007 eat yout heart out

Wonderful movie.

How about seeing Sir Roger Moore in one of his last roles and Outlander star Sam Heughan (perhaps the new Bond after Craig) in one movie.

I like all kinda movies, as long as they're well executed. And this one is just a fun movie to see.

Check it out when you get the chance.

A modern fairy tale
theatremarine1 July 2021
This is truly a modern fairy tale...and I watch it every Christmas season... The actors are believable and the scenery and locations are stunning.

The added bonus is Sam Heaughan as the Prince...I truly was agog....and it was rather cool to see a former James Bond...acting opposite a very strong front runner for the next James Bond...

A feel good movie
rds-0051610 November 2018
It was predictable but nevertheless a fairly good movie. The worse part of the movie was the actor playing Milo. He couldn't have been worse in his over acting and bad casting for the part. Much in the genre of 'A Crown for Christmas '.

Another commoner and royalty story
Jackbv12310 November 2017
Yes this story is absolutely ridiculous. In fact, I thought it went even beyond most of the other stories of this type. But that doesn't mean it isn't fun to watch.

Jules and her niece and nephew have had a heartbreaking struggle in the loss of her sister and their parents. But we get to see the wonder of children living the fairy tale at Christmas. Leilah de Meza is totally cute as the little girl who doesn't care that her grandpa is a duke. She even overlooks his grumpiness and just loves him.

There are some silly but fun scenes as the common folk meet the stiff royalty and sometimes try to loosen them up.

Modern fairy tale and good cast in this Christmas movie
SimonJack3 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is a modern live action fairy tale that works as a Christmas movie. Hollywood and television come out with new holiday films each season, so to be interesting a new film should have an original plot. "A Princess for Christmas" does have such a different plot. It's a story with two or three twists that work together nicely.

Katie McGrath plays Jules Daly, a young woman who has taken in her nephew and niece to raise after they lost their parents the previous Christmas. We don't learn how they died, so it's safe to assume it was a car accident. There's also no mention of maternal grandparents – the parents of Katie and her dead sister. So, we have to assume that they too are deceased. That can explain why Katie is the guardian of Milo and Maddie Huntington, played very well by Travis Turner and Leila de Meza.

As Christmas approaches, Jules has just been let go from work in an antique store. She has become something of an expert on antiques, but business has been so slow that the owner reluctantly has to lay her off. She has had a nanny watch the kids during the daytime – its now Christmas vacation. But Milo and Maddie get into mischief. This is a part of the story that doesn't sit quite right. The mischief of Maddie and Milo is everyday type of stuff that most families encounter, but the nanny, Mrs. Kelly can't cope, so she quits. Maria Junghetu plays Mrs. Kelly, but this character is a goof off in the first place. She's sitting down and working puzzles in the newspaper instead of paying attention to the kids.

So, Katie is at wit's end when she gets a knock on her door. She opens the door to Paisley Winterbottom, the butler to the Duke of Castlebury. Miles Richardson is very good and likable as the butler and Roger Moore plays Edward, the Duke. The duke is the grandfather of Milo and Maddie. He disowned his son, Charles, when he married Katie's sister (whose name I don't think we ever learn). It's been years, but now he would like them all to visit him for Christmas at Castlebury Hall. At first, Katie rejects the plane tickets and check for expenses, and the butler expressed the duke's regrets for his past behavior. But, with poor prospects for the rest of the holiday season, Katie finally accepts.

The next we see, they are being driven to Castlebury. We don't know what country this is in, and although everyone speaks English, it's not in England. When one of the three ask the butler where Castlebury is located, he replies "a stone's throw from Liechenstein." That small country (just over 60 square miles) is bordered by Austria on the east and by Switzerland on the north, west and south. So, the fictional Castlebury would likely be located in Switzerland. The filming was done in and around castles in Romania.

