In the 1890s, William Murdoch uses radical forensic techniques for the time, including fingerprinting and trace evidence, to solve some of the city's most gruesome murders.
In episode 2 of season 2, Inspector Brackenreid says he is from Doncaster, England. In real life, Thomas Craig who plays the inspector was born in Sheffield; the two places are only 25 miles apart.
Although the credit on each episode reads "Inspector William Murdoch", he is actually a detective. In Episode 1.2 Murdoch applies for the position of Inspector, but is turned down. It is made clear that he will never get that promotion because he is a Roman Catholic.
