Cloverfield burst onto the scene in 2008 and surprised critics and audiences alike. January was known for being a dumping ground for bad films, so when a gem came out during that time, it was highly regarded by the masses. The original Cloverfield was a spin on the classic monster feature following a group of New Yorkers enjoying a party until a creature the size of a skyscraper invades their city. Cloverfield collected nearly $200 million worldwide, but a sequel didn’t come out until 2016. Following the success of 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Cloverfield Paradox became a Netflix exclusive that...

Action movies need to innovate to remain relevant in a crowded genre, blending horror elements to captivate a wider audience. Cult classic action-horror films like Aliens and Predator have stood the test of time, earning them respect as pivotal parts of film history. Compelling characters, intense fight scenes, and terrifying twists make action-horror movies like 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead must-watch films.
Fight scenes, violence, and heroic deeds are all expected in a typical action movie, but some utilize aspects of the horror genre to make the scariest action movies out there. Not strictly horror or action, these films blend genres brilliantly to appeal to a wider range of audiences and push the boundaries of what the typical action movie can be. Although horror isn't for all audiences, these films also tell compelling stories and incorporate strong character development to keep the viewer invested.

The found footage subgenre is got very tired very fast. We all love solid entries like As Above, So Below and Cloverfield, but let's be honest — it's been nice having a break from these movies in recent years. The late 2000s to mid-2010s saw a massive boom in these inexpensive horror films. While it was a fun ride at first, things got old fast after enough filmmakers decided they could spend next to no money and make a couple of bucks after putting in very little effort. But lest we forget that there was a time when the prospect of first-person horror movies was actually exciting!

Found footage is one of the most popular subgenres of horror. Still, while some films like The Blair With Project, Paranormal Activity, and Cloverfield found great success, one entry, Megan Is Missing, was overlooked by the general public. Only the most hardcore horror fans saw it when it was released in 2011. However, during the pandemic, the movie got a second wind when it became a viral TikTok trend. Writer and director Michael Goi's film was actually filmed in 2006 at the cost of a mere $35,000, and the low-budget nature worked to its benefit. Where other found footage movies were about witches, ghosts, and monsters, Megan Is Missing is something darker because of how real it feels. It tells the story of 14-year-old Megan Stewart (Rachel Quinn) and her best friend Amy Herman (Amber Perkins) as they start talking with a boy online who isn't who he says he is. When both girls disappear,...

It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s 80s-set “IMAX thrill-ride” for Bad Robot is shrouded in secrecy. So could Flowervale Street be another Cloverfield spin-off? We look at the possible clues.
We’ve been following the slightly under-the-radar progress of Flowervale Street for some time now. An upcoming film from It Follows and Under The Silver Lake director David Robert Mitchell, it has been shrouded in secrecy for several months, with even that title currently in question.
As more details about the project have emerged, though, we’ve began to wonder: could it be another film in the Cloverfield series? If so, this would place it in a series that has so far included the 2008 original and the spin-offs 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018).
Let’s take a quick look at the clues we currently have to hand.

Tom Holland became a household name thanks to his portrayal of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Peter Parker, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Following in the web-slinging footsteps of Andrew Garfield, Holland made his debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. He then went on to star in his own Spider-Man trilogy – Homecoming, Far From Home, and the record-breaking No Way Home – becoming the youngest actor to ever play the iconic hero on the big screen.

Overlord, The Mist, and Annihilation share cosmic horror themes similar to the Cloverfield franchise. A Quiet Place, Life, and The Thing also align thematically with Cloverfield's alien invasion narrative. Films like In The Mouth of Madness and The Host could easily be reworked to fit into the Cloverfield universe.
The Cloverfield franchise is an immensely popular sci-fi horror series made up of anthology stories, and while these 10 films aren't part of the franchise, they could easily have the Cloverfield label on them. Since the original film released in 2008, the Cloverfield franchise has found scripts linked by common themes and ideas, acquired them, and slapped the Cloverfield branding on them. 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox could be viewed as standalone films, but they are part of the Cloverfield universe, something that these 10 films could have been as well.

Lovecraft's influence on horror is so vast that many iconic movies and TV shows owe their existence to his cosmic horror themes. Even if viewers aren't familiar with Lovecraft's work, they've likely encountered his aesthetic in popular media like Stranger Things. Classic horror films like The Thing and modern series like Stranger Things showcase Lovecraft's enduring impact on pop culture.
The influence of writer H.P. Lovecraft was so far-reaching that many of the best horror movies and television shows would not exist without him. With writings based around cosmic horror, the unknowable terror of the universe, and the potential for madness hidden just below the surface of human psychology, Lovecraft was active during the early 1900s, but his themes are as relevant today as they ever were. While there have been countless adaptations of Lovecraft's work, there were many movies and TV shows that were not directly adapted from him...