As they approach the scenic end of their car ride, Katie tells the kids that they can't break anything in this place. They meet the staff, the duke and his other son (their uncle), Ashton, Prince of Castlebury (played by Sam Heughan). The rest of the story is peppered with comedy as the duke adjusts to his grandkids and their aunt. And as a romance buds between Katie and Ashton, the fairy tale story unfolds with the kids from this point relegated to small appearances. One can guess the ending easily enough.

It's a nice and enjoyable film because the plot is different and refreshing. And, although the adjustment of the duke and his crowd to the ways of less formal lower class Americans, seems a bit contrived, the acting overall is quite good. McGrath is a fine actress and the kids are very good. Heughan is very good as the prince, and most of the staff are very good. Roger Moore seemed to be having fun, perhaps overdoing it some, maybe even adding a little ham. That's all the more reason I think most people will enjoy this film.

Very good family Christmas flick!
doctorsmoothlove24 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"A Princess for Christmas" is an aging Hallmark film you can occasionally find on free streaming services. If you ever find it, I suggest you give it a watch. It is one of the earliest examples of the "royal" subgenre of Christmas movies wherein a young woman falls in love with a prince during Christmas. Of these that I have seen, this is one of the better of this subgenre.

A single mother, Jules (played beautifully by Katie McGrath), from Buffalo lives with her niece and nephew. Her sister and the sister's husband died offscreen and the kids haven't taken to her yet, especially the teenage son. The boy appears to have a girlfriend who should have been a British girl in the fake England they all visit. Instead, we never see her after Milo steals a comic to impress her in the opening five minutes.

Jules receives a visitor who informs her his master is lonely and has invited them to visit. The family boards a plane to visit Castlebury where Milo and his little sister, Maddie's grandfather resides. The grandfather is played by Roger Moore who just nails the part of hornry old grandpa. This guy acts like he knows that you know he smells old and don't want to be there. Yet he invited his estranged family anyway. Apparently his deceased son was disowned when he married a common American woman.

The castle set and the surrounding town are impressive. It appears as if the film was shot in a real European castle. We see many rooms and get the impression the place is huge. The director does a good job setting the tone of this place too in the many dark scenes with low lighting. The darkness is too symbolic for any experienced viewer yet any symbolism is welcome to this genre.

McGrath and Sam Heughan as the prince are well acted and written here. Each of them is given enough backstory for the actors to portray them as complicated people with internal conflict. McGrath particularly is so warm and effusive I don't see how anyone couldn't fall in love with her. She has the quality Audrey Hepburn has in Roman Holiday, which is probably the best film to ever come out of this genre. Her performance is so effortless it almost comes off as cheesy.

What is actually cheesy is this film's movie jerk: the prince's snooty, quasi girlfriend character. Just as grandpa warms up, she shows up to be the villainess. The film doesn't need her although Charlotte Salt camps up her performance for added effect. It's an odd choice to have a character so blatantly movie-ish in this otherwise grounded film. It comes off as if the writer either realized the film had run out of story before its ending or an executive forced a third act.

The film suffers from pacing issues as many films do in this genre. However, I feel the experience as a whole is worthwhile and recommendable. The attention to personal detail here is great and gives the intended family audience something to discuss with children. I think parents will appreciate talking to children about death and coping which are the emotional core. Recommended.

Miscasting ruins the movie
smrdjenovich-640586 November 2015
The biggest problem I found was that a 24 year old man was cast to play a "teenager" and older brother to a seven year old whose parents were likely in their early 30's. If they took the time to cast a young child for the little girl, why couldn't they do the same for the son? The actor is so out of place, it ruins the movie. His face doesn't match with his words and actions. Katie McGrath is only four years older that the actor. It seems so fake when she is talking to him as an adult to a child.

Also, some of the mannerisms of the character of Jules Daly do not match. She does not seem to be the kind of person who would put her elbows on the table at a formal dinner in a castle, or grab sandwiches from a tray and run out of a room. These things are an annoyance because it looks like she does them because it calls for her to do it as an actress, not because the character would do these things.

Overall, I found it very hard to stay focused on the movie.

Nice little fantasy

Only thing that spoils it is the man playing Milo...he is far too old for the part. There are numerous young actors that could have played this part better.

