Derek Cianfrance, director and co-writer of “The Place Beyond the Pines,” told IndieWire at the New Directors/New Films festival that Bradley Cooper almost bowed out of the production after receiving a rewritten script.
Just before principle photography began, Cianfrance brought in screenwriter Darius Marder to rewrite “every word” of “The Place Beyond the Pines.” Cooper was not pleased with the changes to his character, a police officer who kills off a compassionate thief (Ryan Gosling) at the film’s halfway mark.
“I had given [Marder] the script and he had a lot of notes for it, and I kind of agreed with a lot of what he was saying. And so we rewrote every word from 10 weeks to six weeks,” Cianfrance explained. “I remember giving Bradley Cooper the copy of ‘The Place Beyond the Pines,’ the new script, and getting a voice message from him saying, ‘Bro, I just want...

The intensely poetic dark passion behind “Blue Valentine” seeped into even its road to the big screen, according to writer/director Derek Cianfrance.
During IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” live at the New Directors/New Films festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art, Cianfrance told podcast co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson that he believed the project itself was “cursed” for more than a decade due to its stalled production process. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams eventually were cast as an ill-fated married couple struggling to maintain their love across years together.
Cianfrance began writing the script for the Oscar-nominated feature while at Sundance 1998 after the premiere of his debut film “Brother Tied.” It took him 12 years and 66 script drafts until “Blue Valentine” was finally released in 2010.
“For ‘Blue Valentine,’ I spent so many years [on it]. People said, ‘Just make the movie,'” Cianfrance said. “For me on that movie,...

Blumhouse Productions and The Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell are bringing us another reboot of a classic Universal Pictures property with Wolf Man, which had the perfect release date: October 25th, delivering werewolf action to the big screen just in time for Halloween. But Wolf Man only just started filming earlier this month, and the filmmakers clearly feel that they need more than seven months to get it ready for theatres. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Wolf Man‘s release has been delayed, pushed back to January 17, 2025. The studio already had another Blumhouse project scheduled for a January 10th release, the Jaume Collet-Serra / Danielle Deadwyler thriller The Woman in the Yard… but with Wolf Man moving to January, The Woman in the Yard has been bumped off the schedule entirely. We’ll have to wait and see when Universal will decide to release that one.

Blumhouse Productions and The Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell are bringing us another reboot of a classic Universal Pictures property with Wolf Man, which is set to reach theatres on October 25th – and yesterday, producer Jason Blum took to social media to confirm that Wolf Man is now filming! Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes appeared together in Derek Cianfrance’s epic crime drama movie The Place Beyond the Pines with the story from Cianfrance and Ben Coccio. Bradley Cooper also starred alongside the two in the movie that narrates three linear stories.
The filmmaker was reportedly inspired to write about the movie based on his experience as a father and had envisioned the main themes to be about father-son, masculine identity, and legacy. Upon its release, with moderate success at the box office, the movie received a positive response from the audience and the critics.
Gosling and Mendes are one of the most admired couples who are very private about their lives but a re-surfaced revelation from Derek Cianfrance goes on to show that they were always meant to meet and be.

Ryan Gosling began acting as a kid and has never looked back. Having made his acting debut on the show- The Mickey Mouse Club alongside future stars like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Christina Aguilera, he has shined through as a performer in the years he has spent working as an actor.
Whether it be his dancing skills for La La Land or taking on the risky role of Ken in Barbie, Gosling has never been one to back away from challenges. He unknowingly gave one such challenge to himself when he was filming The Place Beyond the Pines. Ironically, this was the film in which he played the role of the love interest of Eva Mendes, whom he married in reality later.

