In the 1890s, William Murdoch uses radical forensic techniques for the time, including fingerprinting and trace evidence, to solve some of the city's most gruesome murders.
Peter Outerbridge, who plays Father Keegan, originated the on-screen role of William Murdoch in the three made-for-television movies collectively known as The Murdoch Mysteries (2004).
Although the credit on each episode reads "Inspector William Murdoch", he is actually a detective. In Episode 1.2 Murdoch applies for the position of Inspector, but is turned down. It is made clear that he will never get that promotion because he is a Roman Catholic.
