It’s been a banner year for wrestling documentaries, with the release of both You Cannot Kill David Arquette and Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro. For the latter, documentarian Michael Paszt spent several years chronicling the life of Ian Hodgkinson, aka Vampiro, following him during his time working with several companies in Mexico and here in the United States (you can read my review Here).
Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Hodgkinson and Paszt about their experiences collaborating together on Nail in the Coffin, and they discussed the process of making the documentary, Hodgkinson’s career, and the surprises that cropped up along the way.
Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro is currently available to rent digitally or you can purchase it on Blu-ray as well.
Great to speak with you guys today. Ian, was there a...

For this review round-up, I’ll be talking about a trio of recent releases that include Antebellum from directors Christopher Renz and Gerard Bush, the wrestling documentary Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro, as well as McG’s latest horror comedy, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, which recently debuted exclusively on Netflix.
Antebellum: I had such high hopes for Antebellum going into it, but there’s a very precise moment in the film where it decides to take a huge left turn, and that’s when everything, to me, fell totally and completely apart with the story. Before that, I absolutely loved the characters, the performances, the costume design, as well as some fantastic production design that was a real highlight as well, and both the pacing and a palpable sense of tension made Antebellum an enthralling experience to watch unfold.

Pro wrestlers often lead tragic lives. That’s just sort of baked into the cake of professional wrestling. The athletes live hard, indulge often times in various substances, and simply don’t have a particularly long life expectancy. Those who live to be old men and women are in the minority. Even seeing those who have triumphed over the sort of adversity that takes down so many of their colleagues is noteworthy. That’s what makes the documentary Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro so interesting, as this is truly about the fall, but also the rise, of a wrestler who could have been just another statistic. The documentary is about Ian Hodgkinson, better known as his wrestling alter ego Vampiro. Looking into the legendary career of Hodgkinson’s wrestling persona, Vampiro, the doc is far more concerned with who he is as a person, as...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]
