Chi's sidekick, cracking wise and getting the girl but never doing much in the way of fighting. He's an all-American hero archetype despite this, and apparently, it's at least partially because Russell was channeling Western movie legend John Wayne.

In his interview book, "John Carpenter: Prince Of Darkness," Carpenter explained that he and Russell decided that he should play the character like the famous Western actor because Wayne had a certain kind of "blowhard" attitude that worked perfectly. By playing Jack Burton...

Why Sylvester Stallone Turned Down Quentin Tarantino Twice
Image
Sylvester Stallone has starred in some great movies, but like any Hollywood mainstay, he's also been in a few stinkers. One time, Arnold Schwarzenegger actually trolled Stallone into starring in a major flop, so it's fair to say that the "Rocky" star has made some questionable career choices. With that in mind, one would think that he'd jump at the chance to work with an acclaimed director like Quentin Tarantino, whose movies often result in their stars winning awards. However, the "Rambo" veteran hasn't been interested in teaming up with the filmmaker when roles have been offered to him in the past.

While speaking to McClean's in 2012, Stallone revealed that he turned down the roles of Louis Gara and "Stuntman" Mike McKay in "Jackie Brown" and "Death Proof," respectively. He also noted that the latter project didn't sit right with him at the time, seeing as he didn't want...

Sophia Takal in Gabi on the Roof in July (2010)
Everything’s Coming Up Carrie!

January proved to be a busy, varied month on Horror Queers. We kicked off 2025 with a look at Sophia Takal’s examination of toxic friendships in Into the Dark: “New Year, New You” (listen), tackled Quentin Tarantino’s half of the Grindhouse double feature with Death Proof (listen), revisited George Waggner’s 1941 classic The Wolf Man (listen), then begged for Aylmer’s juice in Frank Henenlotter’s Brain Damage (listen).

To wrap up January, we’re taking Carrie White to prom in Brian De Palma‘s adaptation of Stephen King‘s debut novel, Carrie. This 'Rotten' 9-Year-Old Mystery Movie Has 1 of the Wildest Behind-the-Scenes Stories of All Time
Image
It takes years to release a movie, from development to script writing, to production, to post-production, all the way to marketing and distribution. With so many steps in the process, there are bound to be some hiccups along the way. A good portion of filmmaking is simply decision-making. Directors and producers are put in a position where they need to be quick, definitive, and right, and part of being a good leader is knowing when to delegate. The more a director delegates, the larger the crew is, and the higher chance there is for crazy behind-the-scenes stories to come out. There are, of course, famous leaked stories about incredible stunts and set pieces, like in The Dark Knight, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, or Death Proof, and harrowing behind-the-scenes incidents like The Crow, Rust, and Deadpool 2, but even low-budget indie movies have their fair share of behind-the-scenes drama. Some of...

All 5 Crime Movies Directed by Quentin Tarantino, Ranked
Image
Quentin Tarantino makes films that are distinctly his own, largely by taking influence from so many different sources and blending them into unique cinematic smoothies. He clearly showed an appreciation for Westerns long before making any film that could specifically be called a Western. His love of grindhouse cinema can be found most obviously in Death Proof, he put his own spin on the war genre with Inglourious Basterds, and then he made a hangout/dramedy/alternate history film with the relaxed and effortlessly cool Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Kurt Russell Once Revealed His 3 Most Underrated Movies
Image
Kurt Russell sure has an illustrious career. We've seen him play a living planet, Wyatt Earp, Santa Claus, and (depending on whether you stand with MacReady or Childs in "The Thing") the killer of a shape-shifting alien. This guy has done it all and more, which makes it understandable that there are so many favorites to choose from. Ask the man himself, though, and there's a trio of Kurt Russell gems that he thinks were massively overlooked.

The big three were selected during an interview with FilmInk when the actor was promoting "The Hateful Eight." After the eight-year gap between his then-fresh new collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, the duo's first pairing was just starting to get some love, as well. "I'm beginning to have people come up to me, now, and say, 'I just saw 'Death Proof'; that was great,'" recalled Russell. The film, which was part...

The Quentin Tarantino Movie That You Probably Forgot Bruce Willis Cameoed In
Image
After the collapse of the studio system, when actors were finally given more autonomy regarding their careers and were much more free to choose the types of roles and films they'd appear in, the true test of an actor became what happened when and if they reached megastardom. Some stars love the limelight so much that they try and give their public what it is they think they want to see over and over again, and can find themselves feeling burned out or too typecast in the process. Others become much more reclusive, either outright refusing easy paycheck jobs or being extremely picky about their projects. Then there are those stars who manage to straddle the line between the commercial and artistic sides of their vocation, and are able to spin their newfound clout into a mixture of roles that demonstrate not only their range, but also their creative curiosity.

