A raft of Hollywood stars and industry professionals have vowed to re-locate outside of the U.S. in response to Donald Trump’s second presidency, but L.A-based Plan B co-founder Dede Gardner will not be among their ranks.
Talking in a masterclass at the Berlin Film Festival’s European Film Market on Saturday, the producer hinted that the idea had crossed her mind during Trump’s first month, which has seen extreme policy shifts around immigration, trade tariffs, Dei programs and foreign aid.
“The truth of it is that there are days, especially recently, where you think this isn’t sustainable. What’s going to happen? This seems completely nuts,” said Gardner.
“And then there are days where I think, particularly being in California, which is essentially the most progressive place in the world. Part of me thinks, ‘You know what. Stay here, be on the frontline, be around here,...

The Sundance Film Festival reliably delivers Oscar contenders every year, whether they be usually one or two standout narrative features or the lion’s share of Best Documentary Feature nominees.
2025 should be no exception.
But don’t look to all the Sundance 2025 award winners as likely Oscar contenders. Most films with Sundance jury awards, while worthy, are ultimately too small-scale to wind up in Oscar contention. Expect narrative winner “Atropia” and critical favorite “Rebuilding” to land at the Gothams or Indie Spirits. But the international award winners, for example, get a leg up on tipping their countries to submit them for International Feature Film consideration.
The lucky movies at Sundance that can fit into the right Oscar box find distributors, hire award campaigners, and wind up shortlisted or even nominated by the new year. Here is our list of potential Sundance entries, narrative and documentary, ranked by how likely they...

The Sundance Film Festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious independent film festivals, where filmmakers have been premiering their movies and documentaries since 1984.
The festival was founded in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, the head of Robert Redford’s company Wildwood, and John Earle of the Utah Film Commission under the name Utah/US Film Festival to attract more filmmakers to Utah.
Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 to foster independence, risk-taking, and new voices in American film. That year, 10 emerging filmmakers were invited to the Sundance Resort in the mountains of Utah, where they worked with leading writers, directors, and actors to develop their original independent projects.
By 1984, the festival had established itself and was officially renamed the Sundance Film Festival after Redford’s character in his 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. That year, the Grand Jury Prize in Dramatics was awarded to Old Enough, an...

Before this month, the last time I went to Sundance in person was January 2020. I clearly remember — and will never forget — standing in the lobby of the festival’s headquarters and reading news reports about the first case of a novel coronavirus being found in the United States; Donald Trump insisted that he had it “completely under control,” so I naturally spent the rest of the festival wondering if we’d all be dead before any of the films that premiered there saw the light of the day (“Save Yourselves!” indeed). Emilia Pérez star and Best Actress nominee Karla Sofia Gascón has apologized after several offensive social media posts she wrote resurfaced online on Thursday.
“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” Gascón said. “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
Gascón, who made history last week as the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress, came under fire for multiple social media posts that included inflammatory language about Muslims, George Floyd, diverse Oscar winners, and even the coronavirus.
In a since-deleted post from Nov. 22, 2020, Gascón wrote, “I’m sorry. Is it just my impression, or are there more Muslims in Spain? Every time I go...

Less than one day after becoming embroiled in a social media tempest over comments made about Fernanda Torres, Emilia Pérez star and Best Actress nominee Karla Sofia Gascón is now under fire for old social media posts about Islam and George Floyd, among other hot-button topics.
In one since-deleted post from Sept. 2, 2020, Gascón wrote, “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How Deeply Disgusting Of Humanity.” Alongside her comments, as translated by Variety, among other outlets, Gascón included a photo of a Muslim family.

Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang are caught up in a queer-marriage comedy of errors.
The Oscar-nominated actress and the “Wicked” and “SNL” star both lead the “Wedding Banquet” reimagining from Andrew Ahn. The “Fire Island” filmmaker reunites with Yang for his own twist on Ang Lee’s Golden Bear-winning 1993 film “The Wedding Banquet.”
Writer/director Ahn co-wrote the 2025 take on “The Wedding Banquet” with original co-screenwriter James Schamus, who co-wrote the 1993 film with Lee.
The official synopsis for the feature, which debuted at Sundance 2025, reads: “Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and her partner Lee (Gladstone) have been unlucky with their IVF treatments, but can’t afford to pay for another round. Meanwhile their friend Min (Han Gi-chan), the closeted scion of a multinational corporate empire, has plenty of family money but a soon-to-expire student visa. A lot has changed in queer culture and visibility since 1993, notably marriage equality and expanded LGBTQ parenting rights, even if the threat of legislative challenges from conservatives could mean more change, this time of a regressive nature. Repositioning a movie from more than three decades ago about queer sexuality, coupledom and family for today is no straightforward task. But director Andrew Ahn and his co-writer James Schamus, who filled that same role on Ang Lee’s beloved original, have cooked up a clever contemporary reimagining that honors the source while opening it up to all sorts of new realities.
What the second iteration of The Wedding Banquet does specifically for this precarious moment is not just add fresh fizz to the romance and comedy but also reaffirm the fundamental right to love who we love and celebrate the warm embrace of the chosen queer family. Funny and poignant in equal measure,...

It takes some guts to follow in the footsteps of writer James Schamus and director Ang Lee, but Andrew Ahn has achieved something pretty special here with his big-hearted reinterpretation of the pair’s 1993 arthouse hit The Wedding Banquet. Its unapologetic approach to all the which-ways of human attraction might be a bit full-on for mainstream audiences (it’s hard to imagine something so otherwise wholesome being any gayer), but don’t be surprised to see Ahn’s film pop up in the awards conversation this time next year, even if it doesn’t do Crazy Rich Asians figures at the box office.
The particular stroke of genius at play here is that Ahn has actually put some thought into the way the original story — in which a closeted gay Taiwanese-American man goes through with a fake straight marriage to please his conservative parents — could maintain its relevance so far...

In case anyone needed a reminder that “Film Twitter” and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are not populated by the same people, Emilia Pérez, the polarizing French-directed, Spanish-language musical about a trans Mexican gangster, landed a field-leading 13 Oscar nominations on Thursday morning. That tally — encompassing noms for best picture, director, actress, supporting actress, adapted screenplay, international feature, cinematography, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, sound and two for original song — smashed the record for a non-English-language film (previously held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which had 10 each) and is just one shy of the all-time record for any film (All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land each landed 14).
Is Jacques Audiard’s Netflix film unbeatable? Of course not. Plenty of people have issues with the film, including many members of the Mexican and trans communities, who find it offensive, and critics and general audiences,...

Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was a poster child for the power of inclusion when it broke box office records in 2023, but the $1.45 billion-grossing movie is only the 119th most inclusive film made in the past five years, according to the Inclusion List.
The annual list — presented by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation — is a data-driven ranking that identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023 and ranks a single year’s films across gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability and age representation.
“Our goal with the Inclusion List is to celebrate those who are showcasing and working with exceptional talent from all backgrounds,” stated Dr. Smith in a press release announcing the researchers’ findings. “In the second year of its release, the newest iteration of the Inclusion List spotlights films, filmmakers, and distributors who clearly demonstrate that inclusion...

Exclusive: On the heels of Twisters, which grossed over $370 million worldwide in theaters last summer, Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung has closed a deal with Skydance to direct The Traveler, a feature adaptation of the novel Traveler by Joseph Eckert.
While the project is in the early stages and the logline is being kept under wraps, sources described The Traveler as an intimate family drama that exponentially develops into a vast science fiction odyssey. The novel explores the life of Scott Treder, a 47-year-old biology technician who begins experiencing involuntary jumps through time, and there’s been interest in mounting a feature adaptation for some time. An early version of the script, penned by Austin Everett, garnered significant industry attention a few years ago, making the Blood List, Hit List, and the Black List, with MGM looking to develop it back in 2019, as we were first to report.

AMC's "The Walking Dead" seems like the kind of show that the characters on CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" would discuss and pick apart for its use of zombie tropes. However, the two shows have another, surprisingly direct connection in the shape of one particular actor who appears on both of them.
Said actor is Steven Yeun, who plays the plucky but ultimately unfortunate Glenn Rhee on "The Walking Dead." Jeffrey Dean Morgan's villain-turned-protagonist Negan famously murders Glenn and Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) in the show's season 7 premiere, "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be." As it happens, a similarly abrupt (though far less baseball bat-happy) exit befalls on Yeun's "The Big Bang Theory" character Sebastian, who appears briefly in season 3, episode 22, "The Staircase Implementation."