Godzilla is the premiere name when it comes to kaiju (giant monster) movies, with King Kong being right behind him. This has been solidified by the success of the MonsterVerse by Legendary Pictures, though at one point, there was seemingly a rival to Kong's crown. While this fellow American kaiju started off strong, the series that spawned it took a nosedive.

One of the most interesting types of movies is a mockumentary, or fiction films that imitate documentaries. Depending on the genre, there can be different reasons for using this format. The film language of documentaries gives horror and science fiction movie audiences a terrifying feeling that the story might be real or one day become real, while the same narrative device makes the drama even sadder and comedy even funnier.

The 4-koma style of manga is a visually distinct format that typically uses its unique format to tell relatable, slice-of-life stories that viewers can laugh at and connect with. Some have become incredibly well-known and popular anime series, like Bocchi The Rock! and K-On!, while others are more obscure, but all of them do a fantastic job at conveying the various ups and downs of high school life in various ways.
Since the 4-koma style relies on getting each chapter's point across in only four panels, it's the perfect format for a simple slice-of-life series that viewers already have some frame of reference for. There doesn't have to be an elaborate setup for a music-loving high school girl tackling social anxiety, or friends making the most of their fleeting time together, and these 4-koma anime adaptations capture the spirit of their original manga perfectly.

Filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg and 20th Century Studios are going hunting again.
Trachtenberg, who earned an Emmy nomination for his 2022 Predator movie Prey, is returning to the sci-fi action horror franchise to make a new installment.
Titled Badlands, the new Predator feature is not a sequel to Prey, which was set in 1719 and centered on a young Comanche woman forced to fight for survival against the intergalactic hunters, but rather a brand new story. Plot details are being kept secret but this one is said to be set sometime in the future. Like Prey, however, it too will feature a female lead.
As with Prey, Trachtenberg wrote the story with Patrick Aison, with the latter penning the screenplay. The project has been working under invisibility for some time and is far enough along that a July start of production is being planned.
Badlands isn’t the only Predator project in the works.

New Yorkers minding their own business when aliens attack from the sky? That sounds like a Cloverfield! Well, the first Cloverfield from 2008, anyway.
The teaser for the film promised hip New York teens filming themselves during an alien invasion. Between the Escape from New York homage and the name “J.J. Abrams” — better known at the time for Alias and Lost instead of Star Trek Into Darkness or Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — the Cloverfield trailer created a buzz that concealed the finished product from director Matt Reeves and writer Drew Goddard.

When you look back on them, A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place: Part II were all about restraint – intended to pitch viewers into a world of near-total silence, and subsequently dread every single tiny noise for fear of alien annihilation. And they proved highly effective horror-thrillers, anchored in character and brilliantly directed by John Krasinksi. But the first trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One offers a different angle on those ideas – plunging us head-first into a world of total noise and chaos, as the audibly-motivated extra-terrestrial creatures decimate New York City. As you might guess, it looks incredibly intense. Stick your seatbelt on, and watch the trailer here:
Blimey. We previously got a glimpse of ‘Day One’ of the alien attack in Part II, and that was pure carnage even just in a slice of smalltown America. The big city – the biggest city, in fact, the Big Apple...

Horror movie monsters should have chilling designs that are only revealed briefly for maximum scare factor. Weak creature designs in horror movies can ruin the atmosphere and tension created by the film. The reveal of a monster can sometimes be a letdown after a buildup of intense suspense and mystery.
Horror Movies are the best when they're preying on the audience's fear of the unknown, but sometimes, they pull back the curtain to reveal a ridiculous monster that retroactively ruins all the scary goodwill they built. The best horror movie monsters have chilling, unnatural designs that viewers are only given brief glimpses of, amplifying the scare factor upon the full reveal of a deranged creature that's every bit as terrifying as imagined. Unfortunately, this can be a difficult thing to pull off, and many creature designs simply don't cut it in terms of being genuinely scary.

Anime series are sometimes original works, while most others are based on existing media, such as manga series or light novels. Over time, countless manga and light novel series, both major and obscure, have been adapted into wonderful anime series, but there is still more ground to cover. Plenty of manga have yet to get an official anime adaptation, including the short series. If the shorter series don't have enough material to become an anime series, then they could become an anime movie instead.

