Regardless of the color of the cast, all the back-stabbing made me feel like I was watching something from the late 70's or early 80's, like Dallas or Dynasty. I've always liked Joe Morton and thought Yaya Dacosta was good on Chicago Med. They deserve better.

By the way, writers, at least do your research. Somebody was asked a character she had lived in Boston and she answered, "The East Side." There's no such neighborhood. The closest name is the traditionally Italian "East Boston."
  • It's a decent show so far but the plot is going at lightening speed. It's almost like a soap-opera in the way the story jumps around but if you're in-between shows it's ok to watch.

The plot moves too fast, so many moving parts. Average acting. I almost gave up after watching first time! Watched it again due to boredom, and noticed how sensational Yaya's body is. Now I am invested because everytime Yaya is on screen I am watching to glimpse her amazing booty.... Yes, I am shallow!
  • I think the reviewers that are giving 7-10 stars are relatives of some of the actors. How did Morris and Joe sign on to this!?They have a good plot but the execution is horrible. The lead actress is lacking and over sells her role. Get new writers and new acting coaches! This shouldn't even make it past Season 1 at this rate!!
  • Despite historical facts that detail the lives of extremely wealthy Black people who lived in America, and regardless of those who live amongst us today, the images of black people living without borders and eloquently speaking without fear of being silenced by anyone of any social class, most free minds can't accept. Therefore, this series can expect backlash. It can expect haters from all races. It can expect people of every nationality dismissing characters left and right, judging the actors performances as unbelievable, and categorizing their dialogue as bad writing or rather "not black enough" to hold true. Thus, I wish this series good luck making it to another season, as I am beyond thankful to its creators and the network for showing American viewers, not just an entertaining program, but how each of us honestly categorizes Black people in this country.

It reminds me of Dynasty, Dallas, or Knots Landing but with better hair and clothes. I don't understand reviewers who are complaining about it moving to quickly, what the hell are they normally watching ??

I came here to add my review to try and bump up the number because there's only been two episodes so I don't get the negative reviews already.

It's entertaining and it's visually appealing and while I'm certain Angela is gonna end up being Teddy Franklin's daughter & Leah's half sister I'm gonna continue watching it anyway.

This show is a cross between Greenleaf, Revenge, and the Dynasty reboot; and all with a superb cast! From Yaya DeCosta (Chicago Med), Joe Morton (Scandal), Morris Chesnut (Rosewood, The Resident) and *countless* other familiar faces, this show makes you feel like all you already know the characters and it sucks you right in-after the pilot, which was sort of slow; get to episode two! I cannot wait to see how this show develops!!!

I really wanted to like this show but it's a no for me. They cram too much into each episode. And they're trying their hardest to get the LGBT vote. The all black cast is beautiful but what's the point if the storyline perpetuates the stereotype that black families can't stay together? Ugh. I'm really disappointed.
  • So far its better than anything on the STARZ or BET channels. Thank God they are actually showing black people for how we really look. We are not all light skinned with straight hair. Some of us are round or chubby. Im also grateful as heck the plot of this story does not revolve around "life in the ghetto" or something related to hip hop. Its not entirely unrealistic either bc there ARE wealthy black people (De Soto, Atlanta, areas in Maryland) and many of us are trying to or already establishing generational wealth for our families so this is, thank GOD, a fresh perspective. Ironically I had a conversation with an older man a few weeks ago about how its so imperative we leave a legacy to the next generation and Im glad this has been written for a story.

I love Yaya since way back as well as Morris and Papa Pope from Scandal lol. The acting is slightly above average and not amateur. If you could watch One Tree Hill u can watch this with no problem. One minor issue I have with stories about us is sometimes they do too much preaching about our culture rather than just showing. So theres these long matter of fact lines about what hair care means to black women or how we should think or behave as a people-as if we dont already know our culture or how to think for ourselves. Like what is that? But those moments arent as bad as how it is in the show Run the World-good grief.

Anyway, I dont think it'd hurt to give this a chance, especially if u are curious ab black culture or find black ppl attractive bc theres alot of eye candy and good fashion. If u are easily offended by big afro hair, an all black cast, or dialogue inspired by real history, and u really just cant see past all that, then yeah its expected for u to leave an ignorant low rating and think that anything like this is here to "cause division" smh.

The story line is clear , there is depth in the personalities and mixture of characters , the clash between the rich and the poor , can't wait to see the next episode .