Ryan Gosling has that Ken-ergy. He’s Ken out of Ken. He’s Kendlessly Kentertaining. He’s the Kend all, be all. He’s the Kenvy of other actors. He’s impossible to not Kenjoy. He’s more, much more, than Kenough.
Gosling has had a long, fruitful career, but it’s safe to say that he’s never committed to a role as hard as he’s committed to the bit that was the “Barbie” press tour. Every interview and soundbite the Canadian actor has given in the publicity run for Greta Gerwig’s take on the iconic Mattel toy line has launched meme after meme, as he’s spoken about the importance of telling the tragic story of Barbie’s beau Ken. It’s a commitment that’s only seconded by his performance in the film itself, where he goes for broke with a hilarious, oblivious, and often...

His portrayal of the beach-protecting, Barbie-loving Ken and his power anthem "I'm Just Ken" has now become a pop culture phenomenon, but Ryan Gosling initially turned down the role. For director Greta Gerwig, however, there was no alternative. She even wrote it into the script, where the main Ken is identified throughout as "Ken Ryan Gosling." Gerwig told SiriusXM that she and Margot Robbie sent Gosling numerous texts and promised daily presents on set to try and convince him.
"He absolutely passed," Robbie told Variety, but she and Gerwig persevered. "Every time he's like, 'I'm not doing this,' we were like, 'We are doing it, and it's going to be fun.'" As Gosling himself explained, one of main barriers was the classic Hollywood problem of scheduling conflicts: "There were actual reasons why I couldn't do the film. Schedule things. Life things."

Ryan Gosling is delivering a darker take on Ken.
The “Barbie” star, who is Oscar-nominated for his turn as Stereotypical Barbie’s (Margot Robbie) would-be love interest, explained in a Variety cover story that he took Ken’s affection for Barbie to be more obsessive than endearing.
“I thought, ‘Ken is “Single White Female”-ing Barbie,'” Gosling recalled, citing the Jennifer Jason Leigh-led psychological thriller that saw a mirroring pattern of obsession between two roommates. “So he would try to dye his hair, even though he can’t dye his hair. I thought, ‘I should bleach my hair, but it should be an off version of hers.'”
Gosling added that, at first, for his Ken look, he had an “almost Redford wig, they called it,” that made him look like a luxury beach hotel employee. “I looked at the screen test, and I thought it wasn’t Ken,...

For an actor it’s a strange experience to come upon a character you’re about to play in the flesh — or in the plastic. After Ryan Gosling first read the script for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” he walked into his backyard and found the real thing — one of his daughters’ Ken dolls — lying in the dirt, naked, with his face in a pile of mud.
“I’m sure you heard this story,” Gosling says with a grin. It’s true — it’s a story he loves to tell. But now there’s a new ending. Long after “Barbie” opened in theaters last July, after it became the biggest movie of 2023 and inspired grown men to don neon pink in public, Gosling spotted Ken in his family home once more. This time, he was better dressed, which is to say that he was dressed. “He was wearing a tuxedo, albeit a sleeveless one,...

Barbenheimer kicked off when both Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” were released in theatres on the same day last year on July 21. However, the fun-spirited, lighthearted rivalry between the Warner Bros. comedy and the Universal biopic has continued into this awards season. Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have often been the most nominated films at various awards groups and two performers have found themselves head to head in pretty much every precursor so far: supporting players Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Gosling.
Downey Jr. plays scheming politician Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer” and produces a thoughtful, fierce performance as the film’s primary antagonist. Gosling, meanwhile, has the time of his life in the year’s most colorful performance — playing Ken, the doll obsessed with Barbie, in “Barbie.” You couldn’t get two more contrasting performances — both are genius in their own measure. Julia Garner, who may be best known for playing the role of Ruth Langmore on the Netflix series Ozark, made her feature acting debut in the 2011 film Martha Marcy May Marlene, which also happened to star Christopher Abbott. We recently heard that Abbott had signed on to star in the Wolf Man reboot that’s coming our way from Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and The Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell – and now Deadline reports that the film is going to be a Martha Marcy May Marlene reunion, as Garner has also been cast in Wolf Man!