A Modern Day Fairy Tale
nroadsbrooks020 November 2011
A romantic, modern day fairy tale that is perfect for all the family, but especially for young girls and their Mothers, Grandmothers and their Granddaughters, Aunts & nieces, etc.

Boys, be warned, this may all be a tad emotionally mushy for your taste, but who knows, you may learn some wonderful manners during the process of watching it. Every little girl (and we are all little girls at heart), dreams of being treated like a princess, whether they like to admit it or not.

The beautiful Katie McGrath plays the lead female role and I felt at times, she gave a rather wooden performance that actually enhanced her displays of awkwardness in an unfamiliar situation and so rather than distance the viewer, it actually made her character more endearing to them.

It was wonderful to see Sir Roger Moore acting again, in his typical, suave male role.

A wonderful Christmas Fairy Story.

It's ok

Warning: Spoilers
While it's enjoyable to watch, it's also kind of all over the place? I don't know, it felt a little messy and fast, and there wasn't really a plot. The characters had potential, but I didn't really like them. Personally I'm not a fan of romances where they fall in love only a few days after meeting. And then when they are together for a few minutes, they do a time skip to them getting married, which felt really rushed to me.

WAY better than most cable Christmas movies
KehDBug21 July 2020
There are slight offerings from cable channels (Ion, Freeform, BET) and then there are deluges (Hallmark, Lifetime) when it comes to Christmas movies. And I've seen EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM (it takes me until March to view them on the DVR). Although I don't have the time to comment on all of them, I certainly have enough experience under my belt to review this pleasant, unassuming entry from 2011. It stars Katie McGrath (Supergirl) and a slight Sam Heughan (before he became rugged and buff for Outlander).

To acknowledge the elephants in the room: -Yes, the American accents of the non-Americans playing Americans do noticeably slip. -Yes, it's a fairy tale and redundant; nothing new here. -Yes, Katie McGrath smiles way too much. -Yes, the brashness of Americans is overplayed to create an unsubtle chasm on cultural differences for the sake of the plot.

However, I found the movie to be quite charming, with flawless chemistry between the two leads. At least 90% of the Christmas movies I view are awful and forgettable (sorry, Hallmark). But this offering takes a tired formula and refreshes it with real life situations (an aunt raising an orphan niece and nephew) and kids who actually ACT LIKE KIDS, not sickly sweet and/or perfect angels (thank you, Michael Damian). In short, acknowledge the flaws, but enjoy the performances and the stunning, breathtaking scenery.

A Sweet Story
Christmas-Reviewer31 March 2017
BEWARE OF FALSE REVIEWS & REVIEWERS. SOME REVIEWERS HAVE ONLY ONE REVIEW TO THEIR NAME. NOW WHEN ITS A POSITIVE REVIEW THAT TELLS ME THEY WERE INVOLVED WITH THE MOVIE. IF ITS A NEGATIVE REVIEW THEN THEY MIGHT HAVE A GRUDGE AGAINST THE FILM . NOW I HAVE REVIEWED OVER 200 HOLIDAY FILMS. I HAVE NO AGENDA. I AM HONEST

Jules Daly (Katie McGrath) becomes the legal guardian of her 7-year- old niece Maddie (Leilah de Meza) and teenage nephew Milo (Travis Turner). After Jules gets laid off at work, the butler of Duke Edward, the children's wealthy grandfather, appears with an invitation for Milo and Maddie to spend the Christmas holidays with his employer. Jules initially refuses, but decides to go for the children's sake.

The story "borrows" from many other movies where an "American Finds themselves related to royalty". The story also has a dash of "Little Lord Fauntleroy". The cast is very good but the plot line is nothing new or a creative take of an often told tale. The film is well made. It holds your attention but, you will forget the whole film after a good nights sleep!

