A land baron tries to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident.
While the main story here could have been set in many other places, the background story regarding inherited land in Hawaii reflects and carries forward the themes found in the films Hawaii (1966) and The Hawaiians (1970). None of the characters are descended from the fictional Hale or Huxley families from Jame Michener's book on which the films are based (which follows the families up through the mid 1950s). However, their story of haolies acquiring and passing along land across generations closely parallels that in this film. As such, the above films are quite suitable to be viewed before seeing The Descendants.
My friends on the mainland think just because I live in Hawaii, I live in paradise. Like a permanent vacation. We're all just out here sipping Mai Tais, shaking our hips, and catching waves. Are they insane?
When Scottie apologizes to Lani, Dog the Bounty Hunter can be seen on the television. The scene on the television repeats as the camera angle changes.
