Ah, January. A new year, a clean slate, a fresh chance to… do what you’ve always done, maybe? Not that we at IndieWire don’t encourage personal growth, but we do support you if you decide to spend a lot of this month recovering from the holidays and melting into your couch in front of a watchlist.

Alicia Silverstone and Netflix just made next Christmas a lot better
Image
Netflix is getting really good at making Hallmark-type films. But the streamer does it a bit differently. We know the Hallmark Channel drill: Boy moves to town, girl is trying to get out of a bad relationship, they meet and girl doesn't like boy, and then they end up falling in love and being happy forever. Netflix Originals normally add a lot more intrigue.

We also get actors we know well in most Netflix movies. This will be the case next year (we hope) when Alicia Silverstone is set to join Oliver Hudson, Jameela Jamil, Pierson Fode, and Melissa Joan Hart in a film called A Merry Little Ex-Mas. The script was written by Holly Hester who also penned The Royal Treatment.

The plot involves a recently separated couple trying to have one more Christmas as a family with their children before the mother starts her life over. The issue...

Three Terrible Comedies That Roger Ebert Loved
Image
Roger Ebert was never afraid to go against the grain. While most critics loved films like A Clockwork Orange, Gladiator, The Usual Suspects and The Elephant Man, Ebert gave them a big thumbs down. It went the other way as well, though. Far Out Magazine recently noted a number of terrible movies that Ebert inexplicably loved, including three comedies that would be more at home at the Razzies than the Oscars.

Here are three terrible comedies that got kudos from arguably the greatest film critic of all time…

1 Home Alone 3

No Macaulay Culkin? No Chris Columbus? No problem for Ebert. “To my astonishment, I liked the third Home Alone movie better than the first two,” he wrote. “I’m even going so far as to recommend it.”

What was so great about it? “This movie follows the exact formula of the first two, but is funnier and gentler, has a real charmer for a hero,...

Why Paul Blart 3 Never Happened
Image
A sequel to Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 still hasn't come out, and it's increasingly looking like a prospective Paul Blart: Mall Cop 3 will never end up being produced. Happy Madison Productions earned some surprisingly strong box-office results with the pair of Paul Blart: Mall Cop films. Since 1999, the production company has released several low-concept movies that performed well at the box office. They've also proven to have a strong shelf-life on streaming thanks to Adam Sandler's lucrative deal with Netflix, with the pair of Paul Blart films among the most financially lucrative.

The Paul Blart movies star Kevin James (King of Queens) as the titular security officer. Both films involve the bumbling mall cop getting unwittingly involved in heist plots, with the protagonist floundering around while pursuing the bad guys. Fans of those films have been holding out hope for years that Blart would return (even if some...

Ice Cube says ‘Friday’ franchise has advocates with new Warner Bros. regime
Image
Actor, producer, platinum-selling recording artist and Grammy Lifetime Achievement award-winner Ice Cube has been pushing to get a fourth chapter in his beloved comedy franchise “Friday” off the ground for years. In a recent conversation with hip-hop legend and timepiece advocate Flavor Flav on the “Flavor of the Week” SiriusXM show, he shared hopes that audiences may get a chance to revisit the storyline.

“We finally got some traction with Warner Bros,” Cube said. “They have new leadership, my man Mike DeLuca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first ‘Friday’ and ‘Players Club’ and ‘All About the Benjamins’. Mike DeLuca was there. So, now he’s running Warner Bros. And him and my man [agent] Michael Gruber was like, ‘Yo, what the f–k is going on with ‘Friday’? Man, let’s get this sh– back online.”

‘The Outlaws’ Proves There’s More to Jessica Gunning Than ‘Baby Reindeer’
Image
Despite a cast that includes “The Office” co-creator Stephan Merchant, potential new Bond Claes Bang, and national treasure Christopher Walken, crime comedy “The Outlaws” has largely flown under the radar since debuting on Amazon in 2022. But now “Baby Reindeer” has alerted the rest of the world to the talents of Jessica Gunning, its third season, premiering May 31, should both attract a deservedly bigger audience and continue its regular scene-stealer’s meteoric rise.

