To call Elvis Costello an artistic chameleon is almost too easy. He’s more akin to a Cheshire Cat, appearing and disappearing across the pop music spectrum at will, identifiable only by the sly grin that permeates his work. The breadth of his collaborations are limited only by his own imagination and good taste; over the last two decades he’s played with everyone from the Roots to the Brodsky Quartet, Allen Toussaint to Chet Baker, Marcus Mumford, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and — most famously — his crack backing band, the Imposters. So, it makes total sense that he...

Scrolling through her phone, she presents me with a photograph of a fearsome looking woman with Pris from Blade Runner eye make-up, wearing an elaborate headdress and holding a tambourine.

Not for the first time, former Doctor Who companion John Barrowman has come out in defense of Jodie Whittaker’s casting as the first female Time Lord.
While appearing on Good Morning Britain (via Radio Times) to promote his involvement in the Manchester Opera House, Barrowman hailed Whittaker’s addition as a “great” boost for the Doctor Who franchise. The Broadchurch actress is due to make her first real appearance in next month’s festive special, “Twice Upon a Time,” and it’s fair to say that Whovians are already beside themselves with excitement.
Chris Chibnall will be the one directing Jodie Whittaker come 2018, and when John Barrowman was pressed about the concept of a female Doctor, the actor responded as so:
There’s no Gallifreyan law in the Gallifreyan text that says it has to be a man. I think it’s about time… we should give her a chance.

Some people find travel broadening. Some people travel to relax and get away from it all. When Geoff Dyer travels, the world is like a million hammers, pounding him into himself, creating a strange and wonderful hall of mirrors that, while it can be trying -- even depressing -- is strangely exhilarating. That's the basic story and feel of Yoga For People Who Can't Be Bothered To Do It, Dyer's irrepressible but annoying memoir/travelogue, published in 2003.
Dyer is a thinker/writer. Thankfully, he has a comic's touch; sometimes he can be very funny indeed. Most of the humor comes out of the situations he, pathetic geek that he is, puts himself in. There are a couple of "jokes" which ring out discordantly, but overall, the humor is organic and tinged with some pretty deep, pretty depressing thinking.Nietzsche on the borscht belt. The first clip from the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special has now arrived online, after debuting as part of the BBC’s Children in Need celebrations in the UK.
Titled “Twice Upon A Time,” the special will follow on from the season 10 finale, when a dying Twelfth Doctor encountered his first incarnation, who was similarly on the cusp of regeneration. In this episode, the two Time Lords will have to pair up to save time and gain an unlikely companion in the form of Mark Gatiss’ Captain, a soldier from the First World War.
The clip showcases an important moment from the episode, as it sees the First Doctor realizing that this crazy Scottish man with his own Tardis is actually a version of himself from the future. It also gives us another fun “it’s bigger on the inside” reaction to the vehicle from Gatiss’ character. Seeing as the...

In a historical moment that marked a shift in her 65-year reign, Queen Elizabeth relinquished the duty of laying a wreath on her behalf for Britain’s fallen soldiers to her son, Prince Charles.
Instead, she chose to stand alongside her husband of almost 70 years as they watched their son take on the sacred duty at the annual Remembrance Sunday service.
Charles, 68, performed the somber ceremony as the Queen, 91, and Prince Philip, 96, looked down from a balcony of the Foreign and Comonwealth Office in London.
This year marks the first time she has been present at the ceremony and not laid a wreath.

Harvey Weinstein is reportedly on the verge of joining a small club of disgraced public figures who have been stripped of their honorary British titles and decorations.
Following the mogul’s recent sexual assault and harassment scandal, the British government’s Honors Forfeiture Committee is actively considering removing his Cbe, an honorary title that stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire, according to the BBC.
Weinstein received the title, which is one step down from a knighthood, from Queen Elizabeth II in 2004 for his contribution to the British film industry.

The upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special is stuffed like a yuletide turkey with tons of things of interest for fans. Peter Capaldi is going to regenerate into Jodie Whittaker, David Bradley’s First Doctor will be teaming up with the Twelfth and former companions Pearl Mackie and Jenna Coleman are set to have cameos. Last but least, fan favourite Mark Gatiss will also be appearing in a guest role that’s been shrouded in mystery… Perhaps, that is, until now.
As is clear in the trailer (see above), Gatiss is playing a British officer in World War I who somehow gets swept up in an adventure with the two Doctors. Having earned over $800 million, Wonder Woman has proven itself on many levels. In a year that started, more or less, with Hidden Figures, and with a summer that had three hits featuring women (the others being Atomic Blonde and Girls Trip) the female half of the movie going audience is finally receiving their due. Director Patty Jenkins has certainly shattered some records and glass ceilings along the way while Gal Gadot has now proven she can open a movie.
With Wonder Woman out today on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video, we have a chance to look back and enjoy it all over again. While it fits neatly in the larger DC Cinematic Universe thanks to the framing sequence, the movie largely works on its own with a vastly superior tone and vision than its predecessors.