The Forgotten Kurt Russell Movie With The Lowest Audience Score On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
In a remarkable career spanning over 60 years, Kurt Russell has just about done it all. He's been a Disney child star, an action hero, a serious dramatic actor, an unabashedly silly comedic lead, and Elvis Presley. Though Russell was never a box office titan on par with contemporaries like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis, he is worshipped as a god by genre fandom for having played such iconic s***kickers as Snake Plissken in "Escape from New York," R.J. MacReady in "The Thing" and Jack Burton in "Big Trouble in Little China." Those last two were flops theatrically, but they've gone from being cult favorites to bona-fide mainstream classics. As a result, Russell, at the age of 73, might be more beloved now than he's ever been.

For Russell fanatics, there's a lively discussion to be had over what his best performance outside of that aforementioned holy trinity of John Carpenter movies might be.

Netflix & Kurt Russell’s Festive Comedy 'The Christmas Chronicles' Climbs the Charts
Image
Acclaimed actor and action star Kurt Russell, star of such cinematic classics as The Thing, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, the Fast and Furious movies, Death Proof, the MCU, and much, much more, evidently makes a crowd-pleasing Santa Claus as his Christmas Netflix outing has now made its way into the top 10. Released in 2018, The Christmas Chronicles stars Russell as a gruff, but no less magical, version of Santa, who must save the festive season with the help of a couple of kids after his souped-up sleigh is wrecked.

Directed by Clay Kaytis from a screenplay by Matt Lieberman, and produced by the director behind Home Alone and Harry Potter, Chris Columbus, The Christmas Chronicles was met with solid reviews upon release and now sits at #9 in the Netflix top 10 behind the likes of the controversial religious saga Mary, the animated outing That Christmas, and the Christmas action movie Carry-On.

‘Not an Artist’ Trailer: Haley Joel Osment Joins RZA’s Cult of Creatives

There’s meta and then there’s meta meta.

The latest indie feature from director/actress Alexi Pappas mocks the very idea of creating…well, anything. Pappas and Jeremy Teicher helm “Not An Artist” from a script they co-wrote with “Veep” alum Matt Walsh, who also stars.

“Not An Artist” centers on a artist-in-residency program overseen by an enigmatic patron (RZA) who may or may not be a cult leader. Per the official synopsis, the film follows “artists in turmoil who face a make-or-break ultimatum: unlock their full creative potential or abandon art forever. Yet, the unexpected intrusion of an outsider (Walsh) jeopardizes the program’s delicate balance.”

Haley Joel Osment, Rosalind Chao, Cleopatra Coleman, Paul Lieberstein, and Robert Schwartzman, whose Utopia is releasing the film, also star. Schwartzman founded Utopia in 2019, and has distributed films such as “Divinity” and “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair,” and contributed marketing...

“Whenever agents treat me like that, I pull the plug”: The Iron Man Star Quentin Tarantino Refused to Cast in His 2007 Movie That Was a $30M Bomb
Image
Quentin Tarantino’s never been one to mince words or compromise on his vision, even if it meant shutting the door on a Hollywood A-lister. Back in 2007, the legendary filmmaker had his sights set on a wild $30M passion project. But when one Iron Man star’s agent started playing hardball, Tarantino wasn’t having it. The auteur famously walked away from casting them altogether.

Despite Tarantino’s usual flair, the film didn’t quite dazzle at the box office. But his no-nonsense approach to casting proved one thing: he’d rather bomb on his terms than cater to Hollywood politics. Classic Tarantino energy.

Kurt Russell Was Worried Quentin Tarantino Wouldn't Cast Him In Death Proof
Image
It's hard to imagine that Kurt Russell would get anywhere near the vicinity of stressed when it comes to being cast in a film. That being said, when that movie is being helmed by legendary director Quentin Tarantino, even the actor behind Snake Plissken starts to sweat a little. In a 2007 interview with IGN, the star of films like "The Thing," "Escape from New York," and "Tombstone" (only one of the best Westerns of all-time) explained that when it came to getting his gig in "Death Proof," he was already aware of the potential competition he was up against thanks to a call from Freddy Rodriguez.

Russell recalled the "Planet Terror" star telling him, "'I think Quentin's going to come to you with this movie.' He said, 'I think it was supposed to be Mickey Rourke, but I don't think that's happening. And there are some other guys they're talking about.

"Sickest Thing You've Ever Done": Eli Roth Beat Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez For Grossest Grindhouse Scare
Image
Eli Roth’s trampoline scene from Grindhouse stands as one of the anthology’s most infamous moments, and the horror director returns to break down the iconic kill. Released in 2007, Grindhouse is a double feature paying homage to 1970s exploitation cinema, comprised of Quentin Tarantino's slasher Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez's zombie-comedy Planet Terror. The anthology also included faux trailers by prominent horror directors, including Roth’s Thanksgiving, a holiday-themed slasher trailer packed with over-the-top gore and satirical humor.