The continuation of the saga involving seven petty criminals who become embroiled in a dangerous drug money-laundering scheme while undergoing community service was filmed prior to Martha Scott, and the memeable real-life Scotswoman she was apparently based upon, dominating the cultural discourse. Yet in a timely development, Gunning’s supervisor Diane Pemberley is given much more prominence, and indeed more layers, this time around.

She’s still as ridiculously bureaucratic as ever, with the addition of Stan (Harry Trevaldwyn...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: March 2024
Image
It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.

The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop Was Kevin James' Underdog Ride To Box Office Glory
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

Kevin James is not exactly a name that comes to mind when one thinks of the phrase "movie star." People of a certain age probably picture the lovable everyman Doug Heffernan from his long-running sitcom "The King of Queens," but a great many others will probably think of two words: Paul Blart. Be it solely for the memes or because you're one of the many moviegoers who genuinely enjoys the film, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" was a bonafide hit that started a franchise and, though it may not be how we generally think of him, asserted James as a butts-in-seats movie star.

The 2009 comedy centers on Paul Blart (James) who dreams of becoming a State Trooper. In the meantime, he patrols the...

The League Cast & Character Guide
Image
The League is a raunchy sitcom about a fantasy football league that features a talented cast and several dynamic characters. The show follows six friends whose obsession with their fantasy football league leads them to make each other’s lives miserable. Accessible for outsiders to the game, The League finds success in blending the comedy of everyday life matters, such as romance and work, with the hyper-competitiveness, as Pete, Ruxin, Jenny, Andre, Kevin and Taco strive to claim the coveted Shiva trophy.

A semi-improvised show, The League is among FX’s most highly rated series, owing much of its success to the energetic chemistry and inventive minds of its central cast. While the show ended in 2018, star Mark Duplass has expressed his openness to returning to The League, and many of the show’s stars have continued to work together in subsequent projects. Deadline Launches ‘Strike Talk’ Podcast Hosted By Billy Ray And Todd Garner: Week One
Image
Since Deadline formed more than 15 years ago, we’ve never lost sight of the human struggles felt by writers and everyone else during labor standoffs. Today, we proudly launch Strike Talk with Billy Ray and Todd Garner, a weekly podcast dedicated to dissecting the issues that caused talks to break off between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, this week prompting the writers to trade their pencils for picket signs.

A reckoning is upon us as writers try to keep their place at a moment when studios and streamers struggle to impose economic efficiencies to show fiscal responsibility to their shareholders, and writers struggle with things like streaming deals that have no chance for backend compensation in success, and series that have far fewer than the 22 episodes that had been the norm on the traditional networks.

In Strike Talk’s Week One episode,...

The King Of Queens Cast: Where They Are Now
Image
Some actors and comedians from the King of Queens cast are still huge stars to this day, while others have played notable supporting roles on other TV shows. Styled as a modern-day take on the classic Jackie Gleason sitcom The Honeymooners, The King of Queens told the story of a childfree middle-class couple living in New York. The show ran for nine seasons on CBS from 1998 to 2007, airing a total of 207 episodes. Over the course of its run, The King of Queens was a ratings success and earned positive reviews from critics. Much of the critical acclaim focused on the hilarious work of the series’ all-star cast.

From standup comics like Kevin James and Patton Oswalt to legendary sitcom staples like Jerry Stiller, the King of Queens cast is full of gifted comedic performers bringing the show’s zany characters to life. Most of the award nominations received by The King of Queens...

SXSW 2023 Review: The Wrath Of Becky, Hell Hath No Fury Like This Teenage Girl's Scorn
Image
Becky is back, and this time it’s… pretty much the same as last time. Three years ago, the world witnessed one of the craziest heel turns in recent history, funny guy Kevin James turned up in Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s uber violent Home Alone riff, Becky as vicious neo-Nazi, Dominick. As insane as that sounded to a lot of film fans at the time, it actually worked. James played his villain dead straight, and he was legitimately terrifying. Becky pitted James against the fourteen-year-old titular character, played to smarmy perfection by Lulu Wilson, as he and his gang of murderous white supremacists sought a very particular artifact that just happened to be located in the cabin...

That is followed up by the docuseries Children of the Underground on Aug. 13, Little Demon on Aug. 26, and The Patient of Aug. 30. The most interesting of the bunch,...

