Just a few months ago, Netflix appeared to be on a very rough track. Then Stranger Things season 4 came around and led to a less-apocalyptic-than-expected Q2 earnings report for the streamer. With its new releases for August 2022, however, Netflix is going to have to find another hit to keep the good vibes rolling. Here are some of their best options.
Perhaps the biggest breakout candidate for Netflix this month is The Sandman on Aug. 5. Though Neil Gaiman’s classic comic has long been thought to be unadaptable, the folks behind 10-episode series are betting they’re the ones for the job. Get ready to meet Morpheus, the king of dreams and the ruler of The Dreaming.

Now here's a real high-class cartoon! Based on the beloved and bestselling 2017 video game, "The Cuphead Show!" is Netflix's latest animated adaptation from the interactive medium, following previous outstanding efforts like "Castlevania'' and last year's "Arcane." But unlike those shows, the ceramic superstar's series is aimed at a much younger audience, embodying the 1930s rubber-hose art style of its source material while playing out like a modern iteration on the shows that defined Saturday mornings in decades past.

Award shows were all the rage on Variety’s Trending TV chart for the week of Feb. 28 to March 6, as Twitter users continued to dissect all the moments from the SAG Awards. That first big award show of the year (and since the pandemic) was once again at the top of the chart with another million engagements, adding to last week’s first-place finish (with 3.6 million engagements) for host networks TNT and TBS.
The SAG Awards weren’t the only award show to draw online interest this week, however, as IFC and AMC Plus aired the 37th Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday. The Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman-hosted ceremony took place beachside in Santa Monica, where projects like “The Lost Daughter” and “Reservation Dogs” scored big wins.

Anna Delvey is continuing to rack up numbers.
Inventing Anna, the Shonda Rhimes-created limited series about the grifter otherwise known as Anna Sorokin, has scored the most hours viewed for an English-language series since Netflix changed the way that it reports its ratings data last summer.
The Shondaland-produced series, which stars Julia Garner as the fake heiress, was watched for 196M hours between February 14 and 20. This is on top of the 77M hours that it secured last week, having been released on February 11.
It makes it comfortably the streamer’s most watched English-language series in a one week period. For context, the third season of You racked up 179M hours, The Witcher drew 168M hours, Sex Education was taught for 160M and Cobra Kai wrestled 120M hours.
Given that Netflix shows generally drop on a Friday, it means that a clear picture is usually given the second week of release.

"The Cuphead Show!" debuts on Netflix today, February 18, 2022, with 12 episodes at 12 minutes each. Before you go binging it in one sitting (as I will probably do), here's some more info for you. The series is based on the 2017 video game "Cuphead: Don't Deal with the Devil," but in this show, Cuphead and his brother Mugman absolutely do. "The Cuphead Show!" creator Dave Wasson and Art Director Andrea Fernandez spoke with ComicBook.com about adapting a video game that doesn't have a ton of narrative content and that devilish storyline that runs through the episodes.

Boasting a vintage 1930s 2D visual style and packed with wacky antics, “The Cuphead Show!” is the latest addition to Netflix’s burgeoning animation slate. The 12-episode series, based on the hugely popular run-and-gun game from Studio Mdhr, follows the adventures of brothers Cuphead and Mugman as they hop out of the frying pan and into the fire only to land on their feet ready for more high-octane escapades.
The reckless and impulsive Cuphead, voiced by Tru Valentino, is tempered somewhat by his cautious and slightly neurotic brother Mugman (Frank Todaro), while Elder Kettle (Joe Hanna) is the patient guardian who ensures order in their snug little cottage on Inkwell Isle. Luke Millington-Drake voices the duo’s nemesis, The Devil, with Wayne Brady pitching in as the voice of the Cab Calloway–styled big band leader King Dice, and Grey Griffin as the noir-inflected Ms. Chalice.

When the video game “Cuphead” was released in 2017, it became something of an instant classic in the animation community. Studio Mdhr’s shoot ‘em up indie platformer, in which players take control of the title character as he goes on a quest to defeat the devil, is a loving tribute to the Golden Age of animation, with graphics that mimic the rubber hose style of the earliest Mickey Mouse and Fleischer Studios shorts. Even Dave Wasson, who doesn’t normally play video games, kept his eye on the game when it was first announced in 2013. And when he sat down to play it, he was completely blown away.
“They just nailed it in a way that I don’t think anybody else really ever has in any medium since the original 1930s,” Wasson says.

You don’t have to be a gamer to appreciate the traditional animated stylings of Cuphead. That’s the first thing Dave Wasson – showrunner behind the upcoming Netflix TV adaptation – makes clear to us. Limited videogame experience aside, with credits on Space Jam, Cool World, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, it’s hard to think of a hand better equipped to bring this madcap world of anthropomorphic crockery, vegetables, and slot machines to life.
“There was buzz about the Cuphead video game,” Wasson recalls about the early days, before he was even involved in The Cuphead Show. “Even within the animation community… because it was all based on a 1930s, rubber hose style of animation.”

The Cuphead video game won acclaim for its stunning retro art style, earworm soundtrack, and run-and-gun gameplay that’s notoriously difficult and punishing. The plot saw players trying to capture runaways that owed their souls to the Devil to evade losing their own. The animation style and music alone seemed ideal for an adaptation, but the real question […]

First "Castlevania," then "Arcane," and now "The Cuphead Show!" It looks like Netflix is slowly taking over the world of animated series based on popular video games. But if it means that one of the most stylish run-and-gun games of the decade becomes a magical, musical series about our favorite singing cups, how can we complain? "The Cuphead Show!" was announced back in 2020, as a serialized adaptation of the award-winning 2017 StudioMDHR game, "Cuphead." The show will build off the established characters and world of Inkwell Island for a new version of the titular character's many misadventures.

Just as Disney Plus, HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video are revving up their fantasy, horror and sci-fi series slates for winter 2021-2022 debuts, Netflix is touting the abundance of genre series headed to the streamer.
Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, announced premiere details for a slew of “geeky” shows, as well as returning fan-favorites like “Locke & Key” and “The Umbrella Academy.”
“In my ten years at Netflix, it’s been thrilling to see the dropped jaws, the all-caps tweets/the hilarious memes and the passionate theories inspired by these once-in-a-lifetime moments,” Friedlander wrote in a blog post. “Genre stories have the power to transport us to new universes like the Upside Down in ‘Stranger Things,’ teach us new vocabulary like ‘The Witcher’ and, most importantly, unite us in our shared love of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, anime and everything in between.

MIFA’s Work in Progress presentations offered online delegates a glimpse into some highly anticipated features, series and interactive projects in the second week of Annecy’s online festival.
Leading the pack was upcoming America-Canadian animated TV series from Netflix “The Cuphead Show!” – based on the characters in the best-selling Canadian “gun and run” video game “Cuphead.”
While the game has been highly praised for its authentic “rubber hose” style animation inspired by the Fleischer-produced toons of the 1930s, the TV series aims to go a step further – fleshing out some of the more minor characters and painstakingly reproducing watercolor sets for a digital production line.
According to executive producers Dave Wasson (“Micky Mouse Shorts”) and Cosmo Segurson (“Rocko’s Modern Life”), the pilot has been designed to introduce the show’s two main characters – a pair of energetic and bickering siblings called Cuphead and Mugman.