In a conversation with Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo San Francisco (where Screen Rant was a media partner), Roth revisited Thanksgiving's now-iconic trampoline gag, where a cheerleader doing a split meets a gruesome end on a knife. Roth contended that this scene became the standout gross-out moment in Grindhouse, beating the efforts of his fellow gore directors. Here's what he had to say:

With a career that combines homage to classic cinema with original stories and characters, the director's work continues to resonate with audiences, who flock to theaters to see almost everything he puts out.

Tarantino has one of the best-established track records with both critics and audiences, even if the former is often quick to criticize his use of violence. Making no secret of his love of certain tropes and themes, audiences can reliably count on certain things to happen throughout the course of one of his films. Kurt Russell Starred in Not One, But Two of the Best Modern Westerns in The Same Year
Image
Kurt Russells career renaissance was one of the more delightful and welcome storylines in the film industry during the 2010s. While he rose to stardom in the 80s and early 90s, throughout the 2000s, Russell played mostly smaller roles some that were often the best parts of their films, like in Sky High or took on parts in films that didnt necessarily cross over to the mainstream public, such as his turn in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. However, in 2015, the actor starred in two Westerns back-to-back that showcased his talents and also became two of the most talked about films of the year: Bone Tomahawk and The Hateful Eight.

Quentin Tarantino's Lowest-Rated Movie On Rt Marked A Big Career First (That Improved The Film)
Image
Quentin Tarantinos movies are often controversial due to the amount of violence and blood in them, but one, in particular, wasnt as popular as the rest but it still marked a different career first for Tarantino that made the movie better. After exploring the genre of martial arts with both parts of Kill Bill, Tarantino decided to pay a visit to the slasher genre with Death Proof. In 2007, Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez joined forces in Grindhouse, a double feature project with various short films, Rodriguezs horror movie Planet Terror, and Tarantinos Death Proof.

Death Proof follows Stuntman Mike (Russell Crowe), who goes around bars to bring women to his death-proof car however, once inside, he reveals the car is only death-proof for him, and uses it to kill the women in the passengers seat. One day, he follows three women with the intention of killing them, but they are a...

All Quentin Tarantino Movies, Ranked from Worst to Best
Image
Nobody blends B-movie grit with A-list precision quite like Quentin Tarantino. With razor-sharp dialogue, an unmatched penchant for genre fusion, and whole-lotta feet, it is no wonder Tarantino’s work transformed the indie film scene in the early 90s.

John Travolta (L) and Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction | Credits: Miramax Films

With nine official films (and a last project on the cards), there’s everything here – from visceral revenge tales to character studies. This is our ranking of Tarantino’s films worst to best, in a quaint attempt to celebrate a director whose work remains endlessly cool; nevertheless, fiercely debated.

9. Death Proof (2007)

Death Proof is pure, audacious Tarantino. A tantalizing ode to ’70s B-movie thrills has Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike, a charming psycho who picks off talkative women with his “death-proof” car. While not everyone’s cup of tea, the movie’s stripped-down, no-studio-strings vibe and rapid-fire dialogue are undeniably Qt.

Why Quentin Tarantino Refuses To Watch Denis Villeneuve's Dune Movies
Image
Quentin Tarantino, best known for his supporting turn in "Destiny Turns on the Radio," has never been shy about his taste in movies. Tarantino has long been drawn to aggressively masculine genre films, Westerns, war pictures, martial arts films, and anything one might have seen at a run-down grindhouse theater in 1977. He also likes very terse, tense movies, and has listed Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver," William Friedkin's "Sorcerer," and Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" as his favorites. He's likewise admitted to having fond feelings for "The Great Escape" (who doesn't?) and thinks very highly of Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk." It's easy to guess that he similarly loves "Rio Bravo" and "Apocalypse Now," and he often recommends the Sonny Chiba vehicle "The Street Fighter" from 1974.

Despite his tastes, however, Tarantino remains cinematically omnivorous, taking in hundreds of movies a year, sussing out the pop...

Zo Bells Scrapped Django Unchained Scenes Prove Quentin Tarantino Shouldnt Stop At 10 Movies
Image
Zo Bell had a small role in Django Unchained, and her character's scrapped plot serves as proof that Quentin Tarantino can't stop directing after his 10th movie. Though some of Quentin Tarantino's best movies are also some of the best movies of all time, the director has famously vowed that his 10th film will be his last. Despite his long history of making provacative films, that decision has been one of the most controversial in Tarantino's career. Many have argued that he should ignore his self-imposed rule and continue directing, but one of the most compelling arguments comes from one of his own films.

