  • The basic story that unfolds in Horizon is interesting enough, and could have been the basis for an above-average sci-fi flick. Unfortunately the screenwriters did not exhibit similar rigor and creativity when fleshing it out. Plot holes abound, especially towards the end. Lines voiced by actors range from cliched but reasonable, to cliched and awkward, to, in some cases, idiotic. ("Give them hell!" "I intend to" is an instance of both--extremely commonplace-boring, and at the same time, it makes absolutely no sense in context.)

The acting ranged from reasonably good to awkward to cringe-inducing. There were too many fistfighting and gunfighting scenes, going on for far too long. And one or two scenes near the middle added nothing to the story.

I don't regret watching it, but would only recommend it to someone with a taste for B-grade or lower sci-fi.

It doesn't take long before you realize this was once something episodic condensed into a movie. Once you realize that then you get a sense of why it is often disjointed. It changes your mindset and pulls you out from thinking of this as a movie and as a series of episodes. It also explains why we get certain plot elements repeated so as to remind the viewer of something they saw in the last episode as opposed to 5 minutes ago in a movie.

PLOT. We've seen elements of the plot before in other movies and tv shows. There really is nothing especially unique about this. There are some major disconnects that are inexcusable such as the government agents trying to kill two of the characters in a warehouse but without any real explanation, they then want to help them. And I can only assume that the editing process eliminated some connections such as how did Cole come to be with the unconscious sister and why he brought her to the church. Or what happened to the military person who was with Nicole after the grocery store explosion? There is a throw away line about him leaving but we are left with the sense that he imparted wisdom in his 24 hours with them. The plot device with Edward Coleridge was very weak.

But there were many foolish elements to the plot as well.

LOCATION. I don't know Bristol but enjoyed seeing parts of the city and the countryside. We didn't see enough to make me long to visit as I do when I watch some television shows set in certain towns and through the duration of the series - you want to visit.

ACTING. Some acting wasn't very good but I think it was poorer script writing than the acting. But most acting was decent. It is easy for non-actors to criticize actors without realizing that it is not something that comes naturally to everyone. So the fact most of these actors could hold their own was good. I especially liked Kate Speak and would follow her in other roles. I hate to compare actors but she felt in part like a young Diana Rigg. I don't know his name by liked the male actor on the roof in the first part with Katie and others. The guy with the beer bottle. I thought his character was very real. Simon Pengelly played the bad military guy that we've seen in far too many movies but he did it well. I don't think he'll every be a leading man but I can see him as one of those regulars you'd see in war, gangster or invasion types of movie including those with much higher budgets. The actress who played Katie also gave me a sense of a real person. We really never see her again after she cuts her hair but she looks so different, not a young girl anymore, then that it would have been interesting to see her character grow. Initially didn't like the military guy who was with Nicole after the explosion at the grocery store but he wasn't there long but I did like him at the end. I was looking forward to seeing more of him.

CGI/ATMOSPHERE. Overall, for the budget, the CGI wasn't that bad. We have to remember this whole thing was made for a fraction of just one episode of any popular TV series. We only had one scene of the desolation in the city with a lone pigeon on the street and the occasional view of burning buildings. If they wanted to portray a city abandoned then a few more shots like that would have helped. But considering there is no reason for the city to be abandoned and that there would likely be major military presence including fire control then the city should have been in better shape.

SILLY THINGS. I often like to point out some things that really should never have made it into the movie or was missed in editing.

*The panic in the city and the fear to get out of the city before the crowds but we see the car driving to the farm along an empty road that goes on forever. Very pretty but the wrong visual to use esp as they show us another roadway jammed with cars.

*We are to believe the drone ship has sat in what is clearly a well used space and hidden under the smallest amount of debris. He lifts one piece of junk and there is the ship. It's been 200 years. This really was the single dumbest thing in the movie.

*I don't know if it was the same actor but I wasn't going to rewatch to find out but the theft/murderer in the grocery store looks very much like the curator in the museum. So much so that when we first see the latter, I was sure it was the former. Even if they are different actors, they should have cast someone who looked much different. I couldn't tell watching this as a movie - I suspect many thought it as well when watching it as a web series.

*The episode with Steve and Katie tied up was too long and unnecessary. Clearly the actress who played the sister, I think named Sarah, didn't come back and this was the quickest way to write her out of the series. But it could have been a car accident not some nutjob with a gun.

*Also if they were driving to find Stephen and company as they were overdue, then why did they come up behind the car. Shouldn't the car have been facing them?

*At least Independence Day made us understand that the ships were all linked together for the laptop virus to work on everything. In this movie, it was an explosive device that could destroy one ship but why did the sister ship blow up? And if it was so sensitive that it had to be handled careful after being armed, then wouldn't all the electricity going through the ship and the mine set off such a delicate device. Also begs the question if the mine is transported with the ship then is anything else attached to the ship transported too? Loose metal, mouse nest etc.

So overall it wasn't bad to watch. The editing sucks and you'll have to imagine some of the plot linkages. But there are a few actors that are enjoyable to watch but don't expect too much. Considering the budget, the people involved with this should be glad with what they produced.
  • 30,000 pound budget. What do you expect., Star Wars!!