Sci-fi films are known for their ability to build worlds and explore possible futures, but all of that can come to naught when the ending ruins what came before. Sci-fi is an incredibly flexible movie genre that can feature aliens, distant futures, technology beyond the possible, and stories that push the limits of reality, but even with all of that, it can still go wrong. Any movie calls on viewers to suspend their beliefs, and sci-fi does this more than most other genres, aside from fantasy, but it then needs to set out effective limits to give the story boundaries and create tension.
If a sci-fi film neglects to set up the rules of reality, or, when it is convenient, ignores them all together, it can leave viewers with a sour taste. This is again made worse when a movie has so much promise and potential throughout, only to falter at the last hurdle.

The funny thing about the Cloverfield franchise is just how different each of the films is. 2008's Cloverfield is a found footage monster film, followed up by 10 Cloverfield Lane, a psychological thriller released in 2016. The Cloverfield Paradox is a science fiction horror film, released in 2018 on Netflix, that serves to explain the mythos that binds the three disparate films together. Whether it was successful in doing so is an argument for another time, but what they do share is a history of media-savvy marketing strategies that were unlike anything that had been done before. And like the films themselves, each campaign was unique.

While the MonsterVerse is best known for 2021’s action-packed grudge match Godzilla vs. Kong, the best unofficial entry in the series arrived a lot earlier. The MonsterVerse is a complicated beast. Some of its outings are relatively self-serious and grounded, like 2014’s gritty and surprisingly solemn Godzilla. Others, like 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, are much more playful and self-aware. Still, others uneasily straddle the line between these two approaches, as seen in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. However, all of the franchise’s outings have attempted to bring classic Kaiju movie thrills to Western audiences with plots that focus on both monsters and human drama.
It can be tough for the MonsterVerse to get this delicate balance right. Too much human drama can make creature features feel outright maudlin, but too little humanity can make them feel like an expensive, soulless special effects showcase.

J.J. Abrams' career has been negatively impacted by his struggles with Star Wars and DC. Despite his achievements in major franchises and TV hits, Abrams' capabilities as a leader were questioned due to creative changes in Star Wars. Abrams should focus on more original stories like his successful sci-fi movie Super 8, which showcased his talent and should serve as a blueprint for future projects.
J.J. Abrams' time linked to Star Wars and DC properties may have gone poorly, but the filmmaker has a sci-fi movie from 2011 that could serve as a blueprint for future successes. Despite being around since the '90s, Abrams didn't make his directorial debut until 2006, when he was at the helm of Mission: Impossible III. His biggest success as a director came with his next project, 2009's Star Trek, which also remains his most well-received movie with him in the director's chair. Even...

The monster in the movie Underwater is confirmed to be Cthulhu, a character from H.P. Lovecraft's literature, adding to the cosmic horror of the film. The inclusion of Cthulhu in Underwater symbolizes the theme of climate change, with the monster representing the planet fighting back against human greed and destruction. While the monster's origins in the movie are not explicitly explained, it is hinted that the drilling crew's actions awakened the Deep Ones, leading to the emergence of Cthulhu and other ancient monsters from the ocean depths.
The Underwater movie monster turned Norah's deep-sea mission on the Kepler 822 into a thalassophobia-fueled nightmare that would make H.P. Lovecraft proud, but the film itself doesn't implicitly spell out what the creature is. William Eubank's claustrophobic 2020 horror movie Underwater was set 11,000 meters under the sea in the murky depths of the Mariana Trench. It follows the crew of a...

After years of teases, Shrek 5 is finally planned with the original cast returning, but reuniting the cast could be challenging. Director Francis Lawrence teased a sequel to Constantine in 2011 and work may begin after WGA strikes, but no release date has been confirmed. Paramount announced a true sequel to Cloverfield in 2018, but there is no confirmation of a release date yet, despite years of discussion.
While many movie sequels do eventually make it out of development hell, there are plenty that seem to be stuck in limbo despite years of constant teases and updates. A film sequel can be highly anticipated, especially if its original was extremely successful upon its initial release. Even when a sequel is in high demand, they don't always make it to the big screen, with various reasons accounting for their delays or failure to be greenlit by a studio.