    Meh
So much is left to be desired with this show. The storyline is okay. Everything escalates so fast, there is absolutely no build up or working out the characters or the plot. The acting is subpar. The potential is there. Maybe the next season will have better writers and polishing.
  • This show has so much potential to be amazing. Blindly hating a show or giving it low rankings or believing that it is anti-white just because it is black led is.... problematic. Also, having a black led show is not something that creates division. It achieves representation and hope. I, for one, am excited to see where it goes.
  • The show is good. The show has a great cast. It's nice to see a show that features black actors in a different light than what you may see on reality tv or some other shows. That said, I knew when this show premiered, it wasn't going to last. I think networks pick black shows they know won't make it so when it comes time to pilot other black shows, they have an excuse not to give them a chance. If this show was on Netflix, Epix, etc. It would have been better and most likely renewed for season two.

Storyline is tooooooo rushed and just not interesting.
  • Every since the day I found out about this show when I was in the restaurant I was obsessed with the way the trailers were showing the fox website and tv promos. The way how the show was lasting beginning to end was beautiful. I couldn't stop obsessing how well the casting was, for once black dark skinned beautiful actors and actresses on mainstream tv. Especially because the producer knew what they were doing with the show. It was like I couldn't leave my seat from the drama that was getting build up for the season.

I loved the main character and her daughter they kinda felt refreshing you know like they weren't shown to be poor, ratchet, or ghetto. They seemed really likable to the stories and I personally love the performances from everyone.

You should give this show a lot of support and a chance to watch it.
  • Girl got me at the keying the car. I knew right there, I'm in. Not sure what ride but I'm ready. Beautiful men, women, and scenery. I love anything that Alexa Rachelle Jennings graces the screen in, I really hope to see her more. Although it seems the role is a memory.

    I love the clothes too!
  • Just from the trailer, this reminded me of Revenge and the two main protagonists seem very similar. Definitely worth a look long term, I'm in.
  • Look, I've read the other reviews. Not sure what people expected this to be. I honestly watched WITHOUT expectations because I remember Yaya all the way back to America's Next Top Model. I find the show to be pretty entertaining. Is it sometimes predictable? Yes. However, contrary to others' opinions, I do think the acting is pretty good & have always loved Joe Morton and Debbie Morgan. Yaya is surprisingly good! If you're looking for something to watch that is going to be fun, interesting and a little "soapish", then give it a chance.

So much is crammed into each episode that it's hard to keep up (or even care to keep up). Typically, I appreciate a fast pace (especially in my soaps!) but this one moves so quick that the viewer is left scratching their heads and asking questions like "Who is that?" "Where did they pop up from, and why?" "What the WHAT... How'd you get from this to THAT?!" The actors are not the problem. Everyone I've seen thus far is more than capable. But they have been directed to act so over the top and melodramatic in even the most insignificant of scenes, that when they finally get to a juicy turn in the story, you almost expect them to put their bare hand to their forehead and proclaim, "God as my witness, I will NEVA go hungry AGAIN!"

I really liked the introduction of episode 2. If they'd just slow down so that I could get to know the characters a little, and actually care when something happens to them. Twists and turns should evoke gasps and shock from the audience, not eye rolls.

**I'd like to edit my review concerning some of the accusations I've seen here from other reviewers. Several of the higher scored reviews include comments regarding 'why' this show is receiving less than stellar marks on this site. If you'll research reviews from critics, and the Nielsen ratings that continue to slide each week, you'll see that it's often your imagination that leads to these feelings of victimization. The show just isn't that good. A dentist can polish and shine your teeth all day, but your breath can still stink. Think about it :)

Beautiful cast, intriguing storyline! This is definitely my new favorite show to watch!

SO many people hating on this show. Specifically Yaya's acting or the writer's writing... and yet not one of them have tried acting, directing, or writing a script.

    Hilarious.

I think watching 11 episodes is giving the series a chance. But when I find myself playing games on my phone or reading as an episode is playing, i am bored. Bad acting and slow boring story. I am a person of color and I like people of color. I'm just not into soap operas. Two stars for the beautiful scenery, beautiful cast and costumes.
  • I think this show is entertaining! The acting is excellent so is the storyline. It is like Dynasty and Dallas! It is fun to see a show portraying wealthy, high society African Americans with a lot of intrigue and complications from extreme wealth in very high end settings.
  • I hope this gets renewed for a 2nd season. I would love the opportunity to see the characters development. I love seeing black people in powerful positions, and not related to music, drugs, or sports. Nice change to see black excellence in drama.
  • I watched the first two episodes and disappointed. I thought the show would be in the likes of Greenleaf and Queen Sugar. I believe that Lee Daniels Karen Gist and the production team were not equipped to highlight this narrative of the Black Elite. The show had failed all aspects of a tv show. The storylines, acting , editing directing are horrible. I believe that Fox should kept this show in development and get another team to produce this show.