Garner must be playing his wife, because her character is described as being a mother whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator. Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer“) has the lead in our Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor. He leads our Golden Globe odds too. But is there room for an upset? There just might be. If you dig into our data you’ll find more than a glimmer of hope for Ryan Gosling in “Barbie.” Broad comedic performances don’t often rule during awards season, but if Gosling wins the Globe, that could snowball his momentum into an eventual Oscar victory in March.
Downey leads our Globe forecasts for Best Film Supporting Actor with 37/10 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, but Gosling is close behind with 4/1 odds. Gosling is predicted to win by one of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets, two of the Editors who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby, and two of the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest prediction scores...

Last week, it was announced that the Wolf Man reboot Blumhouse has been developing for Universal since 2020 is now on the fast track to production, aiming for an October 25, 2024 theatrical release. The Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell will be at the helm of this new take on the 1941 classic The Wolf Man, with Christopher Abbott (Possessor) on board to star. One character that hasn’t been cast just yet is a 10-year-old female named Ginger, and Blumhouse has sent out a casting call in search of the right young actor to fill the role.
Ginger is described as being “Female, 10 years old, white. Blake and Charlotte’s daughter. Smart, precocious, and strong. When her family decides to leave the city for a quieter life in a remote area, she faces her biggest fear, the possibility of losing one or both of her parents forever.” Blumhouse is hoping to find someone...

Back in 2020, it was announced that Ryan Gosling would be starring in a reboot of the 1941 classic The Wolf Man for Universal Pictures. Blumhouse Productions came on to produce the project soon after, with their The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell signing on to take the helm. When Whannell left the project the following year, Gosling’s Blue Valentine and Place Beyond the Pines director Derek Cianfrance came on board. Then Gosling and Cianfrance both stepped away from Wolf Man earlier this year. But that wasn’t the death knell for the project. In fact, we have just learned that it’s moving full steam ahead, with Whannell back at the helm and Christopher Abbott (Possessor) set to star in the film, which is aiming for an October 25, 2024 theatrical release!
Abbott is taking on the role of a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Christopher Abbott is the new “Wolf Man,” taking over the starring role in the upcoming monster movie from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures from Ryan Gosling.
Details on the project are being kept under wraps, but Abbott plays a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.
“Wolf Man” will be directed by Leigh Whannell — who was behind the 2020 hit “The Invisible Man,” which relaunched the Universal monsterverse and grossed $144 million at the global box office — and is dated for release on Oct. 25. The film is written by Whannell and Corbett Tuck and Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (“Dumb Money”).
The project was originally announced in 2020 with Gosling set to star; in 2021, Derek Cianfrance signed on to direct, reuniting after their acclaimed collaborations on 2010’s “Blue Valentine” and 2012’s “The Place Beyond the Pines.” The pair departed the picture together, though Gosling will remain involved with the project as an executive producer.

Christopher Abbott Replacing Ryan Gosling to Star in ‘Wolf Man’ for Blumhouse, Universal (Exclusive)
Wolf Man has taken a new form.
Christopher Abbott, currently on screens with award season darling Poor Things, will star in Blumhouse and Universal Pictures’ werewolf thriller that is being directed by Invisible Man filmmaker Leigh Whannell.
Additionally, the companies have set an Oct. 25, 2024 release date for the feature, meaning the project is now moving faster than a speeding silver bullet.
That’s a hair-raising development for the thriller, which for the past three-plus years had Ryan Gosling on board to star. And it marks a return to the Wolf Man director’s chair for Whannell, who was initially on board the creature feature but moved aside in 2021, with Gosling’s Place Beyond the Pines and Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance parachuting in.
Gosling and Cianfrance have both departed the project although Gosling will now receive an executive producer credit.

