Adapted from the YA book series by Sara Shepard, Pretty Little Liars is one of the most gripping teen mysteries, and that is thanks to the large, talented cast. Chicago – In one of my trips to New York City, I saw him in the distance on the street (this actually happens often in NYC. Pay attention!). Actor Paul Sorvino, Paulie Cicero of ‘Goodfellas’ legend, as well as many other films/stage/TV/opera work, was unmistakably walking right towards me. “Hey Paulie,” I instinctively said. “Hey,” he said back. Fast forward several years later, Mr. Sorvino was honored by the Chicago Film Critics Awards in 2013, I was a newly minted Chicago Film Critic, and I met him again (see below). Paul Sorvino died on July 25th, 2022, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was 83.

Horror fans are well catered to in this month’s slimmed-down selection of film premieres on Sky Cinema, with serial killer body-swap comedy Freaky, The Forever Purge, and Ben Wheatley’s pandemic weird-fest In the Earth. Joining those is the latest from Steven Soderbergh, whose Contagion enjoyed a surge of interest early on in the pandemic. His new feature is Kimi, a thriller starring Zoe Kravitz set during the time of Covid-19.
For half-term viewing with the kids off school, there’s Space Jam: A New Legacy and Dream Horse, as well as the many archive titles already available. Speaking of which, save Book of Love, there doesn’t seem to be a big Valentine’s night-in premiere this year, so perhaps look out one of our picks.
And here’s what else is coming to Sky Cinema in the UK this February.

I don’t know what kind of a mood I was in when I sat down to watch The Birthday Cake but what I do know is that this movie did very little to clear up my state of mind. All I really knew was that this cast is a delectable smorgasbord of actors I love seeing up on the screen: William Fichtner, Vincent Pastore, Val Kilmer, Ewan McGregor, Lorraine Bracco and many many more, How could I go into this with low expectations? I actually had [semi] high-hopes to see what debutant writer/director Jimmy Giannopolous wass capable of – espeically with a cast that surely could shine up the dirtiest of turds with some stellar acting! Father Kelly (Ewan McGregor) advising Gio (Shiloh Fernandez) in The Birthday Cake, Jimmy Giannopoulos’ sharp debut feature.
In the first instalment of my conversation with Jimmy Giannopoulos on The Birthday Cake, Ed Bahlman (music producer and founder of 99 Records) joined us to discuss the score Jimmy co-wrote and performed with Tim Sandusky and how he worked on creating the original sound design for the film with Ryan M Price. We also touched on the screenplay, co-written with Diomedes Raul Bermudez and Shiloh Fernandez (who also stars as Gio), the possible subliminal influence of Shiloh being in Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood on the script, and Sean Price Williams’ entrancing cinematography.

The plot’s baffling, but not as baffling as why Kilmer, Ewan McGregor, and Paul Sorvino signed up for the director’s debut feature
Writer-director-composer Jimmy Giannopoulos doesn’t have a lot of previous credits to his name, and this gangster drama seems to be his first feature. But he or his producers are either extremely persuasive or very well connected because, given its meandering script and absurdly grand guignol ending, it’s astonishing that The Birthday Cake could attract such a starry cast. Admittedly lead actor Shiloh Fernandez, who plays son-of-a-dead-gangster Gio, isn’t yet a household name but within minutes his character is meeting Ewan McGregor playing a priest who inexplicably also narrates the story (his daughter Clara McGregor is a producer here and has a small role herself), while Lorraine Bracco features for an only slightly longer time as Gio’s widowed mother, and baker of the birthday cake of the title.

Screen Media has acquired “Best Sellers,” a comedy with Michael Caine and Aubrey Plaza about a pair of misfits that has a literary twist. The deal is for all U.S. rights, and the company plans to release the film theatrically and on-demand in September.
Directed by Lina Roessler (“Little Whispers: The Vow”), “Best Sellers” centers on an ambitious young editor (Plaza) who decides to try to save the flailing publishing house her father left her by going on a book tour with the bitter, hard-drinking author (Caine) who helped establish the company several decades and an ocean of booze ago.
Cary Elwes, Scott Speedman, Ellen Wong and Veronica Ferres co-star in the film. The screenplay, written by Anthony Grieco, won a 2015 Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting award.
“Not since ‘As Good as it Gets’ have we seen such a mismatched pair take to the road,” said Screen Media in a statement.