Tarantino is known for casting actors in multiple films, and Zo Bell is one of his favorites. She's appeared in several of Tarantino's films: Bell did stunts in both Kill Bill volumes and Inglourious Basterds, and she played named characters in Death Proof, Django Unchained,...

Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction Was Almost Made In A Completely Different Format
Image
Everyone knows that "Pulp Fiction," Quentin Tarantino's beloved, acclaimed 1994 ensemble film, is told across a scattered, non-linear narrative where the stories end up linking together in wholly unexpected ways. But apparently, the original idea was quite different.

In a sprawling oral history of the film in Variety commemorating the movie's 30th anniversary, Roger Avary, who co-wrote the story with Tarantino, said there was initially a totally different format for the project. "The original idea for 'Pulp Fiction' was, we're going to make three short films with three different filmmakers. I'm going to make one, Quentin's going to make one and we hit a pal, Adam Rifkin, who was going to make one. I wrote a script called 'Pandemonium Reigns,' and along the way, my little short film expanded into a feature-length script. 'Reservoir Dogs' expanded into a feature-length script. Adam just never wrote his, and 'Pulp...

Now, we've just learned of a potential new cast addition. Scream queen Mary Elizabeth Winstead is reportedly in talks to join the remake, starring opposite Monroe.

Conversations are currently being had about Winstead joining the movie, but she has not officially signed on yet. Michael Keaton Is Completely Right About Quentin Tarantino's Most Underappreciated Movie
Image
The beauty of Quentin Tarantino's filmography is that there is no poor choice regarding your favorite of his work. While Pulp Fiction still holds the most sway among the public, one could feasibly make a case for Death Proof, perhaps his least-seen picture, as his most daring and inspired work. However, Jackie Brown, Tarantino's highly anticipated follow-up to Pulp Fiction, has become a favorite for the cinephilia crowd. Due to its literary roots, fixation on character, and sense of "maturity" on the writer-director's part, Tarantino's homage to Blaxploitation and '70s crime films has become a fashionable film to pick as your favorite. Over 25 years since its release, it has aged as well (if not better) as any Tarantino film. One of the stars of Jackie Brown, Michael Keaton, would agree, calling Tarantino's pulpy and humanist film simply "great."...

Death Proof Features More Kurt Russell Easter Eggs Than You Likely Remember
Image
Writer and director Quentin Tarantino might not have any love lost for his film "Death Proof," which he has famously claimed is his worst, but we here at /Film believe that it's the Tarantino classic we don't talk about enough. There's a lot to love in this half of "Grindhouse," which follows a kind of slasher named Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) who hunts and kills beautiful women using his tricked-out stunt car. There are the wild car chases and incredibly dangerous stunts. There's the killer soundtrack. There are the amazing actors who play the victims and then the queens who get their revenge on Mike. And then, of course, there's Russell himself, who is arguably one of the coolest performers to ever grace the silver screen.

Tarantino is pretty well-known for his homages and references to the films that inspired his work, but he's not above throwing in a few straight-up Easter eggs either.

Kurt Russell's 5 Most Rewatchable Movies, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
There is something universally lovable about Kurt Russell. The actor actually started his career as a way to meet famous baseball players before getting signed on with Walt Disney and becoming a bonafide child star. After a gnarly injury forced him to retire from baseball and pursue acting full-time, he became a prolific performer who manages to make nearly everything he's in better just by his mere presence. From fluffy rom-coms like "Overboard" with future long-term partner Goldie Hawn to intense genre fare like "The Thing" to big blockbuster franchise flicks like "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," Russell is able to fit into the fabric of just about any kind of film. He's incredibly charismatic even when playing antiheroes and downright villains, which makes his movies extremely rewatchable. But which are the most rewatchable?

While some of Russell's movies didn't do well theatrically or critically at the time of release,...

“It’s like a c*me shot when it happens”: Quentin Tarantino Considers His One Movie Scene to be His Absolute Best That He Believes Made Him a Real Cinematic Director
Image
It was the year 2007 when veteran director Quentin Tarantino decided to once again go down the path of violence and slasher films with his movie Death Proof.

Although the film gained acclaim, it was considered Tarantino’s cult-classic film. However, one iconic scene in the film resulted in the director calling it an iconic and cinematic death.

Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof Wasn’t Without Deaths

Starring Kurt Russell in the lead role, Death Proof narrates the story of a psychopathic killer with an American Muscle car by his side who stalks and kills people.

Unfortunately for Julia, Shanna, and Arlene, Kurt Russell’s character of Stuntman Mike is out on a hunt. The film leads to one iconic scene where Russell overtakes the lead’s car, makes a U-turn, and turns his headlights off.