Kevin James to Play New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton in Netflix Film ‘Home Team’
Adam Sandler
Kevin James will portray New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton in a film for Netflix called “Home Team,” according to NBC Sports’ Peter King, who announced the news in his “Football Morning in America” column Monday.

“Home Team” follows Payton in 2012 when the coach was suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goddell in the entire 2012 season related to the team’s role in the “Bountygate” scandal, in which the team was accused of paying out bounties or bonuses to players who successfully injured opposing team players.

The film shows how Payton began to reassess his life and took a job as the offensive coach for his son Connor’s sixth-grade football team in the Dallas area.

“Home Team” would be produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions as part of the company’s deal with Netflix. Filming is expected to begin this year, and Sean Payton himself has already...

Warner Bros. Shifts ‘Mortal Kombat,’ ‘Tom and Jerry’ Release Dates
Image
Warner Bros. has shuffled around release dates for three of the studio’s upcoming movies: “Mortal Kombat, “Tom and Jerry” and Hugh Jackman’s sci-fi drama “Reminiscence.”

“Mortal Kombat,” a live-action adaptation of the popular video game, was originally set for Jan. 15, 2021, and will now open on April 16, 2021. “Reminiscence,” which was initially slated for mid-April, was removed from the studio’s calendar. The animated “Tom and Jerry” remake was moved up a week and will debut on Feb. 26, 2021, instead of March 5.

All three films, along with the rest of Warner Bros. 2021 slate, will premiere on HBO Max on the same day as their theatrical premieres. In total, 18 of the studio’s films — including “Wonder Woman 1984,” “The Matrix 4,” “Dune” and “In the Heights” — will launch day-and-date over the next 12 months. When Warner Bros. announced the plans earlier in December, a promotional trailer offered a disclaimer that individual release dates are “subject to change,...

Higher Price Doesn’t Hinder ‘The Informer’ with Joel Kinnaman on VOD
Image
Every year, movie-preview pieces herald the holidays’ arrival; in 2020, the headlines are a little different. As USA Today proclaimed, “10 Must-See Movies to Stream Over the Holiday Season.” They include “Soul,” “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Let Them All Talk,” and “Small Axe” — major awards contenders, many of which would have have been theatrical releases. However, they all belong to streamers, not VOD.

Meanwhile, on Friday Vertical Entertainment dropped an action film, “The Informer,” which stars Joel Kinnaman as an ex-con who returns to prison undercover to expose a Polish drug cartel. Shot in 2017 and released in most of the world in 2019, this title from the director of “Escobar: Paradise Lost” is unlikely to show up on anyone’s awards-season list. However, even at $19.99 to rent, it topped two major VOD charts this weekend.

“The Informer” has a strong ensemble cast that includes Rosamund Pike, Common, Clive Owen, and Ana de Armas...

A Beloved Kevin James Movie Is Dominating Netflix Today
Image
Wherever Adam Sandler goes, Kevin James can usually be found following close behind, with the duo becoming virtually inseparable since the latter made his feature film debut in the pivotal role of Factory Worker in 2004’s 50 First Dates. Since then, the pair have co-starred in a further ten movies from I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry to Hubie Halloween, while James has headlined Happy Madison vehicles Zookeper and Here Comes the Boom.

After playing a series of supporting parts, it was inevitably Sandler and Happy Madison that elevated the former King of Queens star to leading man status for the first time when he portrayed the title character in 2009’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Despite receiving reviews that could be described as tepid at best, the comedy was a massive hit at the box office and earned over $180 million on a budget of just $26 million, proving that there...

15 Best Thanksgiving Movies of All Time
Image
During these unprecedented times the thing we all want the most is certainty. That is what movies give us. The fact that so many movies exist around the holidays nearly cements the fact that we crave certain norms. With the current state of the world changing the way we look at just about everything, it's not surprising that it's effecting how we think, how we plan, and how we deal with both cinema and the Thanksgiving holiday.

Everything has rules now in a way that they never did before... Especially gatherings like Thanksgiving. How many people can we have over? How long can they be there? These questions all play into the holiday because who didn't enjoy watching a little football and some movies with family and friends. All of that is going to be a little different this year but one thing that will still be the same... the movies.