As one of the biggest surprise movie releases of 2023, Godzilla Minus One has become a widely discussed movie among audiences and critics. Made by Toho Studios and on a small $15 million budget, the 2023 monster movie has become one of the year's best blockbusters. Minus One modernizes themes from the 1954 original to create a story for a new generation, complete with well-developed characters and their emotionally charged backstories.
While the American version of Godzilla is still going strong in the Monsterverse, this Japanese production grounded its story in realism. Minus One reminded audiences that the monster should be feared and not cheered for. People who want more intriguing tales of monsters or disasters will have plenty to find within both subgenres, from previous iterations of Godzilla to original monster films like Cloverfield and Pacific Rim.

After directing three “Night at the Museum” movies, Shawn Levy didn’t want to be confined to directing family comedies for the rest of his career. If you’re doing something successfully, he told IndieWire, it’s easy to be “pigeonholed” by Hollywood into that one thing.
But he’s been far from limited under the banner of his own production company, 21 Laps. Levy and his company have been prolific hit-makers since it launched in 2006, and he has produced and directed everything from indie darlings (“The Spectacular Now”), ambitious Best Picture nominees (“Arrival”), studio blockbuster satires (“Free Guy“), prestige limited series (“All the Light We Cannot See”), Stephen King horror movies (“The Boogeyman”), and the biggest Netflix show ever (“Stranger Things”), all of which depart from the family-friendly event movies on which he cut his teeth.
“You need to refuse to be limited by everyone else’s assumptions,” Levy told IndieWire during a recent interview.

Leave the World Behind, Sam Esmail’s latest movie has managed to stir the pot right after it was dropped on Netflix. The star-studded cast, the tension-filled build-up laced with ample social commentary, the dry humor, and most importantly, the very cheeky, ambiguous ending have made Leave the World Behind an instant genre classic. Not everyone is too happy about the movie getting this much praise, even after not really bringing anything strikingly original to the table, but the overall response has been pretty positive. If you’ve liked watching Leave the World Behind and are now in search of similar kinds of movies, then here’s a list that’s going to come in handy for you.
1. 10 Cloverfield Lane
It can actually be said that 10 Cloverfield Lane begins where Leave the World Behind ends. Yes, I am referring to the bunker here, which is where everyone wants to end up during an apocalypse.

It takes a lot to upstage a feature film adaptation of Transformers from Michael Bay, but back in 2007, J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot stepped up to the plate. Upon the release of Transformers, a top secret teaser trailer for a mystery horror movie was unleashed upon the audience without their knowledge. Not only did this teaser trailer prompt immense shock and awe, but a ton of speculation as well. The marketing for the mysterious movie was absolutely genius as not only did this teaser trailer premiere before a major wide release, assuring a ton of eyeballs on it, but like the old days of VHS, a bunch of bootlegs of the trailer popped up online.

Found footage films, like The Blair Witch Project, use homemade videos to create a sense of realism and generate anxiety-inducing scenes. The Blair Witch Project, with a budget of only $60 thousand, became the highest-grossing found footage movie with nearly $250 million worldwide. The subgenre of found footage films has lost popularity due to the rise of social media and improved camera technology, making it unlikely for another film to surpass The Blair Witch Project's box office record.
Found footage films are a long way from their popularity peak, and today it seems impossible to beat the biggest box office record within the sub-genre. Found footage filming is a technique that consists of telling a fiction story through a homemade video that is apparently capturing real-life events. Even though it has achieved the most notorious usage within the horror genre, there are other types of movies that take advantage of the found footage technique,...

South Park's Halloween episodes are not as popular as its Christmas specials due to scheduling changes and a lack of consistent Halloween-themed episodes. The Halloween episodes often parody popular culture, with varying levels of success, such as the homage to Cloverfield in the "Pandemic" two-part episode. Some of the Halloween episodes miss the mark by focusing on secondary characters, like the goth kids in "Goth Kids 3: Dawn of the Posers," instead of the main characters that fans love.
The South Park Halloween episodes aren’t as popular as the Christmas specials, but this is mostly because the animated adult comedy doesn't have one every season. Over the course of 25 seasons, there have been 10 legitimate Halloween episodes and at least six more that fit into the theme of the October holiday season. Created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, South Park tells the story of four foul-mouthed and curious...