William Fichtner has been tapped for a key role opposite Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell in Joe Exotic (working title), Peacock’s limited series based on the Wondery podcast.
Fichtner will play Rick Kirkham, Joe’s (Mitchell) reality show producer in a recasting. He takes over for Dennis Quaid, who had to exit the project due to a scheduling conflict.
Joe Exotic (wt) centers on Carole Baskin (McKinnon), a big cat enthusiast, who learns that fellow exotic animal lover Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel (Mitchell) is breeding and using his big cats for profit. She sets out to shut down his venture, inciting a quickly escalating rivalry. But Carole has a checkered past of her own and when the claws come out, Joe will stop at nothing to expose what he sees as her hypocrisy. The results prove dangerous.

With his new film, The Birthday Cake, out next week, we take a look at the best roles of the Scottish actor – and no, Phantom Menace is not on it
Lip-syncing in Dennis Potter’s 1993 musical drama Lipstick on Your Collar was all very well. Crooning for real opposite Nicole Kidman, McGregor looks and sounds strained to say the least. But then his entire floundering performance represents a mere fender bump in Baz Luhrmann’s car crash of a musical. “His idea of conveying high emotion is to let his mouth hang wide open,” noted the critic Anthony Quinn.

Domestic theaters, now mostly reopen even with five new studio movies in the last three weeks, could only muster a total gross of $45 million this past weekend. That’s less than a quarter of what the same weekend in 2019 took in. That week was dominated by “Toy Story 4.” Disney released the Pixar sequel targeting the Father’s Day audience. That timing only added to an already monster hit that took in $121 million initially, and $434 million domestic all told.
This weekend, two new films were timed to Father’s Day, at least in part. Unfortunately for struggling theaters, neither had them in mind.
“Luca,” Pixar’s latest, debuted on Disney+ free for subscribers (unlike some other recent Premium VOD offerings). No viewership reports have emerged. But the figure might have been in the millions just in the U.S. And with the low end of a Pixar opening this century at $39 million,...

The Sparks Brothers, a documentary about a cult band by a brand-name director in Edgar Wright hits big screens this weekend, a felicitous one as New York and LA drop most capacity restrictions in theaters. The film about musician brothers Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks premiered at Sundance this year, notching a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes — all of which could hopefully give the arthouse market some long-term traction through the summer
Roadside Attractions debuts another pedigreed documentary, Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided To Go For It.
The Sparks Brothers, from MRC Non-Fiction, was produced by Wright, Nira Park, George Hencken, and Laura Richardson. It’s a musical odyssey through decades with the brothers and bandmates featuring passionate tributes from Beck, Flea, Jane Wiedlin, Jack Antonoff and Patton Oswalt. It opens on 543 screens in 200 markets.
“People asked to play it. They wanted to play it.

The Zac Efron survival thriller “Gold” has sold to Screen Media following a competitive bidding situation that saw several studios and distributors circling the project.

Screen Media has nabbed all North American rights to “Naked Singularity,” a heist thriller with John Boyega and Olivia Cooke. The film marks the feature directing debut of Chase Palmer, best known for co-writing the screenplay for “It,” the 2017 horror blockbuster.

"Don't say nothin'." Screen Media Films has released an official trailer for an indie mob thriller titled The Birthday Cake, from first-time filmmaker Jimmy Giannopoulos. On the 10th anniversary of his father's mysterious death, Giovanni reluctantly accepts the task of bringing a cake to the home of his uncle, a mob boss, for a celebration. Just two hours into the night, Gio's life is forever changed... As he pieces together what really happened to his father all those years ago, he comes face to face with a kind of violence he has been trying to avoid his whole life. Shiloh Fernandez stars as Gio, with a huge ensemble cast including Val Kilmer (back in movies again!), Lorraine Bracco, Ewan McGregor, William Fichtner, Ashley Benson, Aldis Hodge, Penn Badgley, Vincent Pastore, Luis Guzmán, Jeremy Allen White, and Emory Cohen. A unique setup with the cake, but the rest of this looks like a bland mob movie.

Screen Media has acquired North American rights to “The Birthday Cake,” a mob crime drama that boasts a murderer’s row of talent.
The film may be Jimmy Giannopoulos’ feature directorial debut, but the director attracted such stars and veterans as Shiloh Fernandez, Ewan McGregor, Val Kilmer, Lorraine Bracco, William Fichtner, Ashley Benson, Luis Guzman, Paul Sorvino, Vincent Pastore, Aldis Hodge, Penn Badgley, Emory Cohen, and Jeremy Allen White. That’s partly because the filmmaker spent years working in short films and music with artists including Miley Cyrus, A$AP Rocky and Kid Cudi. Screen Media will release the film in theaters and on demand in June 2021.
Here’s the official logline: “‘The Birthday Cake’ takes place on one fateful evening in the life of Gio (Fernandez), the son of a murdered mobster and the nephew of Brooklyn mob boss, Angelo (Kilmer). On the 10th anniversary of his father’s mysterious death,...
