Wow. I used to love this show and the Lola character I thought was fabulous. Smart, beautiful, ethical, and honorable so i thought. They bring in this overall muscular actor to play her ex-boyfriend and suddenly, she is supposed to be the opposite of all those things. Hollywood is a joke! So noone on TV can be all those things and still be entertaining, I guess. Just when i thought i was watching something more than a soap opera where everyone sleeps together and remains friends, they do this to the one character I admired. I only liked a few shows on television, the FBIs, Bluebloods and All Rise but i guess they are going to trash it because i guess they don't have enough creative imagination to incorporate excitement without tainting it like they are starting to do with All Rise. Lazy writing again so you can go ahead and cancel it again, I'm done!!
  • Most of the negative reviews of this series dismiss the show altogether based on a lack of realism.

The truth is that no legal drama serves as an accurate depiction of a real life courtroom. Not even Law and Order or Matlock are realistic interpretations of true court proceedings. Further, the grandiose behaviors that are consistently offered under the guise of drama would never be acceptable in real life court proceedings. Regardless, the show is entertaining.

I suspect that those who dismiss the show outright have a problem with the mostly diverse cast and the main antagonist being a woman of color. The writing and production are as good as anything else on network TV. Further, I'm noticing that any new show that addresses racial commentary or issues of bias is immediately criticized as social justice signaling or promoting liberal ideals. But, I wonder two things: what's wrong with social justice? and what's the opposite of social justice since so many are in favor of its antonym?
  • Warning: Spoilers
I re-watched season 1 to get caught up to the current season so felt like I was coming into the show fresh. But since I'd already watched it and decided I liked it before it felt strange to one episode by episode after another begin to witness it's devolution. Only to see it go completely off a cliff in season 3.

It's not just about some actors changed or gone. They've fundamentally changed 2 core characters into completely different people. Same actors. Same characters. But they AREN'T the same people.

First the less irritating. Robin, the FBI husband. The replacement is fine, we know actors move on. This guy is just as great as Robin. Plus he's gorgeous so who's gonna complain? Am'I'right ladies? Not that the previous one wasn't but...

I had actually hoped we'd gotten rid of Emily Lopez by season 3. I rooted for it. It was time for her to move on. She was my most annoying character. I know she was troubled due to her abuse, but man, she can heap that abuse OUT too. There were lots of times SHE was the abuser (verbally) then she'd take it back or apologize. That can only happen so many times before they're presenting the same abusive behavior to others.

Luke, his new PD role was expected but his appearance change didn't fit him. He came off as trying to be a suave ladies man in season 3. That's NOT who the 1-2 season Luke WAS. They could've made him more self-confident without gussying him up as if he got a city-fied make-over.

Sara Castillo is weird. Changing her job to becoming a social worker, ok, fine...I can buy that. But she doesn't act LIKE Sara who's now a social worker. She's got a different personality. Different outlooks. Different...Sara. It's as if the writers or producers said...this character shouldn't have been like this...let's have her be this but we'll give it one episode to explain why we're changing this character completely (she's just gonna have an epiphany about her job) and the audience will just have to buy it. Well...I don't. I LIKED the Sara, court reporter and buttinsky character. They should've kept Sara and just introduced a new social worker type character named...Beverly. Or whatever.

And Sharri Kansky. She actually was my favorite character. Little bit cranky. Little bit sweet. Always smart, quick-witted, sees things very clearly in a snappy way. But we went from her beginning to soften and have a boyfriend to that suddenly being over with NO explanation and now she's just back to being single (or she's seeing someone but now it's no longer important to have us even meet him?) But worst of all is she's WEIRD now. Now she has to be the buttinsky because Sara isn't there anymore. But worse is she's no longer intelligent behaving. Snappy. Quick. She feels like she's become a dullard. Again, they decided her chaacter needed to change? And I don't really care what is going on with her parents in season 3. They didn't set up ANY groundwork for this backstory. But suddenly it's happening? Bulloney.

Again, I think this is because OWN owns it now. OWN is just Lifetime Movie channel with emphasis on racial dramas instead of stalker killer christmas movies. They ruined All Rise.

But what REALLY ruined it for me? Season 3, episode 11 when Lola Carmichael became a weak woman and let some neanderthal misogynist put her in a position of having her FANTASTIC FBI hunk of a husband walk in on her kissing him. Him being her 1st serious love who's been acting like a dick all season. While he (the great husband) has been snapped at, accused of not being very caring about his wife who CHOSE to work's feelings about how he does things without HER permission. Horrible storyline. Makes me dislike Lola personally. She's being selfish. While he's actually trying to make sure everything works.