According to a report, Universal’s Ryan Gosling-starring take on The Wolfman has regained its original director, Leigh Whannell.
In the bizarro world of Hollywoodland, the dust may be settling from an earth-quaking six months of strikes but we’re still feeling regular aftershocks.
The other day we learned that Quentin Tarantino’s next film was facing a significant delay, but today’s story has taken an especially leftfield turn.
According to World of Reel, a listing on Production Weekly has revealed that Leigh Whannell is back in the director’s chair for The Wolfman, Universal’s modern spin on the classic werewolf character that has been in some kind of development for at least three years.
It’s been quite a while since we heard anything regarding this project so here’s a quick refresher: back in February of 2020, Leigh Whannell’s modern take on The Invisible Man was released to positive reviews.

Before starring as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Jacob Elordi was only familiar with the King of Rock and Roll from Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch.”
During a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon,” Elordi sat down to discuss his role in the film, which centers on the life of Priscilla Presley (Cailee Spaeny) and her relationship with Elvis.

When Williams collaborated with Gosling for the feature, the pair went the extra mile to inhabit their Blue Valentine characters. They played a couple whose marriage wasn’t in a very healthy place in the romantic drama. The film would show their characters in different stages of their lives. They were shown as a young, passionate couple, and much more weathered lovers on the brink of a divorce.
To better capture their roles, Gosling and Williams really lived with each other for a month.
“During the month, we tried to dismantle this thing that we had been building,” Gosling once said according to NPR.

Full disclosure. Many years ago, I worked at the Disney Channel at the time producers were casting a revival of the kids show “The Mickey Mouse Club.” I don’t know who did the selection of the cast members, but among the then-unknown pre-teens they chose were Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell and a gawky 13 year-old Canadian kid named Ryan Gosling. What a cast! All have gone on to great success as adults, but Gosling especially chose his own path to become one of the most respected film actors working today.
In the course of such films as “Half Nelson,” “Blue Valentine, ” and “The Big Short,” Gosling has been nominated for two Academy Awards and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. He has also been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, which includes a win for his performance in the Damien Chazelle musical “La La Land.”

While Oscar voters love nominating performers for portraying real-life people in biopics, it turns out that to win Best Actress it is better to play a fictional character. Over the past decade 29 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning. Here’s the complete breakdown.
As you can see four out of five contenders last year were actresses playing fictional people. The one exception was Ana de Armas, who was nominated for portraying Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde.” The last time all five nominations went to actresses playing fictional people was back in 2011 when Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”), Annette Bening (“The Kids Are All Right”), Nicole Kidman (“Rabbit Hole”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Winter’s Bone”), and Williams (“Blue Valentine”) were all nominated, with Portman winning.

Everyone loves a good cinematic love story. But for those of us who aren’t living our happily ever afters with the loves of our lives, it can be hard to watch a swoon-worthy romance on Netflix without feeling a bit wistful and sad. That’s particularly true if you’re dealing with a case of the break-up blues.
Thankfully, no one is truly alone alone in front of a TV screen. As long as there have been romance films, there have been break-up films; movies that capture the pain and anguish of a relationship dying, leaving those involved picking up the pieces.
One of the most acclaimed American classics of all time, Michael Curtiz’s “Casablanca,” is at its core a story about having to say goodbye to the person you love. The destruction of relationships or marriages has proven fertile ground for modern directors as well, from Noah Baumbach...

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" centers around the iconic doll (Margot Robbie) trying to find her human owner in the real world in hopes that it will stop her from further malfunctioning. While Ken (Ryan Gosling) plays a big part in the film, his goal is much simpler: to get noticed by Barbie. After failing to do so several times, Ken sings his frustrations out in a ballad called "I'm Just Ken" during the film's climax. The song is all about feeling like he'll never be good enough for Barbie with lyrics like, "Doesn't seem to matter what I do. I'm always number two."
Since some actors don't actually provide their own vocals in movies, you may have left the theater wondering whether Gosling actually sings in "Barbie." Let's dive into it.