Warning: Spoilers
Travis turner - "milo" looked a lot older - obnoxious and did not Like his character he was 24 when he played the role. Milo attitude appeared to be of an older character. Everyone else seem to get it. Enjoy madly and Jules. But milo character was not that of a 12 or 14. Great movie otherwise.

one of Christmas film. seductive for its childish story, using of expectations of public , beautiful Peleș Castle and Roger Moore. and, sure, few Romanian actors. so, not great expectations or critics. because it is only a fairy tale, the classic fairy tale of Cinderella, using Christmas as pretext for remind the joy of love, family spirit, the prince and the poor girl, the dreams of childhood who becomes reality. all in a seductive story who is real charming. so, it could become a classic of the season. because it has grace and beauty and nice performances and the right cast. and this is the most important fact. to discover the spirit of Christmas as pure form of joy and flavor of fairy tale.

Why do I do this to myself and why do I like it?
Robert_duder18 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Every Christmas I submerge myself into as many Christmas movies as I can pack in. Last year I stumbled onto the horrors of ABC Family's Christmas movies and I was hooked. Every cheesy moment, every old teen star, the insanely cute and sweet movies that won me over. On Netflix I stumbled across this little gem (which I don't believe is ABC Family) but it might as well be. It looked like the perfect cheesy sweet Christmas movie so off I went. I kept thinking how truly awful the acting was (and I still stand by that), the movie is sugary sweet, barely slapped together, and yet somehow still manages to make you smile at least twice and end up not being all that bad. It isn't good...don't get me wrong. I wouldn't even say it was remotely as good as half the stuff on ABC Family for Christmas but I'll be darned if it hit the spot for cutesy Christmas fluff. I was actually surprised at how many IMDb reviewers really enjoyed it and also knew of the story beforehand. Apparently there is potentially even a sequel in the works? I imagine the demographic for the film is young girls and it is appropriate enough for them or for the whole family. Its cute and fun and as long as you go in with the proper expectations you can't help but enjoy it in all its campy glory.

The film will unfortunately do nothing for this cast's career. There isn't one performance I can say was truly good. Watching Katie McGrath act in this is almost excruciating. If the film wasn't so sugary sweet she would be atrocious but instead somehow you warm up to her and she is so naive looking that her bad acting works for this for some reason. I do enjoy that they went out of their way to find a famous face and icon to play the grandfather and that is Roger Moore. Moore does a solid job, probably ironically the least campy of the cast. His character could be interesting in a sort of Captain VonTrapp sort of way. He is emotionally distraught over the loss of his son, he is an aristocrat who looks down on people, and he survived a near death experience himself so he has a lot of growing and learning to do and its cute and they sort of rush the whole process but he does very well. Sam Heughan is our Prince and the object of McGrath's affections. He is decent but way underplayed considering he is the romantic lead. He stands there, smiles, has a few decent lines but nothing that stands out. The chemistry between them is decent (thank goodness) but he should have had more character given to him. The two children are played by Travis Turner and Leilah de Meza. Turner seems so awkward in the role. I'm certainly not meaning to be cruel to this young actor but he looks funny, talks funny and over plays certain scenes. He did an okay job but he didn't seem to fit the part somehow. de Meza though was excellent for a young actress with a fairly small part. She will literally melt your heart with her few lines and she is appropriately adorable...if that's a talent than she has it nailed. Charlotte Salt is completely underused and misused as a potential villain. I felt like she had ten minutes of screen time and a Disney film would have made her the "mean girl" and made it memorable!!

The movie is cute. It also wasn't made for my demographic so I'm being harsher on it than I should. Kids and family will likely enjoy it. It had some good physical comedy (which I am a huge fan of), a sweet romance and it did try its best to centre itself around Christmas though I felt like that was forced in a lot of ways. Director Michael Damian comes from Television and from a Soap in particular so it kind of shows in the melodramatic style of this little Christmas special. It certainly isn't anything that would become a permanent staple in my Holiday viewing but it was cute. 6/10

Katie McGrath
ktbartels-8944610 September 2020
The movie did not flow well, especially in the beginning. Many of the characters were irritating caricatures and I felt that the romance was not developed very well. The only upside to this film is Katie McGrath. She is an amazingly talented actress and brought this poorly written character to life. Her dynamic performance is the only reason I finished the movie at all.

what do you expect
johnzonh26 January 2012
OK there are too many out here that have too much time on their hands to bash a movie that clearly was meant to be a sappy Christmas movie. It was a feel good movie with a nice ending. So who cares if some things didn't make sense or the acting was sub par.