Nathalie Baye and Xavier BeauvoisThe strength of women left alone to fend for themselves is the communal focus of actor and director Xavier Beauvois’s The Guardians. After directing Of Gods and Men (2010), Beauvois’s excellent neo-western set among French monks in Algeria, we lost sight of this under-estimated director—his next was a quasi-comedy I’m dying to see about ruffians stealing Chaplin’s corpse—though it was a delight to encounter him earlier this year before the camera as one of Juliette Binoche’s many love (and sex) interests in Claire Denis’s Let the Sunshine In. I am very glad indeed that Beauvois is back in the director’s seat and in the international spotlight with The Guardians, adapted from an obscure 1924 novel by Ernest Pérochon about a struggling farmstead on the home front of the First World War, and one of the exceptional films of the year.

Dear Kelley and Fern,I'm sorry your initial schedule has been thrown off, Kelley. Logistics and mindspace are always major challenges at film festivals, where so many have to juggle venues, runtimes, jet lag, walk-speed, hunger-levels, memory recall, wifi-access, note legibility, awkward conversation time-sinks, and many other disparate variables. A more vivid festival contrast could not be better made than between Fernando’s distaste, which I share, for Darren Aronofsky’s mother! and its false audacity, and the earthy mystery in Strangely Ordinary This Devotion, with its sublimely suggestive and tactile cosmogony of birth and motherhood. No surprise that the latter is programmed in the Wavelengths’ section curated by Andréa Picard, who has made a name for herself, her program, and Toronto's festival for spotlighting such boldly challenging and invigorating films. Since his inception in the late 1920’s Winnie the Pooh has become a worldwide phenomenon, featuring countless books and adaptations throughout the characters’ existence. Throughout this time, the story has never been told about how author A.A Milne came to create the lovable bear–until now. ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin‘ tells the semi-true story of how Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) used his son, also named Christopher Robin, as inspiration for the world of Winnie the Pooh. As the books grow in popularity, the complications of success permeate back into Milne’s family life.
Based on the trailer, the film seems poised to garner a decent amount of awards season buzz, and Domhnall Gleeson’s performance seems to be one to keep an eye on this fall season. Directed by Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn), the script was written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce and Simon Vaughan. The film was produced by Damian Jones and Steve Christian.

Like its name suggests,Viceroy’s House is a movie about the last Viceroy of India, Louis Mountbatten, who was the man tasked with overseeing India’s transition from being a British holding to an independent state in its own right. As a result, the movie provides a look into some rather interesting times while giving the whole narrative a relatable feel through its focus on its leads. Here are five reasons that we will be watching Viceroy’s House: Centered Around an Interesting Figure Before the British royal family renamed themselves during the First World War for the sake of their image, was

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Grand Illusion (1937) is showing July 27 - August 26, 2017 in the United States as part of the retrospective Jean Renoir.Considering Jean Renoir's Grand Illusion today in no small part involves an awareness of status and stature, the most prominent (or maybe just the most intimidating) aspect of which surely being the cherished status the film continues to enjoy in the canon of film history. To this day, it remains a singular achievement, not only as one of Renoir's foundational masterpieces, but also as a film of its time whose contents have remained timeless. Released in 1937 to great acclaim, it bid farewell to one era of European history and warfare as another, far darker one was about to begin; thus, more than the grimly comical The Rules of the Game (made and released two years closer to the brink...

A voyeuristic, yet sexually repressed painter commissioned by a Madam for her brothel. Two young friends exploring feelings for each other. Corrupt police officers and morally corrupt religious zealots. Arranged marriages. Appreciation for art. Beautiful girls in period dress… It’s almost like De Sade, Franco, Pasolini and Borowczyk are having a brain storm session wherever they ended up after death.
Ok. That’s taking it a bit too far, but I can safely say as a lover of erotic cinema of yesteryear – Maxim Ford’s Picture of Beauty touched me in all of the right places. You can hardly expect you won’t have a good time with anything connected to Winnie the Pooh, but Goodbye Christopher Robin is a multi-faceted adventure that details the creation of the beloved stories, and the family and times that are behind that creative endeavor. The film has released a trailer, and the narration paints a picture of hope and happiness in a world gone made, but it apparently isn’t as simple as even that.
First off, the title is depressing. I mean, what kind of story starts with “Goodbye?”
More to the point, the official synopsis gives us – “Christopher Robin and his family are swept up in the international success of the books; the enchanting tales bringing hope and comfort to England after the First World War. But with the eyes of the world on Christopher Robin, what will the cost be to the family?”
What will the cost be to the family?...

In January 2017, fans of A.A. Milne celebrated the anniversary of his birthday which has become Winnie the Pooh Day. Biography.com posted a list about the British author earlier this year which you can see here.
In 2006, Winnie the Pooh received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking the 80th birthday of Milne’s creation.
Milne is most famous for his two Pooh books about a boy named Christopher Robin after his son, Christopher Robin Milne, and various characters inspired by his son’s stuffed animals, most notably the bear named Winnie-the-Pooh. Christopher Robin Milne’s stuffed bear, originally named “Edward”, was renamed “Winnie-the-Pooh” after a Canadian black bear named Winnie (after Winnipeg), which was used as a military mascot in World War I, and left to London Zoo during the war. “The pooh” comes from a swan called “Pooh”. E. H. Shepard illustrated the original Pooh books,...