The prestigious production and distribution company A24 has a total of seven Best Picture nominations at the time of writing, ranked here from worst to best. A24 has solidified itself as the leader and standard of trending independent cinema and also one of the most reliable producers and distributors of original horror content. Netflix’s Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez has become one of a only a handful of predominantly non-English-language films ever to make the top 10 films list released by the American Film Institute annually since 2001 as part of the AFI Awards. It follows 2004’s Spanish-language Maria Full of Grace and 2007’s French-language The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
AFI’s eligibility rules declare, “Stories need not be presented in the English language if incontrovertibly American,” meaning that they include “significant creative and/or production elements from the United States,” which, in this case, presumably means American-born actresses Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez.
Partially non-English titles that have made the list in years past include 2006’s Letters from Iwo Jima, 2019’s The Farewell, 2020’s Minari and 2023’s Past Lives. Fully non-English titles have occasionally been given special awards, as was the case for 2011’s The Artist, 2018’s Roma and 2019’s Parasite.

Live-action adaptations are generally a cursed concept in the anime industry. The past speaks for itself in this regard with the failed Dragon Ball and Death Note movies that also tried their hand at Americanizing the respective series. Now Destin Daniel Cretton is set to direct the live-action Naruto movie and while we don’t have much information about it, the director’s promising filmography gives some hope.
However, despite his success with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Naruto is an entirely different ballpark for him to tackle. Some live-action adaptation directors whose works didn’t even make it to the production stage have talked about the challenges they face.

The director has expressed what an honor it was to meet and collaborate with Masashi Kishimoto himself and to be responsible for bringing Naruto to life in a live-action format.

“Fire Island” filmmaker Andrew Ahn is putting his own twist on “The Wedding Banquet” — and in his reimagining, Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang are watching their respective partners head down the aisle.
Ahn reinvents Ang Lee’s Golden Bear-winning 1993 film for a new era, 30 years later. Writer/director Ahn co-wrote the 2025 take on “The Wedding Banquet” with original co-screenwriter James Schamus, who co-wrote the 1993 film with Lee.
The official synopsis for the upcoming feature reads: “When Min’s (Han Gi-chan) boyfriend Chris (Yang) rejects his spontaneous marriage proposal, he convinces his best friend Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) to marry him instead, paying for her partner Liz’s (Gladstone) IVF treatments in exchange for his green card. Their plans for a subtle city hall elopement are turned upside down when Min’s grandmother makes a surprise trip from Seoul to throw them an extravagant Korean wedding banquet, which will fund the IVF treatments.

After waiting nearly 30 years for a sequel, Twisters characters offer a fresh group of movie stars to the world of storm chasing. The original Twister follows a pair of married storm chasers who put themselves at the mercy of dust storms and tornadoes to implement a new weather alert system. The film was a box office triumph, grossing around $500 million, with much of this success attributed to Twisters memorable cast of Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, and Cary Elwes. Twisters seeks to match that effect with a cast of modern stars like Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos.
Twisters has been in development for a long time, with numerous writers and directors considered before landing on Minari director Lee Isaac Chung and The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith. The Twisters cast boasts a breakout Top Gun: Maverick actor and the star of a hit miniseries among its ensemble, as well...

Twisters is now streaming on Peacock, and the movie's positive reviews and 75% Rotten Tomatoes score speak to the fact that it's one of 2024's most fun films. Building on the success of its 1996 predecessor, Twister, Twisters follows storm chasers as they attempt to track and research tornadoes. Lee Isaac Chung's movie depicts rival groups of storm chasers as they compete to find the biggest tornadoes. Twisters proved a huge success when it was in theaters, and now that it's finally streaming, new audiences will be able to discover the movie too.
Chung is best known for writing and directing the acclaimed 2020 drama Minari, as well as the films Munyurangabo and Abigail Harm. Along with Chung's talent behind the camera, Twisters casts popular actors Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell in leading roles, resulting in impressive performances and an entertaining rivals-to-friends arc. Taiwanese filmmakers Nelson Yeh and Herb Hsu and U.S.-based, Taiwan-born writer-director Weiko Lin discussed strategies for taking Taiwanese content global at a seminar during Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf) on Wednesday.
Lin is gearing up to direct Chalk, a thriller with U.S. and Taiwanese elements to be produced by Yeh’s Taipei-based Good Image and US producer Dave A. Liu’s Liucrative Media.
The film revolves around a single mother who witnesses a murder, then is assigned a policeman to protect her who turns out to be her estranged son. Lin, who is repped by Anonymous Content and UTA, has recently been scouting locations in Boston.
Lin originally wrote the script as a wholly English-language project, but then decided to bring in Taiwanese characters and changed the script to include dialogue in both English and Chinese. Citing hits such as Past Lives, Minari and Everything Everywhere All At Once,...