I found the characters funny and for the entertainment value..it was a nice story. No, I am not going to bother putting it in the same category as other movies that warrant high critical acclaim. However, movies like these, while not out to foster high debate over whether an accent is spot on or whether or not we even need to know why Maddie wasn't titled appropriately, are often a jumping point for actors and should be looked at for what they are. Sure there are Christmas movies that offer more and demand critical discussion. For a movie like that I might turn to something that incites thought and debate..and would probably have tenured actors.

Barely tolerable
asmithee239 January 2021
Now in my Grandma years, my tastes are changing. Where I once boo hooed TV Christmas movies, I now find them as necessary as air. This is one to skip. The lead actress loses her American accent a few times, the castle household goes from Grinch mountain to Whoville in just a matter of hours of the clumsy but beautiful woman's arrival and most of the acting is atrocious. The writing ain't that grand, either. I mean, I am not expecting Shakespeare, you know but a character named Paisley Winterbottom? A Christmas Eve ball put together with just five days to go? Such short notice explains the terrible formal wear of the guests. The lead characters dress looked like a high school home ec project. At least put some of the wardrobe budget on such an important piece. On the plus side, Sam Heughan, Roger Moore and that beautiful castle. An aside, that castle is also used for the Christmas Prince movies. It's spectacular.

Loosely Stitched.. Like a Basted Hem
kamille21 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There were some lovely elements holding this Christmas tale together (Sam Heughan, castle, snow, scenery) like a basted hem.. barely. If only the makers of the movie had put as much attention into casting a couple with charisma, or into details such as wardrobe, as they did in the sets and scenery, then this could have been a jewel of a movie.

The clothes they dressed Jules in were just hideous. They were outdated and frumpy, such as you would find at a Salvation Army thrift store. "But at least they will dress her in an elegant gown for the Ball, and fix her hair!", I assumed.

Well, I assumed wrong. Clearly, they sent some children into an arts & crafts class, gave them some Elmer's glue, cheap sequins, and scraps of costume rejects and said "Have at it, kids!" I don't think I have ever seen an uglier, tackier dress in all my life! Ditto for her hair. It was too black (a lighter shade or some highlights would have softened her look), and in a woefully outdated style. And as if making her look like an octogenarian wasn't bad enough, they chose an actress who had a limited range of emotions and zero chemistry with the prince, who evidently fell in love with her literally overnight and married her a nano-second after that. (Compare Ashton's chemistry with Jules to Jamie's chemistry with Claire; we're talking about night and day here).

Another casting fail, in my opinion, was Milo. He was just not right for this role. Worse, the actor was nearly twice the age of the character he played.

Sam Heughan was perfect, as always.. however, his role was so limited that the idea of him being in love with Jules was simply preposterous. It's like as if a year had been removed from the plot.. the year where the romance was cultivated and bloomed. We didn't get to see that. We saw them do a waltz, kiss, and marry.

Criticism aside, I still enjoyed this for the Christmas cookie that it was. I don't expect Gone With The Wind in these cut and paste holiday treats. I watch it for the scenes of snow on evergreens, and quaint towns decked out for the holidays, with Christmas tree lots and jingle bell sound effects. In that respect, I was not disappointed.

Just not so good christmas flick
MaryBoAmptmeijer11 November 2020
All in all, it could have been worse. Probably a fun movie for little kids and teenage girls but there I hold the line. Normally it's fun to watch the 'not masterpiece chick flick and Christmas" movies, but now I had a lot of trouble to enjoy a simple movie. As a serious movie critique all I could see was this: Bad to moderate acting, terrible sound effect, special effects, bad makeup, childish and not at all fashionable costumes, filming was unfittung, dissapointing script. Probably a lot of people will enjoy this movie, but it is far from award winning! So for all you movie fanatics, if you like cheesy movies this is the one! If you enjoy more of a thoughtfull movie this ain't it!