I seriously doubt I'll be coming back to watch the rest of season 3. OWN has lost me as a viewer. Because they've made some hugely bad fundamental changes to the show that I don't want to waste my time with.

Shoulda let it stay cancelled in season 2. Least then it'd go out on a high-note.
  • I loved this show when it first aired and was so pleased OWN made the wise decision to continue it. Everything about this court room drama is compelling. Great plot lines, stellar acting and timely topics of discussion. It has incredibly strong leads and is timely for the times we live!
  • I loved, loved, loved the first two seasons of All Rise. Sigh! I was truly disappointed when it was canceled then elated when the series was picked up by OWN. Some of the episodes are now poorly written with, relationship drama overload, unrealistic exchanges between characters, predictability, outright silliness, some straight-up stupidness, and some stories are overly dramatized (specifically episode 10). I was preoccupied in August when the season finale, episode 10, aired, and forgot about it until now, October 6th. I would have never forgotten to watch an episode during seasons one and two, which says a lot about season three. Episode 10 is so poorly written that I was talking out loud to my monitor, expressing how stupid certain scenes were, and how predictable others were. I found myself clicking the skip forward button several times to get past the foolishness. Smh! During the Summer, I could not bring myself to watch episode 8. The storyline was so silly, and not in a humorous way. Auntie O, what have you done to this once excellent series!!!
  • DO YOU REALLY WANT TO TAKE THE ADVICE OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE WATCHED ONE OR LESS THAN 1 EPISODE? I am a white male in my 50's and I LOVE this show. I started watching just because I always love Simone Missick, but I got hooked on the whole cast. These are very diverse, complicated people. The script is both well written and well acted. Most of the characters are explored (over time) and we get to see what made them who they are. Some have very unique and funny quirks (just like real people). We watch as some explore inter-office relationships as others have outside ones. Each episode explores new cases and character story lines that leave you guessing and there are many plot twists. For those that are able to experience emotions, this will have you feeling all of them.
  • A nice premiere episode. Two court cases are presented to a new judge who gets appointed after an older judge retires after a "meltdown" of the bailiff in his courtroom. (Involving a non-fatal shooting.) She is there to witness it. Seems like the intent is to present a semi-dramatic version of "Night Court" with several likeable" supporting actors. She has also made an adversary of a well-respected female detective.

    I think I'm going to like this. The writing is sharp. The characters are approachable. Simone Missick has a serenity that balances the rapid fire dialogue. It's going to have to self correct on edging toward being sappy but, otherwise, I think this has potential. I give this pilot a 7 (good) out of 10. {Legal Drama}

The pilot episode was very entertaining. I liked the upbeat pace, the casting choices and the overall tone. I noticed a comment about the show being "unrealistic" because it doesn't faithfully represent an actual courthouse, but I don't think it was ever the premise. It's not your usual legal drama and isn't trying to be. I was glad to see Bethel. He was a great choice for the role of a swaggy DA, and Missick is fierce as Judge Lolacoaster!
  • Many of the other reviewers here seem to have no understanding of race and class issues in the USA, and so have a hard time understanding the point of the show. Realism isn't the point, social commentary is. My opinion is that most people don't want to think when they watch TV - especially when presented with something new to them. Read the below reviews with that in mind and see what you think.

We watch the first two seasons and enjoyed them so we were looking forward to season three. The first couple of episodes I chalked it up to them just needing to get their sea legs back but I it seems that the issue is more fundamental than that.. There is flaw in the show that wasn't there before. The characters are so wildly over acting their parts that, in some cases, the characters are not the same. It is like the actors were told to kick it up a few notches. I'm sorry but that does not work for me. You don't have to beat me over the head.
  • I really enjoyed this new legal drama and was shocked when it got canceled after 2 seasons. I appreciate that OWN found the show and characters as entertaining as I did and brought it back on their network. I hope to see ALL the characters return now that it's back!
  • I liked this Shows season 1. I don't remember why, probably because I liked the characters. Seeing what a judge does was a fresh take in the lawyer drama series for me. Lola is idealistic and wants to change the system and plays by her rules while she also struggles with justice. You get to know the cast and they all seem fine. I used to wait every next episode with anticipation.

2nd season... I dont know what went wrong but I don't like the characters as they feel uninteresting. Lola is absent because she has a baby that serves no purpose in the plot (probably the actress actually had a baby? I dont know). Some cases are interesting but without Lola the show falls short, as most other judges feel stupid (especially the male judges). The 2nd season does have an ongoing investigation along with the episodic struggles, which is very interesting. But giving that very serious case to a rookie ADA girl (Samantha Powell) is plain stupid, making me realize that it is a show that should not be taken too seriously.