Theories have been trying to connect A Quiet Place to Cloverfield since the former was released. For example, Lee's newspaper clippings in A Quiet Place may connect to 10 Cloverfield Lane, suggesting a larger universe. The existence of parallel universes in the Cloverfield franchise allows for A Quiet Place to be considered an entry in the Cloververse, although the latter is better perceived as the standalone, original film it is.
A Quiet Place has been speculated to be part of the Cloverfield universe since horror audiences caught a first glimpse at the movie, but the theory connecting A Quiet Place to the shared universe is more compelling than it might initially seem. John Krasinski’s hit horror movie A Quiet Place sees the Abbott family struggle to survive in a world overrun with dangerous, noise-sensitive monsters, leading the family to exist in total silence. The 10 Cloverfield Lane ending divides audiences but fits with the film's themes of fear and regret, as Michelle overcomes one form of captivity to face a new, unknown threat. The ending reveals Howard's delusional obsession with having a family, as he uses Michelle to fill the role of his missing daughter, which adds depth to his motivations throughout the film. While the ending sparked controversy for its sudden shift into sci-fi territory, it thematically captures Michelle's need to overcome her fears and fight back, echoing the experiences of abuse survivors. The ending also connects to the wider Cloverfield franchise.
The 10 Cloverfield Lane ending is a divisive aspect of the otherwise acclaimed sequel, but it is a conclusion that plays off of the movie's deeper themes. The second film in the Cloverfield franchise is a deeply unsettling and claustrophobic experience, and from beginning to end presents itself as a...

Last year, it was announced that Under the Shadow‘s Babak Anvari had signed on to direct a new entry in the Cloverfield franchise. While we wait to hear more about that project, Anvari is busy working on another film: he’s now in production on a psychological thriller called Hallow Road, starring Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason).
Scripted by William Gillies, Hallow Road was commissioned and developed by London Film & TV. The story follows two parents who enter a race against time when they receive a distressing late-night phone call from their daughter after she caused a tragic car accident.
The film is being produced by Lucan Toh of Two & Two Pictures with Ian Henry of London Film & TV and Richard Bolger of Hail Mary Pictures. Financing is being provided by XYZ Films and Screen Ireland. Filming is taking place in Ireland and Prague.

The Blair Witch Project ending left the fate of the trio ambiguous, sparking decades of debate and speculation about what happened to them. The Blair Witch monster is based on local folklore and legends, adding depth and backstory to the film. The origins of the Blair Witch are rooted in a dark history involving accusations, disappearances, and murders. The ambiguous ending of The Blair Witch Project set a new standard for found-footage horror, captivating audiences and solidifying the film's legacy.
The Blair Witch Project ending caps off the haunting found-footage movie on a suitable ambiguous and chilling note, but it leaves many questions about what exactly happened. 1999's The Blair Witch Project series was a low-budget independent horror film from co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez. J.J. Abrams is a highly successful director in Hollywood, known for his ability to combine heartfelt storytelling with blockbuster scale, but he hasn't directed a movie since 2019. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker negatively impacted Abrams' career, receiving polarizing reviews and falling short of box office expectations. Despite signing a massive deal with Warner Bros., most of the announced projects are in limbo or have been canceled.

"As Above, So Below" is one of the better found-footage horror films to emerge in the wake of the one-two punch that was "Cloverfield" in 2008 and "Paranormal Activity" in 2009. Where many of its peers struggled to put a fresh spin on the subgenre's tropes, the Dowdle Brothers' 2014 flick is a pulpy Indiana Jones-lite action-adventure that cleverly incorporates mythical elements like the philosopher's stone -- or, as we uncultured Yanks call it, the sorcerer's stone -- and the Nine Circles of Hell from Dante Alighieri's epic 14th-century poem "Divine Comedy." Admittedly, it doesn't go so far as to reinvent the found-footage wheel, nor does it overcome some of the format's worst tendencies. But it does breathe a little more life into that formula, especially when the action inevitably devolves into people incessantly shaking the camera as they run screaming for their lives.
Of course, the biggest weapon in the film's arsenal is its setting.

10 Cloverfield Lane sets up a sequel more obviously than the original Cloverfield, giving viewers a dynamic and action-packed ending. The Cloverfield franchise's true strength lies in its dark and dystopian sci-fi world, making it more appealing to continue the story through 10 Cloverfield Lane. Although 10 Cloverfield Lane 2 is a possibility, the timing and success of Cloverfield 2 will likely determine whether or not it will actually happen.
10 Cloverfield Lane 2 remains a possibility, and one that makes a stronger case for a Cloverfield continuation than the upcoming Cloverfield 2. The franchise has stuck by its secretive roots ever since, playing its cards close to the chest with every Cloverfield sequel by using fake production names, surprise releases, and non-traditional sequels to build the franchise’s off-kilter brand.