A Christmas Fairy Tale - no less..
lucyinthestars22 December 2011
When you imagined the castle of cinderlla - it may have looked like this one. When you imagined how nice Prince Charming may be - it might have been just like this one.

Its a fairy tale - are fairy tales ever meant to be realistic? Of course not!

My family did not like the movie because they believed it to be poor acting but good looking performers and a unimaginative plot.

I loved it because it was heart warming. It is not a thought provoking movie. Its lovely. That's all it is.

Merry Christmas!

A Pleasant Surprise
kcterrell-2504625 January 2022
OK, it's smaltzy, contrived, and sentimental. In short, it has all the markings of a formulaic Hallmark movie.

But the terrific acting by McGrath and Moore plus the two child actors, de Meza and Turner along with the entire staff of Castlebury Castle make this film more than bearable. And, I cried off and on through the entire film. I am no crier, but something about the story and presentation really affected me, including the take down of the royal class, coupled with the melting of an old man's heart, and the children's coming to terms with the loss of their parents. And then, there is the nice chemistry between McGrath and Heughan that helps make their romance believable. It's a Christmas movie to be sure, but I could watch this film in June and enjoy it just as much.

Very disappointed!
raquel_bonelli31 March 2019
I decided to watch this film because I really like both leading actors, but they had no chemistry together whatsoever. It was really cringe to watch their scenes together. I've seen her in Merlim and I'm big fan of him in Outlander so I know that both of them are good actors, but in this movie I had to skip their scenes, because the lines were really cringe. She was very clumsy since she arrived at the castle, but a person who works in an antique shop surely would be less clumsy. Also, she wore the most awful clothes ever! This is a 2011 movie, fashion did not change that much. I think that whole point was to make her look better during the ball. Overall, very disappointed because I love Christmas movie, but it was really hard to finish to watch this film.

A Hallmark Christmas Classic!
LuLuBelleJ11 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
A Princess for Christmas has been an annual favorite of mine since it was released! General plot has been summarized to pieces in other reviews, so I will just comment on my likes and dislikes.

The cast was excellent, and yes, it was a bit hard to get past some of Katie McGraths accent slip ups. I love when Hallmark uses a cast that isn't in every other movie they make. I prefer good acting from otherwise "unknowns" than seeing the same actors they use in many of their other movies over and over.

Sam Heughan......can we just say, "I'll have a Scotch on the rocks?" The kids are cuties and butlers and wait staff are awesome! I thought Sir Roger Moore was just fine. If you consider the role, I think he nailed it. It was especially cute when Maddie hands him his favorite ornament, and the way he looks at her.... Just precious!

So here are my Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Loved the casting

  • Great on screen chemistry between Katie McGrath and SamHeughan (wished there was a sequel!)

  • surprisingly GOOD story line

  • loved the locations they used!!!

  • loved that it wasn't "the usual" Hallmark casts

  • Loved that it ended with a wedding

Cons:

  • Minor accent slips from K. McGrath (not a deal breaker, she's still a great actress!) - The Ball Scene has something like a string Quartet, playing the music of a full orchestra, but it's OK... I know it's just a Hallmark movie...

  • The cheap looking, and just plain "odd" looking bridal shop reject dresses Katie and the women wore in the ball scene. Katie's dress was just a hot mess....and not hemmed... Most of the dresses I recognized from regular dept stores, and even some bridesmaids dresses! I was hoping for "Royal" costuming! ...I'm big on costuming. I don't think the Dutchess of Cambridge would buy a Macy's dress.... Just sayin...

  • Again, that pathetic looking wedding dress Katie wore, and like her ball dress, it wasn't hemmed either. I kept worrying that she was going to trip on the dress!

I wish Hallmark would bring the cast back together for a Royal Sequel!
