It’s a little ironic that the fair-minded maiden in “Love in the Villa” yearns for an authentic, romantic Italian vacation since her fairy tale has been cobbled together by Netflix’s practically patented algorithm. Take one part down-on-her-luck female protagonist, add in a handsome-but-cantankerous gentleman either from or in an enchanting European setting, and mix with a generous splash of high jinks that force them to fall head over heels. Yet the blessed surprise awaiting even the most cynical of audiences of writer-director Mark Steven Johnson’s romantic comedy is that within the manufactured product lies a heartening appeal to its sensible delight.

With his new film “Demonic,” writer-director Neill Blomkamp has done something he’s never done before: He’s made a feature film that’s almost completely pointless.
The man behind “District 9,” “Elysium,” and “Chappie” has never been particularly subtle about his allegories, whether the films are acclaimed or not. So far he’s used sci-fi trappings to explore the evils of apartheid and health care, and to address at least some of the bigger questions about artificial intelligence. They’re usually big swings, the sci-fi films of Neill Blomkamp, so it’s hard to begrudge him for going for a bunt this time.
But “Demonic” isn’t just a low-budget supernatural–sci-fi thriller; it’s also a shallow one, a boring one, a poorly conceived one — and the characters stink too. It’s a horror movie with no ideas and only half a scare. It’s a sci-fi movie...

The newest trend in home viewing: the hot title that seems to come out of nowhere. This week it’s “The 2nd,” which jumped to #1 on the AppleTV and GooglePlay movie rental charts. An actioner starring Ryan Phillippe and Casper Van Dien would never register within film Twitter, but that’s not the ruling sensibility of VOD.
This week had a range of alternative offerings, led by the Disney+ debut of “Mulan.” At an estimated $200 million cost, it is by far the most expensive feature film to skip domestic theaters for Premium VOD. This is also the second week of “Bill & Ted Face the Music” (United Artists), as well as first for “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” the start of Netflix’s fall awards-intended original releases. All that comes as “Tenet” (Warner Bros.) began its muted run in the U.S. as it tries to bring struggling theaters into recovery.

There’s little false advertising to “Love, Guaranteed,” a romantic comedy about true love and the seemingly overblown promises of online dating. The shared fate of Susan Whitaker and Nick Evans — played by Rachel Leigh Cook and Damon Wayans Jr. — is all but assured by director Mark Steven Johnson’s pretty much by-the-numbers take. The question isn’t “Will they wind up together?” It’s more of a “how they will wind up together” proposition. Even with some nicely understated moments from the leads, the Netflix film is decidedly slight, easy-on-the-noggin entertainment.
Susan Whitaker has her own shingle as an attorney. Nick is a physical therapist at a rehab center. How others feel about each of them — her employees, his patients — attests to the fact they are decent people. When Nick first seeks out Susan’s services for a lawsuit, she has her doubts. Still, her penchant for turning paying...

You can always count on Netflix to keep churning out quality content every month, and it’s really come in handy during 2020 while so many people are stuck inside needing new stuff to watch. September has been off to a great start so far, too, already adding movies like Denzel Washington’s Glory, classic musical Grease, the Hannibal Lecter tale Red Dragon and the drug-fuelled Seth Rogen and James Franco flick Pineapple Express.
Of course, that’s not all that subscribers will get in September, as there are quite a few other major drops hitting throughout the month. Perhaps the most notable is September 23rd’s Enola Holmes, which stars Millie Bobby Brown as the sister of the famous Sherlock Holmes – played here by Henry Cavill. If that’s not your thing, though, you may be more excited about September 4th’s psychological horror I’m Thinking of Ending Things,...

“She’s All That” changed Rachael Leigh Cook’s life. The 1999 teen romantic comedy — a modern-day retelling of “Pygmalion” — starred Cook as Laney Boggs, a homely, artsy outcast who transforms, in late ’90s parlance, into a “total hottie” and captures the heart of the high school heartthrob, played by Freddie Prinze Jr.
When the movie opened in theaters, it grossed $103 million worldwide, birthed a chart-topping soundtrack (thanks to Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me”) and made both of its leads into sought-after commodities in Hollywood.
It’s an experience Cook, now 40, looks back on with nostalgic fondness.
“I’m just grateful every day that I didn’t come of age in the era of camera phones, and yet, that makes me sound way more scandalous than I actually was,” says Cook, who started acting professionally at age 14.
But Cook still grapples with how to describe the formative years of her career.

"What price would you pay to find love?" Netflix has released an official trailer for a cute romantic comedy titled Love, Guaranteed, starring Rachael Leigh Cook & Damon Wayans Jr. It's a bit strange, but this is made by the director of Daredevil and Ghost Rider, now doing a light-hearted romcom? Sure, okay. To save her small law firm, earnest lawyer Susan takes a high-paying case from Nick, a charming client who wants to sue a dating website that guarantees love. But as the case heats up, so do Susan and Nick's feelings for each other. I'm glad to see the romantic comedy spin in this - condemning dating websites and accusing them of being for-profit crap by narcissists. And I like the romance - based on honesty and genuine charm. The cast includes Heather Graham, Quynh Mi, Jed Rees, Lisa Durupt, and Brendan Taylor. At first glance, this looks pretty good!

September marks the start of the traditional TV season. For many networks and cable channels, however, this will be an usual season with the coronavirus pandemic halting production leaving behind paltry fall lineups. Over on Netflix, however, things continue to operate at high capacity.
Netflix is rolling out quite a few original series and movies for its new releases in September 2020. The Hillary Swank-starring space drama Away premieres on September 4. That is followed by a whole host of intriguing concepts including Julie and the Phantoms (Sept. 10), Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Sept. 18), and even the Nurse Ratched origin story series called Ratched (Sept. 18).
The film side of things is just as packed. Romantic comedy Love, Guaranteed premieres on Sept. 3, Charlie Kaufman’s latest effort I’m Thinking of Ending Things arrives on Sept. 4, and the Tom Holland-starring thriller The Devil All the Time bows on Sept. 16. That’s not even to mention Enola Holmes on Sept.
