Stanley Tucci was cast to play the Biblical character Noah. After Evan Almighty (2007) failed at the box-office, Noah was cut from the film.

The film was originally given an R rating when first submitted for US theatrical release. Prior to theatrical release, it was then cut in the US for an MPAA PG-13 rated cinema release. This was further cut by the BBFC for a 12A rated cinema release in 2009. An uncut version has been released on home video with a 15 rating in the UK and MPAA Unrated in the US.