The writers seem to struggle with the drama a lot. Lola was disappointment with her husbands absence but everything is okay when she got pregnant out of the blue. Sherri Kansky spent several episodes getting a boyfriend and we never see him again. Sara Castillo is pretty much useless so they shoehorn child abuse to make her relevant (she is the only one without a boyfriend or girlfriend). And the main two couples broke up at the same time for exactly the same reason! Yes, Mark Callan and Emily Lopez kissed other people and they make a huge deal out of it for several episodes! I mean...how old are they? I can stomach relationship quarrels in my TV shows but this is high school level drama. Something feels lost in the 2nd season and their personal relationships mean nothing to me. They seem to drag, than uplifting the story, as they exist solely for nagging purposes and nothing more than filler. It makes the series feel like a directionless soap opera, than a well respected legal drama.

What the hell happened to this show?! I used to look forward to watching it. Now it's Language, gratuitous sexual scenes, and soap opera tropes. This is NOT the same show from before. I won't be watching anymore.

I found it funny and touching . Enjoyed it very much. It follows several cases and personal lives and interacts them seamlessly. The show has several big name actors/actresses and the characters they portray are believable and so far suit them perfectly. The show is lighthearted and entertaining from beginning to the end.

Not sure why everyone hates this show. I think it makes for great television drama. Maybe it's not the most factually accurate but I don't care. I just want to sit down after work and relax and this show serves that purpose.

I enjoyed watching this. I am excited to see more. Love the cast already
  • So I watched the first season of all rise episode 1 through 20 then you get to the very last episode and somehow it must have been filmed during the pandemic so they decided to write in the pandemic listen nobody wants to watch a TV show where there's a bunch of people walking around wearing face masks and then CBS canceled it my guess is because of the pandemic and the ratings went down because people didn't want to watch people walking around wearing face mask own took over it went downhill from there honestly I've never really watched a court drama like this show I mean it really didn't have much of a chance of probably getting a season 3 it's basically a five-star show it's got your drama your comedy and your soap opera.
  • Season one is entertaining and enjoyable, dealing with court procedural and interpersonal in a balanced and interesting way. It takes on some interesting and challenging topics reasonably and even-handedly.

Sadly, perhaps due to pandemic intervention, the second season becomes a teen-angst style relationship soap opera. The previously good procedural elements are reduced in volume, content and credibility, often as a token gesture or used as polemic.

The third outing is coming up, hopefully it will be more like the first than the second.

I have not seen a show for many years with the heart that is contained in "All Rise". The writing, directing, acting, are all on par. This show has a spark, and little can be done to put it out.

I have a new show formula...try it three times before deciding .yay, or 'nay,. Even though i leaned toward 'nay' after the three, i stuck with it, as it found its footing. With top notch writing now on hand, All Rise is one of the best shows on TV. The characters are well done and relate well to one another. You never know what you're gonna get for cases but its how the characters react is what I like. A little humor, a little drama,it covers the bases. Must watch TV. Try it now for three episodes. You won't be disappointed.
  • The series was quirky and funny in the beginning, now it's moved from the courtroom to the relationships of all the courthouse personnel. IT'S BORING. I don't care about the relationship drama or particular causes. It's become very much a chick series with Wilson Bethel as resident "eye candy". Adios!
  • What a great last episode.

I cannot believe they cancelled this show.

They wrapped it up really nice.

    Someone pick this show up.
  • The show is a well done court-room drama, fairly light in terms of the violence (which I appreciate!). Casting and writing are intelligent and yes, this show very much pushes social issues. I think that's a good thing!

I find it fascinating that some of the comments here, about this show, are critical of the social mission. Why would a person object to entertainment that challenges the status quo, and which illuminates the experience of people who are usually marginalized? This is part of how people learn, by challenging the familiar. Kudos to the producers, writers, cast and crew, for bringing us something that inspires viewers to think. Even those who are uncomfortable with the content must admit, it made them think.
  • After the first episode I had hope it could turn out to be a descent court dramedy, unfortunately I don't feel so optimistic after the second one. The show seems to follow a simple formula which is taking over the story and characters, and part of it is: show a couple of cases, make it very clear what is right and what is wrong for each, make the main characters fight for the right thing and the replaceable characters fight for the wrong thing. The show has a very simplistic worldview and I have trouble imagining how that wouldn't get in the way of character and story development. Don't think I would be watching next week.