The plot is too much based on dumb people with dumber reactions. Man, I hate stupid, screaming people. Five minutes in and I was rooting for everyone to die... horribly. The CGI... well, just try and ignore the CGI. Was this a "let's use some town budget and make a movie around here" kind of production?

    Yikes
Combine Independence Day with an episode of Doctor Who from the 80's but with a cast where the vast majority doesn't even reach the level of community theater. Special effects were probably made with a free filter on a mobile phone and the action scenes are either very bad (gunfights) or rather good (hand to hand) that go on forever. The really awful thing was the writing. The story made NO sense and the dialogue was appalling. To give you an idea where you are getting yourself into : at a certain point they want us to believe that an EMP was activated while you still see the lights on in the background and they step into a working (modern) car. There's more "sci" in an episode of the Teletubbies. If I hadn't been locked up for the last year with this pandemic, I would have gone for a pint instead. I like to remind myself people worked very hard on these projects so I try to find something positive to write but I couldn't find anything. You have been warned.
  • This "Thing" should be Burned at the BBQ...Everything about it is Rubbish I went into it with Great expectations....What a Waste of time...Do Yourselves a Favour...watch a Mickey Mouse Cartoon instead.... Arrrrrrggggg !!!
  • ... and watched the whole thing in the hope that perhaps the plot took some amazing twist that may have made up for an overall very substandard viewing experience. It didn't.

...even actors can not hide smiles however situation seems to be serious...
  • Lots going on in this one, mates. Lots of subplots and cross references and... blah. Lots of overly hysterical characters, gasping and grasping. No one central character to follow. So, lots of people to not care about. A big old spaceship, but lots of micro-action instead of the big picture. Fairly good fight choreography, but not much else going on. Seen on Tubi, the free streaming site, which has many indies, foreigns, older major studios, and now, live TV.

Don't even bother absolutely terrible! The acting is so poor it make me I'll, it's should be classed as a horror because you will want to spend more time under the covers than watching it. The acting is so poor the girl they try resuscitate is smiling while they are doing it , I honestly think she died form watch poor acting and screaming directly at the camera over and over. The CGI is poor, so is the director of the movie it's all round one of the worst movies I think I have ever watched and it really does give all b movies a bad name, yes most b movies are not brilliant im not expecting avengers type cgi or Anthony Hopkins acting skill, but no movie should be as bad as a simply TV show.
  • What does an alien race want with Bristol? Well that would be a spoiler for this excellent shoestring-budgeted sci-fi production that twists and turns its way through a believable storyline inhabited by characters you want to root for and those whose demise you wouldn't be teary-eyed over. It's smart, it's slick and it keeps you guessing. An excellent example of how small budget doesn't have to result in poor fare.
  • Reading some of the reviews make me wonder what people really expect. OK it's not a Hollywood blockbuster produced by a big studio it was a web series made by a company in Bristol who patched it together and released a movie and considering this whole 2hr movie had a total budget of £30k it's bloody good. I imagine most of the actors and crew would have worked for free and the budget went on the production costs. It's got a good solid story, the acting seemed a bit wooden in the first scene but soon loosened up the further it went on, the story flowed smoothly with plenty of backstory and we even had flashbacks a few hundred years. All in all it's not a bad movie for the very small budget, I'd recommend it to people who like indie movies just don't expect billion dollar budgets!

Oh the British! With their bland diet and blander movies. Stick to making movies about the Crown.

The entire movie is drab, bland and comedic to a fault. The characters are boring, Britain is boring and the movie is thoughtless. I don't know why the Brits even attempt movies other than the Crown or other period pieces! I watched a British horror film that was absolutely dead pan!! LMAO There is nothing scary about the British. Now I absolutely love a brilliant British movie, period piece. The ambience, costumes, the air and allure; Brittany should really keep to those types of topics. Don't get me wrong, I love England! God bless William and Kate! But they are not known for anything other than theater and royalty. I would love to go to an English theater and watch opera. But they are not known for that are not Known for their cuisine, are they? Lol.
  • I really enjoyed this series. I loved seeing Bristol and the actors were great. It was easy to follow and action packed. It's not a hollywood buster i like that. Sometimes i like the more independent films. There's something about the characters that make it more relatable.
  • I watched season one at a special screening cinema event after all episodes had aired on the internet. It was really well received on the night so I also purchased the DVD version and financially contributed to the making of the second series.

If you haven't watched it yet I would definitely give it a go. I love a good cliffhanger and had to watch all the episode back to back to find out what happens next!

Being a Bristolian I loved recognising all the buildings and locations in Bristol used for filming.

It's not a big budget blockbuster film but it has everything needed to draw you in and make you want to know what happens next. Can't wait for the next instalment (series 3?)
  • This film was a little gem. No fantastic special effects and even so, the story was good and the acting was pretty acceptable. For an Indie film, on a very low budget, this film was very good. I gave it a 10 considering the budget and story and acting and plot and the excellent fight with the soldier. Also, the wimpy girl, Sarah I think, she was very good and she has great potential 😂 for the future.
  • This one really fits the bill. Characters believable and likeable and I love the film's intersection with the past. Well worth the watch.