Ira Sachs’ sexy Sundance drama “Passages” has received an Nc-17 rating by the MPA but will be released unrated by Mubi, the distributor confirms to Variety. Mubi called the rating “unexpected” and said it was “deeply disappointed by the MPA’s decision.”
“Mubi has officially rejected this Nc-17 rating,” the distributor added. “Mubi remains committed to releasing ‘Passages’ nationwide in its original version as the filmmaker intended, with our full backing, unrated and uncut.”
“Passages” centers on a love triangle in Paris between a movie director (Franz Rogowski), his artist husband (Ben Whishaw) and a grade-school teacher he meets out one night. The film includes several sex scenes in which the actors are fully nude, but none of them are salacious or gratuitous. One scene centers on the husbands having sex and is shot in an unbroken long take that runs just over two minutes.

Over the past 20 years, Ryan Gosling has given audiences several notable performances in both indie and blockbuster films, garnered numerous awards and accolades, and earned a spot as one of Hollywood's most respected actors. He notably started his career in front of the camera as a teen in the early 1990s on "The Mickey Mouse Club" and continued to land minor roles on television throughout the remainder of the decade. By the 2000s, Gosling began acting in movies, with his role as Noah Calhoun in the 2004 film "The Notebook" launching him into superstardom. Since then, he's had leading roles in Oscar-winning films like "La La Land" and "Blade Runner 2049," but he recently received plenty of buzz for his latest work in Greta Gerwig's "Barbie."
"Barbie," which stars Margot Robbie as the iconic fashion doll brought to life, features Gosling as Ken, Barbie's counterpart and companion throughout the film.

Ryan Gosling is a Hollywood icon. He has classic charm, unique eccentricity, and acting versatility that rivals Brad Pitt and Jake Gyllenhaal. Comparisons have been made to Robert Redford and Paul Newman too.
Gosling was in “The Mickey Mouse Club” and “Young Hercules” before his break-out role in “The Notebook,” which propelled him into stardom. His good looks are unforgettable, but he is unafraid to embrace his quirks onscreen or off-screen.

Ryan Gosling may be a Ken doll, but he was never viewed as cookie-cutter.
The “Barbie” actor revealed during a GQ cover story that his iconic breakout role in 2004 romance “The Notebook” came out of subverted casting. Director Nick Cassavetes told Gosling that playing Noah, opposite Rachel McAdams’ Ali, in the decades-spanning epic would make for an unexpected choice.
“[Nick] straight up told me: ‘The fact that you have no natural leading man qualities is why I want you to be my leading man,'” Gosling said.
He went on to compare his early career to a therapy of sorts, saying, “I was trying to find a place to put all these things that were happening to me. And these films became ways to do that, like time capsules. So you kinda make the movie for yourselves. Doesn’t matter if anyone else does, you know? But I think, having done a lot of that,...

The start of any month brings with it batches of movies added to streaming services’ libraries. As of this week, Netflix has “Girl, Interrupted,” “Steel Magnolias” and “Traffic,” HBO Max has “Blue Valentine,” “Hustle & Flow” and “Parasite,” and Hulu has “Atonement” and “Boogie Nights.” A handful of newer titles are also premiering digitally. First up is a spellbinding thriller featuring some of Hollywood’s hottest young actors.
The contender to watch this week: “How to Blow Up a Pipeline”
Neon picked up this eco-thriller out of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, after which it won raves for its gripping portrait of young DIY environmental activists who band together to destroy oil pipes in West Texas. Based on Andreas Malm‘s nonfiction book of the same name, “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” stars Ariela Barer (“Runaways”), Sasha Lane (“American Honey”), Lukas Gage (“The White Lotus”), Marcus Scribner...

May 1 marks the series debut of “White House Plumbers,” the new limited series from “Veep” showrunner David Mandel that chronicles the Watergate break-in and fallout. That show airs on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. Then on May 4, the comedy “The Other Two” returns for its third season on HBO Max.
The sixth season of the animated series “Rick and Morty” will be available to stream on HBO Max starting on May 11, and in terms of library titles the “Men in Black” trilogy, the comedies “Step Brothers” and “Some Like It Hot” and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut “Mid90s” all come to HBO and HBO Max this month.

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!
