There are many twists and turns in this film. The first half is suspenseful and intriguing, but ultimately it all becomes a bit too contrived and convoluted and quite unbelievable as it goes on. It's too long and there are too many plotlines, so it kind of loses focus of the main one, which is a murder story. They should have just focussed on that and develop it more, because some of the characters and their motives could have been explored more and painted a little more creatively, because especially the bad guy was rather boilerplate.

The movie follows two detectives rivalry and their extreme competition of proving oneself better than other while solving a brutal school girl murder case. Two detectives Han-So and Mintae trying hard and soul to catch the killer. While solving the case, Han-so takes the help of his underworld connection. After that things started to turn ugly when his under world informant kills a person. The Informant started threating him and asks him to cover the case for her. Han-so got himself in a trap with non ending blackmail. So,he also focuses on the blackmailer rather than murder case of school girl. Moreover,he kills his blackmailer. Mintae discloses evidences against Han-So.

I wanted to like this movie and it had a good start, but after the first half the movie goes down hill... basically it's just a phone vibrating on and on and I had to pause because it was so annoying. I just wanted that detective to get shot on the spot... I cannot recommend this movie.

    Why?
    Warning: Spoilers
Why Su, the main character, went when the confident girl called him, why he left the car's engine on, why he left his gun in the car, why he didn't notice that she could find his gun aaall the way he stayed in the girl's car, why stayed with her (when he has no need at all) until she murder the drug dealer? (why she killed him just 3 days before his time in prison ended?!). That scene wich by the way, trigger all the film is totally incredible and stupid, that moment she use it all the film as lever on him, and without this simple scene there is no lever so no film at all, that scene, the lever, the trigger of the entire film, is totally empty of reasons, unbelievable.

How "the final boss" entered so easily I'm the detective's ex wife home? (A taser open all doors of course) how he knows where she lives in first place! How the old confident woman (pub's owner) knows exactly where the killer was?.. There is too many questions without answer, too many deus ex machinas.

This film is one of the worst I've seen in long time.

Depending on your moral compass and your drive to succeed and your ambitions ... well you may be motivated to do certain things that others (in this case the viewers for example) may not look favorably upon ... The movie has quite the story and the pressure for the two leads to succeed ... but instead of working together to overcome evil, they are made or rather pit against each other.

Who's first and all that. How far would you go? Would you allow yourself to go beyond the law even though you are supposed to protect it? Do the ends justify the mean? And how mean can or should you be? Quite the intriguing and crazy story ... you may not agree with many (or any for that matter) actions ... you may not find a character you really root for ... but that does not make the movie any less interesting and sinister ...
  • THE BEAST (2019) THE fight between two detectives in solving serial murders... This movie has unique ending...

A murder case takes place that shook the nation, veteran detective, Han-Su, begins investigating the case and does whatever necessary to catch the culprit, along with his junior detective, Jong-Chan.

In the midst of the ongoing investigation, the drug-broker, Chun-Bae, gives Han-Su a definitive clue involving the murder case, in return for covering her relation to a murder.

Han-Su's rival cop, Min-Tae, smells something fishy, and the investigation starts to take a wrong turn.

    Must watch investigation thriller..!

    Warning: Spoilers
THE BEAST is another fine South Korean cop thriller and one that's based on a popular French flick of 2004 called 36. I've not seen the French film but this one's a superior story of police corruption and morals, with the title referring to almost all of the dark characters featured here. On the face of it the film is about two rival detectives hunting for a serial killer with a penchant for murdering young women, but there's much more depth and complicity to it than that. There are twists and turns and surprises galore, with the usual fine acting you expect from Korean cinema and an increasing sense of desperation as the running time goes on.

I found this film to be an absolute masterpiece.

This is Korean cinema at its finest from the fantastic acting to the tense ridden musical score.

The film is basically ambition blinding people from doing their job and not caring about the consequences of their actions.

Films like this are the reason I love watching world cinema especially Korean, and not that Hollywood garbage that gets churned out like a machine.

The tension created by the ominous score and superb camerawork is genius.

Another review complained about the phone ringing sequence...I thought that was the best scene and had to rewind it twice! Look at the paranoia that ringtone represents and what's going on around him do to him.

This is a modern Korean classic and a must see for everyone!