Goodbye Christopher Robin is a film that tells the story behind the creation of the beloved characters of Winnie The Pooh. It follows the lives of author A.A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) as they raise their son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston). It looks like a wonderful imaginative film that is beautifully shot. It's set after World War I and follows the family as they find fame and success with Pooh. At the core, this is a father and son story.
The movie was directed by Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn, Woman in Gold) and today we have the first trailer for you to watch. But first, here's the official synopsis:

We’ve seen many variations of the animated Winnie the Pooh, but now he’s coming to life in a new feature — or more precisely, how he came to life is captured. Goodbye Christopher Robin follows author A.A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) as they raise their son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston). Directed by Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn, Woman in Gold), the first trailer has landed today ahead of a fall release.
Scripted by Frank Cottrell Boyce and Simon Vaughn, the film explores the Milne family as they encounter fame following World War I and specifically the father-son relationship at the center. Judging from the first preview, it’s as saccharine as you’d expect from this director, but hopefully the emotions are earned. Check out the trailer and poster below for the film also starring Kelly Macdonald, Stephen Campbell Moore, Alex Lawther, Richard McCabe,...

Well if this doesn’t cause your heartstrings to swell with manipulated warmth then you might as well be a stuffed toy. The first trailer for Simon Curtis’ Finding Neverland-esque biopic of the life of Winnie the Pooh creator A. A. Milne is washed in sunlight and smiles, cherubic children and the wonders of rebuilding hope in the darkest time.
Focusing on the relationship of Domhnall Gleeson as Milne with his young son, the titular Christopher Robin (as played by Will Tilston and Alex Lawther), the trailer sets its scene on the unsteady ground of post-war Britain. Making much of the enormous success of Milne’s stories the trailer hints at trouble at home, as well as the erosive effect of a world turned upside-down with war.

Town and country come together in the first, deceptively simple movie poster for Fox Searchlight’s biopic of Winnie the Pooh author A. A. Milne – Goodbye, Christopher Robin. The poster has Domhnall Gleeson as Milne walking with his young son (the titular young Master Robin – as played by Will Tilston and Alex Lawther) on a path drawn between the Milnes’ East Sussex homestead Cotchford Farm and London. Both sides of the divide are drawn in the style of Winnie the Pooh illustrator E. H. Shepard, which is a very nice touch.
Joining Gleeson, Tilston and Lawther are Margot Robbit and Kelly MacDonald, the film was written by Frank Cottrell Boyce and Simon Vaughan and has a detailed synopsis, thus:

Believe it or not, when Wonder Woman arrives in theaters on June 2, it will be the first time the character has fronted her own live-action movie. (Versus Superman's 10 or so different films and even more Batman movies.) And, in fact, the only other time Wonder Woman has appeared on the big screen is Gal Gadot's supporting role in last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. All of which is to say, you may have some questions. Like...

How similar is this Wonder Woman to the one in the comic books? Diana, Princess of Themyscira (or Diana Prince, as she's known to mere mortals) first appeared in the pages of All Star Comics #8 in 1941, created by writer William Moulton Marston and artist Harry G. Peter. Everything you know about the Amazonian warrior -- her tiara, her indestructible bracelets, the Lasso of Truth -- remains intact some 75 years later, as do many...

There’s a sense of adventure lacking in some of the movies that derive from the DC Universe. It was something that Suicide Squad sought to rectify, but did so in such a contrived manner it backfired tremendously. But Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, captures that playful tone perfectly – and when the eponymous protagonist finds herself on Earth for the first time, it almost takes on the form of Christmas classic Elf. And yet such irreverence takes little away from the severity of the narrative at hand, in what is a fine return for the studio, and a completely self-contained endeavour that will appeal to pre-established fans and newcomers alike.
Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is the Princess of the Amazons, spending her life on an idyllic, exotic island, learning to defend and to lead in anticipation of the eventual arrival of Ares, the God of War.

The film has been acquired by Hugo East for release in China in 2018 and has also started drawing in European buyers with a pre-sale to Spain’s Contracorriente.

Cluzet plays the judge and Duvauchelle the disgraced soldier. Belgian actress Sophie Verbeek recently signed to play the young man’s devoted lover.
“It’s a profoundly humanist tale exploring the impact and the myths around war with a resonance for today,” says Ftd director of international sales Julia Schulte. The €6.7m production...

Given he’s one of our very favourite directors working today, it’s of great relief that Francois Ozon is such a prolific filmmaker, moving on from one project to the next in rapid fashion. This also means he releases a lot of films, which in turn, means we get to interview him a lot. Our latest meeting with the creative auteur was in Paris, to mark the release of Frantz…
So why the black and white aesthetic?
Actually the film was supposed to be shot in colour, but I decided one month before the shoot to change everything because after the location scouting, we found some very good places, especially in Germany, but it was full of colour, and I realised walking in the city, I saw some pictures of the place in black and white from the beginning of the century, and realised nothing had changed,...
