Depending on the viewer's interpretation, this could technically be the second time that George Clooney has played a character with terminal cancer. The first could be Up in the Air (2009), which, according to some viewers, contains hints to a removed ending where his character was revealed to have terminal cancer (although the director Jason Reitman has denied that this subplot was ever scripted, much less filmed).