Reverse engineering a previously English-language script into a bilingual, dual-location thriller is one possible route to giving Taiwanese feature films a better shot in the international marketplace. So too, is adapting a previously successful romantic novel that could be partly filmed in the U.K.
Both approaches were spelled out on Wednesday at a panel discussion at the Taiwan Creative Content Fest titled ‘Where is the silver lining for Tw film?’ The session involved well-established director Nelson Yeh (“Night Market Hero”), U.S.-based director Weiko Lin and Taiwan female actor and screenwriter Herb Hsu (“Untold Herstory”).
Over the course of the session, the trio mentioned various challenges facing the Taiwanese industry. These included viewer distraction by micro-length videos, poor levels of audience support for local titles (especially art house films and those in minority languages), a lack of female film directors, as well as an over-familiarity with Hollywood content.

There’s a quiet strength to “Exhibiting Forgiveness” in what is left unsaid. It would have been easy to broadly categorize writer/director Titus Kaphar’s directorial debut with several other “festival darlings” in which a promising young storyteller tries to examine their own grief, guilt, or trauma through the means of a “slice of life” story. While many of these indie films are quite charming in their personability, they generally lack the formal excellence that is needed to be seen as truly major works. Kaphar quickly proves himself to be an outlier with “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” which is in no small part due to the fact that the film is about the importance of utilizing visual language.
At the center of “Exhibiting Forgiveness” is a career-best performance from Andre Holland as Tarrell, an acclaimed painter fresh off the success of a recent showcase. Tarrell is undeniably dedicated to his craft,...

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2024, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) won on her first nomination A year earlier Jamie Lee Curtis had reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively.

The 4:30 Movie writer-director Kevin Smith is well aware that filmmakers are in a self-reflective phase, especially after the wake-up call that was the recent global pandemic. In the past few years alone, Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) and James Gray (Armageddon Time) have made period dramas based on their childhoods, but most notably, Steven Spielberg put out The Fabelmans in 2022, detailing how his parents’ divorce intersected with his budding filmmaking prowess. Smith’s 16th feature about his four first loves — his neighborhood movie theater, his adolescent crush and his two best friends — is already being compared to Spielberg’s most recent Oscar-nominated film.

One of the better films in this year’s crop of summer blockbuster movies has proven to be the belated sequel Twisters. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung – who spoke to us about it here – and starring Daisy Edgar Jones, Anthony Ramos and Glen Powell, the movie was a big hit in the US, less so outside of America.
Still, little doubt that Twisters is going to offer a healthy outing for any half decent home cinema system, and the chance to put the wind up your equipment (so to speak) arrives in October.
Twisters is getting a full physical media release, with DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray options heading our way. All three of those are available from 14th October 2024 in the UK.

Powell's work on The Running Man comes with a recent expansion in his roster of collaborations with notable directors.

Sean Wang’s Sundance sensation Dìdi is a gorgeously told tale of growing up in the late noughties. Here’s our review.
Sean Wang’s Dìdi does something rather miraculous. It manages to capture a sense of a very specific time with its details while also telling a universal coming-of-age story from a unique point of view. If you grew up in the 2000s, listened to Paramore and spent your afternoons watching Youtube videos, this is a film for you.
Chris Wang (Izaac Wang) is a teenager growing up in California in 2008. He spends his free time skateboarding and causing mayhem with his friends while harbouring a crush on schoolmate Madi and worrying about how to kiss girls. Coming from a Taiwanese-American family, Chris is constantly pulled in different directions by the two cultures and identities.
In many ways, Dìdi feels almost like a prequel to Bo Burnham’s excellent Eight Grade.
